Joe's journey into the trail world began with a single volunteer day, leading to a career spent shaping the way people move through landscapes—often without them realizing it. He explains how great trail work is meant to be invisible, drawing a fascinating comparison between Disneyland's intentional illusions and the subtle deceptions that allow national park visitors to experience nature without seeing the engineering beneath their feet.We explore the art and science of trail building, from positive and negative control points to the stark differences between East Coast and West Coast trails. Joe shares insights from his early forays into writing about trails, his experience as project lead for The Parks Project coffee table book, and the whirlwind road trips he took to interview as many people as possible for his upcoming book. We also discuss the global rise of long-distance trails, including the Transcaucasian Trail in Armenia and Georgia, and the evolving role of trails as both recreational pathways and vital lifelines in the wilderness. We also talk about the threat trails and those that maintain them are under with regards to the recent layoffs in the park and forest service. Episode Release Notes: Braving Business in Israel In the Aftermath of October 7, 2023. Welcome to a different kind of episode of "Braving Business." The episode where "braving" takes on an outsized meaning, extending beyond the business realm to life, perseverance, and resilience. On October 7, 2023, an unimaginable tragedy unfolded in Israel. A terrorist act orchestrated by Hamas claimed the lives of 1,400 Israelis. This incident, which snatched away hundreds of young souls attending a peace-promoting musical concert, has had profound impacts not only emotionally and socially but also on the nation's economic fabric. With daily rocket attacks continuing, compelling citizens to their safety shelters, and hundreds of thousands of individuals called for reserve duties, the Israeli economy is facing an unprecedented halt. Predictions point to a depression-scale dip in Israel's GDP. But beyond the numbers, it's the enormous human and psychological toll that is most heart-wrenching.Today's Guests: As we delve into understanding the ramifications of this tragedy, we have with us Eytan Avriel, co-founder of Israel's renowned business newspaper, "The Marker," and a respected figure in Israeli journalism. Eitan's journey from the Israeli Navy to becoming a leading voice in Israel's business ecosystem provides a unique perspective on the current situation. Accompanying Eitan is Daniel Dayan, the founder of Step-In, a LinkedIn Consulting firm. Apart from being a lecturer, workshop facilitator, and daily content creator, Daniel -- who is an Orthodox Jew -- also heads the high-tech practice in the EXIT career center located in Bnei Brak, near Tel Aviv. ---Discussion Highlights: Eitan and Daniel's firsthand experience and initial reactions to the October 7th tragedy.- An inside view into the changed atmosphere and mood of the Israeli society and business world post the attack.- Forecasts on the economic repercussions - short-term and long-term.- The commendable unity displayed by ordinary people, businesses and organizations in supporting the victims, along with the fear of speaking out among venture backed Israeli high tech firms.- Addressing the mental health repercussions on the workforce and society.- Insights on government interventions, both current and proposed, to rejuvenate the economy, and on the lack of confidence in government among Israelis in the aftermath of the attack.- The interplay of money, power, and ethics in such times, with a special note for international entrepreneurs wanting to support Israel.- Daniel's gritty vision for the future, drawing from Israel' and the Jewish People's historic resilience.- A concluding message to the global community on the indomitable spirit of Israel and its citizens.---We urge our listeners to join us in this soul-stirring discussion. Let's come together in understanding, support, and hope.Thank you for being with us in this journey of "Braving Business" where, today, braving life itself is the underlying theme.

When the government exempted media from the lockdown, logically, this was to ensure that the media could do its job—which was to bring information and news to the people who were sequestered in their homes. My guest today did just that. She is Barkha Dutt, one of India's best known journalists. Barkha decided that she was going to bring information to the people. True to her wont, she did not do this by halves. She stepped out and travelled across the country with a small team of colleagues.Over about three months, she with her team logged over 30,000 kms—that's a shade under 19000 miles—travelling over surface in every available transport just to meet people.Of course a tragedy like this brings out the best and the worst in people and Barkha was witness to all of it. Appropriately, her book is titled Humans Of Covid.Everywhere she went, she logged the stories of the worst off among us. These stories are deeply human and capture the essence of how we cope when nature turns against us.The medical fraternity cared for the living. Barkha met people who cared for the dead. People who put their own religions behind them and even temporarily adopted the faith of those who needed to be cremated. They gave the dead the dignity that the pandemic had taken from them.At one point this journey turned deeply personal for Barkha. She lost her father to COVID. But she soldiered on and the result is this compelling book. A historical account, oral histories of the most disadvantaged; their grief, sometimes their hubris, often their humanity. As a journalist Barkha has covered some of the biggest stories in the nation. Of the many, she mentions that her eventful career was bookended by the war in Kargil in 1999 and the Covid crisis in 2021.In what was a staid and almost pedagogic profession—as journalism in India used to be—she was one of the new breed of TV journalists, aggressive with an eye on one prize alone...the story.I had the privilege to host a live session with Barkha at the recent Bangalore Literature Festival and doubly my privilege now to welcome her as my guest today.ABOUT BARKHA DUTTBarkha Dutt is one of India's foremost broadcast journalists. The concept of a "Mama Bear" needs no explanation. It instantly calls to mind a completely competent defender of the little bear cubs against whatever threatens those little ones. We have the founder of Mama Bear Apologetics, and the editor of the book "Mama Bear Apologetics: Empowering Your Kids to Challenge Cultural Lies," Hillary Ferrer. Like the branding, Hillary's aim is to help parents come to terms with the fact they are the first line of apologetic defense for their kids hearts and minds, and frankly, not many people are squared away for the task. Mama Bear Apologetics seeks to meet the need by providing resources for parents to become the competent defender that the idea "Mama Bear" brings to mind. We have a wonderful discussion especially about how you can track and handle manipulation of language. Dr. Mather shares his anecdotes of handling the manipulation of the term "Marriage" on college campuses in LA as an example. Check the organization out at at https://mamabearapologetics.com/ and on the various social media platforms. The book can be viewed here : https://www.amazon.com/Mama-Bear-Apologetics-Empowering-Challenge/dp/0736976159/ref=asc_df_0736976159/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=353812732445&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=70808839475678306&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9031587&hvtargid=pla-760993502298&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=78235181744&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=353812732445&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=70808839475678306&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9031587&hvtargid=pla-760993502298 The Republican Professor is a pro-Mama-Bear, pro-Apologetics-done-well, pro-you-are-your-own-first-responder, pro-pay-attention-to-manipulation-of-language podcast. I think that is the kind of thing where if you don't have a million followers on Instagram, that helps you get known and seen just from organic search." - Jamie Stone "Actually, a good tip, too, is that many people feel like, oh, if I'm not constantly updating this, I should just delete it altogether. It's like, well, if the content is good, you should just leave it there. It's not gonna do any harm." - Jamie Stone "Exclusive content is always a good idea to get people to subscribe to say, if you subscribe to my email newsletter, I'll give you five of my favorites, whatever it is. Things like that really help promote the blog post with email." - Jamie Stone "I've noticed a lot of bloggers are not posting their content on Twitter anymore. And I think it's a huge myth. If you have a Twitter account, you should be posting there. It takes two seconds. It's not hurting anybody." - Jamie Stone Resource mentioned: Fiverr Connect with Jamie Stone: Instagram honestlyjamie.com Podcast: A Little Too Much with Jamie Stone   Connect with April Meese: aprilmeese.com Email: support@aprilmeese.com LinkedIn Instagram Facebook
