In our last AAP podcast of 2023, Chris Versace is joined by his former Stocks Under $10 partner in crime and author of the Morning Recon at Real Money Pro, Stephen “Sarge” Guilfoyle. The conversation begins with why Sarge gets up at 3:30 AM ET every morning but quickly gets into the two discussing the market's meteoric rise since late October. Neither thinks the Fed will cut interest rates 6 to 7 times next year but both agree that if it's more than three rate cuts it could be a much bigger issue for investors. Both also express concern over market expectations for the basket of S&P 500 companies to grow their earnings by more than 11% in 2024 compared to 2023. Sarge and Chris also agree the current market melt-up is likely to continue into early 2024, but both are wary about the start of the December quarter earnings season. With that in mind, Sarge points out that the January-February time frame can be a tricky time for the market and a challenging one for investors. That's why we at AAP have used the market's strength and now overbought condition to selectively book some of the big moves in our positions, building our shopping list and continuing to own our market hedging, inverse ETF positions.

In this episode, Tracey is joined by Brian Bolan, Zacks Equity Strategist and Editor of the Game Changers and Stocks Under $10 portfolios. Berkshire Hathaway (BRKB) just held its annual shareholder meeting in Omaha which draws thousands of faithful Warren Buffett fans every year. As a result, for the entire weekend, the financial press was filled with quotes from Warren Buffett. Additionally, after the meeting, Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger and Bill Gates were interviewed for several hours on CNBC about their views on the economy and the stocks that Berkshire Hathaway owns, including IBM (IBM), Wells Fargo, American Express and Coca-Cola. Warren Buffett has given out a lot of advice over the years. But should you be following it? Brian has never been a Buffett fan, but being a value investor, Tracey has read books and articles about the Oracle of Omaha over the years. She was once a Berkshire Hathaway shareholder (of the B shares.) Have times changed since Buffett was investing in the 1970s which makes his advice less applicable to today’s market? And does the size of Berkshire Hathaway, which is a large cap, mean that Buffett can no longer invest in the small cap value names he was famous for? Brian does like one aspect of Buffett’s investing advice and that’s the buy and hold strategy but thinks the “hold” part is the most difficult for most investors. Tracey’s not a fan of the large cap dividend paying stocks that seem to dominate Berkshire’s stock portfolio now. Tracey and Brian discuss what stocks they like now (hint, they aren’t IBM.) Brian likes the disruptor technologies like the lending companies such as OnDeck Capital (ONDK) and Lending Club but also is a fan of the old line companies like Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) if you’re investing for the long haul and looking for a dividend. Tracey, following Buffett’s lead, likes companies with well known brands such as Snap-On (SNA) and Bank of the Ozarks (OZRK). Is the Oracle of Omaha still worth listening to in 2016? Check out this week’s podcast to find out. Snap-On Inc - http://www.zacks.com/stock/quote/SNA?cid=cs-soundcloud-ft-pod Bank of Ozarks: http://www.zacks.com/stock/quote/OZRK?cid=cs-soundcloud-ft-pod OnDeck Capital: http://www.zacks.com/stock/quote/ONDK?cid=cs-soundcloud-ft-pod Johnson & Johnson: http://www.zacks.com/stock/quote/JNJ?cid=cs-soundcloud-ft-pod Berkshire Hathaway: http://www.zacks.com/stock/quote/BRKB?cid=cs-soundcloud-ft-pod IBM: http://www.zacks.com/stock/quote/IBM?cid=cs-soundcloud-ft-pod Follow us on StockTwits: stocktwits.com/ZacksResearch Follow us on Twitter: twitter.com/ZacksResearch Like us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/ZacksInvestmentResearch
Welcome to Episode #23 of the Zacks Market Edge Podcast. Every week, host and Zacks stock strategist, Tracey Ryniec, will be joined by guests to discuss the hottest investing topics in stocks, bonds and ETFs and how it impacts your life. In this episode, Tracey is joined by Brian Bolan, Zacks Equity Strategist and Editor of the Game Changer and Stocks Under $10 services, to discuss how Jack Dorsey is doing so far at the helm of not just one, but two public companies: Twitter (TWTR) and Square (SQ). Can Twitter Be Saved? A co-founder of Twitter, he was appointed CEO in October 2015 while, at the same time, he took his other business, financial software and lending provider Square Inc, public. Just going IPO is enough to send even seasoned CEOs ducking for cover, let alone trying to run another business, one of which is struggling. Do you use Twitter? If you answered “no”, you’re not alone. Twitter’s core monthly users fell to 305 million in the fourth quarter from 307 million in the prior quarter as the platform struggles to obtain new users. Yet it’s still expected to grow revenue at a double digit rate in 2016. Shares fell to new post-IPO lows in 2016. What will Dorsey have to do to turn it around? Or is Twitter a lost cause? Square Reports For the First Time Square recently reported its first earnings report as a public company. It was better than expected, even though the company isn’t profitable and it took a wider loss in the quarter than a year ago. But revenue rose 49% in the quarter. One big area of possible growth is in Square Capital, its lending arm. It extended $400 million in loans in 2015 through 70,000 advances to 50,000 of its 2 million customers. But there’s a lot of competition in this space. On Deck Capital (ONDK) and LendingClub Corporation (LC) have been in the small business loan market for a while. Last quarter, On Deck saw loan origination rise 51% year over year. LendingClub’s jumped 91%. None of these players has significant market share, yet, which means there are opportunities there.
