1. The holiday is over and the markets are coming under a little selling pressure this morning. Last week's light trading volume favored upside and that is what we saw. This week we are seeing some weakness in tech, energy and some retails stocks. 2. Surprisingly enough the leading Chinese ADR's are catching a bid despite protests in China over their zero-covid policy. Stocks such as BAAB, JD and BIDU are all trading higher. I would not expect this, but that is often how the markets work. They will do the opposite of what most of us would think.  3. Oil and most energy stocks are under pressure this morning. We are being told energy is down because of the China zero-covid policy so we shall see where this finishes the session. I'm starting to get interested in oil at these levels. 4. Gold is down a touch today. Either way, gold is holding up fine and could be setting up for another move higher. 5. Bitcoin is a bit on the weak side this morning. It is still trading above the 16K level but ultimately should head lower as the large time frame chart is signaling a move down to 11,700. If you are nibbling on Bitcoin be careful to not overstay your welcome.

There was a flash crash due to broker and fund managers not selling large blocks of shares around the Communist Party's National Congress, says Kevin Carter. The main earnings season message is: don't miss, says Kevin Gordon. He discusses how stocks are mixed as a big week for earnings begins. 1. Markets are mixed this morning. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is higher by 0.65%, meanwhile the tech heavy NASDAQ Composite is lower by 1.0%. I'm always sceptical and cautious when the DJIA shows leadership. Either, nothing has changed despite the Fed's chatter of a possible pivot after this next rate hike on November 2nd. 1A. Chinese large caps are getting hammered today. $BABA, JD, BIDU and others are down after president Xi gets reelected. China also has another lockdown going on in a major city. I also believe the economic data was weak this weekend as well.   2. Energy seems to be the strong industry group to start the week. Oil is basically flat, the leading energy stocks are gaining ground. Natural gas (NG) is finally catching a bid today as it was beaten up ast week during options expiration. Full disclosure: I own UNG and UNG call options. 3. Gold is slumping a little today. As you know, gold can bounce here but a major bottom is still down the road a bit. 4. Bitcoin is upticking a little today. It is trading around 19,260. This is still chopping around right now, but ultimately it is going lower. 

Baidu (BIDU) earnings report indicated $2.36 in EPS, beating the estimate. Baidu autonomous ride-hailing service Apollo Go provider 287K rides in the second quarter. Baidu monthly active users reached 628M in June. "Other social media platforms are competing in terms of advertising budgets. There is great uncertainty whether any of their new businesses can be monetized successfully on a mass scale. Leadership and brand in search have been weakened by more competitors entering the market," says Lee Bohl. "Baidu (BIDU) earnings beat is likely driven by strong growth in cloud business. The question is how much longer the Chinese government plans to continue their lockdown policy. The proposed U.S. and China agreement to allow inspection of books could be a game changer," Kevin Riley adds.
