"You cannot not believe in science," says Tsvetta Kaleynska. She sees biotech companies outperforming in 2025 despite a slow start to the year. Tsvetta argues investors need to understand that many companies don't just produce medicine, but also medical supplies, which contributes to profits. She sees Abivax (ABVX) as an international outperformer and expects Eli Lilly (LLY) to make a comeback in the weight loss drug market. Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) convened its earnings call on Tuesday, January 23rd, 2024, providing insights on the state of the company and the direction it hopes to take in the near future. Joaquin Duato, CEO of Johnson & Johnson, expressed contentment with the company's performance, particularly within their pulmonary franchise. "Overall, we're very happy with the trajectory of our pulmonary franchise in 2023. And we expect a similar trajectory as macitentan, OPSUMIT, and Tadalafil become standard of care", Duato stated during the earnings call. The year 2023 saw Johnson & Johnson report full-year sales of $85.2 billion, reflecting a growth rate of 7.4%. According to the earnings call, this performance was largely attributed to key products in their Innovative Medicine business such as DARZALEX, ERLEADA, STELARA, and TREMFYA, contributing substantially to the company's Oncology division. Following the recent launch of CARVYKTI, TECVAYLI, TALVEY, and SPRAVATO, Johnson & Johnson has broadened its scope in the oncology market. The firm also mentioned on the call that despite the ongoing recovery from the global pandemic, they marked notable increases in electrophysiology, heart recovery, surgery, orthopedics, and Vision, surpassing pre-pandemic levels in their MedTech business. Johnson & Johnson also shared its prospective plans and investment strategies. Acknowledged in the call, the company intends to allocate $15 billion towards research and development in 2023, underlining their commitment to innovation and pipeline advancement. In an effort to strengthen their oncology portfolio, JNJ plans to pursue strategic acquisitions, notably Ambrx, while simultaneously focusing on commercial execution, product differentiation, and expansion within the MedTech sector, as stated in the earnings call. The Johnson & Johnson earnings call highlighted steady financial performance and constant growth. With a focus on research and development, the company aims to introduce innovative products and engage in strategic acquisitions to support long-term growth and sustainability. As mentioned in the earnings call, amidst a competitive healthcare industry, the attributes that distinguish Johnson & Johnson are their emphasis on innovation and their dedication to meeting the evolving needs of patients globally. Remaining cautiously optimistic, it's important to note that these are plans based on the current circumstances and market trends, the actualization of which is dependent on a plethora of internal and external factors. This week's Alpha Trader podcast features hosts Aaron Task and Stephen Alpher talking with Scott Martin, head of research at Kramer Capital Research. What might have been an episode focusing on the ramifications of last week's elections instead was dominated by Monday morning's vaccine update - Pfizer and BioNTech announcing positive preliminary data for their Covid-19 candidate. That news sent the Dow higher by more than 5% and the S&P 500 more than 3.5% at the time of recording. The Nasdaq - which housed many of the pandemic-favorite, work-from-home names - was in the red. Martin reminds that the Pfizer news might not be the golden bullet that ends the pandemic, and suggests the market may be over-reacting (indeed, by the close on Monday, the S&P had more than halved its early gain and the Nasdaq closed down 1.5%). He also notes that e-commerce isn't going away. A stock like Chewy (CHWY) - which fell nearly 12% on Monday - might be thought of as a pandemic stock, but it's really the future of pet supplies. Investors who missed the rip this year might be getting a buying opportunity. Treasurys are trash, says Martin. Why lock in an (inflation-adjusted) loss, says Martin, when names like Pfizer (PFE), General Mills (GIS), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) - practically as safe as the government - yield plenty more? Getting to an election-related idea, the hosts and Martin discuss how to play the potential national de-criminalization of cannabis. Stay away from the growers, says Martin, as that's a commodity business. Instead, look for ways to invest in the consumer angle - gummies, edibles, soaps. Procter & Gamble (PG), Unilver (UL), General Mills may all get involved. As for pot names, Martin has been and continues to be a fan of Aphria (APHA) - medicinal, growing market share, into conventional pharma sales in Europe, and nearing profitability. Under any circumstances, Martin believes marijuana investments should be minor positions around one's major holdings. Markets roar higher due to options trading in the back ground, potential for more stimulus, good to see the green again. This is how the 11 stock market sectors are doing in 2020 compared against 2019 (% as of September 28, 2020): 11. Energy, -48.56% Companies in the energy sector explore, produce, refine, and market fuels such as oil, natural gas, and coal. Every company associated with the above, whether selling equipment to explore natural gas or refine oil, is also considered part of the energy sector. For example, companies include Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM), Kinder Morgan (KMI), and Halliburton Co. (HAL) 10. Financials, -15.59% Companies in the financial sector deal with money, whether that be banking, capital markets, consumer finance, financial services, insurance, mortgages, or thrifts. When the finance sector collapses, others usually follow. This is one reason why the government bailed out several banks during the 2008 financial crisis (and why they’ve done so several times in the past). For example, companies include Bank of America Corp. (BAC), Visa (V), and PayPal Holdings (PYPL). 9. Real Estate, -11.42% Companies in the real estate sector include equity real estate investment trusts, and real estate management and development. One of the fastest-growing sectors in recent decades is real estate. With gains of around 97% since 2007. For example, companies include Redfin Corp. (RDFN), American Tower Corp. (AMT), and Simon Property Group (SPG). CHECK OUT: 5 low-risk investment opportunities right now. 8. Utilities, -8.97% Companies in the utility sector include electric utilities, gas utilities, renewable electricity producers, and water utilities. This highly regulated sector means the government keeps profit in check. Ensuring massive monopolies don’t charge ridiculous amounts for provinces that aren’t near water or power-plants. For example, companies include NextEra Energy (NEE), Duke Energy (DUK), and Exelon Corp. (EXC). 7. Industrials, -0.69% Companies in the industrial sector include aerospace, defense, air freight, airlines, building products, commercial services, construction, engineering, industrial conglomerates, machinery, marine industries, road, rail, and transportation infrastructure. The industrial sector includes many iconic blue-chip U.S. companies and an ideal place to do due diligence for long-term stock investments. For example, companies include Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT), General Electric Co. (GE), and Caterpillar (CAT). 6. Consumer Staples, +4.07% Companies in the consumer staples sector include beverages, food retail, food products, household products, personal products, and tobacco. Due to the fact people always need products like toilet paper, soap, shampoo, etc., companies classed as offering consumer staples can make good long-term investments. That’s if they’re a popular and trusted brand or premises. So always do your due diligence. For example, companies include Coca-Cola Co. (KO), Procter & Gamble Co. (PG), and Walmart (WMT) 5. Materials, +8.63% Companies in the materials sector include chemicals, construction, containers, packaging, metals, mining, and forest products (paper). If the company turns raw materials into useful components, whether processed or natural, it is likely part of the materials’ stock market sector. For example, companies include Vale S.A. (VALE), Ecolab (ECL), and Rio Tinto (RIO). 4. Health Care, +14.45% Companies in the health care sector include biotechnology, equipment, supplies, providers, technology, life sciences, and pharmaceuticals. Health care falls into two categories, the application of services, technology, and medicine, or the creation of services, technology, and medicine. Like a few other sectors, health care is growing faster than the national economy. For example, companies include Abbott Laboratories (ABT), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), and Pfizer (PFE). CHECK OUT: 10 stocks to watch if you’re on a budget of $10 or less. 3. Communication services, +14.73% Companies in the communication services sector include telecommunications, entertainment, interactive media, media, and wireless telecommunications. This sector is defined as media companies that also facilitate communication. It had to be defined as such as major companies that offered communication unified to provide internet, TV, mobile, and now even develop content for platforms. For example, companies include Comcast Corp. (CMCSA), Walt Disney Co. (DIS), and Verizon Communications (VZ). 2. Consumer Discretionary, +26.02% Companies in the consumer discretionary sector include communication equipment, electronic equipment, components, IT services, semiconductors, software, technology hardware, including storage and peripherals. Also known as the consumer cyclical sector, it encompasses everything that isn’t a day-to-day consumer necessity. For example, companies include Carnival Corp. (CCL), Grubhub (GRUB), and Lululemon Athletica (LULU). 1. Information Technology, +43.32% Companies in the information technology sector include automobile components and services, distributors, consumer services, hotels, restaurants, leisure, household durables, internet marketing, direct marketing, multiline and specialty retail, plus textiles, apparel, and luxury goods. Geographically dominated by Silicon Valley, the information technology sector is the #1 stock market sector so far this century. For example, companies include Apple (AAPL), Cisco Systems (CSCO), and Intel Corp. (INTC). See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week's Alpha Trader podcast features hosts Aaron Task and Stephen Alpher talking COVID-19 treatments and vaccinations with Adam Feuerstein of Stat News. Much of the treatment talk has been about Gilead's (GILD) remdesivir, and Feuerstein - who has been at the center of much of the reporting - takes us through those ups and downs. First, there was anecdotal evidence on April 16 out of Chicago which suggested the drug as being almost miraculously effective - the news set off a nice move higher in Gilead (more on that later), and a furious rally in the broader markets. Next, there was a "leak" one week later out of the WHO that a trial of the drug in China was a flop - the news took the starch out of a sizable rally in stocks that day. Finally, one day after that, there was a report that results from U.S. government's all-important trial of remdesivir were going to hit in mid-May, and chatter that those results might show the drug as being effective. Feuerstein does find it somewhat curious that Gilead's stock rises and falls with the news about remdesivir given that the company has more or less said it will give the drug away (after recouping costs). The halo effect? Possibly, but Gilead has added nearly $20B in market cap over the past three months. In any case, Gilead reports Q1 earnings after the close on Thursday - it might make for a good time to report on remdesivir results from one of the company trials (not from the above-mentioned U.S. government trial). Feuerstein reminds that remdesivir is only a treatment for COVID-19, and even in a best-case scenario will be effective in curing only certain patients. What the world ultimately needs is a vaccine, and there are currently five in clinical development, i.e. being tested on people. There are a number of others in pre-clinical development as well. One of the more advanced at this time is Moderna (MRNA), and that stock has nearly tripled over the past couple of months. Major pharmaceutical players (and experienced vaccine hands) Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Pfizer (PFE), GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), and Sanofi (SNY) are also hard at work. Vaccines, however, take time to develop. If all goes right, says Feuerstein, we're looking at 12-18 months. Any stumbles, and it would take even longer.

There’s an old market adage to buy when there’s “blood in the streets.” But there are plenty of ways to draw blood. In today’s litigious society, one such way is with a big lawsuit. From hot cups of coffee to weed killer that may be cancerous, it’s no surprise that America still leads the world in producing lawyers who need something to do—which usually means finding someone with deep pockets to sue. While many cases have their merits, a favorable jury will often hand out pretty sizeable sums—and that kind of news can set back the shares of a company’s price. The days of the biggest legal battle of them all, regarding the tobacco companies and healthcare costs, seem long past. But are they? In the twenty-first century, new legal battles are forming. And one place they’re forming in are in the opioid space. Abuse of opioids—legally and illegally—have been on the rise for a long time, and some places are starting to go after the companies that manufacture them. While some pharma companies have already settled with states to avoid the potential for large jury payouts, one company is bucking the trend. Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) is defending itself against the state of Oklahoma, which is suing the company on the basis that it helped to fuel the crisis. While we don’t know yet how this trial will end, we do know that these often high-visibility trails don’t kill companies—although they do hurt their share price in the short-run. From McDonald’s to the tobacco space, buying during times of literal trial are often the most profitable. Not sure the best way to get started? Follow these simple steps to hit the ground running... Bill was at Johnson and Johnson (JNJ)as Worldwide President of their ENT Division. Individuals who sit on five or more corporate boards - particularly at the largest U.S. corporations -- may not have the bandwidth to focus enough energy and time on each company's strategic and operational issues. At least that's the view of Kurt Schulzke, associate professor of Accounting & Law at the University of North Georgia and director of Kennesaw State University's Corporate Governance Center. Schultzke spoke with The Deal's Activist Investing Today podcast about overboarded directors, and his finding that some of the best-performing companies in the U.S., such as Starbucks Corp. (SBUX), Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), have directors who don't serve on many other boards.
This episode we discuss start with a review of the overall market and our stocks performance. Stock Stories | Case Studies and Mental Models for Individual Investors
It's one of the largest healthcare companies in the world. From medical devices, to drugs, to Band-Aids and Tylenol, Johnson and Johnson is the premier healthcare conglomerate in the United States. Johnson and Johnson's quality of earnings is so high, I am willing to bet that they are a company that will actually be around and earning a profit 50 years from now. I found their credo inspiring, and their de-centralized business model helps them continue to grow at a steady pace in spite of their size.
Welcome to Episode #54 of the Zacks Market Edge Podcast. Every week, host and Zacks stock strategist, Tracey Ryniec, will be joined by guests to discuss the hottest investing topics in stocks, bonds and ETFs and how it impacts your life. In this episode, Tracey is joined by Jeremy Mullin, editor of Zacks Counterstrike portfolio service. For 10 years, Jeremy has been trading the after-hours trading sessions, both before the open and after the market closes. Tracey and Jeremy discuss the trading platforms you need to trade in the after-hours. It’s not as complicated as you may think. What are some of Jeremy’s top tips to trading stocks in the after-hours? 1. Stay away from “thick” stocks like Pfizer (PFE) that won’t have big moves. 2. Look for thinner stocks with bigger spreads, especially the hot stocks that will make big moves like Netflix (NFLX) and Baidu (BIDU) 3. Be nimble. Don’t be stubborn. 4. “You never go broke taking profits.” And there’s more. Jeremy and Tracey discuss the after-hours trade on some recent earnings reports including Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and Domino’s Pizza (DPZ). What about trading the first earnings reports on recent IPOs? Jeremy shares his thoughts about jumping in on those in the after-hours. Want to know some of the lessons Jeremy has learned over the last decade? Tune into this week’s podcast to find out. Welcome to Episode #40 of the Zacks Market Edge Podcast. Every week, host and Zacks stock strategist, Tracey Ryniec, will be joined by guests to discuss the hottest investing topics in stocks, bonds and ETFs and how it impacts your life. In this episode, Tracey is joined by Kevin Cook, Zacks Senior Stock Strategist and Editor of the Tactical Trader portfolio service. Kevin was on the podcast in January 2016 as stocks sold off, discussing what investors should do, and now he’s back just 6 months later with stocks at new all time highs. But the questions remain the same as in January: 1. What should investors do now? 2. Where are there values or opportunities? In June, Kevin discussed in a video how the S&P 500 could actually get to 2200 despite market valuations and sluggish growth. His conclusions then were that the Central Banks were making US equities the “stars” of investing. Basically, with bond yields so low, or negative, there is no other alternative. Additionally, the dividend yield on the S&P 500 is around 2%, which is much higher than the yield on the US 10-year. You can watch his video here. A lot of investors also have questions about valuations. Neither Tracey nor Kevin think that the S&P 500 is overvalued here. But, investors have to be picky. Many large cap stocks, even those with great fundamentals, have expensive valuations. Lockheed Martin (LMT), which just had a great second quarter earnings report, has a forward P/E of about 22. Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), which just guided higher for the year, has a forward P/E of 18. Neither is cheap. IBM (IBM) is one of the few large caps that seems to have value. It trades with a forward P/E of just 12. Where else should investors be looking for stock ideas? 1. The small caps haven’t yet reached new highs but do your homework. 2. Tracey and Kevin like the medical sector and there are opportunities outside of biotechs such as with the medical staffing companies like AMN Healthcare Services (AHS). 3. There are also some opportunities in technology with companies like Ambarella (AMBA). During market pullbacks, and during bull runs, Tracey and Kevin agree that there are always stock opportunities. What other tips do they have about buying at market tops? Tune into this week’s podcast to find out. In this episode, Tracey is joined by Kevin Matras, Zacks Vice President and portfolio manager of Zacks Options Trader service to talk about stock options: what they are and how you can trade them. Tracey admits she has never traded an option so Kevin starts off with the basics. What is an option? Options provide 3 advantages over regular stock trading: 1. Limited Risk 2. Leverage 3. Flexibility But there’s a bunch of things that beginners should learn before jumping in. What’s a call and a put? What’s the easiest of the two to use for beginning traders? Tracey always hears about being “in the money.” What does that mean? Kevin takes Tracey through three option examples that beginners would be able to execute, including Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Simon Property Group (SPG) and Facebook (FB). With Facebook, he takes it one step further and discusses a bull call spread that can limit the profit potential but is a common strategy when options are expensive. While the options “lingo” may sound complex, “bull call what ???”, Kevin lays it out so even Tracey can understand it. If you’ve ever wondered how options work or thought about trying to trade them, then this is a must-listen podcast. In this episode, Tracey is joined by Brian Bolan, Zacks Equity Strategist and Editor of the Game Changers and Stocks Under $10 portfolios. Berkshire Hathaway (BRKB) just held its annual shareholder meeting in Omaha which draws thousands of faithful Warren Buffett fans every year. As a result, for the entire weekend, the financial press was filled with quotes from Warren Buffett. Additionally, after the meeting, Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger and Bill Gates were interviewed for several hours on CNBC about their views on the economy and the stocks that Berkshire Hathaway owns, including IBM (IBM), Wells Fargo, American Express and Coca-Cola. Warren Buffett has given out a lot of advice over the years. But should you be following it? Brian has never been a Buffett fan, but being a value investor, Tracey has read books and articles about the Oracle of Omaha over the years. She was once a Berkshire Hathaway shareholder (of the B shares.) Have times changed since Buffett was investing in the 1970s which makes his advice less applicable to today’s market? And does the size of Berkshire Hathaway, which is a large cap, mean that Buffett can no longer invest in the small cap value names he was famous for? Brian does like one aspect of Buffett’s investing advice and that’s the buy and hold strategy but thinks the “hold” part is the most difficult for most investors. Tracey’s not a fan of the large cap dividend paying stocks that seem to dominate Berkshire’s stock portfolio now. Tracey and Brian discuss what stocks they like now (hint, they aren’t IBM.) Brian likes the disruptor technologies like the lending companies such as OnDeck Capital (ONDK) and Lending Club but also is a fan of the old line companies like Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) if you’re investing for the long haul and looking for a dividend. Tracey, following Buffett’s lead, likes companies with well known brands such as Snap-On (SNA) and Bank of the Ozarks (OZRK). Is the Oracle of Omaha still worth listening to in 2016? Check out this week’s podcast to find out. In this episode, Tracey is joined by Zacks’ Vice President, Editor of the Options Trader service and Zacks stock screening guru, Kevin Matras. The stock market is rocky to start the year, how can investors keep their emotions in check to find the best stocks to invest in? Kevin’s advice is to have a plan, whether it be stop-losses or something else, and stick to it. Kevin also divulges his favorite stock screens that use both fundamental and technical analysis to find the best Zacks #1 (Strong Buy) and #2 (Buy) stocks. They are screens he runs all the time. If you’re going to be invested in a volatile stock market, you might as well buy the stocks that have the best fundamentals. Kevin and Tracey also talk about the more basic stock screens that anyone can run that you can find on Zacks.com on the Screening tab. If you’re a Zacks Premium member, or if you take the 30-day free trial, you can access 20 more predefined screens that combine the Zacks Rank with Growth and Value criteria. These are some of the screens that Tracey runs regularly. Finally, Kevin and Tracey have stocks that they like even though this market seems ominous. They have different trading strategies. Kevin screens for stocks near their highs with solid fundamentals. Tracey likes stocks that have sold off. They both like the healthcare sector, with Lannett Inc. (LCI), Unitedhealth Group (UNH) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) being top picks. But a utility company, yes, a utility, and a defense contractor also make the grade. Still nervous about this stock market? Listen to this week’s podcast for Kevin and Tracey’s best ways to play this market pullback.
