Your brain is gonna come up with reasons for you to believe that you can't do it. But if somebody can do it, you can do it too. Step out of your own way. Aim high. Be grateful for the things you succeeded at, even if that success wasn't perfect. Also, remember that a goal without a deadline is just a dream. Move your deadline up when making your own goals and earlier than everyone else. "You don't have to look at history to create your story. Your story gets to be your story and you can make it however you want by just realizing the only reason you have that story is that that's what you're telling yourself. John was never in an MLM, but both of his parents were, as he juggled living between their homes. From an MLM hobbyist mother, who ran the gamut from Avon to Tastefully Simple, to John's deeply entrenched Herbalife peddling father, MLM was all around him growing up. I knew getting the perspective of the victims we don't think about, and the side effects of dragging children through the toxic complex of MLM would produce some eye opening discussions. Our conversation started off light but ended up getting pretty deep into some topics I didn't expect, like food poverty, the long lasting effects of growing up in hustle culture, and the buried feelings John has about what he was subjected to as a minor, often against his own will. “Sales will take you anywhere.” That skill took Jill Blashack Strahan from a small farm town where she ran a café and didn’t dare to dream much bigger to founder and CEO of national meal prep brand Tastefully Simple. At its peak in 2008, Tastefully Simple hit $143 million in sales with 20,000 sales associates executing home parties in small towns and big cities across the country. Mission: bringing people together to answer that age-old question, “What are we going to eat for dinner?” But after hitting that peak, sales began to slide. And slide. For 11 straight years, Tastefully Simple lost ground. For nearly seven years, there was no profit whatsoever. Strahan invested her own money to keep the company afloat—ignoring the advice of several turnaround consultants. “I just believed in my heart it was not time to give up on this.” Indeed, Tastefully Simple is once again profitable. With a much leaner executive team and renewed focus on sales and marketing training, Tastefully Simple was well positioned to pivot to virtual parties during the Covid-19 pandemic and has benefitted from renewed interest in home cooking and a desire to socialize—even if over Zoom—around food. Strahan takes us on her entrepreneurial—the jobs that led to her a-ha moment and the sacrifice it took to pull it off. “Fear is a great motivator,” she says. But what would a business professor have told her during the dark days of declining sales? After our conversation with Strahan, we go Back to the Classroom with the University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business. Professor David Deeds, the Schulze Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship points out the fundamental difference between founder and CEO. “There’s a commitment and passion in an entrepreneur that is different than in a CEO. In terms of economics, she should have found a buyer. But from a personal standpoint, it made sense to keep going.”

Jinny Ditzler (author, Your Best Year Yet) "Live your best life by answering these 10 questions; begin by looking back at where you've been." Jon Gordon (author of The Energy Bus) "Stay positive. Too often we give it away: To bad weather, traffic, crabby coworkers. Feed yourself so you can feed others." Meg Meeker, MD (parenting expert, author, pediatrician) “Parents are so much more worried today. They so desperately want to be ‘good parents’ that they’re exhausting important energy on stuff that doesn’t matter.” Mike Matheny (head coach, St. Louis Cardinals) "Discipline, toughness, enthusiasm and selflessness. If you have these, you've maximized what you can control." Mike's story reminds us "Leadership is caught not taught." Rocky Sickmann (veteran, former POW) "Freedom is not free." Rocky is an epic reminder of the sacrifices made by men and women in the military AND: We tend to focus on the big things, but its the little things that give us the most joy. Dale Partridge (author & entrepreneur) "Sometimes a company can grow faster than people. Prioritize what actually matters... and act with honor. We need more people who can say 'follow my example.'" Jill Blashack Strahan (founder, Tastefully Simple and author) "If you don't have motors in your life, the anchors are going to pull you down and drown you. Be around positive people that pull you up and plant positivity, not fear." Wm. Paul Young (author of THE SHACK; movie debuted in March) "When you have fear you either control or you trust. Choose trust."  Travis Thomas (author, coach and Yes And! founder) Travis gave us a concrete tool to  get unstuck in life and relationship. Do not miss it! Kim Scott (podcaster; past exec, Google; book Radical Candor published in March) Kim debunks the popular phrase "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" and taught us to serve others and achieve goals, through radical candor: Speaking honestly from a place of love. 250,000 have chosen to wake up and live inspired with us through the Live Inspired Podcast. If you don't have motors in your life and you do have anchors, the anchors are going to pull you down and drown you. Be around positive people that pull you up and plant positivity, not fear. Jill Blashack Strahan shared this when reflecting on how she found significance and success as Founder & CEO of Tastefully Simple, despite experiencing tragic loss when her spouse and two brothers died much too early in life.  As a speaker, Jill often asks her audiences to "Think back to a time when you have been filled with fear. Did you get through it? Do you believe you are stronger because of it?" She continues by sharing her personal story as a mirror: "I tell them, I've been there. I made it through. You can make it through too." You are going to love hearing from my dear friend, client & author. From simple joys growing up on a dairy farm in Minnesota to the wisdom her grandmother continues to share today through books she recommended decades ago: Jill's story will remind you that you were put on this earth to shine. My Main Takeaways:  What Jill learned from falling in love with an alcoholic and joining the Al-Anon community: Let go go of behavior with love. We love the person, hate the behavior. These ideas were key in shaping my life. The Serenity Prayer helped Jill to not be reactive and stay centered during the hardest times in her life. Jill's wild success ($14k annually to $100+ million in 8 years) is tied in part to her objective: "To help people become more of who they are." Fear is about what we're thinking. Thoughts control emotions. Emotions control actions. Don't get caught up in fear. We say 'why me' when bad things happen, but why not say 'why not me'? What makes me so special? If you don't have motors in your life and you have anchors, they are going to pull you down and drown you. Be around positive people that pull you up and plant positivity, not fear. Whatever is given to you is meant to be a gift in some way, it's not a way to hurt you or pull you down or destroy you. Fear is a gatekeeper to strength always.  Business is about ebb and flow and finding the "new right answer." I have learned so much in the last two years, we changed our paradigm, from home tasting parties to one-to-one & online channels.  Order your copy of Jill's book Simply Shine here. Learn more about having Jill speak here. Setting goals & creating a game plan is critically important. Jill never made more than $14,000 a year and was working out of her shed when she launched Tastefully Simple. Within 5 years, her business was worth $11.8 million. Her SMART goal had been $11 million in 5 years Life is a learning process. "We learned as we went along and reserved the right to get smarter and build trust with people. We promised we would deliver something excellent, but acknowledged we may stumble along the way to getting it right. The team approach was huge. It took the pressure off of people as they joined us - we didn't have to be perfect."    JILL BLASHACK STRAHAN'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach was significant for me. Today We Are Rich by Tim Sanders was another that was very timely for me. 2. Tomorrow you discover your wealthy uncle shockingly dies at the age of 103; leaving you millions. What would you do? I would give a lot that money away. Tastefully Simple has financially afforded me much in life. I would definitely want to build a park in little Villard, MN. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? Old photos that I don't have digitally. Especially so that my son Zach would have them, memories of his dad. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? It would be my Grandma Aida who gave me the books I mentioned. She was very well read and very understated. She was not one who espoused her intelligence, but I would love to know more about her perspective on life and our family dynamics. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Always go least to most, if you give too much and take away people lose trust. When in doubt do without. 6. Looking back, what advice would you give yourself at age 20? I would make sure that I knew the Maryann Williamson quote about worthiness and I would make sure that I knew that I am worthy and that God expects me to shine. That's one of the best things that shifted my thinking in my mid 30s. We are here to shine, not to feel unworthy. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? She helped people shine and become more of who they are.  *** If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe (to automatically get new episodes), rate & review (help spread the word!) this podcast anywhere you get your podcasts.
