Listening to John O'Leary's Podcast for today and it sure got me thinking about some things. If you have followed me for any length of time, you know that John's “Live Inspired Podcast” connects with me in a powerful way. Listen to this episode titled, “Fingerprints Don't Fade” - find it HERE. He reminds us about his story and the “fingerprints” that healthcare workers (namely nurses) leave on their patients as far as the care & love shown to them in their time of need. He recalls the story of when he was in the hospital after his burn accident where he recalls a very powerful moment when a nurse saved his life again, simply by being there and doing her job when the hospital lost power and his incubator was not working. Amazing stories here. But this got me thinking really on how all of us leave “fingerprints” with those that are in our lives - no matter what our occupation is. If we can remember this, maybe we might be more intent on making sure we are more positive, caring, patient, etc., with the people we deal with in life. Hope this gets you thinking like it did me. Make sure you check out John O'Leary's podcast and if you have any interaction with him - make sure you tell him that I sent you.
On this week's episode of the Baked-In podcast presented by Busey Bank, Josh had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with world renown inspirational speaker, podcaster and best-selling author John O'Leary. John just wrapped on the film adaptation of his 2016 book - On Fire: The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life. The movie will tell the story of O'Leary, who was burned on 100% of his body at age nine in a house fire. While this conversation could have gone in a million different directions, they spent the time together discussing the challenges of bringing this movie to the starting line and especially to St. Louis, the on-set culture John helped to foster with his daily presence and the lessons learned on set that had nothing to do with movie making. His infectious positivity is incredibly inspiring. His father told him that he could be a victim or he could chose to rise above. He then asked him a simple 3-word question: "Victim, or victor"?John definitely chose the latter. “What advice would you give yourself at age 20?” It's a question I've asked every single guest on the Live Inspired Podcast. And after 500 episodes, the answers always move me. As the interviewer, I always learn something from the answer. But it wasn't until the tables were turned and I was asked that question that I realized the true power of taking a moment to consider the answer in our own life. It forces us to take stock of both who we are today and revisit who we were.
It's been five years, 11 months and four days since the Live Inspired Podcast launched and 499 episodes later, I'm in awe that the Live Inspired movement has grown to hundreds of thousands of weekly listeners from all 50 states and more than 115 countries across the world. When deciding how to celebrate this special occasion, my team and I had some pretty grandiose ideas yet nothing seemed as meaningful and full circle as handing the microphone over to the person who was there when it all got started. Join me as Susan O'Leary, my mom and our very first guest, takes the reins to interview me with unexpected and hard-hitting questions, including for the first time ever -- the Live Inspired 7. Whether you're brand new or helped build the community from the ground up, this episode is for you.

“You can easily tell the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Years ago, I ran a small construction company. Continuously running material, picking up tools, and dropping lumber, I spent significant time in a truck with my General Contractor, Harold Stewart. Working together for almost a decade, Harold certainly taught me much about framing, wiring, plumbing and painting. The greatest lesson, though, was the power of consistent generosity. My friends, there are so many examples of selfish people, tragic events and senseless violence today. In a world as broken as ours we often wonder what we can do to make a difference. The example my friend- my brother- Harold models is a simple solution to the profound challenges we face today: Love people. Choose to be kind to the one in front of you. Choose to invest in relationships for the long term. And choose to be generous to those who can't repay it. It may not change the entire world, but unquestionably it will change the life of the one you serve. And perhaps that's how we begin making the actual change the world longs for today. “In our own woundedness, we can become sources of life for others.” – Henri J.M. Nouwen For more than a decade I've worked with the FOCUS Marines Foundation. This organization hosts struggling veterans for week-long retreats designed to provide support for complex physical and emotional issues related to military service. On this Memorial Day, I share the story of how the simple act cooking a meal can come to mean so much more. For nearly a decade, four military moms - all of whose lives have been impacted by veteran suicide - pour their hearts into a homemade meal for groups of veterans seeking support for the complex and often traumatic emotional burdens resulting from deployment. I'm honored to share a story of not just surviving impossible odds but thriving in a world that is too often caught up with how we look on the outside rather than seeing that our true value is within. When Kechi Okwuchi was 16 years old, she was one of just two survivors of a devastating plane crash that killed more than 100 people, many of them her classmates. Spending months in hospital recovering from the third-degree burns that covered more than 65% of her body, Kechi learned the power of perseverance, unrelenting faith and music's profound ability to heal. With courage, honesty and wit, Kechi shares her journey of healing, her fortitude in becoming a finalist on America's Got Talent and her boldness in choosing to not be defined by her scars. This conversation will give you the hope, strength and boldness to face life's challenges directly. Learn more about the Live Inspired Podcast at JohnOLearyInspires.com.
“Just because I am happy and loved, doesn't mean everyone else is. I know someone might be walking behind me who doesn't feel happy and doesn't feel loved. Maybe I can help them.” – Evan Ernst While we're thrilled our Live Inspired Podcast has been downloaded nearly 5,000,000 times, it's the stories of impact from individual listeners that most inspire our efforts. And there is something particularly special when one of the lives being impacted is a 12-year-old boy from South Dakota. Today, I share the story of Evan Ernst.
Kiana Clay is the first adaptive female motocross racer, top-ranked para-snowboarder and 2026 Paralympic hopeful. At 12 years old, Kiana suffered a traumatic brachial plexus injury on a motocross practice run that left her right arm paralyzed. While recovering from this accident, she was hit by a drunk driver, reversing any strength she was recovering and leaving her dominant arm permanently paralyzed. Although these circumstances certainly changed her life, Kiana is not letting them define her. Today, Kiana shares how she learned to accept her body, her struggle with depression, how she's learned to trust God and what led to her recent decision to have her injured arm amputated. This conversation is a reminder that you can't always choose the path you walk (or race!) in life, but you can always choose the manner in which you walk (or race!) it. Ignite Your Purpose (ft. John O'Leary)How John O'Leary went from out of the fire into the hearts of millionsOPENING QUOTE:“Jack taught me four things, real quick: say yes, show up, come back, bring friends. And that's what I want to do. We want to change the world one life at a time, starting with yours.”—John O'LearyGUEST BIO:John O'Leary is a two-time national bestselling author and world-renowned thought leader who, in 1987, was burned by a massive explosion in his home that left burns on 100% of his body. He was given less than a 1% chance to live. Today, John hosts the Live Inspired Podcast, which has more than 2.5 million downloads, and speaks to over 50,000 people every single year.Links:WebsiteFacebookLinkedInInstagramTwitterYoutubeCORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[2:10] - Being Awake vs. Feeling AliveThe moment John came to life was long after the fireFor two decades after the fire, John felt lost and directionless. Then he began to consider his talents, and how they could be used to create a life of purpose regardless of what had come before. Today, John speaks powerfully on the difference between simply being awake and feeling alive. We should all seek a life that makes us feel alive every day.[14:36] - A Ladder On the Wrong WallWhy relentless drive is nothing without purposeJohn describes a conversation he had with someone who obtained every material success, before succumbing to addiction and losing it all. The way he puts it, he had reached the top of the ladder— but the ladder was leaning up against the wrong wall. What are the ladders in our lives? Are we sure we're climbing toward a destination that's worth reaching?[21:28] - The Heroes That Make UsYou don't have to make yourself the protagonist in your storyIn the speaking industry where both Paul and John have made a career, it's easy for some speakers to slip into self-aggrandizing stories of their own achievements. But both our host and our guest prefer to focus on the impact of those who have touched their lives— after all, we are made by the people who shape us.[38:09] - The Power of EmpathyLove and grace through pain and sufferingAfter the fire that burned 100% of John's body and destroyed his parents home, John expected his father to be furious. Instead, he expressed how proud he was of John for getting through this tremendous trial. John never forgot the lesson in this experience— that a little empathy toward the people we love can transform their lives and our own.RESOURCES:[1:21] On Fire and In Awe, by John O'Leary[9:07] Live Inspired Podcast[18:47] Suicide Statistics in the U.S.[28:06] Big Brother Big SisterFollow John:WebsiteFacebookLinkedInInstagramTwitterYoutubeFollow Paul:Keynote Speaking WebsitePlaymakers PodcastThe Power of Playing OffenseLinkedInFacebookTwitterInstagramYoutubeSHOW PARTNER:The WHY InstituteAre you ready to find your ‘why'? After narrowly escaping the devastation of 9/11, Kushal Choksi recognized he had been so consumed in pursuing the “American dream” that he had forgotten to pursue his own. From being a Wall Street trader immersed in the material world, Kushal embarked on a quest to find answers to life's biggest questions. Today, hear Kushal share how he explored his doubts with spirituality, the peace he ultimately found and what it means for you. SHOW NOTES: Kushal grew up in a densely populated small town in India where he could drive a bike from one side to the other in 20 minutes. Beautiful balance: He admired his dad's razor-sharp intellect and refreshing happiness. For the first time since being in America, Kushal witnessed fear on 9/11. Ecclesiastes 12:8: “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Everything is meaningless!” While initially uncertain, Kushal began practicing SKY breathing with spiritual leader Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. SKY Breathing: Uses the natural rhythms in our breath to harmonize the different functions in our system including perception, cognition, intellect, physical and memory. “To move forward in life, one must use the mind. To move inward one must drop the mind.” – Sri Sri Ravi Shankar “Effort is the key in the relative. Effortlessness is the key to the absolute.” – Sri Sri Ravi Shankar “You need not be afraid of losing control because you had none to lose.” If you enjoyed today's episode… You'll love hearing from Jeanne Celestine Lakin. Lauren Daigle is the fastest-selling new artist in the Contemporary Christian genre of the last decade. Critically acclaimed for her unique, soulful + soaring vocals, the singer-songwriter is sincere, down-to-earth and has unwavering faith. Today, the 2-time Grammy Award winner shares how her Louisiana-roots cultivated her appreciation for music, the uplifting inspiration behind her lyrics, and how rediscovering her childlike wonder helped her find greater joy in life. Lauren also shares how she previously embraced a period of stillness amidst a whirlwind of success, how it propelled her forward into her next fruitful season + what it could mean for you during the COVID-19 pandemic. SHOW NOTES: "We're on the precipice of something extraordinary. If the whole world is still and experiencing a level of silence, great things come on the other side of those experiences." “I need to learn to love change because it is inevitable.” Lauren grew up in Lafayette, Louisiana surrounded by a culture of music, passion + creativity. Music was a formative way of learning, a way of life + a way to come out of hard, dark times. As a teenager, Lauren was homebound because of the immunocompromising virus cytomegalovirus and music became a way to stay motivated and out of depression. "Being still showed me the future." "My life experiences allow a texture, tone or an emotion to come out in my voice." After high school, Lauren helped build a church on a mission trip to Brazil. While there, she saw how religion can separate others + learned to see people for who they are versus what they believe in. "There are so many things in life that make us more alike than different." Before becoming an award-winning singer, Lauren wanted to pursue a career in doing pro-bono law for human trafficking victims. "If you're in a place in life where you have dreams, things you're hoping or longing for and they don't seem to be in close proximity, surround yourself with as much influence as you can while being diligent and persistent in the work before you." Lauren shares the meaning behind some of the lyrics to "This Girl", "Look Up Child" and "You Say". December 25, 2017: After working herself into exhaustion, and many would say at the height of her career, Lauren took close to a year off of work to "be still". Lauren relates that period to pulling back a slingshot before being propelled forward + fruitful in the next season of her life. As her world tour is on pause because of the coronavirus, Lauren again plans to get lost in the stillness to let her mind, heart + spirit be refreshed + revived. Learn more about Lauren Daigle here. When fires ignite, cancers attack, or tragedies strike, we lean into our community for support, prayers and love. But often when the invisible challenges of depression, bipolar disorder, or mental illness arise, we feel we've got to quietly shoulder the weight alone. September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. And because my family, the families of my co-workers, and the families of innumerable friends have been directly impacted by both mental health challenges and suicide, we wanted to bring to light what too often remains castigated to the dark. Ever feel over-scheduled, over-committed and over-tired in today's world? That we do so much, yet somehow, feel we're not doing enough? Christy Wright, bestselling author of Take Back Your Time and host of The Christy Wright Show, is an expert in cultivating balance, ditching distractions and prioritizing what actually matters. If you or someone you know is seeking a guilt-free tool to cut out what doesn't matter, prioritize the things that do and take back your time and your life, this episode is for you. SHOW NOTES: "Making it" because of struggle: Growing up, how Christy's mom launched a small bakery business was pivotal in teaching character, integrity, persistence and work ethic her formative years. Before becoming a speaker full-time with Ramsey, Christy said "yes" before knowing how and stepped in for Rachel Cruz while she was a project manager.
