Long before Steve Jobs put a device in our hands that lets us mindlessly tap away - giving the illusion of purpose while we wait and a tool to avoid any interaction whatsoever with strangers – I found myself seated alone at a lunch counter awkwardly waiting for my burger, fries and root beer. While watching the cook throw burgers on the grill, I heard behind me the unmistakable and unparalleled voice of Jack Buck belt out: “I didn't know you had such a refined palate.” Jack was a Hall of Fame broadcaster, the voice of the St. Louis Cardinals and the biggest celebrity in our city. He walked over, patted me on the back, asked if the stool next to me was taken and sat down. And so began this unexpected lunch with my hero. Let me explain.

Convicted of felony murder, aggravated assault, and other charges, Williams will serve life with the possibility of parole and an additional five year probation. Williams met Pough under false pretenses, intending to rob him at gunpoint. During the encounter, Williams fatally shot Pough, who was also armed, and returned fire, injuring Williams and causing him to be paralyzed from the waist down. STORY 2:   Gwinnett investigators work led to RICO charges against thieves Gwinnett County police investigator Cpl. Jimmy Wilson was honored with the Partnership of The Year award by the Georgia Retailers Organized Crime Alliance on August 7. Wilson's investigation dismantled a multi-million-dollar criminal operation that was selling stolen goods online. His work led to the recovery of tens of thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise and resulted in RICO charges against the thieves. Wilson's efforts included jail interviews, collaborating with retail investigators, and executing search warrants to recover the stolen items. STORY 3: Vertical construction begins on Sugarloaf Parkway townhome development Parkland Residential has begun vertical construction on Sugarloaf Landing, a 114-unit stacked townhome development at 3440 Sugarloaf Parkway, Lawrenceville. Ramirez was convicted on multiple charges, including felony murder and aggravated assault, after fatally shooting Lopez-Belloso in the back of the head in an SUV on Jimmy Carter Boulevard. Ramirez, who claimed he acted out of a misguided sense of patriotism, initially argued that the shooting was accidental but later admitted intent. He received an additional five years on his life sentence. STORY 5:   Northside Hospital introduces AI-powered colonoscopy  Northside Hospital is enhancing colorectal cancer prevention with new AI technology. The GI Genius intelligent endoscopy module, the first FDA-approved computer-aided polyp detection system, was introduced on August 14. This AI-assisted colonoscopy tool helps detect potentially precancerous polyps more effectively by highlighting them in real-time, acting as a second set of eyes for endoscopists. Available at all five Northside hospitals and six outpatient centers, including Northside Hospital Gwinnett and Duluth, this technology aims to improve early detection and prevent colorectal cancer, which is highly curable when caught early. Regular screenings starting at age 45 are recommended, with earlier testing for those at higher risk. Gio Fraraccio is a Rays fan from the Tampa Bay area. He got started with baseball as a kid, thanks to the 1980s Cardinal broadcast team of Jack Buck and Mike Shannon. After moving to Florida in the early 2000s, Gio became a Rays fan thanks to his kids falling in love with the local team. Gio recently completed his journey to 30 ballparks, wrapping things up at Coors Field earlier this year. We chat about his ballpark journey, an infamous 2016 World Series prediction he made, and how some advice he received as a kid from his Uncle Bob served him well one night in 2011. What it was like to be born as a baseball fan into Whiteyball, a force multiplier for Cardinals history

Whether it was the style of play still expected of the team, the restoration of championship expectations, or the devoted fans that filled the ballpark and informed and inspired generations to come, the 1980s teams of Whitey Herzog were a force multiplier for Cardinals history. They amplified the reach and the devotion of the fans. And Herzog was the exponent, doing more than just double, triple, or even tenfold the fans of the Cardinals for his decade as manager. This podcast built on remembrance and storytelling becomes a tribute. Herzog, a Hall of Fame manager, died this past week in St. Louis. He was 92. His legacy is large, his influence still ubiquitous at the ballpark. And who better to ask about Herzog's lasting impact on the organization and its fan base than a St. Louis native born in 1980 and born as a baseball fan during the era of Ozzie Smith, Willie McGee, and Herzog?  So here is the question presented to St. Louis Post-Dispatch sports columnist Benjamin Hochman: What was it like being born as a baseball fan into Whiteyball? Cue the synthesizer. Hochman talks with Best Podcast in Baseball host and baseball writer Derrick Goold about the teams captured his imagination as young fan and put thousands on the edge of their seats from the moment the leadoff hitter stepped it. Those teams and their gregaroius manager galvanized a city and there are friendships that Hochman still has from his youth that were at least strengthened by a shared love for the Whiteyball-era Cardinals. They played an innovative and charismatic brand of baseball. The modern team could benefit from both. This brand-new BPIB closes with a discussion what to make of the Cardinals offense as they finish their first division series of the season. With former MVP and an engine of production for the team, Paul Goldschmidt, struggling, the Cardinals have needed some innovation to spark the offense. Where can that come from, and do the traits of Whiteyball offer any hints at how to maximize a roster and conjure a contender even while the top producers are struggling? The season is young, but the offensive struggles of the team already feel old. Hall of Fame broadcaster Jack Buck gets the last words with wisdom that applies to 1987 or 2024. The Best Podcast in Baseball, sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and Derrick Goold.

There are only a handful of play by play voices that rise to the very top of their profession; Vin Scully, Jack Buck, Joe Buck, Marty Brennaman, Jon Miller, Vern Lundquist, Pat Summerall, and Jim Nantz. Our guest on this week's episode of The Approach Shot is in that group; Thom Brennman. From broadcasting Cubs games opposite Harry Carey to NFL Games for Fox while always remembering his roots in Cincinnati, Brennaman is (simply put) one of the All-Time greats. In August of 2020, Brennaman was fired from Fox when we was caught on a hot mic making an unfortunate anti-gay slur (which we do not condone) and immediately apologized, and has spent time since the incident consistently apologizing and insisting "that's not who he is", which many folks, including those in the LGBTQ+ community agree with. We spend much of this episode celebrating his great career, and while we don't usually get into the controversial, Thom spends time discussing the incident, as well. It's a very rewarding and intriguing episode of The Approach Shot.
