This episode features a conversation with the legendary Teri Fahrendorf, the long-time brewmaster and founder of Pink Boots Society. She's here for a wide ranging conversation about her career, brewery safety, recipe development, creativity, and forging a path in the beer industry. After a storied career in beer, Fahrendorf recently entered a working retirement. She's helmed breweries, judged competitions around the world, and founded the Pink Boots Society, which she later ran for nearly a decade. She's been a safety advocate, outspoken critic, historian, and sounding board in her more than 30 year career. After countless brew days and then a turn selling raw ingredients, she's focused today on her art, crafting pottery from her studio in the pacific northwest. It's another creative outlet for this one-time computer programmer who forged a career through determination and will when the craft brewing industry was still in its infancy.  She joined the show in early January 2024 to share some stories and insights, more of which can be found on her her blog and website terifahrendorf.com  Fahrendorf isn't leaving beer completely – she says she still plans to judge competitions and stay involved in various other ways, but for the first time since the 1980s bee is not her primary job focus. This seems like a good time for an introspective.  For more Drink Beer, Think Beer check out All About Beer. This Episode is Sponsored By:The Best of Craft Beer AwardsAttention brewers: registration is now open for the 2024 Best of Craft Beer Awards. In 2007, after two decades of professional brewing, Teri Fahrendorf hit the road as an itinerant brewer for an odyssey spanning thousands of miles, dozens of brewery visits and collaborations, and a third of a calendar year. Along the way, she met with other female brewers like her, and they all wanted a way to connect with their colleagues, to find community as women working in a male-dominated industry. Armed with an email list and a pair of cheap pink boots gifted to her before her departure, Teri began laying the groundwork for what would become — you guessed it — the Pink Boots Society, now the beer industry's leading professional advocacy group for women and nonbinary people. Ask any brewer in the industry about a near-miss they've had in the brewhouse and you'll be met with countless stories, some told as anecdotes and some recounted with tentative trepidation, most of all ending with the sentence, 'It could have been so much worse!' But for some, unfortunately, near-misses aren't misses at all: they are fully fledged accidents and incidents, often resulting in life-altering injuries, hospitalisation and debilitation. In the worse case scenarios, even death. Health and safety is paramount in the beer business. Whether you're a distributor operating a folk-lift truck to take a delivery of badly strapped kegs, or a brewer making do with *that* ladder up to the brew kettle (again!), it only takes a moment - a flash - for such an accident to happen. American brewmaster [Teri Fahrendorf](www.terifahrendorf.com) knows this all too well. In 1989, she suffered 3rd degree burns on 11% of her body on account of a badly designed brewhouse and lived to tell the tale. Some of the others, as she recounts in this episode, weren't so fortunate. This is episode is pivotal listening for all involved in brewing and manual handling; a stark reminder that it's better to put procedures and practices in place *now* before it's too late. Adam Spiegel from Sonoma Distilling Company is back with Steve Jaxon, Mark Carpenter and Herlinda Heras today. Adam tells how they started with a 700 square foot distillery, then into a 6000 square foot facility for the last five years, and now they have a new 12,000 square foot facility with a 9000 square foot barrel room. Now he can make more whiskey and better whiskey. He started making beer and wine, then grappa, then whiskey. He explains what grappa is, which is a distilled product made from the pumice, the leftover crushed grapes and other material that is left over after wine is made. They “rehydrate” the material then distill it. The pots distillation method will produce a lower alcohol, more full bodied whiskey, with more viscosity and esters and mouth feel. This is what he wants in a premium product and he will continue to do it. Mark helped start the distilling program at Anchor Brewing and they had licenses to do distilling, wine and beer. Each one had to be a separate operation, but you could have all three. The winery was actually across the street. Adam says that Mark paved the way for him. Anchor was one of the first 40 distilleries in the US. Adam was one of the first 200 American distillers in 2010 and now there are over 1800. Even in Sonoma County there are about 25. He describes their year-round Rye and Bourbon whiskeys and their seasonal cherrywood rye and cherrywood smoked bourbon. He uses the flavored whiskeys to make reduction sauces. Herlinda mentions that Adam was just on the cover of Whiskey International magazine. They have pot stills instead of column stills. Columns stills are good at a single pass, distilling a product over and over again and they are very efficient. Pot stills are a lot more work but produce “...highly viscous, super-ester-driven really full-bodied whiskies.” Adam says this is the California ethos of whiskey production. They use new char American oak. They use some 30 gallon barrels for more rapid aging, which allowed him to sell his product sooner. Mark agrees that the new charred barrels make the whiskey come to life much quicker. In part two, Herlinda Heras welcomes two representatives of the Pink Boots Society, an international organization for women who are involved in any way in the beer business. Mark thinks it’s great that there are women working in breweries now. Sarah Gibbons from the Stone Brewery Restaurant and Taproom in downtown Napa and Katie Green who works at Grav South Brewery in Cotati. The Pink Boots Society was created for women in brewing to have a community. Teri Fahrendorf founded it with Laura Ulrich who is the current president. They are tasting a promotional brew, a Brut IPA, a c0llaboration brew made by some Pink Boots society members. One of the hops is an experimental hops named the Lotus, and another, Mosaic.  (The inventor of the Brut IPA style, Kim Sturdevant, was on Brew Ha Ha last November, here is the episode.) Sarah describes the Stone Brewing building in Napa, which is a historical building and they do a lot to maintain it. They have phenomenal brewers making Napa-specific beer. They also have their big brewery in Escondido, near San Diego.

Part 3 of this weeks chat with Teri Fahrendorf is all about her latest passion, malt. She believes malt will be next big trend and shares her thoughts on where Australia is headed in terms of flavour.  Matt was lucky enough to have the chance to chat with Pink Boots founder, Teri Fahrendorf recently at BrewCon. Teri’s background as a brewer is of considerable experience and the beginnings of the Pink Boots Society is a must hear story. The conversation was so engaging and interesting that Matt and Teri ended up chatting for almost two hours. We’ve broken up the podcast into 3 sections, all available now, so you can listen at your leisure. The first part covers Teri’s background and career, the second, Pink Boots and how that came to be and then Teri’s current position as the first Malt Innovation Centre Manager for Great Western Malting Company in Vancouver, Washington. Enjoy the chat with Terri and let us know your thoughts.

New opening to the show this time through. Let's see how you like it (let us know!) In the pub, we stop by and take about brewery charities and one in particular for Denny's area. We talk about one previous guest's new "kid" rules and the response, before we tackle the big Wicked news of the week and the really insidious piece that virtually no one is talking about behind the scenes. We stop in the brewery to talk the latest malt report from our good friend Teri Fahrendorf and Denny reminices about the good old cow and hog reports of his youth. In the lab, we announce our latest experiment - the IGORs are taking a stab at the Brulosophy gang's Biotransformation ale - aka can you tell a difference between a beer dry hopped at high krausen and one dry hopped in secondary. Of course, we're adding an extra special twist to the whole thing because we're required to by law. Twist one, testing two different strains with some IGORs pulling out Wyeast 1318 and some pulling Wyeast 1056. Twist two - we're going to have some visually blind trials vs visual trials. Woo... Then in the Lounge, Denny talks to Jessica Davis of the Bruery about what it means to do QA work for a brewery with as many on going projects as they have. It's seriously interesting to learn what it means to work in the beer world and be tasked with keeping an eye on things Finally we tackle questions we can answer. Drop a quick tip on ya and explore just why Drew wants to subject one of his chihuahuas to dangerous acrobatics. Second half of the Q&A episode is now ready for your listening and "learning" pleasure! But first, before we dive into your questions, we're back with your feedback from the first Q&A episode and some Barley Crop Reports that we've cribbed from our friend Teri Fahrendorf and Denny reports on his eggs, because they're expensive! Then we grabbed a chance to talk with multiple (no, really, multiple) award-winning homebrewer Joe Formanek. Normally we'd subject Joe to the whole twenty questions routine because seriously the man's impressive, but you can go read his profile in Homebrew All-Stars until we get back to that. Why the wait? Because Joe has an interesting new brewing product that he's helping spread the word on - Brewtan B. What is Brewtan B? Well, listen to the episode and find out. Speaking of finding out - we're happy to announce our next experiment - this one is completely focused on figuring out if Brewtan B does what it says on the tin. (And in that spirit we're giving our IGORs some time to have some fun as well) Then we get into your questions. For convenience's sake we've divided the questions into general topic categories. This episode we tackle Packaging and Philosophy Questions. We even have more "live" callers! Episode Links: BrewTan B - http://www.natural-specialities.com/PDF/Data-sheets/Brewtan%20B%20%20-%2... Teri Fahrendorf had been brewing professionally for 19 years when she went on a road trip. She visited 71 breweries, brewed at 38 of them, and blogged the whole way. Throughout the trip, she did meet a few other women working in craft beer. They always asked whether there were others. So they started the […] The post MicroBrewr 053: Pink Boots Society empowers women in beer appeared first on MicroBrewr.
