Year In Beer 2024: New South Wales

The Crafty Pint Podcast

Our final podcast episode before Christmas touches down in New South Wales for a look back at the Year In Beer there in the company of a trio of guests. First up we have Nemesia Dale-Cully – better known as Meesh to most. She's enjoyed a number of roles in the local beer world, first in Adelaide before moving from running Shapeshifter's venue to take over the hospitality side of things at Wildflower, and is also involved in Pink Boots Society Australia.Joining her for a chat with Will and James is another of our Sydney-based writers. We brought Benny onto the show as guest host a few weeks ago, and now it's a chance to meet Jason Treuen. As well as writing for The Crafty Pint, he's part of the team that brought the Inner West Ale Trail to life and a keen homebrewer. From there, we head north to chat to Nick McDonald, co-founder of Bucketty's Brewing, one of the many breweries that call the Northern Beaches home and as bluntly honest a guest as we've had on the show to date. Across the two conversations, we cover everything from the challenges of running small breweries in 2024 and renewed interest in beer tourism to the importance of community and the theatre of pouring beer. We also discuss trends, the standout breweries, beers and events of the past 12 months, and Jason's banana hefeweizen IPA...At the start of the show, given it's in our standard Thursday slot, we also go over the news of the previous week, with a focus on the IBA's announcement that there will be no BrewCon or Indies awards in 2025 as well as WA's one-man Evil Mega Corp.Start of guest segments: 10:42 – Jason Treuen & Nemesia Dale-Cully 39:42 – Nick McDonald The Crafty Pint's 2024 Year In Beer series is proudly presented by Mogwai Labs, leaders in liquid yeast solutions. In Episode 015 of The Crafty Pint Podcast we head overseas for the first time. Our destination is a tiny brewery most people won't have heard of, where we're joined by a guest with whom many will be very familiar. The tiny brewery is Shortjaw Brewing, located in Westport: a town on the sparsely populated west coast of New Zealand's South Island. The guest is the man who, along with his partner Emma, decided to take over the site of a 30-year-old, twice-liquidated brewery during the early period of the COVID pandemic and bring it back to life. Luke Robertson is far better known in beer circles – at least outside Westport and surrounds – from his time in Australia. This is mainly due to Ale of a Time, the blog that spawned a podcast of the same name, both of them home to sharp, witty and occasionally caustic observations of, and commentary on, the wide world of beer. That was just one of many roles in the Australian beer world for Luke, who helped deliver major events such as Good Beer Week and BrewCon for the Independent Brewers Association, while writing – mostly on beer – for high profile publications not just in his adopted home but overseas, notably for Good Beer Hunting. Thirty months on from pouring the first Shortjaw beer for guests, he joined us to reflect on his change of direction – or putting his money where his mouth is, as he puts it: how he's approached building a customer base for a regional brewery in one of the most remote parts of the planet, his fondness for creating beers that represent the place in which they're brewed, and some of the highs and lows that come with launching a brewery in the toughest climate for beer in decades. The chat with Luke starts at 11:05. Prior to that, we interrupt Will's holiday in Bali to go behind the scenes of his deep dive article into the experiences of working at beer's sinking ships. Over a period of months, he spoke to former employees at a number of businesses across Australia that have been through administration, ceased operating, or changed hands over the past couple of years, and the picture they paint is far from pretty. We also discuss the reaction to the article since its publication on Monday, with comments received from outside Australia and beyond the beer world too. And this week as we prepare for BrewCon we have a special bonus episode of Beer is a Conversation as we meet Ed Jamison, Head of Marketing, for Fermentum Craft Beer Company and Richard Crowe, Head of Supply Chain, also for Fermentum. Regular readers of our news service will have been following the gradual restructure and rationalisation of Lion's craft business that has seen breweries such as Tiny Mountain in Townsville and, more recently, Two Birds in Melbourne close and Bevy Brewing in Perth rebranded as a Little Creatures brewpub. It turns out that was all paving the way for a more significant restructure that sees all of the Lion craft businesses come the badge of Fermentum, the Stone and Wood parent company that Lion acquired in September 2021 and has now been renamed Fermentum Craft Beer Company..  With the restructure bringing OG craft brewery Little Creatures under the Fermentum badge and all of the other changes that have been taking place in the Lion craft portfolio, I was interested to hear from Ed and Rich, two of the three people tasked with leading Lion's craft division, about what it means for Lion, for beer drinkers and for beer in general. I have had many questions since the acquisition of one of Australia's most significant independent craft breweries and how it would come to be integrated into the broader Lion business. It was a long period of restructure and now is the time to ask many of them. As you'll hear, It's a robust conversation and I get to ask those questions. I genuinely appreciate Ed and Richard's willingness to engage and answer them. This episode of Beer is a Conversation is presented by HPA. Australia's leading hop grower offers a huge range of Aussie, international and innovative hop products that can help breweries of all sizes become more efficient, more sustainable, and more profitable. Just about everywhere we go, we hear opinions on the IBA. How it's doing, what it should be doing, what it shouldn't be doing and what it should be doing differently.  We have opined on this ourselves. But we also hear a lot about why breweries consider it's not worth joining or why they are leaving, and this often involves suggestions that the association isn't doing enough in some areas, or is focusing on the wrong areas. Often there's little understanding of the enormity of the association's task just in dealing with governments at all levels on issues that are critical to the daily operation of every brewery, whether a member of the association or not.  While we were in Canberra for the Hottest 100 Countdown, we took the opportunity to sit down with Richard and Kylie to try to understand what the IBA does, outside of its most visible work on the Indie Seal, the Indies and BrewCon just to give listeners an understanding of why having an association that represents the interests of brewers is so important. Your premium brewing partner and proud sponsors of Brews News. We thank Rallings Labels and Stickers for sponsoring this podcast. Brewers, if you are still applying self-adhesive labels to your bottles and cans, and believe that this is a sustainable solution for your packaging needs, you may want to call Rallings Labels, Stickers and Packaging and discuss your options with them. The team at Rallings will walk you through the various options available to you, that are more sustainable than applying self-adhesive labels which don’t help the environment at all. Whilst they do produce self-adhesive labels for many breweries, there is a much better way to ensure that your carbon footprint is lower than what you are currently doing by utilising pre-sleeved cans. Thanks to Bintani we were able to take Radio Brews News to BrewCon and capture a little of what was on offer to those who were lucky enough to get to Australian craft brewing's annual conference and trade show. In this episode we chat with Ruth Leary from Fermentis. Ruth holds a Bachelor of Science degree in food science from Otago University and also an IBD Diploma in Brewing. Ruth studied fermentation science as a post grad and fell in love with beer when she started at Lion Brewery in New Zealand in 2002. First in the technical team and then as a yeast propagator. She is now the Regional Sales Manager for Fermentis. We chat about her career starting at Lion in 2002 and her experiences in the beer industry joining a very male dominated business in the early 2000s. Then we take a look at yeast and learn a little about what's happening in yeast development in a hazy beer world. BrewCon 2020 will take place on September 21 and 22 next year. Enjoy the conversation. In this episode we chat with Kegstar's Kevin Dinn and Andrew Higginbotham. There has been a lot of talk about smart kegs over the last few years - kegs that are able to report back to base about where they are, their temperature, and even whether they are full or empty. Despite all of that talk, nothing has yet hit the market. But with Kegstar announcing it is ready to roll out scan free keg tracking, we use this opportunity to catch up with Kegstar's Chief Technology Officer and learn about what they're doing and what's possible, and what's likely in the smart keg space. While we're chatting with Kegstar, we also catch up with General Manager Andrew Higginbotham to update the chat we had with him at GABS earlier this year about demand for smaller kegs post 1 July. If you're in the business of moving beer, this is an interesting conversation about what's new in the keg space. BrewCon 2020 will take place on September 21 and 22 next year. Enjoy the conversation. Last week saw Good Beer Week celebrated in Melbourne, and the Cryer Malt trade hub at BeerDeluxe was once again a focus for the brewing industry with a number of important trade discussions taking place. Among the panels was an update from the Independent Brewers Association. Apart from being a general update from the IBA to its members, this panel stood out because of some of the key data that was revealed. It has always been hard to quantify the size and growth of the craft and independent beer industry but the IBA has pulled together some meaningful data that gives us a clearer picture of where the craft industry sits in Australia. This week on Beer is a Conversation we catch up with IBA Chair, Jamie Cook, to dig a little deeper into the numbers A PowerPoint presentation was prepared for the presentation and you can download it here.
