It's so easy to get caught up in contention, even when we're not really trying to fight. Paul Rosenberg has great advice on how fighting over words is medieval and keeps us from understanding one another. It's an unpleasant memory but 4 years ago we were pushed into a situation where millions of Americans lost their livelihoods over a mandated jab. John Tamny reminds us that we must never forget their excuses for lockdowns. Article of the Day: It should be clear by now that the GOP isn't going to save us. In this episode seminary professor Dr. Soong-Chan Rah reiterates that the Trump administration's dismantling of USAID should serve as a serious wake up call to American Evangelical Christians because now Christian relief agencies will no longer receive gifts in kind of grain from the federal government. However, if they continue to celebrate USAID's demise, they are telling us that they really aren't "evangelicals," who take the Bible and Jesus quite seriously.

Despite major progress in civil rights, black economic uplift, and even electing a black President, the question of race continues to be an ongoing major issue in the United States. There are continuing significant racial disparities between races. A black underclass still remains in America. And political and cultural debates around race continue to be major flashpoints. This includes within the evangelical church, where debates over race have become very intense. Joining me to discuss the ongoing question of race is Robert "Bob" Woodson, Sr. He is one of American's foremost civil rights leaders and experts on alleviating poverty. He's been an advisor to Presidents, a MacArthur Genius Grant Award winner, and recipient of numerous other awards. He's the founder of the Woodson Center and editor of the new book A Pathway to American Renewal. What actually is the state of racial inclusion in America? Where has progress been made, and where does it still remain? How many of the problems around race today are actually class related? How should American evangelicals think about the question of race and how should they seek to engage on it? What are some of the most encouraging initiatives and leaders that he sees in the country today? Ken welcomes historian, author, and media commentator Martyn Whittock from his home across the Pond just outside London. Martyn read Ken's Substack series on Biblical Authority and reached out with some comments. It prompted this lively conversation - and led to another focus: Martyn's article recently published in the UK - How US Evangelicals Could Affect the Entire World. Whittock, a licensed minister in the Church of England, is a self-described “Evangelical.” For years, he has been a student of American Evangelicalism. He gives us a fascinating insight into the differences between our two countries: in America - the preponderance of MAGA Evangelicals, and in Britain - a very different sort of evangelical. Martyn expresses his deep concern over the prospect of a second term for the 45th President not only for the USA. He believes a second Trump Presidency will have an egregious adverse effect on Europe and the entire world. He explains this in considerable detail. Then, Ken asks Martyn about two recent appearances on British television as a history specialist. In the first, Martyn comments on the recent terror attack in Moscow that killed over one hundred in a large theater. In the second, he is asked about the Princess of Wales and the conspiracy theories that surrounded her hospital stay and absence from public life. You can see those clips by clicking on the links. First things first... So, I have changed the picture that fronts the podcast. I also have changed the category from "Christianity" to "Philosophy." Both changes seem to fit more of where the podcast is and where I want it to be. Me standing next to one of the two Soren Kierkegaard statues in Copenhagen embodies my goal of staying close to his legacy and his writings. Christ at the center. Philosophy means "Lover of Wisdom" and how Christianity has lost its wisdom to a degree these days in an exchange for a bowl of political lentils/stew like Esau is disheartening. We have sold our birthright to fill our carnal hunger for power and other nefarious appetites (revenge, etc). As an aside, I was struggling in the episode to remember what "Philo" meant in the Greek. It means love. Sophia means wisdom. This episode continues to build on the Upbuilding Discourse on the Apostle Paul's "Thorn in the Flesh." An excruciating and chronic pain that Paul had in his body. In looking at the Greek word translated as "thorn"actually means "stake" and it is an instrument designed for torture. Chronic pain will splinter our worldly dreams of personal peace and prosperity, what Francis Schaeffer called the two idols of American Evangelicals. The Cross tells us that God himself took the stake on our behalf. God can use our worldly brokenness (the withered splendor of fulfillment) to bring a greenwood and eternal hope to us and others. Where do we place our hope?

Tim Alberta is not only an excellent writer, he's also a practicing Christian and the son of an Evangelical pastor. So it's no wonder his recent book THE KINGDOM, THE POWER AND THE GLORY struck such a nerve as it "paints an expansive and profoundly troubling portrait of the American evangelical movement."   It would mean so much if you could leave us a review: https://ratethispodcast.com/goodfaithpolitics    We're joined by Tim Alberta upon the publication of his new book, The Kingdom, The Power and the Glory: American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism. After starting out with some fun banter about Tim's beloved Detroit Lions and veering off into kids' names, we delve into weighty topics such as whether Tim still considers himself an #evangelical - more specifically, if there are aspects of his faith he's begun to question. Much of this conversation is about the new book: "The main thing is no longer the main thing" for so many megachurch pastors; Donald Trump is "a creation of the culture gone crazy" (especially in the American Evangelical church); whether hucksters like Trump and Paula White, when they're behind closed doors, laugh at all their "suckers" that buy into their various schemes; who Tim thinks is the audience for THE KINGDOM, THE POWER, AND THE GLORY - and who he hopes the audience is; and we get to hear some input from Charles Mingus the 3rd!   Tim Alberta is a staff writer for The Atlantic and the former chief political correspondent for Politico, and has written for dozens of other publications, including the Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, and Vanity Fair. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller American Carnage: On the Front Lines of the Republican Civil War and the Rise of President Trump and the newly released The Kingdom, The Power and the Glory. He co-moderated the final Democratic presidential debate of 2019 and frequently appears as a commentator on television programs in the United States and around the world. In his 1887 polemic, On the Genealogy of Morality, Nietzsche suggested that the idea of good and evil, of morality itself, might have been born by slaves. Candida Moss, who holds the Edward Cadbury Chair of Theology at the University of Birmingham, riffs off this Nietzchean idea by suggesting that enslaved Christians, as well as artisans and women, might have actually written (or, at least, transcribed) the Bible. This precariat of antiquity were, Moss argues in her new God's Ghostwriters, not much different to the Amazon delivery men and Uber drivers who now make up the labor force of our digital economy. It's an intriguing argument especially, as Moss gleefully acknowledges, because it will offend many American evangelicals who assume that the Bible was written by white men like Luke, Peter, Mark, Paul, John and Ringo. Happy Easter everyone. Enjoy your Cadbury chocolate eggs and the Resurrection/Passover. Candida Moss is Edward Cadbury Chair of Theology at the University of Birmingham, prior to which she taught for almost a decade at the University of Notre Dame. We're joined by Tim Alberta upon the publication of his new book, The Kingdom, The Power and the Glory: American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism. And as listeners will quickly learn, Tim is a big time Detroit Lions fan.   Talkin' Politics & Religion Without Killin' Each Other is part of The Democracy Group, a network of podcasts that examines what's broken in our democracy and how we can work together to fix it.   Please support our wonderful sponsor Meza Wealth Management: https://www.mezawealth.com/   We're also pleased to give a shoutout to our friends at a great new podcast: https://leftylooseyrightytighty.podbean.com   And you can find Corey on all the socials @coreysnathan such as www.threads.net/@coreysnathan.   www.bytimalberta.com/   www.amazon.com/Kingdom-Power-Glory-Evangelicals-Extremism/dp/006322688X   www.theatlantic.com/author/tim-alberta/

He is an ordained Baptist minister, but he left the Southern Baptist Convention over the evangelical movement's embrace of Donald Trump for president, Among other factors. It's Tuesday, June 13th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus.  (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Christian persecution in Tajikistan Persecution against Christian churches is on the rise in Tajikistan.   In May 2022, Sulaymon Davlatzoda, a Tajikistan senior state religious affairs official, told Protestant church leaders that the government would no longer register new churches. Plus, anyone under 18 years of age is prohibited from practicing the Christian faith or taking part in church activities.  America's burdensome debt Does the U.S. government have a big debt problem? In the last 12 months, President Biden has racked up another $2.1 trillion in federal debt. That's up from a $438 billion deficit in 2015 when Barack Obama was president which is a 5-fold increase.   And that's up from a deficit of $22 billion back in the year 1997, when Bill Clinton was president, representing a 120-fold increase.  Regardless of what modern economists say, the wisdom of God in the book of Proverbs reminds us that “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.” (Proverbs 22:7) Indictment of Trump didn't decrease popularity The present controversies do not appear to be hampering Donald Trump in the Republican race for the presidential nomination. Real Clear Politics has the former president at 53.6% up from 44% back in March.  That's a 31.8% lead ahead of Ron DeSantis. And Joe Biden and Donald Trump are neck and neck on the un-favorability rating — both at 55%. Rick Warren objecting to Baptists cutting ties over women pastors The Christian Post reported on Rick Warren's campaign to allow for women pastors in the Southern Baptist Church. Warren's Saddleback church is appealing the Southern Baptist Convention's decision to cut ties with the church over the issue. Christianity Today claims that 73% of American Evangelicals are okay with women preaching in a Sunday service.  And a recent survey conducted by Lifeway Research found that 55% of Evangelical pastors are okay with women serving as a senior pastor in a church. And the trend continues. Research conducted in 2016 found 21% of professional clergy in the US were women, up from 2.3% in 1960. 57% of Protestant churches prepared for active shooter A Lifeway survey discovered that 57% of American Protestant churches have prepared for an active shooter incident on church premises. And 54% claim to have armed church members as part of the plan. That's up from 45% claiming to have armed church members attending services back in 2019.   However, 21% of  Protestant churches do not allow firearms on church property at all. The survey did not ask if the church was ready for spiritual attacks.  Ephesians 6:13 says, “Take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” And 1 John 4:4 reminds God's people that “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” 100 African leaders to U.S.: Respect our Biblical values Increasingly, African nations are the target of the Western woke, pro-abortion, and anti-family agenda through U.S. foreign assistance programs.   Representing Bethany Christian Services, American Red Cross, Oxfam, International Rescue Committee, Islamic Relief, Catholic Relief Services, Care USA, Save the Children, and World Vision, an organization called Interaction.org lobbies the federal government for diverting funds towards these types of programs. InterAction explicitly promotes a universal “right” to abortion and increased funding for “women's rights and feminist organizations.” Last week, in light of these Western commitments, more than 100 African parliamentarians and religious leaders from 15 countries sent a letter to the U.S. Senate and House leadership, requesting that Africa's pro-life and pro-family values be respected.   There was special concern about President Biden's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief funding. The U.S. spends $40-$50 billion per year in foreign aid. Fox News trying to censor Tucker Carlson on Twitter And finally, will Twitter replace Fox News as a go-to for conservative Americans?   Tucker Carlson has topped 115 million Twitter streamings or downloads for his first commentary on Twitter. His second commentary, issued on June 8th, is pushing 55 million. After booting Carlson from their Fox News prime time programming, the self-styled conservative news organization experienced a prime time ratings drop of 37%, according to Deadline.com. Fox News is registering at 1.42 million views now -- down from 3 million when Tucker Carlson was on his game.   Axios reports that Fox News has responded to Carlson's Twitter activity with a cease and desist letter. Carlson's lawyers have responded with this statement: “Doubling down on the most catastrophic programming decision in the history of the cable news industry, Fox is now demanding that Tucker Carlson be silent until after the 2024 election. Tucker will not be silenced by anyone. ... He is a singularly important voice on matters of public interest in our country, and will remain so." Print story CA eager to call parents “abusive” who don't affirm transgender kids California AB 957, now before the State assembly, would amend the code to give the state the authority to remove children from their homes if their parents refuse to “affirm their gender,” reports LifeSiteNews.  Those parents would be categorized as “abusive.” It would also require schools, churches and other organizations to follow suit or face repercussions for 'impacting the health, safety and welfare of [a] child.' Nicole Pearson, founder of the Facts Law Truth Justice law firm, told the Daily Signal: “This is a horrifying bill for children, and for parents and guardians not just in California, but across the country. We had a ton of questions for Kevin Singer, President of Neighborly Faith which conducts research and organizes events “introducing Christians to neighbors of every faith.” For example, considering Kevin has Jewish relatives, were there ever discussions about Jewish people's cultural allergy to proselytization and ways that American Evangelicals - perhaps unknowingly - cross that line? How does Neighborly Faith go about "train(ing) tomorrow's leaders to be faithful and flourish in an increasingly diverse world” and “knowing and serving all of our neighbors.” Is it an Evangelical bait and switch? Yaqeen Institute founder Imam Omar Suleiman said at one of NF's events, “I was and am fine with his (SBC President JD Greear) vision of the hereafter not having space for me, so long as it doesn't become an obstacle to me having space in the here and now.” Is that part of the point of the work Neighborly Faith does? We also discussed where folks that are part of GenZ find meaning as individuals and within communities compared to previous generations?   Kevin was raised at the intersection of his mother's Evangelical faith and his father's Reform Jewish roots. He earned graduate degrees in Theology from Wheaton College and Higher Ed from NC State. Kevin has extensive teaching and leadership experience in churches, campus ministries, and colleges. He planted two churches with the North American Mission Board (2009-14) and is also head of Media Relations and PR at Springtide Research Institute. First, the Erre boys discuss the year in review and then Tim brings in a few Strange Stories about a possible Vampire buried beneath the Notre Dame Cathedral and a new study that determines how American Evangelicals picture the face of God. 0:00 - Errecane 4:50 - Strange Stories 13:30 - Women as Elders As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. Life Matters
295: The Further Down The Ballot, The Greater Your Voting Power

Life Matters

Every Life Matters episode makes itself applicable to the immediacy of the news and the times, but simultaneously, Mr. Johnston explains the times in their context.  He underscores the evergreen and important principles that are needed in these times.  This episode is the penultimate episode leading up to November elections, 2022. Brian underscores the many misunderstandings that pro-life individuals have come to, and how those misunderstandings, once clarified and then acted on, could have a dramatic impact on the nation.  But this happens only through having a dramatic impact on one's immediate community, their county, and their state. This is done through the lawmakers which they elect, and which represent each of those jurisdictions.  The recent Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court decision, which nullified the Roe v. Wade decision, explicitly stated this principle. The authority to make abortion laws lies with each American citizen, and is done through their elected representatives. All of these down-ballot jurisdictions are representative of the federal representative form of government which we have inherited in the United States. On the national level, that representative government is manifest through the two houses of Congress. Most reportage of the moment rightly focuses in this election on the critical decisions in balance within the United States House of Representatives  and the United States Senate. These are essential political battles.  But without understanding the principles employed there, and how these representatives are hired at each election, the lack of clarity in civics has brought great harm to the pro-life movement. Many efforts made by earnest pro-life individuals don't actually accomplish a change in the laws. Activity is not the same as accomplishment.  This specific episode equips Christians of all backgrounds and denominations and even non-Christians in the pro-life movement, with an understanding of appropriate civic actions.  These election activities are not arbitrary.  They lead to legal accomplishment by lawmakers on behalf of the vulnerable innocent child and of all vulnerable innocent human lives. Brian quotes from Dr. Dobson's, “Family Talk” program of a previous week.  In it, Dr. Dobson bemoans the fact that in presidential elections, 25 million Evangelicals don't even register to vote nationwide. But it gets worse. In every general election, 65 million Evangelical voters will admit they will vote but they will not vote down the ballot and will leave blank whole sections of their ballot in what is known as down ballot races. The 65 million American Evangelicals are disproportionately very, very pro-life. Amazingly, the power of their vote is disproportionately more powerful in down ballot races.  This power is because in a state wide race - for example California - typically 4 to 8,000,000 ballots can be cast (sometimes more!)  The difference of say 50 votes from one particular church in Pomona, California is mathematically a drop in a very, very large ocean.  But as you descend down the ballot, (just as the properties of a nitrogen gas bubble expand the further down you descend), the value in properties of that ballot expand exponentially.  California has 52 congressional districts - your vote is 52 times more impactful for your Congressional candidate than it is for a state-wide candidate.  But continue down into the depths of civics.  As you go down to the very local level, those 50 votes are exponentially huge in the city of Pomona and further down in the separately segregated geographic portion of Pomona that's known as a school district.  But go further. Go down to District 5 of the school district board. That church in Pomona is in that district. Those 50 votes are now absolutely dispositive. They will help determine the disposition of that election and many school board candidates are elected by much, much smaller margins than 50 votes  That same ballot being cast by you has exponentially more power in speaking to your representatives as the Dobbs vs. Jackson decision directed.  Your voice is exponentially more powerful in your Congressional district and down to your very local community than it is state wide.  So this is the reason in federal and state elections that it is critically important to work with a comprehensive pro-life team in civics. National Right to Life is the team of diverse pro-lifer's. National Right Life PAC and its state affiliate pacs, allow your vote to have a great power on the state and federal level.  Your efforts with your local pro-life chapter has incredible power - expansive nitrogen bubble expansion - at the great depths of your local school board. Your same vote has devastating impact in the fight to keep abortion advocates out of your local schools  (I, of course, speak metaphorically and urge you to consider these things deeply and as you ascend make sure you decompress, taking this knowledge with you.  When you reach the surface please be natural about it. Go out and vote and vote with your local pro-life community.) California Prolife and many of the affiliates of National Right to Life Committee provide an important voter information tool. Historically, these were paper voter guides. But with the advancement in technology and the vast numbers of local candidates, the new vote.californiaprolife.org allows any citizen in the state of California to download their mailing address where they receive their ballot and every pro-life candidate and issue on their local precinct ballot is presented.  When pro-lifers vote pro-life, down the entire ballot, they change their communities, they change their counties, they change their members of Congress, they change their states.  Again, this tool is available at the California Prolife website www.californiaprolife.org, at the specific url Vote.californiaprolife.org, and national information directing you to each and every state affiliate is available at nrlc.org.
