How many stories have you read about holiday menu planning? This year, let's focus on holiday mental health planning. While many people look forward to celebrating with friends, family, and loved ones, the holiday season can also bring stress. Take time to assess your commitments to yourself and others, and remember that it's okay not to try to please everyone. Be flexible with your plans. Consider taking breaks from social media and the news, resting, reflecting on the past year, trying something new, and don't forget to look around and appreciate the moment. Dr. Loren M. The holidays are supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, but for stepmoms? Let's be real—it's often a mix of logistical nightmares, emotional overload, and a whole lot of deep breathing. In this episode, Alicia is tackling the holiday stressors stepmoms face, straight from her Instagram broadcast channel: Stepmom Support. From co-parenting chaos to feeling like an outsider at family gatherings, we're diving into the real struggles—and how to navigate them without losing your mind (or your holiday spirit). Here's what we're covering:New Schedules, New Stress:Many stepmoms are adjusting to new schedules in new places. Whether you've moved to another state or your partner's custody schedule has shifted, trying to figure out how to make the holidays work feels like a game of Tetris no one asked to play. The Planning Problem:The holidays fly by, and stepmoms often feel like they're carrying the mental load of making it all happen. Add in the last-minute chaos from partners or co-parents who don't plan ahead, and it's no wonder so many stepmoms feel stuck trying to fit everything into an impossibly tight schedule. The Flexibility Battle:One of the biggest complaints Alicia hears? Co-parents who are unaccommodating with their time but expect stepmoms to bend over backward for theirs. And when there's an “older sibling who acts like a second mom,” the drama multiplies. Sound familiar? The Gift-Giving Comparison Game:Whether it's a competition with the ex or the kids' expectations, many stepmoms struggle with feeling like their gifts won't measure up. Alicia shares why this mindset happens and how to reframe the holiday gift game.Sibling Tensions and Partner Inaction:A stressor Alicia hears about often: having stepkids and biological kids together during the holidays when they don't get along. Worse? A partner who doesn't step up to address the tension or hurtful behavior. We'll talk about advocating for your kids, setting boundaries, and protecting your peace. The Outsider Effect with In-Laws:Many stepmoms feel like their partner's family still wishes for the “old” family dynamic, making holidays awkward or outright painful. If your in-laws treat you like a placeholder, you're not alone—and we'll talk about how to navigate those moments with grace and boundaries.Resources mentioned:Stepmom Support Broadcast ChannelFree Resource: 10 Tips to Get Through the HolidaysPodcast episode: How Your Expectations Set You Up For FailurePodcast episode: Caught in the Middle: The Truth About Dad Guilt In StepfamiliesPodcast episode: Holiday Survival Guide for Stepmoms: Self-Care Strategies That Actually WorkWant a specific topic covered? As we approach the end of the year, the Building Better Developers podcast presents a special Thanksgiving edition focused on holiday planning and reflection. Hosts Rob Broadhead and Michael Meloche share insights into their personal and professional journeys this year, offering practical tips on balancing work, rest, and goal-setting during the holiday season. Whether navigating challenges or celebrating wins, this episode inspires listeners to use this reflective time to recharge and prepare for a successful 2025. The Challenges and Opportunities of 2024: A Holiday Planning and Reflection Overview Rob Broadhead shared his candid experiences from a year that brought its share of business challenges. The road has been rocky, from promising projects losing momentum due to market uncertainty to unforeseen timing issues. However, Rob emphasized the silver lining: growth. Despite the hurdles, he has honed his skills and emerged as a better developer, setting an example for embracing challenges as opportunities for learning. Michael Meloche echoed similar sentiments. Rebranding his company, Envision QA, was a bright spot in his year, but family health issues reminded him of life's unpredictable challenges. Michael's reflections underscored the importance of resilience, flexibility, and the need to appreciate personal and professional achievements amidst difficulties. Making Time for Holiday Planning and Reflection The Thanksgiving season offers a natural pause to reflect on the year's accomplishments and setbacks. Rob and Michael encouraged listeners to engage in a year-end retrospective. Consider what went well, what didn't, and what goals remain unfinished. This practice highlights areas for improvement and sets the stage for a focused and productive new year. For those whose workloads slow during the holidays, it's an ideal time to tackle “technical debt” or projects that often fall by the wayside. Whether cleaning up digital clutter, exploring a new tool, or setting the foundation for a creative project like writing a book or launching a podcast, these quieter moments can lay the groundwork for future success. Balancing Productivity and Rest One of the key takeaways from this episode was the importance of balance. Rob shared his strategy of taking a few weeks off during the holidays but dedicating a few hours each morning to focused work. This approach allows for relaxation and productivity, ensuring a refreshed start to the new year. Michael emphasized the need to prioritize family and personal time during this season. Whether celebrating Thanksgiving and a birthday or simply enjoying time with loved ones, the holidays are a time to reconnect and recharge. For those feeling overwhelmed, he advised trimming non-essential tasks from your to-do list and focusing on what truly matters. Rediscovering Joy and Exploration Beyond work and family obligations, the podcast encouraged listeners to indulge in hobbies or explore new interests. Whether taking a painting class, walking through a festive downtown, or simply curling up with a book, these activities can rejuvenate the mind and spirit. If you've neglected a passion or hobby, now is the time to revisit it. And for those without a clear outlet, consider trying something new—creative, physical, or social. The idea is to step out of your usual routine and rediscover what brings you joy. Setting the Stage for 2025: Holiday Planning and Reflection in Action As the year draws closer, Rob and Michael urged listeners to start thinking about the year ahead. What goals do you want to set? What new skills or projects will you tackle? The end of the year isn't just about wrapping up loose ends—it's about laying the foundation for success in the coming year. Join the Conversation Rob and Michael concluded by inviting you to share holiday rituals or year-end strategies. Whether it's a tradition, a productivity hack, or a reflection on the past year, the podcast welcomes your input. You can connect with them via email, the Building Better Developers website, or their social media channels. This Thanksgiving, take a cue from Rob and Michael: Reflect, recharge, and prepare. Whether focusing on personal growth, family time, or setting professional goals, this season is the perfect opportunity to build a better you. And as always, remember to enjoy the journey—because better developers build better lives. The holidays can be a magical time, but for many busy moms, they bring stress, overwhelm, and exhaustion. In Episode 211 of The Secrets of Supermom Show, Lori Oberbroeckling, mom of four, corporate leader, and author of Secrets of Supermom: How Extraordinary Moms Succeed at Work and Home—and How You Can Too, shares three simple steps to reduce holiday stress and bring back the joy.Step 1: Identify Your Shoulds and Have-TosLori suggests starting with a “Holiday Yes List” and a “Holiday No List.” Focus on activities that bring joy and eliminate those that feel like obligations or drain your energy. By identifying what excites you and letting go of what doesn't, you can reclaim the magic of the season.Step 2: Plan Your PrioritiesTo ensure your favorite traditions happen, schedule them on your calendar. Whether it's decorating the tree, baking cookies, or attending a festive event, intentional planning ensures your most meaningful activities take center stage. For tasks on your “No List,” consider delegating, outsourcing, or skipping them entirely.Step 3: Protect Your EnergyThe holiday season can be demanding, so prioritize habits that keep you energized. Schedule time for self-care, whether it's getting enough rest, staying active, or enjoying quiet moments to recharge. Eliminating energy drains and focusing on energy boosts will help you stay present and joyful.By following these steps, you can transform the holidays into a season of joy, connection, and magic. For the show notes and all the links mentioned in today's episode, head to secretsofsupermom.com/211.Stay connected!Join us in The Supermom Society! Hello, hi! Are you feeling overwhelmed by all the expectations of the holiday season? In this episode, we're tackling the “holiday guilt” that so many moms and women feel this time of year—guilt about not doing enough, spending too much, or skipping traditions. Together, we'll explore how to tell the difference between decisions you need to let go of and opportunities to align with what truly matters. By the end of this episode, we'll have completed an exercise to help you map out a holiday season that feels joyful, intentional, and guilt-free.   Episode Summary Check in: I share that while everything is going well on paper, I've been struggling with a flare-up of my anxiety. My empathy has been in overdrive with a lot of things I'm witnessing online or in the news. I'm trying to remember that I've learned a lot over the last 5 years managing my health and wellness, but that doesn't mean that I'm “cured” or that I'll never struggle Today's episode is about normalinzing guilt and allowing guilt to run the show to meet the needs of others over the holiday season. We accept our guild over the holiday because it's kind of motivating! It gets us doing some things that maybe feel like a lot of extra for OR it helps us make decisions, and the holidays are a time when decisions are in overdrive and add to our exhaustion. I discuss a few areas of the holidays where you might be experiencing guilt:  Holiday Planning and preparation Gifts Family and Community events and expectations Parenting and Kids Holiday Burnout   Medium Effort Reflect on what always matters to you all year round and ask yourself “does that change for the holidays?” Ask yourself, “what will make me feel aligned with my values this holiday instead of managing guilt and making sure I'm productive?” Make a list of all the things that might make you feel guilty this holiday season, and sort them into two categories: 1. Move on (this is just a decision, and not specific to your values) and 2. Show Up (something is meaningful for you and should be prioritized) Mindful Fun: Make a Holiday Map On your own or with your spouse/kids/friends/ write out three priorities for your holiday (these will come from the show up column) Around these priorities list any and all activities that you might do that you can either plan for or decide if the opportunity comes up you will pursue.  Draw a large circle around those things and write in “Where I show up this holiday season” on the top of the circle Below the circle, brainstorm the non-priorities *(usually the opposite of whatever already matters to you) Draw a box around this list and title it “Where I move on this holiday season.” Now that you have a Holiday Map, notice when things show up that were unexpected and you can evaluate those things against the map, knowing you've already decided where to show up and where to move on WITHOUT the guilt. Our guilt is a habit, and it will take practice to remind yourself that it's not about normalizing guilt, it's about making decisions and having conviction about those decisions as you move through the season.  This might not feel smooth this year but with practice maybe in the future it will be easy to experience the holidays without guilt!
