Over the last few months, many have argued that Christianity is experiencing something of a "vibe shift". Just last year, Aaron Renn published a book called Life in the Negative World, arguing that the Church was living in increasingly oppositional times in the Western world. So could it be possible that, perhaps, there is something more going on here too? And if so, what should we do about it? ***Episode note: please forgive our audio imbalance issues. With declining church attendance and shifting values, there's no denying that our culture's posture toward Christianity has changed. Some say America is now “post-Christian,” but author Aaron Renn believes it is downright “anti-Christian.” In a recent NY Times profile, Renn explains why he thinks Christianity now occupies a “negative world,” and why the winsome approach of leaders like Tim Keller should be abandoned for more aggressive tactics. Then, Phil talks with legendary musician, songwriter, and producer Charlie Peacock about his new memoir, “Roots in Rhythm: A Life in Music.” Also this week, a leaked memo reveals the real impact of Trump's foreign aid cuts and immigration policy, and what exhibits would you add to the Museum of Failure?   Holy Post Plus: Bonus Interview: https://www.patreon.com/posts/124128840/   Ad-free Version of this episode: https://www.patreon.com/posts/124154267/ 0:00 - Show Starts   2:35 - Theme Song   2:00 - Sponsor - World Relief - Visit https://worldrelief.org/STAND to join The Path to support vulnerable communities around the world!   3:10 - Sponsor - Bushnell University - Equip yourself to be transformative in your community! Has the US become a bad place to be a Christian? In a recent NY Times feature, writer Aaron Renn, who has been called the "Malcolm Gladwell of Conservative Christianity," claims that America has shifted into a "negative world" where Christianity is a social liability. In this episode, Mark and Kelly wrestle with this idea that Christianity is losing its cultural dominance in the US. We cover a range of topics such as the prevalence of Christianity (a recent PRRI study asserts that 2/3 of Americans identify as Christian), Christian nationalism, persecution, tolerance, inclusion, privilege and power, the response of Progressive Christians, and what it even means to be a Christian in the first place. From Life in the Negative World: Learning how to live in today's new social and cultural environment will require examination, trial and error, and adaptation over time. But there are ways to live with integrity and follow Christ today, even in a negative world. From a peak in church attendance in the mid-20th century, Christianity has been on a trajectory of decline in the United States. Once positive toward Christianity and Christian moral teachings, cultural shifts toward the mid-90s led many to adopt a more neutral tone toward the Christian faith, seeing it as one option among many in a pluralistic public square. Today, however, Christianity is viewed negatively, and being known as a Christian often means a lower social status in elite society. Christian morality is openly repudiated and viewed as a threat to the new moral order. In Life in the Negative World, author Aaron M. Renn looks at the lessons from Christian cultural engagement over the past 70 years and suggests specific strategies for churches, institutions, and individuals to live faithfully in the "negative" world—a culture opposed to Christian values and teachings. And since there is no one-size-fits-all solution, living as a follower of Christ in the new, negative world and being missionally engaged will require a diversity of strategies. Christians in America—even fairly young Christians—can look back over their lives and recognize something has changed. They remember former days when the culture regarded Christians in a favorable light. You were in good standing if you were perceived as a Christian. But then there was a period when it wasn't necessarily good to be a Christian, but it wasn't a scarlet letter either. But today, Christians in America perceive a chill in the air—the culture today is actually hostile to Christian faith and principles. What happened? In this encore episode of the Christian Emergency Podcast, cultural commentator Aaron Renn charts out how the American culture shifted under our feet. This episode will help you better understand these changes, and also how all Christians around the globe today find themselves in a Negative World. The pressure we face may differ in degree of severity, but we are all frowned upon by broader culture when we cling to Christ. Over the past decade, pastors have faced unprecedented moral and emotional challenges in their ministry environments. This episode discusses the 'three worlds of evangelicalism' as proposed by Aaron Renn, detailing how American society's perception of Christianity has shifted from positive, to neutral, to negative. The script provides a detailed analysis of the challenges pastors face today and suggests two approaches: appeasement or engagement, emphasizing the importance of courage and biblical fidelity in a hostile cultural climate. He has also edited the Puritan John Owen's book, The Mortification of Sin, a helpful book for Christians on battling (and killing) sin.  Today we talk about his book, the need for Christians to do good work, and how to use your gifts well in the world.

As our society declines morally, trust in institutions also declines. But should we view this as an unaltered reality? Should we cease to work for a trusting society? I contend there is no institutional longevity unless trust is inherent to its mission. In this episode, I offer five recommendations for restoring a high-trust culture. For centuries, Christianity has been seen as a positive force in the world – even by those who are not Christians. But my guest today, Aaron Renn, argues that this perception has changed. In a widely read and discussed article for “First Things” magazine, first published a decade ago, Renn said that the world up until 1964 was a “positive world” for Christianity. From 1964 to 2014, we lived in what he calls the “Neutral World.” Since 2014, we live in a “Negative World” for Christianity. Renn expands on these ideas in his latest book, Life in the Negative World: Confronting Challenges in an Anti-Christian Culture. Aaron Renn is a senior fellow at American Reformer, a former senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, and a former partner at Accenture, the global consulting firm. His latest book is Life in the Negative World: Confronting Challenges in an Anti-Christian Culture. A quick note that it's a new month – May – and we have a new book we'd like to share with you. Katelyn Beaty's Celebrities for Jesus is a book that is right in the center of the bullseye for MinistryWatch readers. It discusses how and why the evangelical church has turned to celebrities, celebrity pastors and ministry leaders, and how that trend is hurting the church. We will send you that book as our thank you for a gift of any size during the month of May. To give to MinistryWatch, just go to MinistryWatch.com and hit the donate button at the top of the page. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. We get database, technical, editorial, and other support from Casey Sudduth, Stephen duBarry, Christina Darnell, and Kim Roberts. I hope you'll join me and Natasha Cowden for our roundup of the stories we've been working on this week here at MinistryWatch. Until then, may God bless you.

In this episode, we welcome Aaron Renn, author of Life in the Negative World: Confronting Challenges in an Anti-Christian Culture, to explore the profound shifts in cultural attitudes towards Christianity and the broader implications for faith in the modern era. Renn, with a diverse background ranging from management and technology consulting as a Partner at Accenture, to urban policy as a Senior Fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, and now a Senior Fellow at American Reformer, brings a unique perspective to the discussion. His extensive work has been featured in globally recognized publications such as The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, and The Atlantic. Life in the Negative World considers the dramatic changes in societal views on Christianity, tracing the journey from the mid-twentieth century—when church attendance was at its peak—to the present day, where professing Christian beliefs often results in social demotion within elite circles. Renn examines the transition from a once Christianity-affirming society to one that is, at best, indifferent, and at worst, hostile to Christian morals and teachings. In our conversation, he articulates the lessons learned from over seven decades of Christian cultural engagement, offering insightful strategies for churches, institutions, and individuals to maintain their faithfulness in an increasingly adversarial environment. This episode is not just a reflection on the challenges faced by modern Christians but also a guide on how to navigate these tumultuous waters with grace, resilience, and a deepened faith. Renn emphasizes the necessity for a diverse array of strategies to engage missionally with a world that often seems at odds with Christian values. Whether you're a person of faith struggling to find your place in this “negative world,” a church leader seeking direction for your community, or simply interested in the evolving relationship between religion and society, this conversation with Aaron Renn offers valuable insights and hope for the path forward. Join us as we discuss the implications of living out one's faith in an era that increasingly marginalizes Christian perspectives, and discover how to embrace the challenges of the negative world with courage and conviction. Today we're joined by Aaron Renn, co-founder and senior fellow at American Reformer, to discuss his book, “Life in the Negative World: Confronting Challenges in an Anti-Christian Culture,” and how Christians can respond to the ever-increasing negative view of Christians in society. We discuss how Christianity was viewed in America's history and how the 1960s saw Christian moral norms begin to be called into question. Aaron breaks these moral norms down into three phases: the Positive World, Neutral World, and Negative World. We explain what the tipping point was between the positive and neutral views of Christianity, from 1950s Christian norms being held in honor to the 1980s "health and wealth" movement. Then, what changed in 2014, and what brought about the overall negative view of Christianity in American society? We explain how Republican candidates' changing views on gay marriage and race issues show us what social shifts have occurred. We also talk about the modern evangelical response to Donald Trump and what cultural/nominal Christianity has done to Christian culture and the act of making disciples. --- Timecodes: (01:02) Introduction to Aaron (03:01) Anti-Christian culture (09:03) Positive to Neutral (15:00) 1950s Christian culture (20:37) Boomers & health & wealth movement (26:59) What changed in 2014?
