What does Yemen's political, economic and social history and experience tell us about what is realistic for the coming decade and beyond? This keynote lecture delivered by writer and researcher Helen Lackner discussed the main socio-political transformations since the 1960s, and addressed the most relevant features for the country's future. Lackner's presentation drew on her personal experience in different sectors throughout the country. Meet our speaker and chair Helen Lackner has been involved with Yemen for more than half a century, working in all three Yemeni states which have existed since the 1960s. She has worked as a consultant in social aspects of rural development in over thirty countries in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe. Her two most recent books on Yemen are 'Yemen in Crisis, Devastating Conflict, Fragile Hope' (Saqi, 2023) and 'Yemen: Poverty and Conflict' (Routledge, 2023). Lackner was the Sir William Luce Fellow at Durham University in 2016, an associate researcher at SOAS from 2016 to 2022. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Christa Bruecker from the Max Perutz Laboratories in Vienna about her work on transcriptional regulation during early embryonic development. Christa Buecker unravels the differences between naive and primed pluripotency states, showcasing how OCT4 relocalization and enhancer chromatin landscapes play pivotal roles during this transition. The conversation delves into the intricate interplay of transcription factors like OCT4 and OTX2, shedding light on their collaborative efforts in regulating gene expression during differentiation. Dr. Bücker then shares insights from her study on enhancer elements controlling FGF5 expression and discusses the surprising revelation that individual enhancers show no intrinsic activity but work together in a super additive fashion. She also touches upon her research on IRF1's connection to the gene regulatory network and its role in protecting cells against viral infections. The conversation shifts to Dr. Bücker's current research endeavors, focusing on exploring the strength of enhancers and their impact on gene expression at different distances from promoters. She shares her vision for future experiments and the integration of enhancers to decipher their impact on transcription regulation. Over the last four months, the Israeli war on Gaza has spilled over into the rest of the Middle East, from Lebanon to Iraq. But the most dramatic example has been the link between events in Palestine and Yemen. Ansar Allah, the movement known as the Houthis, imposed a blockade on ships going to Israel until there was a ceasefire. In response, the US and the UK have carried out air strikes on Houthi positions in Yemen. The Houthis say they won't be deterred by military action.Helen Lackner, one of the leading experts on modern Yemen and the author of several books about the country, returns to Long Reads to discuss the recent actions of the Houthis. Also sehr viele junge Konzepte und Investments.

In this episode I interview Dr. Jacob Lackner from the awesome history YouTube Channel Nizzahon History on why the Crusades actually happened. From historiography to heated conversations online we see a variety of narratives pushed that attempt to frame the Crusades in a way that oftentimes creates misconceptions and distortions of historical facts and sources. Was the Crusades due to unstoppable Islamic expansion? Were the Crusades unchecked colonial genocide carried out by Europeans? Why did the Europeans participate in the Crusades? What were the motives of the Crusaders themselves? Dr. Lackner briefly and thoroughly takes us into the complicated subject and explains its complexity and leaves you with a far better understanding of the Crusades and those who took part in them.
In this lecture by Dr. Jacob Lackner we are taken into the very heart of violence, martyrdom and intolerance within Medieval Europe. We explore Christian and Jewish reactions to forced conversion and baptism with the sword as we enter into a controversial subject that split the church and society of the Medieval world. From seeing different stances within the church and the head of the papacy to watching as Christians attempt to defend their Jewish neighbors from radical crusaders an intense and bitter image develops as we watch an older society attempt to discover what it believes about a minority within that society. What I found most interesting is that in this world of child abduction, forced conversion, mass murder and martyrdom we watch as the Jewish faith evolves into three forms of martyrdom which will include those who go humbly to the slaughter, suicides often including entire families who rather than being forced to convert to what they viewed as idolatry chose to die righteously and finally we come to my personal favorite and that is the Jewish Martyrs who decided to make a stand and meet violence with violence, armor with armor and sword with sword. From powerful stories to tragedy and triumph, once again the superb Dr. Lackner makes the already complicated medieval world even more complicated. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antiquity-middlages/support
I wanted to slowly end this year of 2020 by giving you an episode on positive interactions between Christians and Jews in the Middle Ages, and especially as a nice follow up to our previous episode on Medieval Antisemitism. In this lecture Dr. Lackner transports us back into the Carolingian Empire under the rule of Charlemagne and eventually his son Louis the Pious. We explore the lives of Jews living under Carolingian rule and their roles ranging from administration and diplomacy to trade. Next we explore the society of the Holy Roman Empire and the success that Jewish communities experienced as men ranging from the Priesthood and Papacy to Politicians ignored and occasionally bent the rules so to speak to attract Jewish families to their communities to further better their structure and economy as a whole. We also take a look at interactions between Jews and Christians while especially looking at the women of both groups and how they were able to form friendly and intimate relationships with one another much easier than their in many cases suspicious male counterparts, from wet nursing to communal ovens we look at a different face of medieval society as we know it. Last but not least we explore art and patronage between Christians and Jews in the Medieval world from coral rosary beads made by Sicilian Jews to art designed by Christians for their Jewish patrons and yes even taking a moment to examine mistakes by Christians in their failings in understanding Jewish life, religion and writing. Touching briefly on conversions and Jews in the military service this episode covers a large and complicated period in human history and we get to explore a variety of topics on Jewish-Christian relations in the "Dark Ages" and we must ask ourselves, were the Middle Ages really that dark? Or do we as humans tend to focus on the negative moments of our history the most while unintentionally letting the many beautiful events and moments pass us by? Further studies and resources! Hello everyone and thanks for checking out my YouTube channel and Podcast "The Study of Antiquity and the Middle Ages." In this awesome presentation Dr. Jacob Lackner explains Medieval Antisemitism and the differences between it and Anti-Judaism, we will begin n Antiquity and then expand to explain events, laws, movements and negative stereotypes in the Middle Ages. In this lecture we see how in many ways Medieval Antisemitism provided the foundation for future acts of antisemitism and in many cases we will also see a parallel with dark periods in our history such as the 20th Century and the Third Reich. Dr. Lackner is the first expert that I have hosted on the show and I was very thankful that he chose to dedicate his time to us so he could teach us about subjects involving the eras that we all love. Steve and Corey talk to Klaus Lackner, director of the Center for Negative Carbon Emissions (CNCE) at Arizona State University and the first person to suggest removing CO2 from air to address climate change. Steve asks whether Klaus' research was motivated by a tail risk of catastrophic outcomes due to CO2 build up. Klaus explains that he sees atmospheric CO2 as a waste management problem. Calculations show that removing human-produced carbon is energetically and economically viable. Klaus describes his invention, a “mechanical tree”, that passively collects CO2 from the air, allowing it to be stored or converted to fuel.Resources Transcript Klaus Lackner (Faculty Bio) Center for Negative Carbon Emissions at ASU
