Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Sing a beautiful Easter Cantata with us today. Rev. Brian Hamer, US Navy Chaplain, joins Sarah and Andy to talk about J.S. Bach's BWV 4, "Christ lag in Todesbanden" (Christ Lay in Death's Strong Bands), including the texts for this cantata, unique features that set it apart from Bach's other sacred works, the familiar melody that unites each movement, and beautiful highlights from each of the movements. It's Bach Week on The Coffee Hour! Today, Dr. Maurice Boyer, professor of music at Concordia University Chicago and director of the American Kantorei (a group dedicated to the performance of J.S. Bach's music), joins Andy and Sarah to talk about Bach's theology in his sacred chorale cantatas. Hear about the place of the cantata or passion in the liturgy of a Sunday morning, how these cantatas follow our Church Year, what makes a chorale a unique part of the cantata, and which chorales would sound especially familiar to us. Familiarize yourself with Bach's music that you will probably recognize! Work through this list of Chorale Cantatas by J.S. Bach with melodies contained in the Lutheran Service Book. For solid literal translations of the texts, see Emmanuel Music in Boston at emmanuelmusic.org. For lectionary readings, see the one-year lectionary found in the LSB Introduction p.xx or download at lcms.org/worship/lectionary-series. Rutgers University Professor of Music, TACOtalk producer, and violinist Mark Zaki discusses with Tom the practice of composers “borrowing” from those who came before them. Enjoy excerpts of great music as they trace a trail of musical appropriation of the 11th century Gregorian Easter Chant Victimae Paschali Laudes across the centuries to Martin Luther, then on to Bach's early 18th century setting in Christ lag in Todesbanden, and finally to Mark's own setting of the work in his string quartet it comes to tell us it is gone.

"Ye choirs of New Jerusalem" - Charles V. Stanford Lyrics: Ye choirs of new Jerusalem, Your sweetest notes employ, The Paschal victory to hymn In strains of holy joy. For Judah’s Lion bursts His chains, Crushing the serpent’s head; And cries aloud through death’s domains To wake the imprisoned dead. From hell’s devouring jaws the prey Alone our Leader bore; His ransomed hosts pursue their way Where Jesus goes before. Triumphant in His glory now To Him all power is given; To Him in one communion bow All saints in earth and heaven. While we, His soldiers, praise our king, His mercy we implore, Within His palace bright to bring And keep us evermore. All glory to the Father be, All glory to the Son, All glory, Holy Ghost, to Thee, While endless ages run. Alleluia. Amen.
This episode of Jim's Lower Lounge is our most classical episode ever. Our guest, Leigh Howard Stevens, is a New Jersey native and world-renowned percussionist who has made historic contributions to the study of the marimba and other mallet instruments. He has also published several acclaimed books on percussion technique, and he is the founder of Malletech, a New Jersey-based company that manufactures and distributes instruments and mallets of Stevens' own design. Today, we discuss Leigh's many years of entrepreneurship and why he loves listening to classical music, as well how to (and how not to) spend a fortune on audio equipment.Find Leigh Howard Stevens:mostlymarimba.commalletech.com/aboutFeatured music:Claude Debussy. “Children’s Corner / Serenade for the Doll.”Performed by Leigh Howard Stevens.Marimba When…, Resonator Records, 1993.J.S. BWV 4 is a special work for the host, and for Bach, it is one of his earliest surviving cantatas today, written around a melody that appears in each movement.
