478: Low energy availability - and how to combat it

Table Talk

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 23, 2023 31:45

In this episode of the Food Matters Live podcast, we dive deep into the critical topic of fuelling the bodies of athletes, with a particular focus on female athletes.  In previous episodes, we have emphasised the importance of achieving the correct nutritional balance, and explored the lack of research regarding the nutritional requirements of female athletes.  But now, we are taking a more in-depth look at a specific issue that looms large in the realm of sports nutrition - low energy availability. Low energy availability (LEA), affects both male and female athletes, but its impact can be especially pronounced among sportswomen. So, what exactly is low energy availability, and why does it deserve our attention? LEA can have a significant impact on an athlete's overall performance and health. It is a complex area, with dietary choices, energy expenditure, and physiological functions all having a role to play. Understanding how low energy availability relates to nutrition is essential for athletes and their support teams. Inadequate energy intake can lead to reduced muscle strength, impaired recovery, hormonal imbalances, and increased risk of injuries. In this episode, we delve into the intricacies of low energy availability, explore its causes, consequences, and most importantly, how it can be prevented and managed through proper nutrition strategies.  Guest: Renee McGregor, Sports Dietitian, Author and Co-founder of TRAINBRAVE

451: The need for more research into nutrition in women's sport

Nutritional studies are vital to the world of sports. The right nutrients can optimise an athlete's performance, reduce their risk of injury and help them get the most out of training. But traditionally, research on nutrition for female athletes has been lacking. Despite their incredible achievements and contributions to sports, a review from the University of Chester suggests just 6% of sports science research has focused specifically on female athletes. That figure is even more shocking when you consider just how popular women's sport is. 49% of athletes at the last Olympic Games in Tokyo were female, while 50 million people around the world tuned in to watch the England women's football team win the Euros in 2022. All of this makes it even more important to grow the body of research so that the increasing number of women in sport are not under-served by it. So, what exactly is the role of nutrition in women's sports? How does it differ to men's sport. And how can we encourage more studies in this area? In this episode of Full of Fire, I speak to leading sports and eating disorders dietician Renee McGregor and find out about her job, her own terrifying experience of anorexia and her work with young athletes to encourage healthy relationships with food and exercise.Renee is a best-selling author and leading sports and eating disorder dietitian with over 15 years experience working with elite athletes, coaches and sport science teams alongside normal teenagers.Renee has delivered nutrition support to athletes over the last two Olympic and Paralympic cycles, and regularly works with high performing and professional athletes that have developed a dysfunctional relationship with food and exercise. She founded the #TRAINBRAVE campaign aiming to inspire more athletes to share their stories and raise awareness of the risks of eating disorders and RED-s (Relative Energy Deficiency syndrome - when people regularly exercise hard and don't eat enough to refuel). Renee talks about the reasons young people develop eating disorders and speaks about her own experiences with racism and low self-worth as a teenager that led to her own anorexia. She highlights the damaging messages that are transmitted via social media by influencers and celebrities who have no education in nutrition. Renee herself aims to use social media to educate with truth and science (after studying for 3 degrees in Biochemistry, Dietetics and Sports Nutrition!), but admits to having a love/hate relationship with Instagram. Renee also talks about the signs you can notice in yourself and your friends of developing unhealthy relationships with food or exercise and gives advice about what to do if you have a friend you're worried about. This is an in-depth episode that is valuable listening for young people - and also for sports coaches, PE teachers and parents. Nutrition, sports nutrition, eating disorders and RED-s are such complex areas, but it's really important to be aware of the issues.

Eating disorders are significantly more common within the world of sport than the rest of the population, and appear to be on the rise. Renee has 20 years of experience working in clinical and performance nutrition, with Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth teams. She is also the author of ‘Orthorexia, When Healthy Eating Goes Bad’, as well as a number of other books on nutrition and healthy eating, and is the co- founder of #TRAINBRAVE, a campaign raising the awareness of eating disorders in sport. Renee reveals some of the signs that indicate someone might have an eating disorder, and why food is the symptom of a deeper problem. They discuss the negative impact social media can have, and why it’s your keen amateur athletes rather than elite sportspeople who might be the biggest danger group. Renee talks about various diets- including low-carb, intermittent fasting and veganism- and explains how some people use them as a way to develop a controlling relationship with food. They talk about the importance of balance, relaxation and moderation, and the dangers of overtraining- and why working out your values and basing you self-esteem on them, rather than external validation, is key.

Anna Boniface was selected to run for England after she became the first non-elite woman to finish the London Marathon in 2017. But over-training and under-eating meant her dreams were short-lived because she failed to finish the event after suffering a stress fracture to her ankle. She was later diagnosed with a condition known as Energy Deficiency in Sport - brought on by pushing her body to the limit and failing to refuel properly. The condition affects hundreds of young athletes and can lead to serious eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia. It can also weaken bones, stop women athletes from having periods and dramatically reduce testosterone levels in men. As the TrainBrave campaign is launched to raise awareness of the condition, 5 Live Investigates hears from those suffering the consequences. They include a young cyclist left with the bones of an 80-year old, and an Olympic hopeful forced to give up athletics in her mid-20’s after four spinal fractures brought on by her diet. photo credit: kbschlee photography
