Part two of our exploration into orthorexia sees host Gabby Sanderson breakdown with guest Renee McGregor the most common elimination food groups in orthorexia, and how and why doing this can be dangerous on the body. Renee busts more food myths when it comes to things like sugar and refined sugar, pasta made from vegetables or lentils, and the ongoing white versus brown or wholemeal debate. Renee also explains why we need to be cautious with who we follow on social media that use the term ‘professional' or ‘medic' when it comes to healthy eating, and wraps up the conversation with how orthorexic's can begin to heal and change their beliefs, by getting to the truth of the dangerous messages they have bought into. In this podcast, I talk to Renee McGregor about carbohydrates, and sugar and why they DON'T make you instantly gain body fat. We get deep into the subject of Blood Glucose Monitors, why they are useful and why companies that produce them are misleading and potentially harming our understanding of health and nutrition. Key Takeaways From The Podcast:Carbohydrates are an important energy source, especially for the brain. They don't instantly lead to weight gain.Insulin helps absorb nutrients and facilitates recovery after exercise. Fear of insulin is misguided.Blood sugar naturally fluctuates throughout the day. Trying to keep it in a very narrow range is unrealistic.Continuous glucose monitoring is unnecessary for most people and can promote dysfunctional eating habits.CGM companies are giving false and potentially harmful nutrition advice based on poor science. The Importance of Carbohydrates:Carbs provide glucose, which is the preferred fuel for the brain and central nervous system. Complex carbs break down slowly while simple carbs digest quickly.Overeating simple carbs like sugar can lead to excess calories. But complex carbs like potatoes are important for energy and fiber.Carbs don't instantly turn into fat. Overall balance matters over weeks/months, not day-to-day.Insulin and Blood SugarInsulin helps absorb nutrients, not just glucose. It facilitates recovery after exercise by increasing uptake.Blood sugar fluctuates naturally throughout the day based on many factors. Trying to overly control blood sugar can be counterproductive and disrupt hormones.Problems with Continuous Glucose Monitoring CGM's:CGM is unnecessary for most people and promotes dysfunctional eating habits.CGM's apps and companies that promote them can provide false nutrition advice based on poor science. CGM's can lead to obsessive food restriction, especially for women affecting menstruation.
January is traditionally a time for many when we look at improving our diet. But In our current culture, to which cutting out entire food groups like sugar, fats, carbohydrates and dairy are encouraged and commended, we must stop to question where these recommendations and messages have come from. And should we believe them? Although being aware of and concerned with the nutritional quality of the food we eat isn't a problem in and of itself, people with orthorexia become so fixated on so-called ‘healthy eating' or ‘clean eating' that they actually damage their own well-being and experience health consequences such as malnutrition and/or impairment of psychosocial functioning as a result. Excessive exercise or exercise addiction is also extremely common in orthorexic's. The term orthorexia nervosa is used to describe the pathological fixation associated with consuming healthy food. In the first of two episodes dedicated to looking at when the obsession to eat healthily goes too far and has the opposite effect, host Gabby talks to Renee McGregor, a leading Sports and Eating disorder specialist dietitian and best selling author, with 20 years experience working in clinical and performance nutrition. Orthorexia nervosa was first proposed by Dr Stephen Bratman in the late 1990s, perhaps not coincidentally around the same time as the first social media site was born. And although Orthorexia Nervosa is not currently a clinically recognised eating disorder, this unhealthy obsession with healthy eating is becoming a widespread problem. Part 1 of this conversation into the pitfalls of obsessive 'health eating', restriction diets and over exercising will help you to understand where orthorexia came from, why eliminating food groups without medical reason is not a healthy choice, and why so called 'wellness guru's', celebrities and influencers have a lot to be accountable for. *Trigger warning - Disordered Eating* Hannah is joined by shining star 1rebel fitness trainer Martha. In this episode, Martha opens up about her personal experience with disordered eating and how it affected her life in multiple ways. In 2022 the NHS published that they were treating a record number of young people with eating disorders, so it really is an important topic to discuss and find ways to help wherever possible. Martha explains her journey from musical theatre into the fitness realm. She explains the feelings she had, how she saw herself and how she reached out for help to start her recovery process. Hannah asks Martha a range of questions around how her family and friends reached out to her to discuss her weight loss and for Martha's advice for anyone who has a friend or family member struggling with an eating disorder, and what might be a caring way to approach it. Martha details how therapy helped her work on the feelings of control internally that contributed to her weight loss, and how she worked with professional Renee McGregor to start her recovery process. Martha highlights that it is not a linear journey to recovery and that taking whatever small steps you can, is a good place to start. This episode highlights how eating disorders can be highly complex. It was an open, honest and highly informative discussion. Martha states that she is always happy for anyone to reach out to her if they want someone to talk to. Thank you to Martha for being so open. You don't need to be a professional athlete to reap the benefits from fueling yourself correctly with food and movement. But with so many confusing mixed messages, diet plans and other people's influences over how we should look, eat and show up in life, often we are left operating sub-optimally without even realizing it. Do you try to eat well to reduce the risk of chronic diseases? Or do you try to eat well to look a certain way? Do you look at other people who seem to be radiating health and happiness and think "why don't I feel like that when I follow their ‘tips' and suggestions?" Do you feel a prisoner to your own cravings? Is fatigue the bane of your existence? You might be under-fueling even if you are ‘doing all the things', and not enjoying life as much as you should be because of deep rooted fear derived from outdated, inaccurate propaganda. Renee McGregor is a leading Sports and Eating disorder specialist dietitian with 20 years experience working in clinical and performance nutrition. Renee works with individuals, athletes of all levels and ages, coaches and sports science teams to provide nutritional strategies to enhance sport performance, manage eating disorders and overtraining. She is also author of ‘Training Food: Get the Fuel You Need to Achieve Your Goals Before During And After Exercise', ‘Fast Fuel - Food For Triathlon Success', ‘Orthorexia: When Healthy Eating Goes Bad' and ‘More Fuel You: Understanding Your Body & how to Fuel Your Adventures' with another book on the way. Renee passionately believes in only giving advice backed on science and sitting down with host Gabby busts some common nutritional myths, whilst sharing her deep disdain for the ‘move more, eat less' mantra. Renee talks about the pressures athletes are put under and how that can lead to the development of an eating disorder. She also shares her concerns about some of the harmful messaging from the ‘wellness industry' that are setting people up to fail and cause potential health problems. In this jam packed episode, Renee teaches Gabby about low energy availability, the importance of female hormone health and how food can impact. Plus she stresses why it's never ok for girls to go without periods. In addition Renee reveals the foods that make her feel strong on the outside and on the inside and shares why it's actually much healthier to go for a slice of cake than a protein bar. This episode of The Happier Life Project will make you question how you eat and rethink where your priorities line up on the scale from vanity reasons to health, happiness and longevity. Eloise du Luart is a professional long distance triathlete. Although she was born and raised in the UK, she represents France internationally. Eloise played Lacrosse for England before discovering triathlon. But what's particularly special about Eloise is the way she speaks so openly about eating disorders and the importance of fuelling as she doesn't want anyone else to go through what she has been through. You'll hear: 09:00 How Eloise first heard and got into triathlon, thanks to a colleague at work. And why at the end of 2015 at the end of University she decided to have a crack at going pro. "Its the worst decision I could have made. I wasn't ready mentally or physically." 16:45 Eloise talks about some of the "stupid" mistakes she made as a youngster which led to an eating disorder. It's not normal not to have your period. I was a ticking time bomb. Being a professional athlete isn't just about training. 21:00 Some important messages about fuelling before during and after training and the dangers of Orthorexia too. 29:00 Eloise talks about RED-s and contacting Renee Mcgregor who told her she needed to sort her life out. That was one of the darkest moments. I hit rock bottom which was painful but needed. I have to take responsibility. It was so obvious but yet it wasn't. I still don't know the extent to the damage I've done to my body. 35:30 How Renee helped Eloise to get her period back. Eloise also talks about some of the things she used to eat and what she eats now. "It's just normal now!" 44:00 Eloise talks about how she got a pro card for a second time and why she now represents France. 49:00 Why Eloise is grateful for everything she has been through because it's made her have a different perspective. Why she enjoys working part-time alongside her training and racing. 56:00 Is Eloise proud of herself and how far she has come? "I just hope I can help someone else and stop someone else. I think I feared the future for a long time. Find out more about this week's guests Eloise du Luart https://www.instagram.com/eloisedulu/ (Instagram) Like what you heard? Let me know! Sports and eating disorder dietician Renee McGregor is this week's guest on the 33Fuel podcast. Renee has over 20 years' experience working in a range of capacities, from NHS clinics to Olympic athletes within a range of sports. Within her unmatched depth of nutrition, one of Renee's particular areas of expertise is the subject of RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency Syndrome). RED-S is ultimately caused by a combination of overtraining and under-fuelling, but it'd be remiss to think only elite athletes develop it. Our conversation explores how anyone can develop RED-S. Indeed, the average amateur athlete striving for optimal performance while juggling life's stressors can certainly develop the syndrome and, if unchecked, there can be serious health consequences.
