Welcome back to a Thanksgiving Edition of the Video Store Podcast! We've selected a veritable cornucopia of Thanksgiving-themed specials and films for you to watch this week, so make a plate and join us for a feast of fun and festive Thanksgiving recommendations. First up is Garfield's Thanksgiving from 1989. This delightful special puts Garfield on a diet, sees Jon and Liz on their first date, and will give you a belly full of laughter. It also brings back a fan-favorite character from the Garfield and Friends animated series and other Garfield specials—Grandma, voiced by the late, great Pat Carroll. Join us on the couch for a feast of laughter with Garfield. The next course is the iconic episode from the 1978 sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati, “Turkeys Away.” Even if you've never seen a single episode of WKRP, you can still watch “Turkeys Away” and still understand everything that's going on, and will laugh along with the show. You too will believe turkeys can fly when you watch “Turkeys Away.”Our third course this week is the evergreen Thanksgiving staple, 1973's A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. It's not the holidays without the Peanuts gang and that includes Thanksgiving. Make a plate of toast, pretzel sticks, popcorn, and jelly beans, and wash it all down with a parfait as you enjoy A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving with us, you sly dog. Finally, the John Hughes 1987 comedy classic, Planes, Trains & Automobiles is a fantastic dessert to polish off your Thanksgiving celebrations. Filled with good humor, screwball mishaps, and a lot of heart, it's the perfect finish to your Thanksgiving celebrations. We recommend watching this film with your best buddy, and we hope that if you do any traveling this Thanksgiving season, you have a much easier time than Neal and Del. We also hope you don't have to race Kevin Bacon for a cab either. Thanks for joining us this week on the Video Store Podcast. We hope you have a safe and happy Thanksgiving with the ones you love, and enjoy these Thanksgiving specials along with us. This is a public episode. What's up, dudes? When people talk about the classics of Thanksgiving television, they always talk about the WKRP in Cincinatti's "Turkeys Away" episode! My bud Vinnie Brezinsky from Huey and Bax joins me to gab--or is it gobble?--about this classic turkey drop! The station is running so smoothly that Carlson is feeling useless and left out. He pries into everyone else's projects, angering and annoying them in the process. Consequently, he decides to take matters into his own hands. He clandestinely plans a secret Thanksgiving Day publicity stunt. During disc jockey Johnny Fever's segment, on-the-scene reporter Les Nessman gives live commentary of the spectacle. Actually, debacle is the correct term, because the stunt involved Carlson and Herb throwing live turkeys into the unsuspecting crowd from a helicopter. People run from the turkey bombs just as Johnny cuts the feed. Finally, Carlson, Herb, and Les return to the station and detail the horrific affair.Based on a true story, this episode has comedy in spades! Drug references? Yep. Absurd ideas from incompetent bosses? Check. Turkeys hitting the pavement like sacks of wet cement? Definitely! So grab your microphone, hop in your chopper, and fly off into this episode about the classic WKRP Turkey Drop!Check us out on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Totally Rad Christmas Mall & Arcade, Teepublic.com, or TotallyRadChristmas.com! This week Val and Rachel discuss two radio workplace sitcoms from different eras: Newsradio and WKRP in Cincinnati.  NewsRadio is an American sitcom television series that aired on NBC from March 21, 1995 to May 4, 1999, focusing on the work lives of the staff of a New York City AM news radio station. It had an ensemble cast featuring Dave Foley, Stephen Root, Andy Dick, Maura Tierney, Vicki Lewis, Joe Rogan, Khandi Alexander, Jon Lovitz, and Phil Hartman in his final regular role before his death in 1998. WKRP in Cincinnati is an American sitcom television series that features the misadventures of the staff of a struggling fictional radio station in Cincinnati, Ohio. The show was created by Hugh Wilson and was based upon his experiences working in advertising sales at Top 40 radio station WQXI in Atlanta. Many of the characters and even some of the stories (including that of the Season 1 episode "Turkeys Away") are based on people and events at WQXI. Wilson once told The Cincinnati Enquirer that he selected WKRP as the call sign to stand for C-R-A-P.   Hot Topics include: 1.) Gardening & landscaping updates 2.) Time slot shenanigans 3.) Contemporary criticism of Newsradio 4.) The final haunted season after Phil Hartman's death 5.) The kookiest co-workers we've ever had 6.) Bailey and Jennifer: The Ginger and Mary Ann of the 70s 7.) The WKRP very special concert episode 8.) Adjacent TV, MAD Magazine, The Most 90s 9.) Cute v. pretty, Katherine with a K 10.) Radio DJ Quiz!!! 11.) Episode 339: As God As My Witness, I Thought Turkeys Could Fly This week Host Dave Bledsoe planned a big Thanksgiving Day promotion where he would drop live turkeys from to the top of the Empire State Building, only to discover that he is still not allowed back in the building after the “Santa Incident” in 2009. (Yes, alcohol was involved) On the show this week, we talk turkey day TV tropes and how every Thanksgiving Episode is exactly the same, except for one. (Of course it is WKRP!) Along the way we learn about that time Dave revealed himself to be an anti-immigrant asshole by mocking someone without a cultural context for his jokes. From there we dive right into the history of Thanksgiving Episodes on radio and television before we tell you the true tale of where the WKRP Turkey Drop came from! Following that we reveal our own Thanksgiving traditions by cluing you in on the greatest Thanksgiving Movie of all time. (No, not that one, the one starring Joe Don Baker!) Viable means there are enough of you listening to justify an advertiser spending money on jamming a commercial in front of your ears. Don't get us wrong, we like money but we DON'T like commercials. We'd rather not have one (or two, or three) in the show. The idea of making some money from the show is very attractive. Newsman Les Nesman reports from the Pinedale Mall with the stations latest promotion, which goes horribly wrong. His reporting is classic in so many ways, especially when he yells, "Oh, the humanity!"  And of course, Johnny Fever's classic response.......well, you just have to listen to it.  Enjoy our Thanksgiving episode, and from Jim and I -- we sincerely hope your families Thanksgiving is the best one ever.  Despite the current conditions.

WELCOME BACK!Hey!! It's Allen and Donna Stare! It's time for another episode of the "WKRP-Cast"...and this one's a doozy! It's "Turkeys Away", the most popular and most famous episode of WKRP ever conceived!! Who thought of it? Who wrote it? Is it true? Were any turkeys harmed in the making of this episode?? These questions and more will be answered this time as we tackle the 800lb. Turkey of sitcom episodes. The WKRP-Cast is on the air...grab your brains, fellow babies, this one is going to whack you upside the head like a sack of wet cement!!YOU KNOW YOU MAKE US WANNA...This is proving to be a lot of fun. After the ep, we'll be doing some shout outs to friends and listeners. You can completely skip it if you want...you won't miss any episode goodies...but, then again, you never know if we're going to be talking about you!!WATCH ALONG DETAILS...[Want to watch along with us? It's a blast!! We highly recommend the 'Shout Factory' boxed DVD set of the entire WKRP series. For reasons you'll have to listen to in the "Prolog" episode, all streaming versions of the original "WKRP in Cincinnati" have had the original music cues removed. Generic music beds and stings were used in place of the original music for the syndicated version of the series. 'Shout Factory' has been able to restore an estimated 85% of all WKRP music cues to the original "as-aired" content for their DVD release. They've also restored scenes that had been cut to shorten episodes for syndication. The original eps ran 25 minutes. The syndication eps were shortened to 22 minutes. Over 88 episodes that's more than four hours of lost content, including the performance by "Detective" at the end of "Hoodlum Rock." Get the COMPLETE series...get the Shout Factory DVDs. The Shout Factory complete series box has a release date of 2014. All individual seasons of Shout Factory disks were released starting in 2015.]
