A week-by-week, episode-by-episode re-watch podcast spending time with America's Favorite Radio Station: "WKRP in Cincinnati". Hosted by husband and wife, Allen and Donna Stare. Allen started in radio at age 15 in 1980. WELCOME BACK!Hey, Fellow Babies!! It's been awhile! Thanks for continuing to listen to the WKRP-Cast. Make sure to tell the other Fellow Babies to dial us up!! We know there are others out there who haven't joined the party. If you remember, at the end of the original podcast run, we mentioned putting together a "Line of the Episode" Super Cut. The "LOTE" feature was added to the 28th episode, "Carlson for President." In order to do a SuperCut for the entire series, we had to go back through all of the first season and a few second season episodes to determine a Line of the Episode.WE FINALLY GOT IT DONE!! This is it!! All 90 episodes (well, not "Love Returns"...but the other 89!) are boiled down to about 11 minutes of hilarity. Some of them are a riot, some of them will fly right by unless you are a BIG fan and really know your 'KRP. Strap in, Fellow Babies...this is like a big ol' hit of Nitrous. You'll be giggling for quite a while after!!! WATCH ALONG DETAILS...[Want to watch along with us? It's a blast!! We highly recommend the 'Shout Factory' boxed DVD set of the entire WKRP series. For reasons you'll have to listen to in the "Prolog" episode, all streaming versions of the original "WKRP in Cincinnati" have had the original music cues removed. Generic music beds and stings were used in place of the original music for the syndicated version of the series. 'Shout Factory' has been able to restore an estimated 85% of all WKRP music cues to the original "as-aired" content for their DVD release. They've also restored scenes that had been cut to shorten episodes for syndication. The original eps ran 25 minutes. The syndication eps were shortened to 22 minutes. WELCOME BACK!!Incredibly, we are finished with all 90 of the syndicated episode breakdowns. Two years ago this day seemed SOOOO far away. Now that it's here, we are a little bummed we won't be dropping a new show into your podcast feed each Tuesday. We do hope you keep re-listening to old shows. You'd be surprised how much you forget! (Quick, who invented the Whoopee Cushion??) As we've rolled along, many listeners have supplied us with corrections, or additional information about some of the things we've discussed. Sometimes we've just totally blown it (President Aaron Burr, anyone?). We started to collect up these corrections with the thought we might address them someday. With no more episodes to dismantle, 'someday' is here. This is our "Misses & Messes" Episode. Anything we've missed, anything we've messed up, we've tried to include it in this episode. Which state has the most Tornadoes? You wouldn't know after listening to the episode "Tornado." We explain what we messed up and who's really got the most twisters. We've thrown in a couple of laughs, a few music clips, some weird sound effects...so it's our usual grab bag of goofiness, only without a new episode of WKRP to talk about (sniff). Don't miss this fun and fascinating conversation with the man who took WKRP from Easy Listening wasteland to the Rock-n-Roll Promised Land. Gary shares great stories from the set, and from his extensive stage career. He gets a few 'wig bubbles', checks in with 'the Killer', and tells us about the coolest thing he nabbed from the show. WELCOME BACK!!This is it, Fellow Babies. Welcome to the FINAL network first-run airing of WKRP. This episode, "The Impossible Dream" had been shelved by the network in the spring of 1982. Now, with a breakout hit on their hands, the network decided to play this never-before-seen episode well into the fall season...the season AFTER WKRP had been cancelled. It's Les's birthday. The passing of another year has spurred the News Beacon of the Ohio Valley to strive for more in his career. That, and his mother is in town. Les suddenly starts pulling awards off the wall and announces he's headed to New York to take Dan Rather's news-chair. Jennifer reacts to the birthday and mother-visit news with the same answer: Party Time! She plans a surprise birthday party for Les. For some reason, the guest of honor shows up way early. He's there before any of the other guests! He arrives without his mother and tells Jennifer he hates it for anyone to know about his birthday.Ms. Marlowe could not be having a worse day. Triple vodkas all around!!At the party, Les debuts his on-camera demo tape. It's beyond bad. Les realizes he's made a fool of himself and runs out. Will Les go to New York? Will we meet Les's mother? Will we shudder just a little bit at the overwhelming cringiness of the final three minutes? Spoilers!! The answers would be: no, yes and yes. Let's join Lester in tilting at some windmills during this FINAL WKRP episode!! Moo-goo, anyone??WATCH ALONG DETAILS...[Want to watch along with us? It's a blast!! WELCOME BACK!!We launched our first episode on Sept. 1st of 2020. At the time we casually thought, "yeah, this'll take about two years." It seemed so far off! Amazingly, it's here. We've been through 89 of the 90 syndicated episodes of WKRP. We've unearthed new and exciting WKRP trivia! We've talked to more than 20 WKRP guest stars, writers and producers. We've had some big laughs! It's been a blast connecting with WKRP fans from around the world. We have ONE regular episode to go...but not until NEXT week! THIS week, we're talking to two of our most frequent podcast contributors. We hear from Canadian 'blogger Roy Penney and the man who we've dubbed "The Accountant of Rock", Mr. Michael Hernandez. These guys live and breathe WKRP. They've been a huge resource for us as we prepare the show each week. It was fun getting to know both of them. They've got some great insights into the show! Check it out. Then...next week...September 20th...it will be time (sniff, sniff) for our final episode!! (ON the 40th Anniversary of the Final Episode!)After that...stay tuned, Fellow Babies! WELCOME BACK!!Hey, Fellow Babies!! Amazingly, we just passed our second anniversary since dropping the "Prolog" episode on 9/1/20. Two Big Years of the WKRP-Cast!! Since it's Labor Day in the United States, we are taking off this weekend. No new episode, but we DO have a new interview for you. After about a year of pursuit, we finally caught up to Stacy Heather Tolkin. She played "Bunny Tarlek" in both the "Real Families" and "Frog Story" episodes. Although she was only seven at the time, Stacy has some great memories of working on the show. We talk to Stacy for about half an hour. Since she mentioned "Frog Story" several times, it seemed like the perfect add-on. So, enjoy a re-run of our episode about "Frog Story" following Stacy's interview. We're counting down to the end!! We will be running our final "episode" version of the podcast on 9/20. WELCOME BACK!!This roll of film had fifty pictures of a black guy in a tux holding a bottle of shampoo...and ONE picture of a dorky white guy at a bar-b-que grill. Guess which one the printer chose? Would your answer change if you knew the photographer was Herb Tarlek? In a career marked by colossal screw-ups, this is one colossal screw-up. Herb's new client "Soul Suds" went the full multi-media promo route. They're utilizing point of purchase display stand-ups featuring WKRP's own Venus Flytrap. Venus is right there at the store shelf promoting the same shampoo he's pitching on the radio. He's in a tux, his hair is looking awesome and he's holding the product. It's coordinated marketing synergy on an unprecedented level! And HERB is running the show!! What could go wrong?Oh, just the pesky printer mentioned above. Herb told them they should figure anything he said was wrong. They listened to him on this one...the fools. Now Herb is cooking up burgers in convenience and grocery stores all over town while claiming to be a laid-back Venus Flytrap. We can't even see what his hair looks like because he's wearing a HAT!! This might be all she wrote for Herb. Unless a gorgeous blonde temptress can be found to inspire the client to forgive poor Mr. Tarlek. If only we knew a gorgeous blonde temptress...Jennifer, surprisingly, steps up.It's a tale of blind...or possibly blonde...ambition, dueling receptionists, deceptive salesmen and the most perceptive CEO Jennifer has ever met. This time beauty is in the ear of the beholder, and a good thing for Herb.Strap in, fellow babies. It's time to push 'play' and lather up. WELCOME BACK!!Finally! All the hard work for the KRP-Crew seems to be paying off! Andy got the new Book in this morning and there's some GOOD news!! The Mighty 'KRP has risen to a quite respectable SIXTH in the Cincinatti Market!!Andy calls the gang together for the big reveal. Herb thinks this is it for his time on the streets...the phone will be ringing off the hook, right??In the lobby, a gentleman with a deep and resonating voice has introduced himself to Jennifer as the NEW News Director. Ummm...huh?Mrs. Carlson has reached out to Fargo, N.D. in search of...what? A replacement for Les? No, when Andy confronts her, she says Les still has a job. Turns out, Mr. Travis might be the one looking for work. Mama intends to turn the whole rockin' shootin' match into a respectable "All News" station. Will Mama get her way? Will Andy be heading out "town to town...up and down the dial"? Surely not! Then again, WKRP the TV show hasn't been doing nearly as well as WKRP the radio station when it comes to ratings. This might be the last show of the series, let alone the last show of the season. And, really, it's not even the last show of the season. Big programming news, fellow babies! Next week we veer WAY off the known path as we check out a first-run WKRP episode that didn't air until AUGUST!! WELCOME BACK!!We're 87 episodes into the series and Mr. Blake Hunter has decided we really need to clarify a few things that came before...like stuff that happened during the PILOT!It's time to corral all those things we've heard about Venus over the last four years and explain how it could all happen to one man. We know him as military deserter...accomplished teacher...hottest nighttime deejay in NOLA...how was he able to pull it all off and he's not 63 years old??We discover a few things in Venus' past have been...fudged. Okay, so maybe Mr. Travis outright lied about a couple of things, but all in the name of good radio, right??Mama Carlson doesn't think so. She's dropped by the station one evening to meet with Arthur. He's late. She is walking through the station as Andy and Venus are involved in some serious horseplay.Mama winds up getting tackled in the midst of all the goofing around. In exchange for her forgiveness, she forces Andy and Venus to tell us the TRUE story of Mr. Venus Flytrap and his "biggest" audience in The Big Easy.Sit back, Fellow Babies...the episode was only 25 minutes, but they jammed so MUCH into it!! WELCOME BACK!!Les is a consummate newsman...when the news is farm related. As Johnny says, Les's stories have that unmistakable 'barnyard aroma.' Andy has an assignment for the News Beacon of the Ohio Valley. Mrs. Carlson is a big supporter of a local children's hospital. The Hospital is in dire need of community support. Andy hands Les the info and tells him to go down there and do a story on it. Now. Les, in an inspired bit of delegation, hands the story to Bailey. Truth be told (which doesn't happen a lot in this episode) Les would much rather be working on saving the endangered Rutabaga (yeah, you'll have to talk to Lester about that one).Bailey goes to the Hospital. After being battered around a bit by the administrator, she's finally given a tour. Upon her return to the station, Bailey writes a beautiful, heart-string tugging story about her experience. Too bad it's all a lie.Les doesn't know it's a lie, so he's more than happy to read Bailey's story on the air...after a threat from Andy.Suddenly people are afraid of losing their jobs, the station is in fear of losing its license...this is AWFUL!!Three minutes later, everything's fine. To find out exactly HOW everything could turn out so well...you're going to have to watch! Or, better yet, why don't you LISTEN!? We've got all the answers this week...even if very few of them are true.Oh, and as a bonus, we've got a five minute-plus report on the Whoopee Cushion! And we're not the least bit sorry about it!! WELCOME BACK!!There's a Fire in the Flimm Building!! Alliteration loving Les is happy to hear it's on the FIFTH floor! The gang was just leaving for the day as the conflagration broke out.Herb and Jennifer made it on the elevator. They walked right past Johnny who was coming in for work...ummm...yeah, you'll need to ask Johnny about this one.Herb and Jennie-poo wind up trapped between the 8th and 9th floors...the rest of the gang is stuck on 14.Johnny decides, since he's got 12 hours to kill, he might as well plunge into the jaws of death...or something like that. He rides a firehose down into the elevator shaft in order to save Jennifer, Herb and the stranded car.If this is sounding less like an episode of WKRP and more like an Irwin Allen disaster film...you'd be right! WELCOME BACK!!Venus snuck a girl past the night guard. Okay, so this is not unusual for Venus. What's different this time? The girl is using Venus as cover so she can engineer a robbery at a Wholesale Jeweler elsewhere in the Flimm Building. Sounds like "Law and Order: WKRP", right? It kind of is! The fuzz shows up in the bullpen and Venus is hauled downtown in cuffs. Johnny, in disguise, visits the jailbird. His fake beard had to sign the visitor's log separately. We spend a lot of time in a courtroom and Venus might GO TO PRISON!! The whole gang is enlisted to act as character witnesses. Max Wright returns as fearless Carlson Enterprises attorney Frank Bartman. It looks bad for Venus. He might be in real trouble. In the end, a whole lot of prayer and a little bit of luck saves the day. Venus is returned to the station and you can hear about the whole thing by pushing "Play." WELCOME BACK!!Big things happening all over the place this week, Fellow Babies! Herb got a new client. Believe it or not, a sponsor for Les's newscasts. It's a computer dating service called "I'll Take Romance." They're just across the river into Kentucky.Fill out their questionnaire and be matched to the guy or gal of your dreams...scientifically. This ALSO happens to be the same week as the Cincinnati Broadcaster's Dinner and Dance. It's a pretty swank affair...$35 a person and there'll be a trio for dancing. WELCOME BACK!!Jennifer says it at lunch with Herb (yeah, right there should tell you how crazy this one is!!): "Change is exciting, don't you think?"Maybe when it's happening to someone else, but the changes happening around the station are leaving everyone reeling. Herb is looking GOOD in a conservative grey suit. He's also spouting the supply-side doctrine of the new Reagan Administration. Who is this fellow in the nice-looking suit, and what have you done with our Herb??!!But Herb's threads are nothing compared to the outfit Venus assembles. Venus is being interviewed for "Black Life Magazine" about being a black deejay. Venus is worried he's been hanging out with all these white folks for so long, he's not as black as he should be! He blacks things WAY up with the "Root Suit by Monsanto" (ask Johnny).Tom Dreesen shows up playing the Black Life reporter (!) and WE TALK TO HIM!! Tom was kind enough to talk to us about his early days with Tim Reid, his time on WKRP and a whole host of other topics. We're SUPERSIZED! We almost touched the 90-minute mark on this one. If you normally listen to us on the way to work, this week we'll get you there and BACK!! So, depending on how you look at it...enjoy!...or, sorry for being so long-winded! With two great storylines AND Tom Dreesen, there was no way this one wasn't going to run long!Don't miss this fantastic episode, fellow babies! WELCOME BACK!!Amphetamines were outlawed in 1970. It was a Tricky Dick move. He made amphetamines a very-illegal Schedule Two drug. No more bottles of "mother's little helper" available over the counter.By the late 1970s, some intrepid manufacturers of 'diet pills' were concocting concentrated formulations of caffeine, ephedrine and sometimes taurine. It was an attempt to legally create the amphetamine buzz that was so prized by speed-freaks in the '60s.Hundreds of milligrams of caffeine in a concentrated form will get you buzzing....it might even help you lose weight. It will ALSO keep you awake for finals. Hold on a minute...why are middle-aged ladies wanting to lose weight also taking H.S. finals? They aren't. The whole "trucker speed" craze of the '80s was primarily targeted to teens. You could buy all you wanted! They weren't 'real' amphetamines...so what was the harm? You may be wondering what this has to do with the Mighty 'KRP. Turns out Herb found a new advertiser. He was doing his job! He made a sale! Unfortunately, Herb's new buddy, Dave, is running a "weight loss clinic." He's really slinging legal, but very dangerous, 'pep' pills. They'll help you lose weight. They'll also help you pass out in gym class. Not a lot of laughs in this one, but it's a great message and well presented by the gang. Throw back a couple of Black Beauties and "FocusIn", fellow babies...it's time for "Pills."WATCH ALONG DETAILS...[Want to watch along with us? It's a blast!! WELCOME BACK!!Hey, Fellow Babies!! We celebrated our 35th Wedding Anniversary on June 20th. Rather than spend the week working on a new show, we took the week off to celebrate! We didn't want to leave you completely high-and-dry, so we're re-running a romantic favorite: "Patter of Little Feet."We did cut a new intro. We've got a project in the works and we're needing your help. We've decided to do a "Misses and Messes" episode as a capper for the series. Those things we missed, and things we messed up. What have you heard? Go back and listen. Take notes! Big things we missed...or messed...send us the episode title and what we should either add or change. We'll gather them all together and talk about it at the end of the series in September.Hope your summer is going well!! Anniversary Congrats to any other Fellow Babies who might be celebrating the memory of their nuptials (since most weddings happen in the summer). Next week: "Pills". We have one more week of leisurely summer with another re-release over the 4th, then we start a run of new shows all the way through to Labor Day! WELCOME BACK!!Giant Lizzard ravages East Coast!! Les is at it again...a classic Nessman mess up. Once Les gets things sorted out with giant reptiles and winter storms, he tells us about a fire at the Vine Street Mission. Turns out, Dr. Fever is a big supporter of the Mission. He was on sight for a live report right after the fire...kinda.The kitchen at the Mission needs a new roof...to the tune of $40,000! For Johnny, and most mere mortals, this is a big pile of cash. For Ms. Jennifer Marlowe, this amount represents the equivalent of loose change in her friend's couch cushions. She invites them over for a night of appetizers, martinis and money. She also invites "the gang." She should have specified WHICH gang. Johnny brings a few friends from the mission. They meet Jennifer's friends and the party really heats up!You can't move the mission! Not even a foot! Especially not up into Price Hill...there's no bums up there! Although the rich folks want to help, they don't understand the intricacies of feeding the perpetually drunk. Johnny and his friends work to set them straight. Eventually, connections are made via exotic dancing and David Niven...or something like that.Grab a big, steaming bowl of Chicken Gumbo and join us for a night of Zombies, cheese puffs and big donations from some of Cincinnati's finest philanthropists. He's gotten his Letterman Sweater cleaned and he's making reservations at the "Eat 'n Sleep."Meanwhile, Venus is attempting to 'woo' a young lady from a local broadcast school. She seems a bit smarter than Mr. Flytrap's usual conquests. She's also not thrilled about the lack of privacy in the Venus Lovenest...aka The Control Booth. With Art out of town, Venus sees a chance to regale his young lady friend with crab puffs and gherkins galore. When Art and Carmen get to the "Eat 'n Sleep", not much has changed in 25 years. They meet up with Hank "The Hunk" and his flaky wife Fluffy! The "Eat 'n Sleep" was the scene of Art and Carmen's first date. It's a tale Art loves to tell again and again. WELCOME BACK!!Hey, Fellow Babies! We here at the WKRP-Cast have taken the week off for Memorial Day. Since this is an elaborate hobby and doesn't pay much of anything (aside from you Patrons...THANK YOU, Patrons!!) we figured we deserved a week off. But, we didn't want to leave you Fellow Babies hangin'! We wanted to get something new to you, only without putting in the 40+ hours involved in creating a regular episode (and, no exaggeration...more than 40 hours go into EVERY WKRP-Cast! Writing, researching, recording and editing...2 people x 20 hours each. See why you should be donating to Patreon? Patreon.com/WKRPCast. Come on! Join the cool kids!! Only $5 a month). Searching our archives, we realized we've been sitting on a new interview since February. We talked to Eileen Barnett (who played 'Arlene' in the Season 3 episode, "Ask Jennifer")! The problem: we didn't talk to her until after the episode aired. We didn't know what to do with this interview sitting here...then the lightning struck! How about we re-run "Ask Jennifer" only we INCLUDE the Eileen interview?? Have a safe and awesome Memorial Day, Fellow Babies! Enjoy the new stuff...and the re-run. WELCOME BACK!!Andy's good buddy, Norris Breeze, is in Cincinnati! What brings ol' Norris to town? That would be Mama Carlson. Norris has developed a coke habit so he needed a high paying job. He's now a "radio consultant" tasked with making every radio station sound the same from coast to coast.Norris has already been in town a couple of days, monitoring the Mighty 'KRP. Andy gulps hard and starts the wheels turning. How can he discredit "the Radio Doctor" from New York? Oh, Andy's not as 'aw-shucks' as you might think. He has a trick or two up his sleeve. He can't make them competent...but could he make them different? Andy hatches a plan. It involves the whole staff, but you might not recognize them once Andy's done.As Jennifer gets coffee for "Mr. Breezy" some guy in a good-looking suit is claiming to be Herb. This is the Flimm Building, right? Norris takes copious notes, while watching out for Venus and his knife. He can't wait to report it all back to Mama. When he does, Andy just sits quietly with a little grin on his face. Being from Santa Fe, this might not be Mr. Travis' first rodeo. Norris proceeds to describe a station Mama's never seen. Her son is...overworked? No, this is not the WKRP Mama knows. She realizes with a quiet grin how well she's been played. As Hirsch ushers Andy out, he's asking for even MORE money. Mama realizes this Mr. Travis is not one to be trifled with. WELCOME BACK!!Remember way back at the start of Season Four when the Phone Cops blew up the transmitter?? (Or, something like that...gotta stop listening to Johnny). Anyway, insurance said they'd replace the transmitter...at its current value. Its old, and usually broken, current value. Andy decides a Top Ten operation like WKRP should be heard on something nicer than Harris' best AM Transmitter from 1968. He decides the best way to get to the checkbook is around Art. Mama Carlson can authorize additional funds. Andy decides to meet with her...at a nice restaurant. Then again at the opera. He's meeting with her in the trendiest places all over town. Les, intrepid newsman that he is, blows the whistle on the whole sordid seeming-affair. Were Andy and Mrs. C. really an "item"? Are you INSANE?? When confronted with her possible indiscretions, Mama can only say it's what you 'do' with Employees. Besides, Andrew has nice hair. Will Andy get his new transmitter? WELCOME BACK!!Herb's in the Hospital being checked for potential ticker troubles. Whatever the doctor might tell him can't be as bad as the little item he finds in today's paper. Carlson confirms it! [For "Choose Your Own Adventure" Info, See Below...]Hey, Fellow Babies!! The Cincinnati trip was a huge success. We got back just a couple of hours before recording this episode. We had a great time, even if we are a little sore (we walked a LOT!). There's tons of info in this week's show about the trip!! A tip: check the show Facebook page. All you have to do is search "WKRP-Cast" in Facebook and you'll find us. We mention FB posts a LOT in today's show. If you haven't been following our Epic Adventure, you'll want to take a look at some of our posts. Much of the trip was pretty visual, and we did snap a LOT of pix.We also caught up with a couple of interesting guys who have had a LOT to do with WKRP over the years. The first was Bob Gerding. Bob is the local Video Pro who shot the opening and all of the exteriors whenever they needed something out in Studio City. Bob has some GREAT stories from working on the show. THEN we talked to the man who is the dean of Media Reporting in Cincinnati: John Kiesewetter or just "Kiese". Kiese wrote for the Cincinnati Enquirer starting just after WKRP went off network. He followed it through the syndication episodes with the lost music, hacked scenes and awful attempt at a DVD release in 2007. He's talked to every one of the show principles and written about them all multiple times over the years (except maybe Jan). Kiese took us on an incredible tour of Cincinnati looking at it through the lens of WKRP. We'll have full interviews with both of these guys plus a rundown of our four WKRP-Filled days in Cincinnati. Strap in, Fellow Babies...the Cincinnati tour is leaving as soon as you push "play." CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE:Are you ONLY wanting to hear interviews? Only looking for our Cincy Travelogue? Either way, we've got you covered! - Bob Gerding Interview (30 total mins) - Starts at 24 minutes. FF to listen.- John Kiesewetter Interview (39 total mins) - Starts at 1h:04 minutes.- You can hear us being interviewed by Chris & Janeen at 2:00hours. If you're only wanting travelogue, FF past the interviews the specified times.
WELCOME BACK!!It's time to organize, it's time to unionize, it's time to "look for...that union label...".WKRP has had another bit of a ratings surge. The lack of commercials following Dr. Bob's Boycott seems to have attracted listeners. The Mighty KRP is now ranked 10th among all Cincinnati Radio Stations. Art's ready to celebrate with a few raises! While Art's looking for someplace cheap but elegant to hold a company dinner, the rest of the gang is sneaking around whispering about unions. They held a meeting over at WPIG...at least that's what Johnny heard. Herb takes word to the Big Guy: the troops are looking to organize. Once Art hears this, the battle is on! The Big Guy doesn't want a union...but how will he stop it? He decides to consult a higher power...Mama.Will the hob-nailed boot of management be lifted from the necks of KRPs toiling employees? Not if Mama C. has anything to say about it! She's ready to sell the station tomorrow if it goes Union today. Well, maybe...then again, maybe not. Would you want to cross Mama? We need a secret handshake before you're allowed in the meeting. Oh, you've got roses? Sure, come on in! Push 'play' and look up for a message from our sponsor. WELCOME BACK!!You made it back for Part 2! (a lot of people didn't in 1981). In case you need a refresher, we've got a Bomb threat!!Andy dispatched Venus and Johnny to the Transmitter Building in the middle of Part One. The guys are blowing off the dust and trying to keep some tunes on the WKRP Air. Things are...rough. The turntable doesn't want to play and the bookie doesn't want to talk. Wing, Johnny's Chinese Bookie and Restauranteur, put Johnny on hold just minutes before the biggest hunch bet of his life was at the post. 'Fever's Dream', an 80 to 1 long shot was screaming to Johnny for a bet. If only he can make it in time. When the horse came through...but the bookie didn't...Johnny takes his frustrations out on the phone. Three quick whacks with the big metal toolbox left Ma Bell's Magic Device in tiny shards of psychedelic spaghetti. At the end of last week's show, Andy realizes the bomb might be out at the transmitter instead of in the Flimm Building. But how do you contact the guys when the phone is in pieces on the floor? Call their cell?? Sorry, this is 1981. Put down that Toolbox and push "play"!! It's time for an EXPLOSIVE WKRP-Cast Conclusion!WATCH ALONG DETAILS...[Want to watch along with us? It's a blast!! WELCOME BACK!!It's a busy day around the Mighty 'KRP!! Joyce Armor, the woman who used to have Jennifer's job, has returned, The usual round of complaints about Johnny have arrived, Venus and Johnny are gambling in the Control Room and oh, yeah...there's a bomb threat.Bomb threat? Excuse me!!Andy says its normal for a newly popular station to get these kinds of things. Everyone would figure it's a hoax if it weren't for John Davidson having his show blown up over on Channel 73 in Dayton. Just to be safe, let's call the Bomb Squad and see if they can bring over some bomb sniffing dogs (oh, sorry...didn't mean to bring up a sore subject). A SPECIAL INTERVIEW!! Hey there, Fellow Babies! If you're a fan of WKRP at all (and if you're listening to this podcast, we're guessing you are) you've probably seen the name "Max Tash" in the credits. It's the first name listed over the nighttime city shots when the "Went to a Bartender" closing theme begins. Picturing it in your head? Max was working for WKRP from before the beginning. He was an MTM "runner/gopher" on the production while casting was happening. He was production associate in the first season, Associate Producer in Seasons 2 and 3, then Coordinating Producer in the 4th Season. He was there for all 88 episodes...all the way through to "Up and Down the Dial." Only Hugh Wilson has his name in the credits of WKRP more times than Max Tash. Max was kept pretty busy with production duties, but during his tenure with WKRP, he did write a single episode. Max came up with the much-loved "Clean Up Radio Everywhere" episode featuring Dr. Bob Halyer (Hallier? Halyers?), the Jerry Falwell-like preacher who is ready to clean up Cincinnati radio.Max has been a friend of the podcast since our first few weeks. Via e-mail, he's supplied us with some great details as we've been working our way through the episodes. Max was happy to answer e-mail questions but, although we've asked a few times, Max has never agreed to speak with us for an interview. When we told him we just HAD to have his comments about "CURE" he said, "oh, okay."So get ready fellow babies...Heeeeere's Max! We talked to Max for more than an hour...and barely scratched the surface of the millions of stories he has tucked away. He is a wealth of knowledge about the show, about Hugh Wilson...about everything WKRP! We hope we can talk Max into another session with us at the end of the series. Either way, here is the incredible Max Tash, with information about "CURE", "The Famous Teddy Z", "Frank's Place", The Pussy Cat Theater (!) and a WHOLE lot more. WELCOME BACK!!Dr. Bob Halyers (Halliers? Halyer?) has come to WKRP with one thing on his mind: cleaning up the airwaves!! Dr. Bob is the head of "Clean Up Radio Broadcasting" aka CURB. WELCOME BACK!!Johnny is filling in for Moss Steiger, the overnight guy. The Doctor is either hung over or dealing with a bad cold. Either way, he's wandering around the station with a towel over his head completely oblivious to the ROBBERY taking place in the station! The next day, the gang finds all the valuables are gone...the phones, Art's hobby equipment, even Les' typewriter! The only rational response is to install a burglar alarm...which The Big Guy does immediately!!Okay, so not IMMEDIATELY...but it'll be in by Friday. Which happens to be the same day as Herb's big shindig for Cincinnati Ad Agencies! He's gone all out...banquet room in the Flimm, catering, a coat check girl with legs to her shoulders...everything you need for the perfect Friday night. If you've been paying attention...or you know ANYTHING AT ALL about sitcoms...you know the burglar alarm and the party are going to combine for a hilarious evening. Or, possibly, an evening filled with John Donne quotes and firearms. With the crazy cats who show up at Herb's party, anything could happen!!Have you met Hilda? IMDb seems to have missed her, but she's very sweet. The olives spell out WKRP and there's a handgun pointed at Andy's head!! If we told you any more we might spoil the big surprise in Art's Office!! HEY, FELLOW BABIES!! Welcome to a Special Release from the WKRP-Cast!In order to improve your performance as a deejay, it was important to hear yourself on the air. The process of recording yourself and listening back to your show was called doing an "air check." Usually, a Program Director would require on-air staff to air-check themselves anywhere from once a week to once a month. After a jock has air-checked their show, they would sit down with the PD and critique the content. They might discuss anything from what headlines or news bits the talent selected as talk topics to presentation to attitude to verbal tics. For instance, Johnny says "alright" an awful lot. A good PD would point something like that out and have him work on being aware of it and reducing how many times he says it.Since an air-check is about the deejay, there was no need for a PD to sit through a lot of music. They only wanted to hear the performer's bits and intros. This is where the "skimmer" or "air check machine" came into play. A skimmer was a cassette deck in the control room taking a feed from the program 'out' of the board. Everything coming off the board went through the skimmer. The on-off switch for the skimmer was connected to the board mic switch. When the deejay turned on the mic, the skimmer started recording. Whatever was happening at the moment the mic was turned on would be captured on the skim tape. It might be the end of a song, the last few words of a spot, the final sign-off from a newscast, etc. The skimmer would then record whatever the deejay says while the mic is on. As soon as the deejay turned the mic off, the skimmer would stop. A deejay doesn't normally turn the mic off immediately after they stop talking. This meant the skimmer might capture the first few bars of the next song or a few words of the first spot played in the next stop set. At the end of a shift, the skim tape would only contain whatever the deejay had said throughout the four or five hours of their show. A lot of deejays would keep these air-check tapes, especially when they had a good shift. Air-check tapes are not only a great tool for the Program Director to use, they are also a fantastic tool for a deejay to use to land another job.We decided to create Dr. Johnny Fever's air-check. This is a collection of only those things Johnny has said OVER THE AIR while on WKRP. It's edited the same way an air-check or skim tape would have sounded in the 1980s, with no fades and beep tones between segments. We've pulled every Johnny talk bit from Pilot Part One all the way through to "Simple Little Wedding." Once we've completed the series, we will add any additional segments Johnny might do in Episodes 66-90. Enjoy this WKRP-Cast Tribute to the Legendary Howard Hesseman and his incredible creation: Dr. Johnny Fever.
WELCOME BACK!!Imagine Mama Carlson is your mother. Now imagine having her help you plan your wedding. Carmen couldn't take it at first...all the way back in 1956. She and Arthur eloped just to get away from "the Boss." Carmen never had a "real" wedding ceremony. Twenty-five years later, Carmen's still not happy about spending time with Mama, but she and Art are planning a real ceremony to celebrate their 25th Wedding Anniversary. They visit Mama Carlson hoping for her blessing...and a "hands off" approach to helping. Also, as the title of the episode says, they want to keep it simple. Mama says she's mellowed over the years. If this is mellow, we'd rather not see her before the mellowing took place!! Mama says she agrees to Art and Carmen's requests...in voice, maybe, but certainly not in spirit. Meanwhile, back at the station Herb has called a couple of strippers who he happens to have in his Rolodex. We meet a new recurring character and he is a HOOT! This is our first interaction with "Hirsch", Mama's long-suffering butler. Talk about a love-hate relationship...with a heavy emphasis on the "hate".So, are you Bride's side or Groom's side? Is Senator Taft here?? Uh, no...I think he's dead. Maybe I could get you a Silver Bullet Cocktail...shaken, not stirred? We don't want to disrupt the nuptials, which is why, before the strippers get here, you need to push "play". We'll enjoy something old, something new, something seedy...and vibrating, too!!WATCH ALONG DETAILS...[Want to watch along with us? It's a blast!! RIP-Howard Hesseman: We didn't have a chance to add anything to the episode, but we did want to take a moment to mention the passing of Howard "Dr. Johnny Fever" Hesseman on Jan. 29th of 2022. He was 81 years old. WELCOME BACK!!Everyone knows the wheels of commerce are greased by a steady flow of cocktails. At least, if you're Herb Tarlek, it's how things work. Herb has been on a sales binge for nearly a month now...which means he's also been on a drinking binge. We've got Herb quoting Rip Tide and hiding big bottles of expensive looking bourbon in his bottom desk drawer. Okay, so it's an expensive looking bottle. The bourbon...not so much. Herb has been downgrading the brew with some cheap stuff and a funnel. His clients don't seem to mind.Herb may or may not have a problem. Okay...yeah...he's got a problem. Without lecturing, Art gives Herb a pretty effective lecture. Herb realizes things may not be as "okey-fine" as he thinks. He decides to try to correct his course before it's all gotten completely out of hand. Like any good After School Special, we learn the big lesson in the third act. Then everyone goes home happy and better off than they were before the whole thing started. Well, Craig T. Nelson might not be better off...but we won't have to worry about him next week! You look a little green. Would you just hit "play" before you pass out, already?? WELCOME BACK!!If you're Les Nessman, you know how important it is to stay vigilant. Commies are everywhere!! Pinkos, and other ne'er-do-wells who would undo our great democracy must be vigilantly repelled...even if one of them happens to be your own father! This is an amazing story to take on in a single half hour of television. They threw in a lot of jokes...we've got a hilariously slapstick "B"-story involving Venus, Johnny and a studio project. We've got Jennifer preparing for Paris in the Springtime with a riotously off-kilter collection of travel phrases. You've never seen these in High School French Class! Then, as you're laughing along at these great running gags, you suddenly realize you've been hit right in the heart with a gut-wrenching performance from an on-fire Richard Sanders. Or maybe it's ANOTHER gut-wrenching performance of some note courtesy of the guy who's playing Les' dad...Les' real dad...not Lester Nessman, Sr. Get ready for an under-appreciated gem in the WKRP episode bag. WELCOME BACK!!Somebody needs to save The Flimm!! The owners of the landmark Osgood R. Flimm building, located in downtown Cincinnati, have decided it's time for an upgrade. The 50 year old Art-Deco structure is scheduled for demolition...according to the Registered Letter Art got in today's mail. The gang is outraged...livid...but, hey, we're talking Real Estate Mega-bucks, so what're ya gonna do??Bailey decides she's not going to take this lying down...or sitting still or standing by...she's a bit drunk. Her directions are a bit confused. The Campaign to Save the Flimm is ON! WKRP is the nerve center. Bailey is in charge while Jennifer is supporting the effort with her heretofore unknown typing skills!! The lady can TYPE! (just not for Herb!!)Will the Flimm be saved? Will Bailey pass out after her next Old Fashioned?? Will Art finally concentrate and finish an editorial?? WELCOME BACK!!Herb had a good idea (no, seriously...he did!!!) He suggested a call-in advice show. They're sweeping the nation! His buddy in St. Louis had all kinds of great stories about great ratings, winning timeslots...how could they NOT??Finding the right host proves to be a challenge. Depending on how you count it up, it took them either five and a half months or a full year to find the perfect advice lady...her name is Arlene. Once they've found her, it only takes a day or two for "Ask Arlene" to be up and running on the station. The day of the big launch, Arlene has a bit of a mishap involving three Valium. Jennifer steps up as "Arlene" to answer caller questions. Wow, Ms. Marlowe is GOOD at this!! She winds up taking calls for...oh, who really knows how long? It's a while, we know that. Everything is fun and games until one of Jennifer's bits of advice may have gotten someone hurt. It's a fun show with a big message. WE'RE back (and a Happy New Year to ya!) and ready to catch you up on the exploits of Cincinnati's hottest new TV host with the most. So, when we left you last time, things were pretty rosy for the good Doctor. His "Rip Tide" persona saved his contract breaching butt just before airtime. Now, he's having a blast letting his ID run wild in the form of his alter-ego, sleazeball creation. How far will Rip go? How far will Johnny LET him go? WELCOME BACK!!Johnny needs money...so what else is new? Big difference today, Johnny's picked up a side gig! He's been tapped to host a new Teen Dance show in the Cincinnati market!! (Hold on...Johnny FEVER? Dance Party?) Yeah, this one looked questionable from the start!!Johnny may have been persuaded by the pretty face hiding a shark of a producer named Avis. Avis lured Johnny in with too much Champagne and too few clothes. He signed a fairly ironclad contract. It wasn't until WAY too late he discovered this whole "dance" scene had nothing to do with Rock-n-Roll. It was all about the hated DISCO!! Johnny's back is to the wall. If he doesn't get his sequined booty on the "Gotta Dance" stage he will be sued back to the Stone Age. Have no fear, the Ripper is here!! Johnny creates an "alter-ego" he calls "Rip Tide." Rip saves the day and becomes a HIT in Cincinnati. The kids can't get enough of the sad-eyed, middle-aged man in the clown suit who plays the disco hits!! The original DF&MT was a full hour the night it premiered. It was broken into two half hours for syndication. In the interest of our sanity, and to keep you from slogging through a two-hour podcast, we're breaking it down, too. This is PART ONE! Got your skates laced up? Spandex on? WELCOME BACK!!We meet WKRP's cleaning lady, Cora...and she's got a problem. Her "little boy" Arnold just isn't all that into school. He's 16 and finding more success on the streets than in the classroom. Cora has turned to Venus Flytrap for his advice and help. Could he maybe have a talk with young Arnold?Young Arnold turns out to be a middle-aged man...but we'll have to overlook that for the story. He's just as big, tricky and mean as his mama said. He also does NOT understand chemistry. Venus bets Arnold he can get Arnold to understand the atom in two minutes. What happens next is one of the most amazing chemistry lessons ever aired on a sitcom. It won a Humanitas Award for script writer Hugh Wilson. It's also a pretty darn good piece of visual learning and metaphor. Push "play" and join us in the storeroom as Professor Venus takes center stage. WELCOME BACK!!There's been an accident at the Tarlek home!! The kids are fine...so's Lucille. No, the victim of this tragedy is Greenpeace. Not ringing a bell? Greenpeace is the name of Bunny's pet frog. She's become something of an environmentalist at the tender age of 9. Greenpeace got in the way of Herb's cabinet painting and wound up...pink. There's no 911 for Frogs! The vet won't even make a house call. Herb decides to bring his sad little shoe box with the holes cut in the top into work hoping for...something. Can one of the gang help Herb with some magical frog resuscitation? Not likely, but we're game to watch them give it a try!Greenpeace gets doused with coffee water, prodded by a podiatrist and ultimately expires on Herb's desk. The speech is tonight, but Art is trying to back out. Andy, with a little help from Jennifer, convinces the Big Guy to give his speech in front of the troops to bolster his confidence. It's a pretty boring speech. Sorry, Art...but, wow! Snoozerino! Venus is doing standup and Johnny is a whacked out rockstar (more whacked out than usual). The whole gang gets a chance to live their fantasies. WELCOME BACK!!Sunday night was the big Charity Auction at Art Carlson's church. On Monday morning we find that only Bailey and Herb were in attendance. ONLY Herb bought anything...a painting. Herb didn't buy it because he likes it. He was just looking for some kudos from the Big Guy. Now Herb is out a hundred bucks, he's got a painting he doesn't like and his best buddy Les, who was supposed to split it with him, got called away to Dayton! What's a salesman to do? How about sell the painting?? He sells it to EVERYBODY! Bailey, who loved it on Sunday but didn't buy, decides she has to have it. Wait a minute...it might actually be valuable!! Should Herb sell?
