Dennis continues his conversation with TV writer Stan Zimmerman, author of the memoir The Girls: From Golden to Gilmore. In Part 2, Stan talks about working on the Gilmore Girls and learning to write dialogue in the show's unique, fast-paced style. He also talks about the humiliating T-shirt gift he got from Roseanne and Tom Arnold while working on Roseanne, taking random meetings with icons like Diana Ross, Goldie Hawn, Joan Collins and Pia Zadora, being a judge/mentor on the Bravo reality show Situation: Comedy, getting into playwriting and directing theater later in his career and going to Russia to work on the Russian Roseanne and meeting sexy Russians on the gay app Hornet. Other topics include: the holiday movie he wrote for Donna Mills, Loni Anderson, Nicolette Sheridan, Morgan Fairchild and Linda Gray, going to Studio 54 and telling Andy Warhol to stop taking his picture, his natural optimism, the thrill of having his beloved mother come to tapings, and why he wore glasses to pitch meetings when he didn't actually need them. After the interview, Dennis recalls his epic 60th birthday weekend.
If you love the 80s, you're probably enjoying this season of Fanacek. If you don't , well suck it up and let me educate you. This week I'm discussing 80s actors who could have made a run at big screen stardom, but they knew damn well that television is where they belonged. What they lacked in feature film potential, they made up for in self awareness. Follow me down this road as I wax poetic about such folks as John Stamos, Erin Gray, Suzanne Somers, Loni Anderson, Richard Dean Anderson and The Hoff himself, David Hasselhoff. Enjoy, suckas!

This week, the team welcomes a guest from across the pond, as writer, comedian and podcaster Chelsea Devantez ignores the time difference to bring us a couple who are the epitome of late 80s glamour and glitz - plus a firm favourite of Chantal's - it's Burt Reynolds and Loni Anderson! On paper this couple had everything, but behind the scenes it was a different story with some rather dark moments to boot. But what would a night out with this pair be like and was that famous moustache a third wheel in this doomed love story? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This week on It Was a Thing on TV First, in Episode 459, Hugh Wilson and Loni Anderson worked together on a popular series in the late 70s and early 80s, WKRP in Cincinnati. They tried to parlay that magic into another series four years after WKRP's end, one where a former showgirl, played by Anderson, married her wealthy husband, who died. When you're battling family members who want that money, life isn't so easy on Easy Street. Then in Episode 460, the annual Lost in Translation episodes start with another British adaptation of a beloved American sitcom. Despite American scripts being localized for a UK audience, Days Like These didn't click. Maybe it needed a catchy phrase in its opening like "Hello Luton!" Les, Kurt, and Jason are ready to dissect a Lifetime movie that SHOULD hit the sweet spot, Lifetime's Ladies of the 80's a Divas Christmas starring Morgan Fairchild, Nicolette Sheridan, Donna Mills, Loni Anderson, Linda Gray, and Christopher Adkins. But first, we get the Blac Chyna news that she and Tyga are now getting along and sharing joint custody of their son. Kumbaya. Then, the guys test whether or not THEY are as powerful as a Siskel and Ebert review that once got Alen Zweibel's son bullied as they dig into this week's movie. Even stacked with so many 80's icons, this movie's many lapses in simple logic make it a rough watch that needed more actual tension between the characters that's not even saved by using (potentially) scalding hot gravy in a food fight and winning an Emmy by showing one's gray hair. Hopefully it's a better week for that 80s Show than it's been for That 70s Show and appropriately Dori takes us to the 90s. We talk about 80s things selling for a lot of money, 80s things that lost a lot of money, a movie that may or may not have been broadcast on Red Nose Day, Burt Reynolds being inappropriate with Loni Anderson and how Priscilla Presley inspired Depeche Mode. Everything we discuss in this show can be found on @That80sShowSA on Facebook.
In the late 1980's and early '90s, the TV sitcom landscape was dominated by an unstoppable force known as Witt/Thomas/Harris Productions. It's the creative juggernaut that brought us Soap and Benson in the late 70s, evolving into the force field behind The Golden Girls. A series so iconic, it launched the spin-offs, Nurses, The Golden Palace and Empty Nest, co-starring our guest, David Leisure. This Saturday night lineup featured casts of characters who occupied the same imagined universe and often popped into each other's shows. David was Empty Nest's wacky neighbor and he also appeared as Charley Dietz on The Golden Girls, Nurses and another Witt/Thomas/Harris creation, Blossom.Empty Nest, starred Richard Mulligan as Dr. Harry Weston, a widowed pediatrician, much sought after by all the Miami single ladies while riding the emotional waves of his grownup daughters who have refilled his Empty Nest.David gives us an exclusive peek behind the scenes of this memorable time in broadcast television history. Was Bea Arthur really the only Earth human who hated Betty White? What did Bea Arthur hate even more than Betty White? How did David's show attempt to fill the space left behind in their nest by Kristy McNichol? How did the cast and crew react to her emotional return?David shares his origin story and how he landed two key roles. 1) “First Krishna” in Airplane. (He was willing to shave his head.) And 2) The Joe Isuzu commercials. (He's an obsequious liar.)We also learn why St. Jude's hospital is so important to David, how he overcame childhood obesity and the truth about his secret, backstage divorce group therapy sessions with Loni Anderson and Richard Mulligan. All that plus IMDB Roulette and Empty Nest Trivia! And Fritz shares his own personal run-in with Golden Girls Producer Susan Harris. (She's probably still pissed.) Dennis is joined via Zoom by actor-writer-director Craig Chester to discuss the upcoming 18th Anniversary screening of his gay rom-com Adam and Steve, which is happening on August 31st at the Mary Pickford Theater in Palm Springs. Craig shares memories of making the movie, including how he had to take over as director just a few weeks before filming, how he burst into tears after shooting the film's big, show-stopping western-themed dance number and what it was like to work with Malcolm Gets, Parker Posey and Chris Kattan. He also talks about his career as a TV writer, working on the series True Blood--where an episode he wrote pissed off both Ted Cruz and Sarah Palin--and he also shares his thoughts on the current writers strike. Dennis and Craig also share memories of working together on Logo's The Big Gay Sketch Show in 2009. Craig also opens up about his journey to sobriety last year after losing virtually everything to crystal meth addiction. Other topics include: the power of dream boarding, the wisdom of Wilson Phillips, living in a 55+ community in Palm Springs, oversharing on Facebook, how getting Monkey Pox saved his life, getting help when he really needed it from folks like Stephen King, Jackie Beat, Illeana Douglas and Kate McKinnon, what it was like to be a 90's indie darling in films like Swoon, Grief and Frisk, and how he sometimes feels like a gay Forrest Gump.

Hey Listener, gas up your Delorean, because this week we're going back in time with Chris Pearce to talk about WKRP in Cincinnati. He is an avid fan of television series from a bygone era and an educator that works pop culture into his classroom. Topics this week include: It wouldn't be WYI? Without a botched intro by your host. Documenting your career through comics. The joy of being a teacher in the Summer. Twitter sucks, a recurring theme of the show. Alien the High School Play and Aliens on Ice! I just want to chill on my couch and game. The jump from radios to HD televisions. Scouring the dollar bins with a wide net collector. Hey, slow down when you're reading. A dude that knows multiple people who are trying to complete the entire run of Conan the Barbarian. Trying to know as much as you can about a TV series. NBC rules Thursday night. WKRP characters in one word. The MayTag repair man. Burnout and people that can wear sunglasses inside. Redneck Terminator. Dunkin' on Dayton. Ohio talk. NYC talk. Loni Anderson. Marrying the Bandit and a good run. Herb meets HR in 2023. The Other Gal. Sharing WKRP with high school students. The Who and Cincinnati. That time your host forgets what Gummo is called. Rollerball font. Yeah, this is the show. Full on bored. The heavy lifting of MASH. The Cosby Show now. Regionalism. Chris still has cable and wouldn't mind sitting through it. How do you take in a new show? We love Oz. Night of the Living Dead. American Zombie. The Golden Retriever of TV shows. Baby Billy's Bible Bonkers.

Sorry, Wrong Number and its different iterations will be the focus of this episode. It is one of my favorite films, in fact, the radio play it is based on is in heavy rotation in my car. In preparation for this episode, I have been attempting to lock down the reasons behind my deep admiration for this story and film. My first introduction to the story is the Murder, She Wrote episode from season 3 called Crossed Up. This episode is based on the original film—many Murder She Wrote episodes are re-boots of classic movies. We will get into my love of Murder She Wrote and specifically this episode in the show. Then came the made-for-TV movie starring Loni Anderson in 1989. We will also spend significant time on that gem, especially given her character's name is Madelaine. I also failed to mention by name the costume designer and set dec team of the Murder, She Wrote episode I cover this week. Robert Wingo and Leslie Parsons were the set dec/ production designing team on this episode. Al Lehman did the costumes.
This week on the Exciting and New Podcast, Jason, Andy & Brian welcome back the patron saint of the podcast (4th time), Burt Reynolds, as he does everything possible to destroy his once legendary career in the 1983 comedy(?) race movie, Stroker Ace. Loni Anderson is along for the ride fresh off WKRP, with this career killer. If you're fan of Jim Nabor's warbling this movie might be for you. Enjoy all the terrible teeth in hi-def in this classic.
“Gabby has fired you”. For many people, being fired as the assistant to a Dog may have ended their career. But not the guest on this episode of Big Conversations, Little Bar. Writer, actor, TV therapist and big winner on Scrabble Terry Ray talks with Patrick Evans and Randy Florence.Terry has gone on to write 11 TV Movies, an award-winning short Film and the longest running play in Palm Springs. That play, Electricity, will be moving off-Broadway in the very near future. Terry's career seems to have been one story after another (all of them, except with Gabby, very successful). Honestly, do any others have stories of meeting with Batman while he was getting ready and still in his tighty-whities? Terry has Patrick and Randy gasping for air as he tells more about his days as a student of Charles Nelson Reilly, writing a show that starred Loni Anderson and doing TV therapy for some of the most iconic characters in TV (think Eddie Munster, Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island, Isaac from the Love Boat). You'll become a huge fan of Terry's after listening to his infectious and hilarious personality!
The Spin Chagrin, a concept that finds Frank having to watch a movie he's never seen before based on the random spin of a wheel filled with off-the-wall genres, continues into a new year. In this episode, Frank's category was "Ninjas Attack 7: Ruthless Aggression," where Frank had to watch a ninja movie with a professional wrestler that wrestled at some point during WWE's Ruthless Aggression era. He choose 3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain, starring Hulk Hogan along with Jim Varney, Loni Anderson, and Victor Wong.

He's not just a humble man with gray hair, an old Goodyear hat, and red suspenders, Will Cronkrite is a former NASCAR crew chief and car owner full of amazing stories that Dale Earnhardt Jr. wants the world to hear. His #96 car gave Dale Earnhardt what many consider to be his big break in NASCAR and Dale Jr. gets the low-down on how it all happened. As a "scrawny kid" he stood in his father's truck at Cronkrites shop as they readied the car for the World 600, a part of Dale Jr.'s life that Will brings to life in this fascinating conversation. The story was so much more! How did Willy T. Ribbs and Humpy Wheeler help create a chance that would springboard The Intimidator's career? Cronkrite details the early days of a father and NASCAR Hall of Famer.Cronkrite's life changed with the tragic death of his wife and children. It was at this moment that everything pivoted to Auto Racing. He took his intense work ethic and desire from the cornfields of Ohio, to Indianapolis, and eventually the top-ranks of NASCAR. Along the way, he worked with legendary drivers like Benny Parsons, David Pearson, Donnie Allison, Mark Martin, Ricky Rudd, and more. He also worked around some characters, like tough Minnesotan Joe Frasson. Cronkrite shares a crash story for the ages with Frasson, bloodied, insisting on Cronkrite taping his hand to the steering wheel. Before he arrived in the southern stock car world, Cronkrite experienced a different side of racing in the Chicagoland area. He reveals how things were different in racing up there and how he was rewarded with diamonds for good performance. He also tells the tale of a gruesome fight that led to jail time and the fear of what was to happen when he was sprung by a "connected" individual involved in the racing operation. It's a story you have to hear to believe.Cronkrite talks about many racing topics from DiGard Racing, to working with a gutsy racing pioneer named Janet Guthrie. He also shares stories from his months working on the hit Burt Reynolds movie Stroker Ace, including when Dale Sr. shook down the Chicken Pit Special.
