What's up, dudes? When people talk about the classics of Thanksgiving television, they always talk about the WKRP in Cincinatti's "Turkeys Away" episode! My bud Vinnie Brezinsky from Huey and Bax joins me to gab--or is it gobble?--about this classic turkey drop! The station is running so smoothly that Carlson is feeling useless and left out. He pries into everyone else's projects, angering and annoying them in the process. Consequently, he decides to take matters into his own hands. He clandestinely plans a secret Thanksgiving Day publicity stunt. During disc jockey Johnny Fever's segment, on-the-scene reporter Les Nessman gives live commentary of the spectacle. Actually, debacle is the correct term, because the stunt involved Carlson and Herb throwing live turkeys into the unsuspecting crowd from a helicopter. People run from the turkey bombs just as Johnny cuts the feed. Finally, Carlson, Herb, and Les return to the station and detail the horrific affair.Based on a true story, this episode has comedy in spades! Drug references? Yep. Absurd ideas from incompetent bosses? Check. Turkeys hitting the pavement like sacks of wet cement? Definitely! So grab your microphone, hop in your chopper, and fly off into this episode about the classic WKRP Turkey Drop!Check us out on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Totally Rad Christmas Mall & Arcade, Teepublic.com, or TotallyRadChristmas.com! This TRIBUTE TO CAS WALKER episode will no doubt hit the mark for older hunters that remember Cas' ads in Full Cry magazines over a span of many years. But everyone, no matter the age, should love the stories contained in this episode told by one of Cas' closest associates, David West, a man that played in his tv show band and was his personal driver for many years. The stories are amazing! How Cas helped Dolly Parton get her start. How Cas fired the Everly Brothers from his show. How Cas lost a finger in a fight and retaliated by biting off his opponent's ear. How he buried a man alive for 10 days in front of his store and how “Dog Dipping Day” grossed several thousands of dollars in grocery sales. And there's the story of how Cas was the originator of the turkey drop stunt that became tv show WKRP In Cincinnati's most famous episode. The story of Walker's coon dog-selling technique alone is worth the listen and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Funny, funny stuff!

Following his 1995 crime epic 'Heat', Michael Mann was in a position to do most any film he desired to do. So when Disney Studios ponied up north of 90 million dollars to help him bring a thorny, wordy, action-free journalism picture to life, they probably reasonably expected a 'All The President's Men' for a new generation. And while their efforts garnered 7 Oscar nominations, the film disappointed at the box office in part due to the difficulty in communicating to prospective viewers exactly what the film was about. And pointedly, Mann cast Pacino and Crowe exactly BECAUSE he planned to use them as they'd never been seen before. Audiences expecting Crowe to break apart a desk as he'd done in 'LA Confidential' or for Pacino to embody Satan a la 'The Devil's Advocate' were instead confronted with something quite different. Pacino as facile, intelligent man of the media. Australian-born Crowe playing a man 23 years older than him, a man with a complex speaking voice equal parts The Bronx, Japan, and Kentucky..but no part Australian. A fictionalized account of a true story, 'The Insider' is based on the battle surrounding a 60 Minutes segment about Jeffrey Wigand, a whistleblower in the tobacco industry, in particular covering his and CBS producer Lowell Bergman's struggles as they defend his testimony against efforts to discredit and suppress it by both inside business interests within CBS and by Wigand's former employer, the powerful Brown & Williamson tobacco company. In this episode, I talk about the making of this film, its extraordinary technical accomplishments, and the fantastic leading performances from Crowe, Pacino, and Christopher Plummer as 60 Minutes correspondent Mike Wallace. We hear from Mann and Crowe about the film, and play some surprising sound drops highlighting some of the twists and turns that the film presents. Also covered: 'Miami Vice', WKRP In Cincinnati's Andy Travis and his unlikely cameo in 'The Insider', Animal House's D-Day in maybe the best scene in the whole of 'The Insider', supporting work from Colm Feore, Gina Gershon, Phillip Baker Hall, and MORE!
On episode 55, Greg is joined by the iconic and amazingly talented multihyphenate MICHAEL DES BARRES!!!Michael Des Barres' arrival in the entertainment world came early – as a Marquis attending boarding school in England, he first started acting at age eight in commercials and school plays. He later moved on to Corona Theatre School in West London where he was cast in the 1967 classic film To Sir With Love, starring Sidney Poitier. At nineteen, Michael played the androgynous rock star Rose in the nude musical The Dirtiest Show In Town, produced by Robert Stigwood, of Jesus Christ Superstar fame. Andrew Lloyd Webber saw Michael's performance and went backstage to tell Michael that he should indeed form a real rock band. Michael quickly wrote his first song titled “Will You Finance My Rock and Roll Band” which he performed for Lloyd Webber, that song lead Michael to form Silverhead, his first band, a raucous glam rock experiment. They were immediately signed to Purple Records in 1972. In 1974 Michael married his girlfriend of seven years actress Wendy Hamilton (Professor Emeritus Wendy Wheeler, London Metropolitan University). After two albums and two world tours Silverhead disbanded and Michael moved to Los Angeles broke and in love with Pamela Miller "Miss Pamela" of the GTO's, he arrived in L.A. with two hundred dollars and a hair dryer, ending his marriage to Wendy Hamilton. Michael married Pamela Des Barres, author of “I'm With The Band” in 1977. Michael and Pamela amicably divorced in 1991 and have one son, Nicholas Dean Des Barres. In Los Angeles Michael formed the band Detective. Detective was signed to the famed Swan Song Records by Jimmy Page and recorded two albums. That era also saw Michael appear on U.S. television in the sitcom WKRP In Cincinnati with Detective playing the punk rock group Scum of the Earth. Michael's character, Dog was featured throughout the episode and the band itself played at the end of the show. The members of Detective went their separate ways in 1979. Throughout the years of Silverhead and Detective Michael had been struggling with drugs and alcohol and in 1981 he finally got sober and has remained so. "People didn't understand why I didn't drink or do drugs in the 80's, I was a pariah, but I understood that it was for kids. It was making me psychotic and it was destroying my natural energy. It made me listless and uncreative and I thought that was unacceptable. It was more important to be able to look into my son's eyes and be able to connect with him, than it was to look in the eyes of some lower companion with bad coke." As a result of his sobriety he co-founded R.A.D, Rock Against Drugs, a highly successful P.S.A. that helped enthuse the culture of MTV with an anti-drug status. In 1982 Michael formed the band Chequered Past, featuring Steve Jones, Clem Burke, Nigel Harrison and Tony Sales. The band opened for Duran Duran in 1984, it was this association that led to Michael being chosen to replace Robert Palmer as lead singer of The Power Station when Robert Palmer withdrew. Michael performed with The Power Station in Philadelphia at Live Aid before two billion people after a ten day rehearsal. A highlight of the touring set was Michael's song “Obsession, cowritten with Holly Knight in 1983. At the time, it had been released by the L.A. based New Wave group Animotion and was a number one hit in twenty-seven countries. Michael's love of acting had never subsided and in 1985 he was cast in the role most familiar to his fans – that of...

The program stuck around for four seasons (90 episodes) and featured one helluva soundtrack! This week on RITY, I'll be playing songs from Seasons 1 & 2. Next week, I'll cover Seasons 3 & 4... This week Val and Rachel discuss two radio workplace sitcoms from different eras: Newsradio and WKRP in Cincinnati. NewsRadio is an American sitcom television series that aired on NBC from March 21, 1995 to May 4, 1999, focusing on the work lives of the staff of a New York City AM news radio station. It had an ensemble cast featuring Dave Foley, Stephen Root, Andy Dick, Maura Tierney, Vicki Lewis, Joe Rogan, Khandi Alexander, Jon Lovitz, and Phil Hartman in his final regular role before his death in 1998. WKRP in Cincinnati is an American sitcom television series that features the misadventures of the staff of a struggling fictional radio station in Cincinnati, Ohio. The show was created by Hugh Wilson and was based upon his experiences working in advertising sales at Top 40 radio station WQXI in Atlanta. Many of the characters and even some of the stories (including that of the Season 1 episode "Turkeys Away") are based on people and events at WQXI. Wilson once told The Cincinnati Enquirer that he selected WKRP as the call sign to stand for C-R-A-P. Hot Topics include: 1.) Gardening & landscaping updates 2.) Time slot shenanigans 3.) Contemporary criticism of Newsradio 4.) The final haunted season after Phil Hartman's death 5.) The kookiest co-workers we've ever had 6.) Bailey and Jennifer: The Ginger and Mary Ann of the 70s 7.) The WKRP very special concert episode 8.) Adjacent TV, MAD Magazine, The Most 90s 9.) Cute v. pretty, Katherine with a K 10.) Radio DJ Quiz!!! 11.) The Metal World recently lost two important figures named Johnny. Mr. Johnny "Z" Zuzula was the founder/owner of the mighty Megaforce Records. The upstart label released a number of excellent albums that helped shape us as fans of our beloved genre. We also lost actor Howard Hessemen. For our more mature listeners, Hessemen will be best known as "Doctor" Johnny Fever on the awesome "WKRP In Cincinnati" sitcom aired from '78-'82. The Doctor was a major influence on the creation of Radioactive Metal. So this week we thought it would be best to pay tribute to these Johnnies. First with discussing some of our fave Megaforce albums/songs. As well, we reminisce some of our fave episodes/moments on the mighty "...K.R.P." In our "News, Views, and Tunes", we discuss Meatloaf (RIP) and menstrual cycles(!), the whole Rogan/Young spotify thing, and the new/classic Slaughter album! Musically we crank new and used from Exciter, MOD ClassicTK, Pupil Slicer, Abhoria, Solicitor, the aforementioned Slaughter, and introduce Swearwolf in our "Indie Spotlight". Most casual John Lennon fans pick “Sometime In NYC” as their favorite solo album (hashtag Attica State). But for us die-hards, "Imagine" ranks as either #1 or #2. This week, Tony & T.J. consider this seminal record on its 50th anniversary, looking at the album's history and the immense staying power of its title track. (You “It's So Hard” fans will have to wait until Part 2, next week!) Along the way, the Fab Two™, with Producer Casey's expertise, also examine these hard-hitting Lennon topics: How a 1981 episode of “WKRP In Cincinnati” artfully referenced Lennon to presage today's cuckoo crazy culture wars Which Chicago expressway has more hits on the Billboard charts #MattBusby Why cruise ship Elvis impersonators rely so heavily on arrhythmic hippy hippy hip shaking and incoherent mumbling All this and more, now with a very 1987-y “Digitally Remastered” banner added to the front cover! Starting in 1978, WKRP was an entertaining and fun show. It relied on an ensemble cast to drive the show forward. Tonight's show is dedicated to that show.

Back in 1976 Boston took the rock world by storm with their debut, and largely self-produced, album. This highly anticipated second album made its appearance two years later, a span of time which would in retrospect be considered quite fast - no other Boston album would appear for eight years. Don't Look Back was originally entitled "Arrival," until the band discovered that ABBA had already released an album with that name. Guitarist and producer Tom Scholz considered the album to be rushed out by the record label, and believed it was too short and needed another song. This would begin a multi-year legal battle with Epic Records that would eventually be settled in Boston's favor, but it would also be “a long time” until their third album was released, by which time only Scholz and front man Brad Delp were the only original band members in the lineup. The album was released in August and sold over four million copies in its first month, eventually being certified 7x platinum by the RIAA. As with their first album, virtually every song will be familiar, as all received significant airplay on rock stations everywhere beyond the three singles released from the album.Join us as we explore this iconic album and the events of September 1978. Don't Look BackThis lead song is an iconic staple from the rock era. It has a positive, future oriented feel to it. It is the first song on the album and the first single released. It was one of the most successful songs they released. "I finally see the dawn arriving. I see beyond the road I'm driving." "The sun is shining, and I'm on that road."The JourneyIf it sounds like Don't Look Back is cut off on the radio before the song concludes, that's because there is no break on the album between it and The Journey. This ethereal instrumental track transitions between the lead song and "It's Easy." Scholz considers this his favorite song, and wanted it to be longer on the album. It's EasyThis is a deeper cut from the album, and was not released as a single at the time. "It's easy taking it day by day."A Man I'll Never BeThere's a big difference between Don't Look Back, the first single from the album, and A Man I'll Never Be, the second single. This song is more pensive and less self-assured than the opening track, and presents a nice bookend to the first side of the album. "If only I could find a way I'd feel like I'm the man you think I am. And its getting harder every day for me to hide behind this dream you see a man I'll never be." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from “WKRP In Cincinnati”Hugh Wilson created this comedy based upon his experience working at pop radio station WQXI in Atlanta. STAFF PICKS:She's Always A Woman by Billy JoelBruce features the fourth single from Billy Joel's biggest hit album - The Stranger. It was written for his wife Elizabeth Weber. She had taken over management of Joel's career, and took a lot of grief from her adversaries in negotiation for being "unfeminine." But Joel says here, "she's always a woman." She apparently got Joel's finances back on track.Song on the Radio by Al StewartWayne brings us a surprisingly chill staff pick. This is from Al Stewart's eighth studio album, “Time Passages,” produced by Alan Parsons. Wayne mentions that this is a cruising song on a hot summer night. Stewart refers to his style as creating songs as cinema.Life's Been Good by Joe WalshRob's staff pick is an autobiographical piece from Eagles alumnus Joe Walsh off his album “But Seriously, Folks.” Like many of his songs, Walsh doesn't take himself too seriously in this song. He had a house in Beverly Hills, but he was never there. The line about “tearing out the walls,” references a real life incident in a hotel with Keith Moon.Miss You by The Rolling StonesBrian finishes off our staff picks with a Rolling Stones piece from their disco days, though they referred to it as "R&B." But Charlie Watts (drummer) embraced the disco setting. Billy Preston was riffing on the bass guitar one evening after Bill Wyman had left for the day, and Mick Jagger encouraged Wyman to play in Preston's style. LAUGH TRACK:The Thanksgiving Episode from "WKRP in Cincinnati"WKRP in Cincinnati came to an end in September, 1978, so for our Laugh Track we feature one of the most well-known episodes... “As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.”

With this debut album Thomas Dolby merged a synth-driven electronica sound with the new wave sensibility cresting on the airwaves in the early 80's. The Golden Age of Wireless would follow a loose theme of radio and communication in its tracks. Thomas Morgan Robertson's affinity for keyboards, tapes, and electronics earned him the nickname "Dolby" from his friends, and he stuck with it for a stage name after a few legal documents from the Dolby Corporation. This debut album did well on both sides of the Atlantic, and several songs would become staples of both radio and video during this time. So, let's step into this phenomenal new wave album - “it's poetry in motion!” “She Blinded Me with Science” Interestingly, this hit song from the album wasn't actually on the album in it's first US release, but was placed there on the second release. Dolby pitched the video on a storyboard before the song was written. “One of Our Submarines” This eerie track was the "B" side to She Blinded Me with Science. Dolby had an uncle who died on a submarine in World War II. “Airwaves” There were multiple versions of this song, this version being more keyboard-driven. Dolby did much of the instrumental work on this album, but also had a number of guest musicians as well. “Europa and the Pirate Twins” In the story, Europa was a girl from Dolby’s childhood who had to move. They swore that they would be "the pirate twins" forever, but that would not happen after she became famous. Fun fact: Thomas Dolby was the keyboard player behind Foreigner's "Urgent." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: “Theme from WKRP in Cincinnati” This TV series would finish its run in 1982. STAFF PICKS: “Harden my Heart” by QuarterFlash The lead singer, Rindy Ross, also plays the saxophone. Her husband, Marv Ross, plays guitar in the band. The band still plays from time to time, and is now based in Portland, OR. “Do You Believe in Love” by Huey Lewis and the News Bruce's staff pick highlights the first top 10 hit by what would be a mainstay group of the 80's. The video maintains a humorous edge with the band singing in a girl's bedroom. There are great harmonies in this hit. “Don’t You Want Me Baby?” by The Human League "You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar when I met you." Brian's staff pick isn't a love song, but a power struggle. This was one of many songs propelled up the charts by the influence of MTV. “Genius of Love” by the Tom Tom Club This dance-oriented song is the only top 10 hit by The Tom Tom Club. Rob shares that this group is a husband and wife team who were originally members of The Talking Heads. They recorded this song while on hiatus from the more famous group. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK: “DNA” by The Flock of Seagulls We close out this episode with an instrumental cut from the band best known for the song "I Ran."

This installment of Rewind transports us back to a time when television was much simpler - there were only three TV networks, you had to get off the couch and turn a knob on your TV set to change the channel, and a banal show like "Three's Company" could be nominated for the Best Comedy Emmy Award. Pete and his guest Don Robert, A+E Networks' guru of Research, talk about WKRP In Cincinnati's "Turkeys Away" episode, the bawdy fun Match Game, and the joy of the annual TV Guide Fall Preview Issue. Pete and co-host Adam Victor reminisce about one of the greatest TV nights in history: ABC's Happy Days/Laverne & Shirley Tuesday night lineup. Plus Mork & Mindy, Fantasy Island, and a serious discussion about the luckiest celebrity sibling of all time (Jim Belushi vs. Beau Bridges vs. David Arquette). Goodies: YouTube Playlist: You'll see all the things we talk about in this episode, from the Turkey Drop in WKRP In Cincinnati to the introduction of the "Star Wheel" in Match Game.
