Tune in to find out what Jay's Sioux name is.    Sci-Fi Saturdays The last couple weeks have given us two different movies you'll want to revisit on Sci-Fi Saturdays. Plus, Jay breaks down the final Star Trek: The Next Generation movie Star Trek: Nemesis. It may not have been the best Star Trek film, but there were some pretty fascinating performances in it. Make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to  SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua break down each episode of the entire MCU.     Enjoy Presidents!  As long as there have been movies, we have needed to have someone portray the United States Commander in Chief. A lot of times these leaders weren't the ones we know from history. Instead, the actor or actress portraying them gets to come up with their own persona. So which ones stood out? What were some of our favorite fictional presidents that gave a good speech, or showed good leadership, or even kicked some butt and saved the day?    Which of our fictional presidents would you like to be your leader? Which ones would you make sure not to vote for? First person that emails me with the subject line, “My fellow Americans” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. My bud Vinnie Brezinsky from Huey and Bax joins me to gab--or is it gobble?--about this classic turkey drop! The station is running so smoothly that Carlson is feeling useless and left out. He pries into everyone else's projects, angering and annoying them in the process. Consequently, he decides to take matters into his own hands. He clandestinely plans a secret Thanksgiving Day publicity stunt. During disc jockey Johnny Fever's segment, on-the-scene reporter Les Nessman gives live commentary of the spectacle. Actually, debacle is the correct term, because the stunt involved Carlson and Herb throwing live turkeys into the unsuspecting crowd from a helicopter. People run from the turkey bombs just as Johnny cuts the feed. Finally, Carlson, Herb, and Les return to the station and detail the horrific affair.Based on a true story, this episode has comedy in spades! Drug references? Yep. Absurd ideas from incompetent bosses? Check. Turkeys hitting the pavement like sacks of wet cement? Definitely! Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr.,better known by his stage name, Dr. John, was a singer-songwriter who blended funk, R&B and New Orleans blues into a distinctive sound.   Dr. John was well known for his stage shows which were inspired by an eclectic mix of medicine shows, voodoo ceremonies, and Mardi Gras costumes.  Dr. John got his start as a session musician in the 1950s, and continued doing session work throughout his career playing keyboards for Aretha Franklin, the Rolling Stones, and Van Morrison as a member of "The Wrecking Crew."  He recorded thirty studio albums and nine live albums before his death in 2019, including the one we profile today. In the Right Place is Dr. John's sixth album and his best selling one, peaking at number 24 on the Billboard 200 chart.  He is backed up on this album by The Meters, a New Orleans funk band that formed in 1965.  The Meters were the house band for Alan Toussaint, who produced, arranged, and played on a number of tracks on the album.Mac Rebennack's father ran an appliance shop in the East End of New Orleans where, in addition to fixing radios and televisions, he sold records to people from a wide variety of races and cultures.  Rebennack was expelled from his Catholic high school when the priests told him he had to either stop playing in the clubs or leave.  The stage name Dr. John was taken from a 19th-century Louisiana voodoo priest.  In turn, Dr. John would inspire two other characters - Johnny Fever (from "WKRP in Cincinnati") and Dr. Teeth (from "The Muppet Show").The future Dr. John started playing guitar and switched to piano after nearly losing a finger during an on-tour gunfight. It's time for some New Orleans funk as Wayne brings us this album for the podcast.  Friend of the show Sean Mooney joins us for this one. Traveling MoodYou can expect any rock group to eventually put out a song about losing a woman, but it takes Dr. John to make this tragedy whimsical and fun.  "Said that she'd never leave me, now she's gone away to grieve me.  I was fast asleep, when she begun her midnight creep."QualifiedThis is a social hierarchy song about a guy telling people who think they are better than others that they are not.  "Your social life ain't no better than my hot dog stand.  Your edu-ma-cation ain't no hipper than what you understand."Right Place, Wrong TimeThis is the funky hit that peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It was also Dr. John's only top 40 hit, making him technically a one-hit wonder.   "I took the right road but I must have took a wrong turn."  "I took a right move, but I made it at the wrong time." Cold, Cold, ColdIn this song, the man wishes a woman he loves was not also running around with the other guys.  There's a pit of a Rolling Stones sound about this one, and maybe a little bit of Randy Newman humor. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Live and Let Die by Wings (from the motion picture “Live and Let Die”)This song was the theme which first introduced Roger Moore as James Bond.  It also reunited Paul McCartney with former Beatles producer George Martin. STAFF PICKS:Drift Away by Dobie GrayRob drifts into the staff picks with this song originally written by Mentor Williams in 1970, and first performed by swamp rock singer John Henry Kurtz.  Soul singer Dobie Gray would produce the rendition we would know best.  Gray would land at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, making this song his biggest hit.  The lyrical tribute to the power of music would make it a frequent cover by lots of artists.Daniel by Elton JohnLynch features a song with a story.  Daniel is an American soldier injured in Vietnam who, though accepted by his family, receives criticism from the public due to the polarizing nature of that war.  Disillusioned by the response, Daniel decides to go away to Spain.  Almost all of this storyline was contained in the last verse of the song, which was cut before it was produced.China Grove by the Doobie Brothers Friend of the show Sean brings us a song which introduces itself with a great guitar riff and keyboards.  It is sung and written by Tom Johnson for the Doobie Brothers third studio album, "The Captain and Me."  It went to number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.  While Johnson was writing about a fictional town, there are several towns called China Grove in America. The Free Electric Band by Albert HammondWayne closes out the staff picks with a prog rock hit.  Songwriter Hammond has written a number of hits over the years, though this particular one only went to number 48.  The lyrics are about a privileged child who decides to move to California to play music despite his parents higher expectations for him.   COMEDY TRACK:Back When My Hair Was Short by Gunhill RoadThis lone hit by Gunhill Road went to number 40, and was produced by Kenny Rogers.

“It was one of those like 'this is what I wanted, wow, this is Johnny Fever, this is radio, and then it, kind of honestly, it quickly declined after that, because of, you know, changes and Napster recording things, stealing things, and the DJ really, um, for the companies I worked with, lost their importance to the corporate creative team, which was a real disappointment. I mean, there's nothing worse than getting into something that you love to do your creative part and then, like, ‘oh yeah, welcome aboard! We don't do creative anymore.'” -- Van Gunter My next guest has spent over twenty years as a voice actor, eight years as a radio DJ, and, for the last sixteen years, has been an audio engineer. He works with his best friends and is part owner of the studio where he began as an intern, Boutwell Studios. His name is Van Gunter. We were introduced by Kelley Buttrick many years back when he attended his first FaffCon, and I've been trying to get him on this podcast for a long time, so I'm very excited that he was able to join me for this interview. His understanding of how things work both in front of and behind the glass is bound to make for some very interesting observations and golden nuggets. And, of course, sound has been a big part of his life for a long long time. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!As always, if you have questions for my guests, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. And if you have questions for me, visit www.audiobrandingpodcast.com where you'll find a lot of ways to get in touch. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter will let you know when the new podcasts are available. And if you're getting some value from listening, feel free to spread that around and share it with a friend, along with leaving an honest review. Both those things really help – and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. You can leave one either in written or in voice format from the podcast's main page. I would so appreciate that. Being Johnny FeverAs the interview starts, Van tells us about his first memories of sound, from his parents sneaking into his room to check on him as a toddler to the terrifying first impression a birthday party made on him. “And it was the sound of all these kids screaming,” he says, “and like thirty balloons popping.” We talk about how WKRP in Cincinnati helped inspire his career in radio, and how school systems at the time didn't have a good answer for future voice artists like him. “I didn't have a clear direction of what to do with being a disrupter,” Van tells us. “I just knew that I was loud and talked and tried to be nice.” Like a Rock StarNext, we discuss his early career as a radio DJ and the ups and downs that the 21st century has brought to the industry. “When they say that ‘we're not gonna do contracts this year,'” Van warns us, “[that] it ‘doesn't matter,' you're next.” He recalls being a disc jockey for an alternative music station just before the switch to digital audio, and how, for a time, his dream of being WKRP's Johnny Fever came true. “It was a brief amazing period of my life when I felt like I got treated like a rock star.” Making You MoveVan tells us how the changing industry led him to Boutwell Studios and how his role quickly expanded from a DJ to a voiceover artist and audio engineer, a success he attributes to "a lot of anxiety and a lot of kindness from the people that I worked with." He shares his vocal warm-up routine and the important role hip-hop and jazz play. "It makes you move and it gets your blood flowing," he says, "and you're excited, and all of a sudden you're smiling and you can't remember...
