I admit that my Thanksgiving memories are fairly well mixed because what happens from year to year is so similar. It’s hard to distinguish one from another. That's part of what makes celebrating Thanksgiving so special for so many people: the fact that we repeat what we did last year and the years before that. After all, how would most react to the suggestion that this year we should eat burgers? We don’t normally think of Good Friday as a day of thanksgiving, even though it is called Good. It’s a somber day on which we recall the suffering and pain that our Savior, Jesus, endured to make perfect payment for the sins of the world. Good Friday is the day that Jesus cried out in terrible spiritual agony, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). It doesn’t seem appropriate to consider it a day of thanksgiving. And yet that’s what Good Friday was in heaven: Thanksgiving Day! And why? Because on that day, a sinner repented. It was one of the men hanging there with Jesus, to be exact. What did repentance mean? Not that this man covered his head with ashes and walked around with a burlap sack on. No, true repentance means rending our hearts, not our clothes. It means acknowledging our complete brokenness before God—and the sin that results from our nature—but then seeing that in Jesus we have perfect forgiveness and salvation for time and eternity. This man’s repentance was simply and beautifully expressed with a few words: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Lovely repentance. And what happened in heaven? Thanksgiving broke out, just as Jesus once promised, “I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent” (Luke 15:7). At least for that one sinner, it was the best Thanksgiving ever because of what it meant that day and what it will mean for him for all eternity. One of the most popular shows to hit American television, Friends, had 10 Thanksgiving episodes across its 10-season run. I've picked 4 of my favorites for this week's show. Season 5, Episode 8, “The One With All the Thanksgivings”If you've never seen Friends before, I bet you've seen some out-of-context images of Monica wearing a fez, sunglasses, and a 20 lb. turkey on her head. This is the episode where you get context for the wearing of a turkey. Don't let the title fool you—this is not a repackaged clip show. Season 6, Episode 9, “The One Where Ross Got High”Monica and Chandler are bracing for an awkward Thanksgiving. Monica's parents are coming to dinner, but they don't know about their relationship, let alone that they're living together. And to make it worse, they don't like Chandler. In this episode, we get to the root cause of why the elder Gellers don't like Chandler, and we also find out several other long-kept secrets. Season 7, Episode 8, “The One Where Chandler Doesn't Like Dogs”Chandler doesn't like dogs, but Ross doesn't like ice cream. We learn some more long-kept secrets in this Thanksgiving episode of the series. And we just can't name that last state. However, by the end, it might just be a “Moo Point.” “The One Where Chandler Doesn't Like Dogs” features some of the iconic moments of the series and is well worth a watch. Season 8, Episode 9, “The One With the Rumor”Brad Pitt guest stars in this episode as Monica and Ross' high school friend, Will, who's had a glow-up since the last time they saw him. Will is in town for the holiday and is joining them for dinner. However, Rachel made his high school days miserable, and in a classic Rachel move, she doesn't remember it all. And just like that, Thanksgiving was here. Thanksgiving is a strange one for me. So much of Thanksgiving was spent by me, normally at my Mom and Dad's, cooking and watching football. We were such a small family, but I really do cherish that time that I got and those small and intimate moments with my parents. I realize only now how truly lucky I was to have great people who loved me and never did anything BUT support me. As a parent myself, I now see some real jerks who never had any business having a child. My folks were the best, and I'm just trying to bring a bit of that to my friends and family during Thanksgiving. Sorry, I got mushy there for a bit.
