Rerun: Increasing Efficiency Through Power Line Reconductoring, with Umed Paliwal

Reconductoring power grids to boost energy efficiencyThe expansion of renewable energy has resulted in a heightened need for greater transmission capacity of the electrical grid. Unfortunately, permitting and cost allocation have been large hurdles to the potential of rapid expansion to meet future demand. As an alternative, large-scale reconductoring of advanced conductor systems has been proposed as a solution. Such an alternative can double transmission capacity cost-effectively, without the need to ensure additional permitting. In order to achieve this transition, old steel power lines would be replaced with carbon fiber, reducing electricity loss and boosting the overall capacity of the power grid. How does reconductoring work?In order to achieve clean energy goals, it is vital that we increase power grid capacity. To briefly summarize, electrons travel along transmission lines between towers made of conducting elements and a strength member, which allows conductors to hang between towers. The most common type of reinforcement is ACSR, aluminum conductor steel reinforced, used in overhead electrical transmissions. ACSR is susceptible to degradation and breakage, which may lead to more frequent power outages and increased chemical runoff into the environment. As an alternative, ACSS has been proposed by researchers as it carries more current than ACSR and is supported at higher temperatures. According to recent studies by the Goldman School and GridLab, replacing power lines with advanced conductors would enable 90% clean electricity by 2035. The report revealed that reconductoring transmission lines could add approximately 65 TW-miles of new interzonal transmission capacity in ten years, compared to 16TW-miles from building only new transmission lines. In terms of pricing, implementing advanced conductors costs around 20% more than building new lines. Yet replacing old lines with advanced conductors is typically half the cost than building new lines for the same capacity, partly because you reuse old infrastructure and the new models are much more energy efficient. Further policy and legislation is necessary in order to drive this technology into the future and ensure proper permitting, funding, and planning. What are some of the benefits?Advanced composite-core conductors such as ACSS can carry double the existing capacity, operate at higher temperatures, and reduce line sag. Further, replacing the steel for a stronger yet smaller composite-based core can avoid the construction of new lines which bring about land acquisition and increasing permitting. There is already a growing movement towards reconductoring, as 90,000 miles of advanced conductors have been deployed globally. More advanced conductors also have the benefit of being cost-effective, with an estimated $180 billion in systems cost savings with more long-term structure. Advanced conductors enable a doubling of line capacity at less than half the cost of new lines. Alongside the benefits, at large, reconductoring can play a pivotal role in low-cost decarbonization of power systems. What are some of the drawbacks?Amidst the potential advantages are obstacles that may impede the future progress of reconductoring. First, there is a lack of awareness. Conventionally, the only way to expand the grid capacity has been to build new lines. Utilities are not aware of the existing solution and often fail to take reconductoring into account. Alongside this is a lack of experience and misconception that implementing reconductoring lines is difficult and unrealistic. As there is a lack of incentives for utilities to improve their products, cheaper solutions are not enticing for their rate of return regulation. Particularly if reconductoring only occurs in localized areas as opposed to system-wide implementation, the benefits may be limited. Thus, government prioritization of this new solution is critical in order to boost conductor efficiency.About our guestUmed Paliwal is a senior scientist at the Center for Environmental Public Policy and the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley. E115: uMed was a marketplace platform for self-insured employers to shop for healthcare services that David started with his son Dan in late 2019. When the COVID-19 pandemic brought business to a halt, they pivoted to a COVID-19 testing business to solve the overwhelming demand problem for timely and convenient testing. Competing in a market dominated by large hospital systems and state health departments, they discuss how uMed beat these incumbents at their own game by providing better, cheaper and faster testing at scale. Dr. Matt Wilson is the Founder and CEO of uMEd, bringing together healthcare providers and researchers to reach out to patients to participate in clinical trials.  Using health data, uMed facilitates targeting good candidates for trials and helps the care provider educate patients about the value of participating in one or multiple clinical trials. In a very repeatable and scalable environment, uMed can match patients to specific study opportunities based on standardized queries. Matt explains, "A lot of other organizations in the clinical study space that are looking at using health record data are using it in a very different way because they're generally focused on bringing together existing EMR data or claims data from lots of different healthcare providers and using that in of itself to identify trends and value for researchers. Whereas uMed is taking a different approach, saying, "Well, actually, their health record data is incredibly useful as a starting point to be able to identify potential study participants." "We essentially have a common data infrastructure that sits across our network of healthcare providers, that's bound to the U.K. and now the U.S. as well, which will shortly be coming online. What we do in that network is each of these providers essentially say, "Yes, we want to be part of the uMed network." That allows us to be able to bring the data from those health records and normalize them across all of the different providers we're working with." #uMed #PatientRecruitment #ClinicalTrials #MedicalResearch #ClinicalTrialRecruitment uMed.io Listen to the podcast here

We open with Sam and Umed gazing at a prone and very embarrassed Charles, who complains about the American health system and generally acts like a big baby. Umed takes the hint and leaves, not without some parting jibes that let us know he is *definitely* onto something. When alone, Charles tries to deflect attention and insists he is fine, but Sam doesn't let him get away with it. She calls him out on his fear, and Charles admits to it, telling her about its source. Sam almost ruins his fencing hobby, but makes up for it with her sweet affection. We talk about Charles' need for control and Sam's appreciation of his vulnerability. ***

After being rudely reminded of the blood drive, Charles is panicking in his office, willing to feign embarrassing conditions to avoid his fear. Unfortunately, his getaway is foiled by an innocent, wide eyed woman. Charles' analogy gives us insight into his hobbies from a different life. At the blood drive, Sam can't donate, and Charles is trying to bribe a cheery phlebotomist when Sam catches on and rescues him. They are about to leave, but unfortunately, Umed chooses that time to socialize, and Charles can't handle the sight of the needle in his arm.... at all.

She struggles with that, and it is clear that Charles is struggling too. The office is meeting about the Ellesemere project. Sam comes late, having spoken with a client, a sign of her growth. Unfortunately, she lets out a "lewd" groan when sitting down, turning her and Charles bright red. Totally not a giveaway. Umed reminds everyone that the blood drive is today, resulting in a very freaked out Charles.

The doctor tells him that his heart is fine and he can slowly resume his normal activities. Marshall responds by parting from his bracelet, Mortimer, with the cutest chibi face ever. The doctor also warns the sibling that the heart condition may run in the family, and recommends that Eva and their parents get checked. Marshall thanks Eva for coming with him to the appointment, and they share a sweet moment, only to be interrupted by the unexpected presence of Daddy Lawson, who looks suspiciously like Charles. We discuss. We switch to Sam and Charles, driving home. Sam is reading the printout Umed gave her containing positie reviews from Indigineer. She is so touched that she begins crying, and her third heart is unlocked. What implications does this have moving forward? We'll find out. While walking her to her apartment (where Eva and Marshall may show up shortly!), Charles suggests that Sam may not want to go out due to her emotional day. As Charles tells Sam to ignore her, Umed comes running with news: Sam's Indigineer profile has gone from .3 to 9.5! This seems like good news, but Sam's reaction is not what they expect. She runs to another room, asking to be left alone, but Charles stays to listen. She tells him that these reviews don't matter since they didn't play her game, and she feels demotivated to keep creating. Charles encourages her, and tells her that he enjoyed her game and has begun playing more games due to her. Dion? Not Dion? We get more clues. Sam ends by asking for a hug. So wholesome.
