Psalm 77:11-15I will remember the deeds of the Lord;    yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.I will consider all your works    and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”Your ways, God, are holy.    What god is as great as our God?You are the God who performs miracles;    you display your power among the peoples. With your mighty arm you redeemed your people,    the descendants of Jacob and Joseph. There is a Hebrew word that shows up often in the Bible; the word is  ZAKAR, meaning remember. Often when God had provided a way through or a victory, people who witnessed it would stop what they were doing, and build an altar to celebrate the faithfulness of God. Jesus, on his last night with his disciples before his crucifixion, told us all to do this very thing. To take the bread and the cup in remembrance of him. There's more to this practice than just calling back to mind something that has happened. It is ruminating on the faithfulness of God that anchors us. Can you think of a situation where you didn't see a way through, where you had come to the end of yourself, but God came through? Take a moment and put yourself back in that situation of desperation, feel the doubt, feel the fear, and now remember what it felt like when you realized things were going to be OK... when you saw God come through. Ruminate on what it felt like for God to deliver, and know that that same power is available to you right now, whatever you are facingLet's pray together: “Father, help me to commit myself to the act of remembrance. To remember Your faithful power that I have seen at work in my life. Help me to hold on to that awareness when I come into situations where I don't know what to do. As above, so below”

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 11, 2025 is: ruminate • ROO-muh-nayt • verb To ruminate is to think carefully and deeply about something. // We ruminated over the implications of our decision. See the entry > Examples: “Most of the songs bear the name of a store you'd see in every mall in the United States before they became sad ghost towns, air conditioning and smooth jazz blasting in the emptied, echoing caverns of capitalism. ... The trio uses nostalgia as a tool of examination, ruminating on the not-too-distant past in order to process the funny and sometimes heartbreaking process of getting older together.” — Dash Lewis, Pitchfork, 8 July 2024 Did you know? When you ruminate, you chew something over, either literally or figuratively. Literal rumination may seem a little gross to humans, but to cows, chewing your cud (partially digested food brought up from the stomach for another chew) is just a natural part of life. Figurative ruminating is much more palatable to humans; that kind of deep, meditative thought is often deemed quite a worthy activity. The verb ruminate has described metaphorical chewing over since the early 1500s and actual chewing since later that same century. Our English word comes from and shares the meanings of the Latin verb ruminari (“to chew the cud” or “muse upon”), which in turn comes from rumen, the Latin name for the first stomach compartment of ruminant animals (that is, creatures like cows that chew their cud).

In this moment, clinical psychologist Dr. Ramani Durvasula discusses the characteristics of narcissistic individuals and how to recognise if you are in a narcissistic relationship. According to Dr. Ramani, narcissists are typically entitled, self-centred, lack empathy, and are highly socially perceptive. They often attract others with their charm and confidence, making them difficult to ignore. Early in the relationship, they can be attentive and say all the right things, but Dr. Ramani says that a shift usually occurs between the six-week and six-month mark. At this point, the narcissist may become distant, passive-aggressive, and start blaming their partner, leading the other person to question themselves and fear being alone. Dr. Ramani explains that there are key signs you can look for to determine if you are in such a relationship. By paying attention to the ‘3 Rs' - Ruminate, Regret, and Recall - you can assess whether you frequently ruminate on the relationship, feel regret, or recall positive moments to justify staying. Recognising these patterns can help you acknowledge the unhealthy behaviour and free yourself from the relationship.

Psalm 77:11-15 I will remember the deeds of the Lord;     yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works     and meditate on all your mighty deeds.” Your ways, God, are holy.     What god is as great as our God? You are the God who performs miracles;     you display your power among the peoples. Ruminate on what it felt like for God to deliver, and know that that same power is available to you right now, whatever you are facing Let's pray together: “Father, help me to commit myself to the act of remembrance. To remember Your faithful power that I have seen at work in my life. Help me to hold on to that awareness when I come into situations where I don't know what to do. As above, so below”

Check out my Patreon tiers, any help is much appreciated :) www.patreon.com/user?u=88044382 In episode 379, we delve into the often overlooked importance of embracing stillness and 'doing nothing'. Often our fast-paced lives neglect the importance of these silent moments. However, learning to be at peace in stillness, without ruminating, is a crucial skill to help manage OCD and anxiety. As we further engage with this concept, an interesting correlation is drawn between OCD and boredom. The idea that the obsessive thinking tied to OCD can serve as a distraction from monotony is explored, hinting towards the possibility that OCD might be a mechanism developed to counteract boredom—a form of undisguised anxiety. The challenge of idle states for those struggling with OCD is acknowledged, but a constructive solution is offered—embracing mindfulness. By directing focus onto the present moment and grounding oneself, it can offer relaxation and relief from the cycle of thoughts. Practical tips on bringing mindfulness into these idle periods are provided, such as paying keen attention to your immediate surroundings and tuning into the senses. By focusing on what you can see, hear, smell, or touch, it keeps the attention grounded in the present moment, providing a refreshing rest from intrusive thoughts. In conclusion, the power of doing nothing is recognized as a positive coping strategy for those dealing with OCD and anxiety. However, it must be approached mindfully, ensuring that in moments of 'doing nothing', we stay connected to the present moment and grant ourselves much-needed peace from ruminating thoughts Disclaimer: Robert James Pizey (of Robert James Coaching) is not a medical professional and is also not providing therapy or medical treatment. Habits 2 Goals: The Habit Factor® Podcast with Martin Grunburg | Goal Achievement, Productivity & Success – Simplified

This Habits 2 Goals episode is FREE for ALL subscribers.“Wisdom is equal parts experience and reflection.” ~ AristotleRuminationThe term 'rumination' is often associated with negative thinking patterns. For better or worse, psychology has perpetuated this idea.As you can see from the definition above, to ruminate is to simply consider or think deeply about something; as in philosophical ruminations.Have you ever encountered a new concept that left you confused?Perhaps worse, you thought you fully understood the idea and you didn't.Encountering new ideas in a strange way is somewhat similar to meeting a large group of new people.Just as it takes time to distinguish faces and learn names, it takes time to really grasp new ideas.Imagine embarking on a week-long hike with a group of strangers. On day one, the faces blur together, and names are impossible to recall.By day four, after shared experiences and conversations, you not only know each of the individuals but their distinct personalities and backstories emerge.New ideas, concepts and information unfold similarly.By ruminating on new ideas important distinctions appear that were unnoticeable at first. The next time you encounter an idea that seems confusing or even interesting, ruminate on it for a week, a month, or even longer.View it as an opportunity for deep exploration. Ironically, by dwelling upon the complex, important and simple distinctions come to light.~mgEnjoy the show! The link to the tracking sheet is here: https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesAdditional:* Download the free habits-to-goals tracking template to cultivate the habits that support your goals here: https://thehabitfactor.com/templates.* Books that may help "The Power of Positive Thinking" by Norman Vincent Peale and "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie.* MG's Books: EVERYTHING is a F*cking Story, The Pressure Paradox™ & The Habit Factor®Enjoy the show!~mgFrom the world of statistics: All models are flawed, but some are useful. We asked Google's AI experiment Gemini to “break” the “3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System” behavior model. The short story (no pun intended), is he/she/IT could not. Chris discusses an attentional principle that is readily observable for most people. You can't both ruminate and engage the goings-on of the here-and-now at the same time. You're either doing one or the other, even if that means that you're quickly switching back and forth between the two. Chris builds on this concept and provides a practical strategy to harness the principle in order to make gains on rumination.

Question is, do you believe in the power of positive thinking and the law of attraction and just for definition?00:00:54JackPurposes here, the law of attraction is if.00:00:58JackPut out positive.00:01:02JackEnergy into the universe. Then you will receive an equal amount of positive energy and good things in your life. So if I want that job, I have to put out the energy in the vibes that like I deserve that job. That's that's my job. I'm good enough for that.00:01:23JackClub and then the universe will reward me by giving me that job, and if the.00:01:29JackIf I don't get.00:01:30JackThe job, then that means I wasn't putting out strong enough.00:01:35JackEnergy or vibrations in order to get that job. So I was a long winded explanation, but what do you think about this? The law of attraction?00:01:47XochitlAnd positive thinking and effect on your life.00:01:50XochitlI think positive thinking. I believe a lot in.00:01:53XochitlToxic positivity, which is that.00:01:56XochitlYou know, if someone's ill or someone is going through a lot of hardships or was a victim of something horrible and your response is that they need to think more positively.00:02:10XochitlIt's very invalidating and it's toxic to the victims or the person who are enduring hardships.00:02:18XochitlAnd I think positive thinking is a little bit of a self fulfilling process. See in the sense that people who are positive thinkers or label themselves as such.00:02:32XochitlProbably see more good things happening in their life, because that's what they're looking for.00:02:39XochitlLike for example I a lot of people think of me as a positive thing for, but I'm not necessarily one, especially now because I've been dealing with that and I think that.00:02:52XochitlUM.00:02:57XochitlI well I'm.00:02:58XochitlProbably gonna miss some positive things that are happening to me because I might feel overwhelmed or they might.00:03:04XochitlBe overshadowed by.00:03:05XochitlNegative things like I've been sick a lot lately, and stuff like that. So someone who is in a place in their life where they insist on positive thinking might be like, hey, well, I got that job offer last week.00:03:18XochitlAnd someone else would be like, yeah, but, you know, I got another infection or something, so.00:03:23XochitlI think people who have like positive thinking are more likely to see positive things in their life, but it's also a symptom to me.00:03:32XochitlThat you're like, in a place of privilege where your general health and life and everything allow you to think and see things more positively.00:03:43XochitlVersus someone who is.00:03:46XochitlEither a realist or someone who thinks negatively is probably not in such a great place either their physical health, mental health, or life conditions are probably not that great at the time.00:03:59XochitlYeah. So what do you think, Jack?00:04:01JackYeah. The last thing a.00:04:02JackA person who's sick wants to hear is a healthy person. Lecture them about the positive thinking. You know what I mean? It's just not. It's just not constructive. It's not. It's not helpful.00:04:16JackYou know, I I think I think I think.00:04:18JackI'm a realist. I think. I think I'm. I'm much prefer to be grounded in reality than to kind of allow my my mind to wander into the.00:04:31JackInto the clouds of of positive thinking, you know, and so. But also, I don't think it's necessarily good to ruminate. Ruminate means to obsess about the past and to and to consume yourself with negative thoughts. Also, I think that that, that that's equally as bad as.00:04:52JackConsuming yourself with positive thoughts.00:04:55발표자Right.00:04:56JackAnd I mean when it.00:04:57JackComes down to it like the the biggest determiner of your economic well-being.00:05:05JackIs the ZIP code that you grew up in?00:05:09JackThe where you were born you that that that statistically like will tell more about gives us more information about a person's future. You know how successful is Jack going to be? Well, where was Jack born? What zip code was he born in and then he OK so he was born in the suburbs of Minnesota.00:05:09XochitlRight.00:05:11XochitlRight.00:05:27JackOf of St. Paul, MN. Alright well that that tells me that Jack had a pretty privileged life and he is probably going to do OK and and it doesn't have anything to do with my positive thinking.00:05:42JackBut if I say.00:05:43JackThey're going around and preaching to people about positive thinking, like you should just think positively. I think I should start. Then they can say to me like, well, it's easy for you to say that because you grew up in a in a place of privilege. You grew up in a nice neighborhood. It was safe. You had.00:06:03JackYou know, loving parents that protected you and took care of you. You had a shelter, you had clothes, you had food. You know, you never really knew.00:06:12JackWhat hardships were?00:06:14JackAnd then now you're going to talk about how all of that was just because you were thinking positively. No, it was the luck of where I was born. That's it, you know? And it was all just luck. It's it's all random chance where we're born, it doesn't mean we can't escape things. But I think the.00:06:35JackWe have to remain, we have to remain.00:06:39JackWe have to be realistic about it. Thank you. We have to be realistic about it. We can't just let ourselves go. Oh.00:06:46JackIt's just positive.00:06:46JackThinking because that's why I'm successful. No. And you know, or why I'm not successful is. I wasn't thinking positively enough. No, it's a lot of it has to do with with random chance.00:06:58JackGood luck.00:06:59JackAnd UM, unfortunately that's that's more realistic. That's the real world we live in. I don't know. Do you agree with that or what? What do you think?00:07:06XochitlRight.00:07:09XochitlYeah, I think ultimately we the privilege that you've either been surrounded by and that is way more.00:07:19XochitlIndicative of the kind of life that you're going to live than.00:07:22XochitlAnything else I?00:07:23XochitlSee it amongst my friends. Umm, I had one college educated parent.00:07:28XochitlAnd I got through college, but it took me longer, a little longer than most of my friends who had two college educated parents.00:07:37XochitlWho easily finished their four years.00:07:43XochitlAnd for my friends who had no college educated parents, a very small percentage of them even went to college.00:07:49JackRight.00:07:51JackYeah, yeah, you can see these patterns that just replicate themselves just over and over again. You know, it's very hard to escape your, you know, your history and it it it it takes a long time. I I have one college educated parent also. And so it took me. Yeah, it did take me a little bit longer than.00:08:13JackFour years to to graduate, I did it in like 4 and.00:08:16JackHalf years, but, but ultimately at the end of the day, I mean I'm I'm very privileged. I know that. And and I and I accept that it's not it, you know, it's not something that was that I it's just it was just luck you know it's just where where you're born.00:08:23XochitlMe too. Yeah.00:08:36JackAnd the.00:08:36JackThat's it. And it doesn't mean that you're stuck in that situation, but I think it's good to recognize it as reality and say, yes, I have certain privileges and I should be thankful for that. Instead of saying attributing it all to my positive thinking. It's like everything I have is because I was a positive thinker and those who don't.00:08:38XochitlRight.00:08:57JackHave what I have are just negative and that that that stuff is nonsense. I I really.00:09:02XochitlRight.00:09:02JackDon't believe in.00:09:02JackThat so I I would say ultimately this one, I do not believe in the power of positive thinking. I think it's good to to be positive when good things are happening. It's good to recognize negative things when they're happening and it's good to be realistic.00:09:16JackSick. That's what I think.00:09:18XochitlYeah. And I also think that the hardest working person you know is probably not a millionaire or a billionaire or even rich. In fact, the hardest working person I know is like dirt poor, and they're waking up at like 4:00 AM or 5:00 AM to go to farming every day. That's the hardest working person that I know.00:09:39XochitlUp usually as you go up in the economic bracket in jobs, the easier it kind of gets. Maybe it's mentally tiring, but it's not going to be the same as having to wake up at 4:00 or 5:00 AM to go do farm work until 8:00 PM at night, and maybe not having time to eat some days because you're so busy.00:10:00XochitlIt's just a very different life to be like a A professor or a teacher or.00:10:06XochitlYou know a CEO or anything?00:10:09JackYes, let's let's let's talk about that really quickly because I think that's really important. Salary is does not like the more money you make and the earn, it does not mean you work harder. As a matter of fact, the farther up you go on the food chain, the easier your life becomes because you get more passive income.00:10:29JackAnd you know what I mean? Like, the more money people make that it's the easier it gets to make more money. And when you're at the at the like you said, dirt poor you. Those people work.00:10:31발표자Yep, Yep.00:10:43JackEnormously long hours and very, very hard. And they're and they're never rewarded for their level of work, you know. And it's it's just so utterly unfair. And I think that the law of of attraction and the, the, the, the power of positive thinking.00:11:04JackPeople who who believe that.00:11:06JackThen they have to dismiss those people and say, well, you're working hard, they're not working that hard or they're not thinking positively while they're in the fields. I mean, that's what a bunch of nonsense, yeah.00:11:16XochitlYeah, what a jerk. Move. Yeah.00:11:20XochitlYeah, honestly, yeah.00:11:23XochitlAll right. Three weeks ago you and a friend exchanged heated words at a group dinner and you've been left feeling a mix of regret, anger and embarrassment. Since then, you've been reliving every detail of what happened over and over again, replaying what you both said, what her words might have meant, and whether or not this indicates that she's been getting increasingly frustrated with you over the past year.   This negative and unproductive overthinking is called rumination, and in today's episode, our resident friendship expert Danielle Bayard Jackson talks about the consequences of rumination, and particularly the impact it can have on our relationships, due to the ways in which it can hamper our ability to reconcile with friends. Danielle shares her acronym ‘IDEA' to cover the four key reasons why rumination can be so dangerous and damaging when it comes to our relationships.   Tune in to find out more, and as always, stay tuned to the end for this week's homework.   REFERENCES: STUDY - "Socialized to Ruminate? Episode 50: We Ruminate on Prayer

That Don't Fit

Andy and JT discuss the practice, challenges and glories of prayer and how they have been inspired to pray by the experience and words of others.     Quotes: C. S. Lewis:  "Well, let's now at any rate come clean.  Prayer is irksome.  An excuse to omit it is never unwelcome.  When it is over, this casts a feeling of relief and holiday over the rest of the day.  We are reluctant to begin.  We are delighted to finish.  While we are at prayer, but not while we are reading a novel or solving a cross-word puzzle, any trifle is enough to distract us."   Tim Kerr:  “To pray in the Spirit is to pray when the Spirit moves in our hearts and helps us to desire and seek God's will. It is the Spirit imparting the heart of God to us in the moment. When we pray in the Spirit, as John Owen says so compellingly, ‘we see a sight of God as on a throne of grace' and we know He welcomes our prayers to Him.”    Corrie Ten Boom: ”Any concern too small to be turned into a prayer is too small to be made into a burden."   E.M. Bounds:  "Prayer….is simply making known our requests to God for things agreeable to His will in the name of Christ….Prayer is infinite ignorance trusting to the wisdom of God."   Timothy Chester:  "Here is the test of whether you have grasped the radical simplicity of the gospel.  Do you think your prayers are more likely to be answered if you are living a more godly life or if you are also fasting or if you bind demons in your prayer or if you pray for two hours rather than one hour?  If we are inclined to answer yes to any of these questions then we have not grasped the sufficiency of Christ's mediatorial role."   Timothy Chester: "It is sometimes said that good private prayer is the foundation of good corporate prayer, but it may be more biblical to say that that corporate prayer is the foundation of private prayer.  Our experience of God in Christ is corporate.  Western individualism has made the individual alone with God the centre of spirituality.  For the people of the Bible it is the relationship between God and his people that is central.  Personal prayer revolves around this common experience-not the other way around."   Charles Spurgeon:  “The throne to which we are called is the throne of grace.  It is a throne set up on purpose for the dispensation of grace and from which every utterance is an utterance of grace.  The scepter that is stretched out from it is the silver scepter of grace.  The decrees proclaimed from it are purposes of grace.  The gifts that are scattered down its golden steps are gifts of grace, and he who sits upon the throne is grace Himself”.     "I find it wise to sprinkle a few words of prayer between everything I do" - Charles Spurgeon   "I find this a tremendous truth and a rather uncomfortable challenge ,my prayers, whether I pray, how much I pray, about what I pray—reveal my priorities, and they reveal how much I really think I need God, or whether I am—deep down, in fact self-assured and self-righteous. If Paul, an Apostle of Christ Jesus, by the will of God knew that he needed to bow my knees before the Father, what of us? If Jesus Christ, the greatest teacher in the world followed up his instruction by prayer what of us, if Jesus Christ who was sent on a mission that changed not just world history but all of eternity, knew that he needed to pray—what of us?" - Alistair Begg   "Then came the reading of the scripture, that was time enough no hurry, how those English people did love the word of God. The second prayer followed. that was my prayer because it was everybody's cry. His prayer was greater to me than his sermon. In his sermon, he talked with men, in his prayer, he communed with God. When he described the coming of Christ to the soul it seemed to me I saw for the first time I saw the King in his beauty—the suppliant was forgiven, with his face streaming with tears and his tone so full and rich that it swept through every heart —as a breath of perfumed air flows through the halls of a palace. This divine air possessed our hearts when he cried, we love Thee, Thou knowest it. Not because Thou art great but because of the inestimable gift of the only begotten Son.  Lift us up, O God. Take us out of the dust. Let us by faith come to the fountain and be washed. We come. We feel Thou hath washed us. We are clean. Yes,  we are clean. Blessed be the Lord our God. Make us young again. Wake us up. Let us not sleep. We thank Thee for our troubles…for all that makes us conscious of our alienation from Thee, bless our orphanage, our college, our retreat…and so on he went enumerating every claim and presenting the request so naturally, that every heart joined in the upgoing petition. We close our prayer. As to the words we have been with Thee. We know it that thou hast heard us and blessed us. We feel it. We retire from the mercy seat, and we thank Thes for audience, and pray for a blessing on us all" —Spurgeon the Pastor by Geoffrey Chang   Books: Pray Big: Learn to Pray Like an Apostle (Inspiration from the Apostle Paul on how to pray and what to pray)   Spurgeon the Pastor: Recovering a Biblical and Theological Vision for Ministry
