Joseph Chalom and Kean Gilbert break down why SharpLink staked $200 million in ETH through Lido, making the case that unlike Bitcoin, Ethereum is a natively productive asset that treasury companies have a duty to put to work. They unpack why a proposal to cut Ethereum's staking issuance would undermine the risk-free rate anchoring DeFi lending and push institutions toward competitors like Solana, and explain why native yield is becoming the standard institutional playbook for ETH exposure.Joseph Chalom is the CEO of SharpLink, one of the largest corporate treasury holders of Ethereum. Too often, Christian men and women have been told to find their identity and purpose in roles like husband or wife, or father and mother. For episode 263 of the Crypto Altruists podcast, we're excited to welcome James Newell of the GSR Foundation, a global charity and grantmaker working to ensure that no one is excluded from the benefits of technology. Their tagline says it beautifully: inclusion powers innovation. GSR Foundation is also a supporter of Crypto Altruists and has been essential in helping us get our Web3 Impact Toolkit off the ground. On this show, we spend a lot of time exploring new models for funding impact, and this episode dives into one of the most exciting and forward-thinking approaches we've come across. Some of you will recognize the GSR name from the crypto and trading world, and we get into the relationship between the company and the Foundation. But what really drew us to this conversation is how the Foundation is using the tools of this space to drive real-world impact, in ways that point toward the future of philanthropy. Here's what I mean. The GSR Foundation is directing Ethereum staking rewards, through Lido Impact Staking, to fund incredible partners like UNICEF, Mercy Corps Ventures, and Grassroots Economics. It's a model where you can put your crypto to work generating yield, and direct that yield toward causes that matter, all without giving up your underlying assets. It's truly a positive-sum way to give. We also explore their work supporting partners like Relay Funder, which is building blockchain tools for displaced communities, how they're pioneering new ways to use stablecoins to fund impact, and why education is such a critical part of their mission. In today's discussion you'll learn:

About a third of all ETH — over 41 million coins across nearly 900,000 validators — is already locked into staking. A new Ethereum proposal, EIP-8363, wants to make sure it never crosses 50%, by tapering staking rewards down to almost nothing as that threshold approaches. The proposal landed just 48 hours before the deadline to be considered for Ethereum's next upgrade, and it immediately set off one of the most heated governance fights the ecosystem has seen in years. We brought on both sides. Jérôme de Tychey, one of the EIP's co-authors and a solo staker since Ethereum's genesis, makes the case that an unchecked staking ratio threatens the network's neutrality and security. Mike Silagadze, CEO of ether.fi, argues the fix is worse than the disease — that it would push out solo stakers, gut DeFi, and hand more power to the biggest institutional players it claims to guard against. At the center of it all: does Ethereum have a real problem with how much ETH is staked, or is this a solution in search of a crisis?Jérôme has a public bet on the table with a co-author. Mike has one of his own, worth a million dollars. Neither is backing down.Guests: Jérôme de Tychey (EIP-8363 co-author) | Mike Silagadze (CEO, ether.fi) Topics: Ethereum, EIP-8363, staking, issuance, solo stakers, DeFi, liquid staking tokens, ether.fi, Lido, Ethereum governance

Future of Finance Interview with Pavel Jakovlev at AMINA Bank, Artemiy Parshakov at P2P.org, Ray Dillet at Bitwise and Christopher Perkins at Franklin Templeton. As cryptocurrencies become a standard part of institutional portfolios, asset managers are increasingly focused on generating sustainable yield—without compromising custody, governance, or risk controls.Staking has emerged as a core mechanism to earn yield on proof-of-stake networks, and adoption is accelerating as custodians integrate staking services directly into secure custody frameworks. Beyond staking, certain assets—like Bitcoin—generate yield through lending, while yield-bearing Stablecoins are redefining how institutions earn returns on digital cash equivalents. Participants will discover how custodians serve as the gateway to secure, institutional-grade staking and lending, balancing asset safety with participation in yield-generating opportunities. The session highlights differences and overlaps between staking and lending, guiding institutions on opportunity assessment, risk management, and strategic decision-making in a rapidly evolving market.⭐ Read more about this interview: https://www.futureoffinance.biz/gener...Learn more and connect with Future of Finance:

This bonus episode of Public Keys was recorded live at Consensus. Host Jennifer Sanasie sits down with three guests at the center of crypto in the public markets. Grayscale's Krista Lynch breaks down how crypto ETFs have evolved from simple bitcoin access into index products, in-kind creation for crypto whales, and early staking. Morgan Stanley's Amy Oldenburg explains how MSBT became the firm's most successful ETF launch ever — $230 million in three and a half weeks at 14 bps — while the firm simultaneously rolls out spot crypto trading across its $7 trillion wealth platform. And BitGo CEO Mike Belshe joins four months into his IPO to discuss the firm's OCC charter and why the Clarity Act matters more as a legislative stamp of approval than anything it changes on day one. - Timecodes: 00:00 Welcome to Public Keys: A Bonus Episode from Consensus 00:55 Grayscale's Krista Lynch Joins Public Keys 01:30 Eight Single-Token ETFs and the Rise of Crypto Indexing 02:20 In-Kind ETF Creation Brings Crypto Whales to Wall Street 04:00 Why Crypto Whales Want ETF Exposure 06:00 Advisor Education and the State of Crypto Onboarding 07:00 Staking Comes to the ETF Wrapper 08:30 Morgan Stanley's Amy Oldenburg Joins Public Keys 09:00 The 50 bps Spot Crypto Trading Fee 10:00 Top-of-House Alignment at Morgan Stanley 11:00 What Was Happening Behind the Scenes in 2024 12:30 MSBT: $230M and Morgan Stanley's Most Successful ETF Launch Ever 14:00 Over-Hyped or Underrated: $1B in MSBT by Year-End 16:00 BitGo CEO Mike Belshe Joins Public Keys 17:00 Four Months Into Life as a Public Company 17:30 The Institutionalization of Crypto Infrastructure 18:30 Why the Genius and Clarity Acts Matter 20:30 Coinbase Still Charges Retail 130 bps 22:30 BitGo's OCC Charter and the Future of Reserve Banking 23:30 What the Clarity Act Actually Changes 24:30 TradFi Is Waiting for the Legislative Stamp of Approval - This episode was hosted by Jennifer Sanasie.

Mike Silva is an Investment Manager at CalPERS, where he has spent more than a decade leading the institution's Emerging Manager Program across private equity, private debt, and real estate. He focuses on sourcing, evaluating, and advocating for emerging managers internally while helping shape CalPERS' broader approach to middle-market and venture investing.Topics:Where Emerging Managers Should Focus FirstNailing the 30-Minute First MeetingTimeline from First Meeting to CommitmentSeeding vs. Staking vs. Direct Investment...and so much more.Top TakeawaysIf you can't explain your firm in 2 minutes, LPs will move on. Emerging Managers need to quickly distill their team, strategy, and differentiator into a narrative that sticks. LPs like Mike are meeting hundreds of managers a year. Long-winded explanations don't just waste time but signal a lack of clarity. The managers who cut through can clearly explain four things: who they are, what they invest in, why they're differentiated, and why it matters to that LP specifically. LPs value predictability as much as performance. Mike made the point that trust starts forming well before capital is committed. LPs are watching whether managers actually execute what they said they would do: hiring the right people, closing the deals they discussed, and staying consistent with the strategy they pitched. Every update becomes proof of credibility.Your IC dynamics matter more than you think. Mike shared that when evaluating Emerging Managers, he spends significant time understanding team dynamics: how long the partners have worked together, how investment committee decisions are made, whether there's healthy debate, and how disagreement is handled. Strong track records matter, but LPs are also underwriting the decision-making culture that produced them.About CalPERSCalPERS is one of the largest public pension funds in the world, managing retirement and health benefits for California public employees, retirees, and their families. Through its Emerging Manager Program, CalPERS invests across private equity, private debt, and real estate, backing smaller and differentiated managers it believes can generate long-term outperformance and expand access to overlooked areas of the market.
