During the war in Vietnam, thousands of young men served as conscientious objector medics. They had been certified by their local draft boards as noncombatants, but many would know intense combat nonetheless. Without weapons training, they ran through the infantry lines, answering the desperate call, "Medic!" Many displayed exemplary heroism even at the cost of their lives. With the end of the draft, we will never see their like again. Conscientious Objectors at War: The Vietnam War's Forgotten Medics (Texas Tech University Press, 2025) tells their stories within the background context of pacifist churches in America. It is the first book exclusively devoted to such men, who emerged initially from the historic peace churches--Quakers, Brethren, Mennonites--and from Seventh-day Adventists, who would comprise roughly half of all conscientious objector medics serving in the Vietnam War. From World War II on, growing numbers of men from mainstream churches made the same choices, and after a Supreme Court decision in 1965, so too would men who claimed humanist and secular justification. The pages contain the stories of pantheists and Catholics, among others from the peace traditions. Gary Kulik, who also served as a conscientious-objector medic, interweaves his own story into those he recounts, stories of fierce combat, stumbling accidents, moments of fleeting honor and ever-present death. Gary Kulik served as a deputy director of the Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, near Wilmington, Delaware. Previously, he was a department head and assistant director of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History and the editor of American Quarterly. We discuss: How speaking the language of scientists helps Arkady build real trust with founders. The AI tournament model he uses to identify 300 hidden human needs. Focusing on problems first, then funding an index of possible solutions. What he looks for in both founders and LPs. Why honesty beats hype every time. Why DPI is the only VC metric that actually matters. Quotes from David: “You don't prove your worth as a VC until you return capital to your LPs. DPI is the only metric that matters.” “The VC game is full of false positives—in evaluating companies and in how LPs evaluate VCs.” “The best thing an investor can do is give a quick yes; the next best is a quick no. Lingering maybes are the worst.” “Our technical unlock was agentic AI—it lets us evaluate hundreds of emerging needs for humanity in days, not years.” “We want to be the first check because what matters most is building deep trust with the founder, not just valuation.” “If you sold LPs on a strategy and you quietly abandon it, that's a breach of trust—it's like cheating in a marriage.” “A lot of people go into VC for ego or fast money. They won't survive. This is a long, emotionally volatile game.” “Stop wasting your life and start making a difference. If you're a founder, build what only you can build.” “There's nothing wrong with saying no—it's how you say it that matters.” “The founder's mistake is assuming your investors will make money just because you do.” “Great founders don't oversell—they're clear, calm, and self-aware.” Important Quotes from the podcast on Business and Entrepreneurship There is no skill called “business.” Avoid business magazines and business classes. - Naval Ravikant You have to work up to the point where you can own equity in a business. You could own equity as a small shareholder where you bought stock. You could also own it as an owner where you started the company. Ownership is really important. Everybody who really makes money at some point owns a piece of a product, a business, or some IP. That can be through stock options if you work at a tech company. That's a fine way to start.

Today is Tuesday, September 17th and Happy heavenly Birthday Hank Williams 09.17.24 –BIRTHDAY – HANK WILLIAMS*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Suspect Arrested in Marietta Murder Campbell High Receives $50K Donation for Music Technology Program Pedestrian Killed Crossing Mableton Parkway All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Suspect Arrested in Marietta Murder An Atlanta man, Tavion Taylor, 21, was arrested and charged with the murder of De'shaune Hall, 21, in a Friday night shooting in Marietta. Taylor faces charges of felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during a crime. The shooting occurred around 10:15 p.m. outside an apartment building on Bentley Road near Interstate 75. Responding officers found Hall with multiple gunshot wounds, but he later died despite aid efforts. Witness statements led detectives to identify Taylor as the suspect. After a brief foot chase, Taylor was arrested at his Cumberland apartment by Cobb County officers early Saturday morning. Police from Marietta and Cobb County collaborated effectively, securing warrants for searches of both Hall's and Taylor's residences. STORY 2: Campbell High Receives $50K Donation for Music Technology Program Campbell High School in Smyrna received a $50,000 donation to create a music technology program, thanks to a partnership between the Give a Note Foundation and Huber Engineered Material. The donation was presented during a morning assembly attended by Cobb Superintendent Chris Ragsdale, who praised the opportunity for students to engage in music technology. The program will teach students to use production equipment typically found in music studios. Already popular, 176 students have enrolled, and additional equipment donations have been provided. The event featured performances by the school's marching band and a surprise appearance by The BoyKinz. This initiative is part of a three-year investment by Give a Note, aiming to enhance music education in schools nationwide. Campbell is one of two high schools benefiting from this program, alongside Woodburn High School in Oregon. STORY 3: Pedestrian Killed Crossing Mableton Parkway A 36-year-old man was struck and killed by a car while crossing Mableton Parkway near Community Drive in Mableton on Saturday night. The incident occurred around 10:49 p.m., and the pedestrian was not using a crosswalk. A white 2020 Nissan Murano was the vehicle involved in the accident, and the driver stopped following the collision. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by the Cobb County Medical Examiner's Office. Authorities have not yet released the pedestrian's identity as they await family notification. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact Cobb Police at 770-499-3987. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: DRAKE (COBB) STORY 4: Georgia Kicking Off Annual National Child Passenger Safety Week The Governor's Office of Highway Safety, in collaboration with the Georgia Department of Public Health, is promoting child passenger safety during National Child Passenger Safety Week from September 15-21. The campaign aims to educate parents and caregivers about the correct installation and use of car seats and booster seats to prevent child fatalities in car crashes. Educational events across Georgia will provide guidance on choosing the right seat based on a child's age, height, and weight, and ensure seats are registered for recall notifications. Properly installed car seats significantly reduce injury risks, and parents are encouraged to attend these events or visit fitting stations to ensure their children's safety. The initiative emphasizes compliance with Georgia state laws requiring appropriate restraints for children under eight and highlights the critical role of car seats in saving lives. STORY 5: Georgia abortion ban comes under fire at Senate hearing An Atlanta woman, Mackenzie Kulik, testified before a U.S. Senate subcommittee about her experience with Georgia's restrictive abortion law, which bans most abortions after six weeks. Kulik, facing a dangerous pregnancy, was advised to rest and hydrate, as her case didn't qualify for exceptions under the law. The hearing, led by Sen. Jon Ossoff, highlighted the law's risks to women's health and its impact on the availability of OB-GYNs in Georgia. Dr. Carrie Cwiak criticized the law for increasing maternal mortality and forcing healthcare providers to turn away patients. The hearing underscored the broader political debate on abortion, with ongoing calls for federal legislation to protect abortion rights, contrasting with arguments for state-level decision-making. We'll be back in a moment Break: INGLES 7 (ROASTING VEGTABLES) STORY 6: IRS-CI Atlanta Field Office Reminds Sports Fans Illegal Gambling is Criminal Offense As the 2024-2025 NFL season kicks off, the IRS Criminal Investigation Atlanta Field Office is cautioning sports fans about the legal risks of illegal gambling, which generates over $700 million annually in the U.S. From 2020 to mid-2024, the IRS-CI launched 151 investigations into illegal gambling, leading to 71 convictions with average sentences exceeding two years. Illegal gambling funds criminal activities, and despite legalized sports betting in many states, it remains prohibited in Georgia and Alabama.

Sleeping with your baby-- we've probably all done it once or twice, but is it actually safe? This week we're speaking with Taylor Kulik. Taylor is an occupational therapist and holistic sleep and parenting educator who developed a passion for helping new mothers overcome their sleep-related fears and helping them get back to trusting in their intuition. She provides radical re-education about how babies and children should sleep, and offers holistic and responsive sleep support to parents who do not want to sleep train. I know the topic of sleep can feel extremely sensitive to many, so know that this information is provided with love and respect, and it's given as an option for those who want or need it. Please remember the opinions of my guest may not necessarily reflect my own and vice versa, and this show is not medical advice-- it's an educational tool-- so continue to take empowered responsibility for your health and your family. Episode Roundup Our communities are no longer designed in a way that is supportive to childrearing as a whole, truly. We're extremely silo'd and so unbelievably busy. On top of this, mothers are inundated with the message that they can have it all and they can do it all. They can lose the baby weight, sleep all night, work all day and come home and take care of their home and babies with love and compassion. This just isn't realistic. When we realize that we've been fed a lie, we can slowly begin to untangle ourselves from it, step by step. One of the best first steps that we may be able to make is reconsidering how we view infant sleep, as Taylor shared. The lack of safety in sleeping with our babies comes with not being provided information on how to do it. There is, however, information out there to help you respond to your baby's nighttime needs, while also supporting your ability to get more rest, too. Taylor is doing a phenomenal job of sharing this information. And finally, let's remember that we are our child's regulator. We get to be our child's regulator-- their safe, snuggly, trusted space. If we can approach this with the perspective that this not a curse, but a gift-- we can enjoy these young years, acknowledge that there will sometimes be struggle... there will sometimes be difficulty, give ourselves and our babies grace. In this week's episode of the Balancing Chaos podcast, Kelley welcomes Taylor Kulik, an advocate for families who choose not to sleep train their infants. Taylor is an occupational therapist turned holistic sleep consultant with a passion for non-toxic living, homeschooling, and snuggling babies all night. Years ago, Taylor was struggling with trusting what she knew was best for her children, and was consumed by fear-based parenting. This experience led to her passion for sharing her experiences and education with other parents who are going through the same journey to help lead them from fear to freedom.Today, Kelley and Taylor discuss the concept of self-soothing and how babies are not capable of self-regulation. Instead, babies are meant to co-regulate and borrow calm from a calm caregiver. They discuss how certain types of sleep training can raise cortisol levels in infants, insights on infant sleep and how to bed share safely, how co-sleeping benefits mental health for both parents and children, how to transition children into their own beds, and the most common reasons beyond children that adults aren't sleeping well or deal with insomnia.
