This week's Focus Text is the Parable of the Widow and the Unjust Judge. The widow is persistent in her pursuit of justice even though the judge does not care about justice, people or even God. Pastor Stephanie invites us to consider times when we have had to be persistent like the widow and at other times when we are more like the judge who relents to someone who won't rest until they get their way. If the unjust judge finally gave in to the woman, how much more will our God, who is full of justice & grace, answer our pleas from the depths of despair with AGAPe love!

In this message, Pastor Rhonda Davis uses the Parable of the Unjust Judge from Luke 18 to illustrate that God is a just and loving Father who is moved by the persistent, heartfelt cries of His children. She emphasizes that while an earthly judge may be motivated by selfishness, God delights in our prayers and "runs to the cry" of those who are hurting or in need. Ultimately, the message encourages believers to never lose heart, teaching that their persistent petitions arise like incense before the throne of a God who is eager to intervene. Psalm 61:2–4 – The foundational call to be led to the "rock that is higher than I" when the heart is overwhelmed. Luke 18:1–8 – The Parable of the Persistent Widow and the Unjust Judge, emphasizing that we should always pray and not lose heart. Isaiah 40:27–28 – A reminder that God does not faint or grow weary, and our "just claim" is never passed over. Proverbs 15:8 – Highlighting that the prayer of the upright is God's "delight." Matthew 7:7 – The command to ask, seek, and knock with persistence. Psalm 141:1–2 – David's plea for his prayers to be set before God as "incense." Revelation 5:8 – The heavenly vision of golden bowls full of incense, which are the "prayers of the saints." Hebrews 2:17–18 – The description of Jesus as a faithful High Priest who is able to "succor" (run to the aid of) those who are tempted and suffering. Psalm 18:6 & 116:1 – Declarations of God hearing the cry of the distressed.

In Luke 18:1–8, Jesus tells the Parable of the Persistent Widow to remind us to pray always and not lose heart. I love this story because it's both honest and funny—the unjust judge finally gives in, not because he cares, but because the widow simply won't quit! Jesus uses that image to show us something powerful about faith: if persistence can move someone who doesn't care, how much more will it move the heart of a God who loves us deeply? Prayer isn't about bothering God—it's about trusting Him enough to keep coming back. Even when we don't see answers right away, we keep praying, keep showing up, and keep believing. So today, whatever you're carrying, don't give up. Be like that widow—faithful, persistent, and full of hope—because our God hears, loves, and will move in His perfect time.Shameless plug: here's a link to Method(ist) to the Madness, our new, hopefully entertaining podcast about church history. - https://methodisttothemadness.buzzsprout.com/Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. Luke 18: 1-8 Susan Scott preached on the unusual prayer practices of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke. Jesus was steeped in the prayers of the Jewish people, but Luke recounts that he Jesus instructed his followers to pray in a different way, including for those that persecute you. The prayers of Jesus in Luke can be divided into two types. We pray for the glory of God's name, work, and kingdom, and we pray for our business, including our daily bread, the forgiveness of sins, and protection from temptation. Susan reminds us that Jesus also told the Parable of the Unjust Judge to remind us to always pray and not give up, just like the woman pursuing justice, and that God is always a just judge. Of course, wouldn't it be easier to have faith if God instantly answered our prayers instead of us having to wait? It would be nice but that places God in the role of being our servant instead of our lord. Oddly, when the disciples asked for more faith, Jesus told them it already takes very little faith to speak miracles into existence. Jesus wants us to not focus on amounts but rather on the love and greatness of God that can enable us to do the impossible. With this in mind, we must relentlessly pray with a steadfast faith and hope in God's goodness, justice, and mercy.

Luke 18:1-8 presents a parable, alternately named the parable of the Unjust Judge and the Persistent Widow. Jesus deliberately parodies the reality of God as a faithful judge. While we might doubt earthly authority, God has always been faithful and remains faithful. Nonetheless, we often lose hope. We look at the world and don't see justice, righteousness, or faithfulness or we forget that God is faithful and so we do whatever is right in our own eyes. Until the day of the Lord comes, we must not lose hope and become faithless.

The parable of the Widow and the Unjust Judge. I'll start here by comparing Jesus' parables to the stories we read to kids at bedtime. Yes, they're a lot alike. Let's have some fun with it. This parable really does make for a good children's book. Of course, we have all kinds of adult sized questions after hearing this story. No, we may not have any answers for these questions - but I always think it's a good idea to at least ask them - acknowledge them. Jesus says that this story is about praying and not giving up. Not losing heart. What does it look like to lose heart? Let's imagine ourselves as the widow. What happens when we pray like the widow? Maybe the real miracle of prayer is that it changes us - makes us into the kind of people for whom injustice is never normal - makes us into the kind of people who keep showing up in the world where and when it's most needed. Jesus then connects this to the word "faith." Faith and prayer have a lot to do with each other, I think. Maybe faith is the jet fuel for our prayers. Or maybe it's the other way around. Maybe our prayers are the jet fuel for our faith. Whichever way it goes, faith - a trust that God is NOT like the judge - faith is the thing that keeps us showing up. Parables are a significant part of Jesus's teaching. These brilliant stories paint a picture of life in the kingdom, teaching us about God, ourselves, and the Lord's presence and activity in the world. But they are not easy. Rather than give us simple platitudes and truisms, Jesus challenges us with parables. They are intended to draw us in. Jesus wants us to wrestle with them, to walk around with, meditate and have conversations about them. In this series, we will dig into the context of parables from Luke's Gospel. We will consider the picture Jesus is painting of God's kingdom, and we will engage these stories through the spiritual practice of visio divina (with some original art from our community). This week, we examined a parable that is often misunderstood, the parable of the widow and the unjust judge. Hitch helped us to consider its framing around prayer, the parable's focus on injustice, and the question of faith. In the end, we are reminded of "how much more" our Father in heaven will give to his children who dwell in the kingdom. We practiced visio divina together with this paining from the artist Ronnie Farmer Jr. If The Practice Church is your home community, please join the Core Team. Read OnlineThe Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says. Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them? I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily.” Luke 18:6–8It's interesting that Jesus uses the example of a dishonest judge to illustrate the importance of praying to God, calling out to Him day and night for justice. As the parable goes, this judge cared little about a widow in his town who continually came to him asking for a just decision. He felt as though she was continually bothering him. Because she was so persistent, the judge thought to himself, “...because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.” Jesus' conclusion from this parable is quoted above. The simple lesson we ought to learn from this parable is that we must be persistent in prayer. God will always answer our prayers, seeing to it that “justice is done” speedily. But many people have prayed and prayed and prayed for some situation, prayed even for justice, and it appeared that God did not answer their prayer. Thus, some may question the promise of Jesus that persistent prayer will always be answered and justice always be rendered. If this is your experience, it is essential that you remind yourself of two things. First, Jesus' words are true. When we persevere in prayer and trust in God, He hears us and answers. This is our Lord's unwavering promise. But secondly, the “justice” that God delivers may often be different than the justice we expect. It may be that we want someone to pay for a wrong they did to us, but after praying fervently, our expectation is not met by our Lord. For this reason, it is essential that we know that God answers every prayer we pray, but in accord with His perfect will and wisdom. Therefore, God's view of justice at times may be very different than ours. At times, His justice is satisfied by His invitation to us to show mercy in abundance. True mercy always satisfies justice.Take, for example, the case of someone speaking in a rude manner to you. If you offer that situation to our Lord, He will enter in and provide His grace for you to deal with it in accord with His will. Perhaps He will soften the other person's heart so that they apologize, or perhaps, if they don't apologize and their heart is not softened, then God's answer to your prayer will be to give you the grace of humility so that you can love that person despite their unrepentance. Regardless of the way our Lord intervenes, the fact remains that He will intervene and enable you to fulfill His perfect will. If, however, your prayer is that the person be held accountable and condemned, then you are trying to tell God what to do, and He will not accede to your request. All of our prayer must ultimately be for the fulfillment of God's perfect will in accord with His wisdom.Reflect, today, upon how completely you trust in God. Do you know, with certainty, that He will answer every prayer that you fervently pray with faith in accord with His divine will? Believing this is freeing and enables you to live more fully in union with Him. If there is some issue with which you struggle right now, even some apparent injustice, then entrust it to our Lord, day and night without ceasing, and know that His grace will guide you as He answers you in accord with His will. My all-wise Lord, Your will is perfect in all things, and You always bestow Your grace upon me when I pray without ceasing. Please give me a trusting Heart, dear Lord, so that I will never waver in my hope that You will always answer my prayers in accord with Your will. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2024 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Read Online“Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate, make an effort to settle the matter on the way; otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the constable, and the constable throw you into prison. I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.” Luke 12:57–59The Church Fathers offer many different interpretations of this passage. Among them, Saint Bede says that our “opponent” can be seen as the Word of God, in the sense that the Word of God makes war upon our weaknesses and sins. When we listen to the Word of God, our Lord will convict us of our faults so that we can reconcile our lives with the Truth of the Word of God Himself. When you think about God's holy Word, in its entirety, what most convicts you? Sometimes we try to downplay such personal convictions. We rationalize our actions and dismiss what God is saying to us. Are there any teachings of Jesus that you recall that have truly stung you to the heart? If so, this is a grace, and it's an opportunity to fulfill the lesson from our Lord taught in the passage above. God does not convict our hearts so as to condemn us. Rather, He convicts us, as an opponent to our sin, so that we can “make an effort to settle the matter on the way.” The conscience is a wonderful gift from our Lord and can be likened to this passage above. It is a form of courtroom where our Lord desires not to have to issue punishment upon us. Instead, He desires that we engage His holy Word, listen to what He says, and settle our sin by repenting immediately.Among the many lessons taught by our Lord, it is often the lesson that jumps out at us, even in a startling way, that we need to pay attention to the most. God often brings His most urgent teachings to us by causing us to feel a sense of guilt that cannot be denied. If we listen to these convictions, then we will not have any need to stand before the Judge. But if we do not, if we bury these convictions, downplay them and ignore them, then our Lord will find it necessary to keep at us. We will begin to experience His judgment, and we will see the effects of being out of His good graces. And in the end, if we fail to repent of the more serious sins in our lives, then we will even be held accountable for the smallest of sins. We will be required to “pay the last penny.”Reflect, today, upon the idea that the Word of God, all that our Lord has taught us, is the opponent to the sin in your soul. This good and holy opponent wants only what is best for you. Commit yourself to an ongoing reading of God's holy Word so that you will be continually disposed to hear all that God wants to say to you and so that you will be able to reconcile with our Lord before He is compelled to issue forth His judgments. My most merciful Judge, You desire that I listen to Your holy Word, revealed through Scripture, so as to receive Your most merciful conviction of my sin. I pray that I will be open to always hear all that You desire to say to me so that I can respond with generosity and trust, reconciling with You and others continually through my journey in life. Enliven my conscience with Your holy Word, dear Lord. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2024 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved.
