On the docket: incline stretch boards for calf and Achilles work (the evidence is real, but eccentric loading beats passive stretching for most underlying issues), packaged Rice Krispie Treats as race fuel (the macros check out — 27 to 30 grams of carbs, glucose plus fructose, low fiber — but the chewability at mile 50 is another story), Ziploc bags in ice bandanas (hard pass: the evaporation is the whole point), hybrid athletes as a category (the jury is out, but the coaches aren't your girls if high rocks is your thing), run clubs (yes, with a firm caveat on effort), and microdosing during ultras (the research case for decriminalization is strong; the research case for running 100 miles on psilocybin is still pending).The listener Q this week tackles one of the most common rules in running: you don't need to fuel for efforts under 90 minutes. For high-intensity efforts like a hard half marathon, the case for fueling is stronger than the 90-minute rule suggests — and the practical takeaways are in the episode.The back half is a full race debrief on Chianti. Zoë ran an hour faster than last year and still came in 13th. TJ walks through how to approach a post-race analysis when the headline result doesn't tell the full story — and how Zoë's coach surfaced a key data point she almost missed entirely: cardiac drift. In 2025, Zoë's cardiac drift was 9.54% over the course of the race. In 2026, it was negative 1.39%, meaning she was actually able to access higher heart rates at the end of the race — a direct signal of aerobic durability built by keeping easy days genuinely easy, week after week. The conversation covers what cardiac drift actually measures, why gray zone training works against this adaptation, and what the terrain-specific limiter was that explains the placement gap.

La nouvelle année commence en force avec Anthony Fontaine, un gars qui incarne l'aventure sous toutes ses formes. Yann est un sportif depuis son jeune âge.Il a touché un peu à tout, le seul sport qui est resté de son enfance c'est le hockey.La course à pied est arrivé un peu sur le tard pour lui. Il organise d'ailleurs une course dans sa ville. (Voir la fin du texte pour le lien.)Il habite près de Rimouski, donc il a la chance d'être relativement près de la Gaspésie … son terrain de jeu favori.Il est un adepte des gros défis.Après avoir fait l'Utmb et les 150 miles d'Hélène Dumais en semi autonomie: il est toujours à l'affût des défis costaud.Quand l'Utcc a annoncé son 100 miles, c'est vite devenu son plan A de 2024.Il a décidé d'ajouter à ça, celui de Gaspésie 100 à la mi-juin.Utcc, (mi-août) premier 100 miles très très costaud avec 9600 mètres de dénivelé et ses 170km.Et pour terminer la saison, celui de Forillon, vers la fin septembre.Il me raconte que l'Utcc est plus difficile que l'Utmb!Un athlète fort inspirant rempli d'humilité et qui n'a pas froid aux yeux!Bonne écoute!Voici le lien pour le défi anaclois!https://www.facebook.com/defianaclois?mibextid=LQQJ4d

Au menu : immersion sonore dans l'Ultra-trail des Chic-Chocs 2024 avec ses tous nouveaux parcours de 170 et 88 km, suivi d'un retour sur les performances de nos Québécois au Championnat canadien de course en sentier à Squamish. J'étais en Gaspésie pour l'UTCC et je vous raconte ce week-end historique qui a vu naître ce qui peut déjà être décrit comme le plus difficile 100 miles à l'Est des Rocheuses. Armé de mon micro, je suis allé chercher des extraits ici et là, dans lesquels vous pourrez entendre Éric Lévesque, Yannick Bernard, Juliane Fisette, Kevin Ouellet et Téo Sénécat. Découvrez le parcours de Samuël Poher, un autre québécois nous revenant du marathon de Philadelphie avec un excellent chrono de 2:24:30. Samuël est un rare type de coureur excellant autant sur la piste et la route que sur les sentiers, avec des records personnels de 8:27 sur 3000m, 14:34 sur 5000m, 30:12 sur 10 000m et 2:23:45 sur marathon, ainsi que plusieurs victoires en trail, notamment au 20k UTHC 2023, 23k UTCC 2023, 65k UTHC 2022 et 50k trail du Grand-duc 2021. Il a aussi représenté le Canada aux championnats mondiaux de trail, terminant 65e sur 267 au 45k et vise définitivement à répéter l'expérience en 2025 tout en demeurant sélectif dans ses choix de course afin de réduire son empreinte écologique! Cette semaine, je reçois sur le podcast Geneviève Asselin-Demers, une athlète qui a fait une entrée remarquée dans le monde de la course à pied en remportant le Marathon de Montréal en 2015. En 2022, elle a transitionné vers la course en sentier, un sport dans lequel elle se démarque. Le week-end dernier, j'ai participé à l'Ultra-trail des Chic-Chocs, une course aussi rude que magnifique, avec ses sentiers techniques et ses plateaux rocheux en haute altitude, au cœur de l'unique Parc national de la Gaspésie. Boue intense, cocktail météo et coyotes agressifs sont venus ajouter un peu de piquant à cette 4e édition sur laquelle il y a beaucoup à dire! Et ça tombe bien, car j'ai eu le plaisir de m'entretenir avec une douzaine de personnes, avec une conclusion en compagnie du directeur de course Éric Lévesque et de la coordonnatrice Audrée Archambault, qui m'ont révélé plusieurs scoops sur leur édition 2024! Vous pourrez entendre Geneviève Asselin-Demers qui a remporté le 45 km avec un nouveau record du parcours, David Bombardier et Maude Cyr qui ont complété le 101 km en vivant de grands hauts et de grands bas, Mélodie Gilbert qui était à l'aube de son voyage à l'UTMB pour l'OCC, Christopher Lévesque-Savard qui a fracassé le record du parcours du 45 km, Margaux Narbey Loustaunau qui est responsable de l'équipe de bénévoles, Samuël Poher qui s'est attaqué au doublé 23 km/26 km, Virginie Savard qui était présente avec toute sa famille après avoir remporté son dossard dans un concours Pas sorti du bois, Richard Taillon qui était là pour se préparer pour le TOR130, et finalement, Josh Tremblay qui avait participé à l'épisode pré-UTCC. Un groupe hétérogène qui sont tous venus chercher des choses différentes dans leur expérience à l'Ultra-trail des Chic-Chocs. L'Ultra-trail des Chic-Chocs approche et cette semaine, on jase avec deux étoiles montantes du trail québécois qui participeront à la course qui se tient dans le Parc national de la Gaspésie du 18 au 20 août prochain. Valérie est une étudiante à la maîtrise en arts visuels et elle plante des arbres dans l'Ouest canadien depuis une décennie. Dans les deux dernières années, elle s'est mise à la course en sentier et les résultats sont impressionnants : victoire sur l'Ultranza Ultra-trail 20 km (2021), victoire sur le Trail du Massif du Sud 21 km (2021), victoire et record du parcours sur l'UTHC 42 St-Siméon (2022), victoire sur le Béluga Ultra Trail 30 km (2022) et 4e position sur la mythique Speedgoat 50k en Utah (2023). En Gaspésie, elle s'élancera sur sa plus longue distance à vie, soit le 62 km Cascapédia. Josh, de son côté, en sera à sa troisième participation à l'UTCC, après une impressionnante 2e en place en 2022 sur le 23 km Mont-Albert. Il est présentement étudiant en administration des affaires au Collège militaire royal du Canada, dans le but de devenir Sergent d'infanterie. Il revient tout juste de plusieurs semaines dans le nord où il a combattu les feux de forêts, et s'alignera sur le 26 km Xalibu. On discute de préparation, de nutrition, d'objectifs et bien sûr, des conditions extrêmes qu'imposent les Chic-Chocs, cette barrière impénétrable au coeur des Appalaches. Cet épisode est la première partie d'un programme double dédié à l'UTCC. La seconde partie sera enregistrée sur place, pendant l'événement. Eric Lévesque porte plusieurs chapeaux : enseignant d'éducation physique, coureur de trail et directeur de course pour l'Ultra-trail des Chic-Chocs. À travers ce nouvel épisode, on explore chacune des facettes de sa vie! Comme enseignant, il transmet sa passion de l'activité physique et marque la vie de nombreux adolescents. Comme coureur, Eric a rapidement progressé, tant sur route qu'en sentier, pour devenir un athlète de haut niveau qui monte régulièrement sur les podiums. On parle d'entraînement, de nutrition, de préparation... mais on aborde aussi un sujet hyper important dans la pratique de sport d'endurance : le repos. Finalement, comme directeur de course, Eric est impliqué depuis la première édition de l'Ultra-trail des Chic-Chocs, un événement qui en sera à sa 3e édition cette année. Dès l'annonce de sa création en 2018, l'UTCC a fait tourné les têtes parce que la course se tient dans le magnifique Parc national de la Gaspésie, sur des sentiers hyper techniques qui sillonnent les plus hauts sommets du Québec. Le parcours de 113 km s'inscrit déjà comme l'une des épreuves les plus difficiles au Québec, et j'en ai profité pour tenter de soutirer des informations secrètes à Eric, notamment au sujet d'un potentiel 100 miles.
