The Hidden Impact of College Major Selection on Admissions with Rick Clark

In this episode, Lisa and Rick discuss:How a student's choice of future intended major impacts their college admissions chancesThe role of holistic review in determining “Fit To Major” (FTM)The challenges students face when trying to change majors after admissionWhy flexibility is essential in the college application processKey Takeaways: Colleges often evaluate whether a student's academic choices and extracurricular activities align with their intended major, so applying without evidence of interest in that field can weaken an application, even at schools that do not directly admit by major. Some universities, particularly for highly competitive majors like computer science and business, have strict policies that prevent or limit students from switching into these programs after enrollment, making initial major selection a critical decision.Admissions officers look for patterns of demonstrated interest, expecting engineering applicants to take advanced math and science courses or business applicants to show entrepreneurial involvement, which helps determine if a student is truly prepared for their chosen major.Students who remain open to alternative entry pathways—such as summer admissions, starting at a different campus, or transferring later—increase their chances of reaching their academic and career goals, even if they don't initially get into their first-choice program.“The more kids can put themselves in a position where they have choices and options, the better off they're going to be.” – Rick ClarkAbout Rick Clark: Rick Clark is Georgia Tech's inaugural Executive Director for Strategic Student Access, leading efforts to expand enrollment, access, and affordability through key partnerships. Previously, he spent 15 years as AVP and Executive Director of Undergraduate Admission, strengthening Tech's brand, academic profile, and enrollment. At the same time, IECs often provide affordable hourly consultations or specific services like essay coaching. “[Your school counselor's letter] is the story behind your transcript, and it's the story behind your letters of recommendation.” – Megan RoseAbout Megan Rose: Megan Rose is a dedicated independent educational consultant with a background as both a high school social studies teacher and a school counselor at one of New Jersey's top public high schools. Play Episode Listen Later Feb 14, 2025 55:40

In this episode of Confessions of a Higher Ed CMO, host Jaime Hunt sits down with enrollment marketing expert Will Patch to tackle a critical issue in higher education—summer melt. They explore the key reasons why admitted students fail to enroll in the fall and share actionable strategies to combat melt before it happens. From financial aid misunderstandings to social anxieties, they discuss how institutions can proactively support students and improve yield. If you're looking for ways to refine your enrollment marketing and retention strategies, this conversation is packed with valuable insights.Key TakeawaysSummer melt is preventable—but strategies must start early, long before June.Financial barriers are a major cause of melt, especially for first-generation and low-income students. Clear, proactive financial aid communication is crucial.Social anxieties play a significant role—helping students feel a sense of belonging early can make a difference.Parents are key influencers—providing them with resources and guidance can help reinforce their student's decision.A strong anti-melt communication flow should include personalized outreach, two-way conversations, and content that addresses student concerns.Mental health support is critical—institutions should ensure students know where and how to access resources.Data-driven strategies should guide enrollment marketing efforts, ensuring institutions focus on what truly moves the needle. What Is Summer Melt and Why Does It Happen?Summer melt refers to the phenomenon where students commit to a college (through a deposit or other means) but ultimately do not enroll in the fall. While some melt is inevitable, a large portion is preventable with the right strategies. The two biggest contributors to melt are financial challenges and social anxieties.Financially, many students and families realize too late that they are unable to afford the costs, or they misunderstand their financial aid package. Socially, students may feel uncertain about their ability to succeed, worry about fitting in, or struggle with the idea of leaving home. These fears can be exacerbated if they don't feel connected to the institution before they arrive.Additionally, intentional melt has become more common, with students placing deposits at multiple institutions to keep their options open. This makes yield forecasting more difficult and further complicates enrollment strategies. How Can Institutions Reduce Summer Melt?1. Build Early Affinity and BelongingTo prevent summer melt, institutions must start fostering a sense of community early—before a student even deposits. Strategies include:Engaging students with faculty, staff, and current students through personalized outreach and virtual meetups.Encouraging early participation in campus events, online forums, and social media groups to build connections.Assigning student mentors or ambassadors to check in and answer questions. The more "sticky" relationships a student builds with a college—whether through faculty, staff, or peers—the less likely they are to back out before the fall.2. Improve Financial Aid CommunicationFinancial uncertainty is one of the biggest drivers of summer melt. Colleges need to ensure that students and families clearly understand their financial aid packages by:Providing easy-to-read financial aid letters that differentiate between grants, loans, and scholarships.Hosting financial literacy workshops or Q&A sessions for admitted students and parents.Reaching out proactively to discuss payment plans, emergency aid, and alternative financing options.Training admissions and financial aid teams to have direct, transparent conversations about affordability.Students who feel confident about their financial situation are far less likely to melt.3. Engage Parents in the Enrollment ProcessParents are one of the most influential factors in a student's college decision. Universities can strengthen parental involvement by:Creating parent-specific communications (emails, newsletters, or social media groups) with key deadlines and resources.Providing guides on how to support their student—covering topics like homesickness, academic struggles, and roommate conflicts.Encouraging parent participation in orientation programs to ease concerns. When parents feel informed and supported, they are more likely to encourage their student to follow through with enrollment.4. Monitor Engagement and Intervene EarlyTracking student engagement over the summer can help identify those at risk of melting. Indicators include:Not registering for orientation or choosing a later session.Failing to engage with emails, texts, or calls from the admissions team.Delays in completing financial aid paperwork or housing forms. For students showing signs of disengagement, schools should reach out directly—not just with automated emails, but with personal phone calls, text messages, and invitations to one-on-one conversations.5. Address Mental Health and Well-BeingAn increasing number of students experience mental health challenges, which can make the transition to college overwhelming. Universities should:Clearly communicate available mental health resources and counseling services.Provide peer support programs to connect incoming students with those who have successfully navigated similar challenges.Offer flexible support options, such as teletherapy or online workshops, for students who may not be able to access in-person services.Proactively addressing mental health concerns can help students feel more secure in their decision to enroll.6. Use Data to Guide StrategySuccessful melt prevention strategies rely on data-driven decision-making. Institutions should:Analyze past melt trends to identify common risk factors among students who didn't enroll.Use chatbot transcripts, search console data, and social media engagement to uncover student and parent concerns.Monitor response rates and adjust communication strategies based on engagement levels.By leveraging real-time data, institutions can proactively address student concerns before they result in summer melt.Guest Name: Will Patch, CEO of Clarity EMGuest Social: https://www.linkedin.com/in/willpatch/Guest Bio: After 9 years at Manchester University and 5 years at Niche where he developed the Enrollment Insights brand and established Niche's research and survey work Will has taken on the challenge of doing more work 1:1 with campuses. What is the Common Data Set? How can studying the CDS help with judging the value of a school? What does a school's graduation rate tell us about the school? How can the CDS be accessed and can anyone look at it? Are there schools that try to hide their data? MEET OUR GUEST Jane S. In this conversation, we hear from founder and Executive Director Joan Liu who discusses the origin and mission of Second Chance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping international students secure last-minute scholarships for higher education. The initiative began in response to a crisis where students lost their scholarships unexpectedly. The conversation emphasizes the importance of community support, innovative thinking, and the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of international education. Joan Liu is the Founder and Executive Director of Second Chance. She has been a college counselor for the past 22 years, across various public and private schools in the US, UK, Turkey, and Singapore. She has devoted her career to helping students go to college in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and other countries. An industry expert in financial aid and scholarships, she is a fierce advocate of international students seeking access to higher education. Joan is known for her work in 2018 when she mobilized the Nepal Justice League, a pro-bono team of counselors to support the 60 Nepali students who had lost their scholarships from the University of Texas at Tyler (due to a budget error on UT Tyler's part). She galvanized a global movement amongst the international counseling community, and she and her team re-seat 56 students at new universities in the US, Canada, Middle East, and East Asia, with 10+ million in financial aid and scholarships, and raised 180K in gap funding - after the US cycle had finished that year. Joan has been the recipient of industry awards: NACAC's Rising Star Award (2016); International ACAC's Distinguished Service Award (2017); CIS's Peggy Templeton Award, an international award recognizing one counselor in the world annually (2017). In 2021, she and the Nepal Justice League team were awarded NACAC's Joyce E Smith Award, an award given to those who “have improved the field of education and the way students are served” (2020). In 2021, she served on the President's Alliance for Higher Education and Immigration Pathways for Refugees Task Force, for the US. In this episode recorded live at NACAC, Mallory sits down with Troy Singer, Digital Marketing Specialist at Ring Digital and co-host of the Higher Ed Marketer Podcast. As they wrap up their time at the NACAC conference, the conversation dives into Troy's personal use of artificial intelligence (AI) for enhancing his happiness, confidence, and daily effectiveness. The discussion focuses on how AI can be integrated into both professional and personal life to improve productivity and streamline tasks.Key Takeaways:AI can enhance personal happiness and confidence by helping manage daily tasks and communications more effectively.Tools like Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Firefly's Notetaker can simplify tasks, from meal planning to managing emails and meetings.Custom GPTs are easy to create and can be highly effective for personal productivity, such as automating responses or managing to-do lists.Troy's AI-powered personal assistant project aims to integrate Outlook, Salesforce, and ChatGPT to monitor emails, prioritize tasks, and streamline communication.AI helps professionals not only be more productive at work but also find balance and joy in their personal lives. What is Troy's perspective on using AI for personal happiness and productivity?Troy is a strong advocate for using AI to boost both personal happiness and productivity. He explains that AI helps him manage daily tasks more efficiently, boosting his confidence in managing his professional and personal life. He highlights how, in the past, people were encouraged to figure things out independently before asking for help, but with AI, individuals can now ask for assistance in navigating scenarios more effectively.Troy uses AI tools like Perplexity for quick and real-time answers, ChatGPT for customized responses, and Firefly's Notetaker to help him stay present during meetings. For him, these tools act as digital mentors that help streamline his work and enhance his personal life, making him a more effective and confident individual. What are Troy's favorite AI tools, and how does he use them?Troy mentions that he regularly uses about 10 AI platforms, but his top three are:Perplexity – A smarter alternative to Google, providing real-time, in-depth information. Troy uses it to handle 80% of his queries, getting up-to-date, detailed answers faster than traditional search engines.ChatGPT – Troy has created several custom GPTs, which act as personal assistants in various tasks. He uses them for writing notes, crafting professional responses, and enhancing communication.Firefly's Notetaker – This tool helps Troy stay present during meetings by automatically taking notes and integrating them into Salesforce. It also generates reports tailored to his team and superior's preferences. These tools help Troy streamline his workflow, allowing him to focus on more critical tasks and maintain a high level of productivity. What is Troy's AI-powered “masterpiece” project?Troy is working on building an AI-powered personal assistant to help manage his professional life more effectively. His project will integrate Outlook, Salesforce, and ChatGPT to monitor emails, suggest responses, and prioritize tasks in real time. The goal is to create a system that will scan incoming emails, run them through ChatGPT for suggested responses, and prioritize them based on importance. The assistant will also use platforms like Power Automate and Microsoft's To Do to automate and track tasks.Troy's vision is to build a personalized assistant similar to Iron Man's “Jarvis,” but he plans to name it after a female figure. In this special episode recorded live at NACAC, we chat with Derek Faasse, Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Capital University, about the evolving pathways to leadership in higher education. As a presenter and planning committee member for next year's NACAC conference in Columbus, Derek shares insights on how aspiring leaders can navigate their careers, the challenges facing admissions professionals today, and the opportunities that come with leadership in higher education.Key TakeawaysPathways to Leadership Vary: There are many different routes to leadership, whether through staying at the same institution or relocating across the country to find new opportunities.Leadership in Higher Ed Faces Unique Challenges: Enrollment cliffs, the Supreme Court's decisions, and industry changes are driving many admissions professionals to explore roles outside of higher ed.Mentorship and Lifelong Learning Matter: Seeking mentorship from both inside and outside of your institution, and committing to continuous learning, are key to progressing into leadership roles. What leadership pathways exist in higher education admissions?Derek Faasse's presentation at NACAC focuses on the many ways admissions professionals can step into leadership roles. From those who move across the country for new opportunities to others who work their way up at their alma mater, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to career growth in higher education. In fact, Fossey noted that director positions in admissions are on the rise, but there's a gap in leadership readiness that aspiring directors must be prepared to fill. Why are there so many open director positions in higher education admissions?Derek attributes the increase in job openings to several factors, including the ongoing brain drain in higher education. Many professionals are leaving for roles in the ed-tech space or outside the sector altogether due to the pressures of enrollment declines and legislative changes. This shift, however, creates opportunities for rising professionals to step into leadership roles, offering a chance to reshape the field. How can aspiring leaders prepare for the next step in their careers?Faasse emphasizes the importance of mentorship and continuous learning. Aspiring leaders need to actively seek out guidance from current directors and industry professionals, including those on the vendor side of higher ed. It's also essential to cultivate skills and confidence along the way. According to Derek, aspiring leaders should embrace a mindset of lifelong learning, consistency, and growth to move ahead in their careers. - - - -Connect With Our Co-Hosts:Mallory Willsea https://www.linkedin.com/in/mallorywillsea/https://twitter.com/mallorywillseaSeth Odell https://www.linkedin.com/in/sethodell/https://twitter.com/sethodellAbout The Enrollify Podcast Network:The Higher Ed Pulse is a part of the Enrollify Podcast Network. Recorded live at NACAC in Los Angeles, this episode features Allison Lanier, Director of Client Engagement, discussing how AI is transforming brand building and content creation for institutions with lean resources. Allison shares insights on using AI tools like ChatGPT to support brand consistency, improve digital experiences, and optimize program pages. The conversation highlights AI's role in alleviating pressure on small teams and enhancing collaboration between marketing and admissions.Key TakeawaysAI Helps Lean Teams Scale Efforts: AI can streamline content creation, helping small teams focus on strategic tasks and reduce time spent on manual processes.AI Supports Brand Building: By inputting established brand voice and tone into AI tools, institutions can generate consistent, on-brand content for websites, program pages, and digital marketing efforts.Start with Playfulness: Don't fear AI—start experimenting with it as a research and ideation tool before fully integrating it into your workflow. How can AI enhance brand building for small institutions?Allison explains how AI tools like ChatGPT are a game changer for institutions with limited resources. Many schools struggle with branding and digital content creation because they don't have the capacity to invest in a full-time marketing team. By using AI, institutions can input their brand's voice, tone, and vocabulary to generate consistent content for program pages, websites, and other digital touchpoints. This not only helps maintain a strong brand presence but also enables teams to work faster and more effectively. What impact can AI have on higher education marketing? One of the most powerful use cases of AI is in content ideation, particularly for program pages, which Allison calls the “sales pages” of an institution. With AI, teams can generate outlines and keyword suggestions that fit their institution's voice, helping them create more compelling content faster. While AI should never fully replace human input, it's an invaluable tool for overcoming “blank page syndrome” and accelerating the research and drafting process. What advice does Allison offer for hesitant users? For those hesitant to embrace AI, Allison recommends starting small—use it as a research tool or experiment with simple, non-work-related tasks, like creating a shopping list. The key is to familiarize yourself with the technology in a playful and stress-free way, so you can become comfortable with its capabilities and start incorporating it into your workflow more effectively.Allison also highlights the importance of marketing and admissions teams working collaboratively, especially when using AI to streamline efforts. Building a strong partnership between these teams can ensure more cohesive messaging and better student engagement across digital platforms. In this bonus episode of Higher Ed Pulse live from NACAC, Mallory Willsea sits down with Adanna Smith, University Counselor at Wayne State University, to discuss pivotal legislative initiatives in Michigan aimed at increasing student access to education. They explore bills that address testing mandates, FAFSA requirements, and support for middle schoolers, all designed to break down barriers and enhance student opportunities in the state.Key TakeawaysHouse Bills 4810 and 4811: These bills aim to eliminate mandatory SAT scores on transcripts and the essay portion, aligning Michigan with test-optional trends.Universal FAFSA requirement: The push for a statewide FAFSA mandate could unlock opportunities for scholarships and financial aid, especially for first-generation students.Supporting middle school access: A new initiative targets career exploration and skills development for middle schoolers, helping to meet Michigan's 60 by 30 goal. What are Michigan's House Bills 4810 and 4811?Adanna shares that these bills focus on eliminating the requirement for the Michigan Merit Exam (SAT) score to be posted on high school transcripts. Many schools are now test-optional, and this mandate may inadvertently hinder students from gaining admission or receiving scholarships. By removing the SAT score requirement, students have more flexibility in their applications. Additionally, the bills would eliminate the essay portion of the SAT, which many institutions no longer require for admission, and the WorkKeys component, which has lost relevance in today's job market. How will a universal FAFSA bill impact Michigan students?Adanna highlights the importance of a universal FAFSA bill currently being considered in Michigan. This legislation would require all students to complete the FAFSA as part of their application process. The completion of FAFSA is a critical step for students, particularly first-generation and lower-income families, in accessing scholarships and financial aid. Adanna emphasizes that many students are unaware of the aid opportunities available to them, and this bill would help ensure that they don't miss out on critical funding. Furthermore, it aligns with Michigan's broader goal to increase the number of adults with a college degree or trade certificate by 2030.What is the importance of middle school initiatives in education access?Adanna discusses her involvement in the development of a new committee within MACAC aimed at supporting middle school counselors. The goal is to expose middle school students to various career paths and the skills necessary to succeed in those professions. This early intervention plays a key role in helping Michigan meet its ambitious goal of having 60% of working-age adults equipped with a college degree or trade certification by 2030. By reaching students earlier, the initiative aims to create equitable access to education and career opportunities. But until a student steps foot on the campus and has clarity about their college major, it is hard to know if it will be a great fit. Don't rule out liberal arts colleges until you have more information. There are opportunities available at smaller institutions that aren't available at larger schools.Visiting colleges and universities of various sizes, even if it isn't the schools your teen is considering, can help them understand more about the type of school they are looking for.  “There are a lot of really great opportunities at liberal arts colleges; we just have to take that next step to do a little bit more investigation and, hopefully, set foot on a campus or two before you completely rule them out.” – Anne IngersollAbout Anne Ingersoll: I am passionate about helping high school students and their families peacefully and successfully navigate the complex world of college admissions. “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” ~Carl RogersYou know, one of my favorite things about studying relational neuroscience is discovering the science that proves things we've known all along. Not everyone needs the science, and I know some think the science detracts from the powerful truths that people have been brave enough to say and believe without having science to back it up.  I think both approaches are fine.  I just happen to like the science.  And yup, the science backs it up.Acceptance really is needed if we want behavior to change.I find this truth to both a bummer and also quite liberating. How do we accept something without sending the message the it's ok, no big deal, and there's no need for it to change? It's hard, but possible.  You'll hear my own journey toward this truth and a couple tips on how to do it yourself in this episode.  Read a long summary of this episode here:  https://robyngobbel.com/howbehaviorchangesFollow Me On:FacebookInstagramOver on my website you can find:Webinar and eBook on Focus on the Nervous System to Change Behavior (FREE)eBook on The Brilliance of Attachment (FREE)LOTS & LOTS of FREE ResourcesOngoing support, connection, and co-regulation for struggling parents: The ClubYear-Long Immersive & Holistic Training Program for Parenting Professionals: Being With:::Reframing Resistance: Supporting Parents & Caregivers through the lens of Relational Neuroscience3-hour virtual workshop for professionalsJune 25, 10-1pm easternEveryone receives the recordinghttps://RobynGobbel.com/ReframingResistance I'll be keynoting the Families Rising (formerly NACAC!) What does my child need for their success to be inevitable? If I wanted to paint the top of a 20 foot wall, I'd rent some scaffolding.  Scaffolding makes the floor higher and would get me as close to the top of the wall as I needed.  The scaffolding would help make my success inevitable.  It's not the only thing I need to be successful (paint would come in handy!), but it's a really important piece.  In parenting, scaffolding is the support that we put in place that allows our children to be successful.  Then, slowly, thoughtful, and sequentially, we decrease the amount of external support needed as our children develop that capacity to be successful on their own.Read a summary of this episode and access the full show notes at: RobynGobbel.com/ScaffoldingFollow Me On:FacebookInstagramOver on my website you can find:Webinar and eBook on Focus on the Nervous System to Change Behavior (FREE)eBook on The Brilliance of Attachment (FREE)LOTS & LOTS of FREE ResourcesOngoing support, connection, and co-regulation for struggling parents: The ClubYear-Long Immersive & Holistic Training Program for Parenting Professionals: Being With:::Reframing Resistance: Supporting Parents & Caregivers through the lens of Relational Neuroscience3-hour virtual workshop for professionalsJune 25, 10-1pm easternEveryone receives the recordinghttps://RobynGobbel.com/ReframingResistance I'll be keynoting the Families Rising (formerly NACAC!) Self-regulation is a crucial developmental milestone and I'm thrilled that we are turning our eyes toward self-regulation instead of staying focused on behavior modification through rewards and consequences.  At the same time, we must remember that self-regulation is developed through repeated and regular experiences of co-regulation with an attuned, regulated, present caregiver.  If children are struggling to use their self-regulation skills, it's quite possible that they aren't regulated enough to access those skills.  They are getting dysregulated too quickly and need co-regulation before they can be expected to use skills on their own.  It is these experiences of coregulation that build the neural circuity for what is ultimately labeled self-regulation...so you don't need to worry that the continued offering of co-regulation will impede the development of self-regulation- it's exactly the opposite!!!Humans never outgrow their need for co-regulation!  We all need connection and co-regulation!  Which is exactly why I've created The Club- a virtual community for parents of kids impacted by trauma!CLICK HERE to read about The Club and join the waitlist for the next time we welcome new members!Follow Me On:FacebookInstagramOver on my website you can find:Webinar and eBook on Focus on the Nervous System to Change Behavior (FREE)eBook on The Brilliance of Attachment (FREE)LOTS & LOTS of FREE ResourcesOngoing support, connection, and co-regulation for struggling parents: The ClubYear-Long Immersive & Holistic Training Program for Parenting Professionals: Being WithDue to the already overwhelming interest in the 2025 cohort of Being With (yes, 2025!!!) we are going to open up the first round of applications only to folks on the waiting list. On today's episode, Ethan is joined by Christine Bowman, Assistant VP for Admission at Southwestern University. In part 6 in our series on What Colleges Want, Ethan and Christine get into: What is demonstrated interest and how do colleges track it?  How important is demonstrated interest to a student's chance of getting in? How might students find out if a particular school considers demonstrated interest in their admission review? What are some practical ways you can demonstrate your interest to colleges? Christine Bowman is the Assistant VP for Admission at Southwestern, where she oversees the admission department to set enrollment and retention philosophies. She has a Masters in Higher Ed Administration from UT-Austin, was the Co-Chair for the 2007 NACAC National Conference in and has served two terms as the Chair of the Colleges that Change Lives Board of Directors (see last season's episode with Ann Marano for more on CTCL's work). She currently serves on the advisory board of ROCA-NM (Rural Opportunities for College Access) and, with almost 30 years of experience in the admission profession, Christine believes in guiding students to find the right college fit and regularly gives presentations encouraging a stress-free college search process.
