Analyzed by Lacan: A Personal Account (Bloomsbury, 2023) brings together the first English translations of Why Lacan, Betty Milan's memoir of her analysis with Lacan in the 1970s, and her play, Goodbye Doctor, inspired by her experience. Why Lacan provides a unique and valuable perspective on how Lacan worked as psychoanalyst as well as his approach to psychoanalytic theory. Milan's testimony shows that Lacan's method of working was based on the idea that the traditional way of interpreting provoked resistance. Prior to Why Lacan, Milan wrote a play, Goodbye Doctor, based on her experience as Lacan's patient. The play is structured around the sessions of Seriema with the Doctor. Through the analysis, Seriema discovers why she cannot give birth, namely, an unconscious desire to satisfy the will of her father who didn't authorize her to conceive. She ceases to be the victim of her unconscious, grasps the possibility of choosing a father for her child and thus becoming a mother. Goodbye Doctor has been adapted into a film, Adieu Lacan, by the director Richard Ledes. Analyzed by Lacan features an Introduction by Milan to both works as well as a new interview with Mari Ruti about her writing and Lacan. This episode features Dr. Glen Broderick and Dr. May Beth Hall, speakers at the 2025 ADSA Ruminant Nutrition Symposium: Anomalies in Analyzed Nutrient Composition of Feedstuffs.Dr. Broderick's presentation was titled “Protein analysis methodology.” The high points of his talk include recommendations for nitrogen analysis in feeds, potential improvements in determining protein degradability and undegradability in the rumen, and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) analysis of amino acid composition of feedstuffs. (7:57)Dr. Hall's presentation was titled “Success and continuing challenges in analyzing nonfiber carbohydrates.” She gives some history of the analysis of non-fiber carbohydrates and talks about starch assays and how water-soluble carbohydrates are not solely composed of sugars. She also explains how microbes make decisions on which substrates to ferment and which to store for later. (12:47)The panelists talk about challenges in obtaining real-time nutrient analyses in order to make ration changes. They recommend using rolling averages rather than a single sample and using milk urea nitrogen as a way to evaluate if something is not quite right with a ration. (21:17)Dr. Broderick notes he recommends that scientists no longer use the Kjeldahl method of nitrogen analysis, that we look for new or alternative methodology other than in situ digestibility to determine protein degradability, and that NIR analysis of amino acids be used to make ration decisions when calibrated for the feedstuff under consideration. (27:10)Dr. Hall recommends using the appropriate carbohydrate standard when measuring water-soluble carbohydrates: sucrose for fresh forages, fructose for cool-season grasses with high fructan content, etc. She also notes that some feeds, like bakery waste or amylase-modified grain, contain soluble starch, which shows up in both the starch category and the water-soluble category in a feed analysis, essentially double-dipping. Lastly, she suggests that nonfiber carbohydrates remain a bit of a nutritional black box and we continue to learn more with improved technology. (29:36)Panelists share their take-home thoughts. For Pete's Sake 12.30.25 - Three of the Most Important Stories of the Week
This Christmas, I thought it would be fun to analyze six popular Christmas songs referencing animals-other-than-humans (mostly mammals who are forced to pull people around the snow in sleds, and then some birds, mainly fowl who are killed and eaten by humans but sometimes avians humans admire for their beauty). The songs are Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Run Run Rudolph, Sleigh Ride, Jingle Bells, The 12 Days of Christmas, and Nat King Cole's The Christmas Song. In this 24-minute podcast (originally recorded Christmas 2024), I deconstruct these Christmas songs from a Critical Animal Studies perspective. In other words, as an animal rights activist who is sympathetic to the more-than-human-world and the perspectives and interests of other animal individuals and our shared habitats, I analyze these classic songs and what lessons they teach us about fellow animal species and how we could be more respectful, kind of like those Politically Correct Bedtime Story series that gives you a critical yet humorous perspective on classic tales in Western society. My Radio Free Georgia version of this episode has the license to broadcast these popular songs, but for my podcast friends, I don't have copyright permission to play the songs, so I linked to the youtube versions of the songs in the podcast notes here below. For the recording, I'll put a jingle bell sound in there when you can cue up the songs to play yourself if you want to. But I'll speak the key lyrics dealing with animals that I discuss. LeBron James is redefining what longevity looks like in the NBA. In this episode, we break down his late-career production from ages 37 through 41 and compare it to legends like Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and John Stockton. Using advanced metrics like PER, True Shooting Percentage, and Game Score, we highlight why LeBron's age-40 season stands alone in NBA history—and what his sudden decline at 41 might really mean.We also discuss how rare it is for any player past 40 to deliver elite performances, why LeBron's efficiency still outpaced other all-time greats at the same age, and what fans should realistically expect moving forward. If you follow NBA analytics, sports history, or LeBron's incredible career, this breakdown is must-watch.
Send us a textWelcome to Safe Dividend Investing's Podcast # 251, on November 29th of 2025. My name is Ian Duncan MacDonald, and I am an author of six investment books. Today is a very quick podcast. I am trying to finish up my latest book before Christmas. It is called “Achieving Financial Independence From 180 High Dividend NYSE stocks - Analyzed and Scored”. Over the last 7 months It has taken up much more of my time than I had expected. However, the end is in sight, and I think it will be of great assistance to anyone trying to build a portfolio of financially strong, high dividend, income stocks.I did have time this week to watch a recent lecture by Warren Buffet on YouTube. It is not often you get insights into the pluses and minuses of bit coins, investment bubbles, and why value investing works, from an outstanding investor with 70 years of investment experience. I think anyone who listens to this video will come away as I did much wiser and better informed. The lecture has a terrible title to get your attention “Bitcoin is going to zero”. It was easily found on YouTube. I strongly recommend listening to it. Hopefully I will soon finish the job of launching my new 340-page book. My plan is to have a preliminary release of the book at a reduced price. If you wish to be informed of this preliminary release, please email me at imacd@informus.ca.This is Ian MacDonald hoping my 250 podcasts have motivated you to pursue financial independence as a self-directed investor. The conversation moves back to the USSR with Nikita Khrushchev's 1956 Secret Speech, which led to disruption in Eastern Europe. The Cuban Missile Crisis (1962) is analyzed as an act of traditional great power politics driven by the desire to prove Soviet superiority and overturn the strategic balance in intercontinental ballistic missiles. The 1979 invasion of Afghanistan is highlighted as a remarkable mistake that undermined détente and gave the United States an opportunity to pressure the USSR. Mikhail Gorbachev attempted to reform and reinvigorate Soviet communism based on a close reading of Marx and Lenin, but failed because he did not understand that the system was not popular and rested entirely on force.
US Productivity vs. Chinese Manufacturing Dominance Guest: Dave Hebert Dave Hebert analyzed China's manufacturing dominance, which is fundamentally based on massive state subsidies (over $1 trillion annually) and a huge workforce of up to 212 million people, despite this scale, the U.S. workforce is vastly more productive per capita, supported by foreign investment, skilled immigration, and innovation, while China suffers from factory overcapacity due to subsidized production regardless of market demand, and he argued that U.S. tariffs harm domestic productivity by increasing the cost of raw materials and components for American manufacturers. 1898

PREVIEW HEADLINE: International Silence on US Venezuela Intentions Analyzed; Opposition Tied to Concerns Over US Hegemony, Not Maduro's Defense GUEST NAME: Mary Anastasia O'Grady, Americas Columnist, Wall Street Journal Editorial Page 50-WORD SUMMARY: Mary Anastasia O'Grady analyzes the silence from capitals regarding the US intention to help elected leaders restore Venezuela. She notes that opposition to regimes like Maduro is weak because his track record is indefensible. However, louder objections are anticipated if there is a "strike on land" or if the US successfully restores its influence in the region, as this opposition is fundamentally about challenging US hegemony. 1876 Bolivar enters Caracas

Javier Milei's Dilemma: Midterms, the Wobbling Peso, and the Push for Dollarization Mary Anastasia O'Grady analyzed Argentinian President Javier Milei's economic and political dilemma as he faces midterms with a wobbling peso leading up to the October 26th elections. The peso is suffering due to fears that the opposition Peronist coalition will block Milei's reforms. O'Grady advocated for dollarization as the solution to stabilize the currency, reduce interest rates, and impose fiscal discipline on reckless spending. Powerful financial special interests prefer the status quo of an unanchored peso. ARGENTINA

Deepseek's AI Claims, Huawei's Chip Ambitions, and US/China Tech Competition Chris Riegel analyzed the escalating tech competition between the US and China, focusing on Chinese AI firm Deepseek and noting its claims of superiority were potentially misleading due to non-transparency and reliance on Nvidia technology. He discussed Huawei's chip fabrication efforts and ambitions, concluding that US sanctions, particularly restricting ASML tools, keep China one to one and a half generations behind. The US scale advantage, exemplified by investments like Colossus, remains significant in the AI competition.

If you own indexed universal life insurance or you're considering buying it, you've probably looked at all the index options and wondered which one to choose. In this episode, we dive deep into the data to answer that question with empirical analysis rather than guesswork. We examine the two most common index options available across IUL contracts: the traditional S&P 500 annual reset with a cap and the uncapped strategy with a spread. Using 20 years of market data, we test different allocation strategies to determine which approach delivers the best results. You'll discover why the "optimal" choice might matter less than you think, with total differences of only about 1% over two decades. More importantly, we reveal how splitting your allocation between capped and uncapped options can significantly reduce volatility while maintaining nearly identical returns to the best-performing single option. We also explore why volatility matters even in IUL contracts that have downside protection. If you're planning to take distributions from your policy in the future, understanding how to minimize years with minimal credits becomes crucial for maintaining consistent income. The analysis shows that a 50/50 or 55/45 split between capped and uncapped options produces a Sharpe ratio of 1.7, compared to 0.6-0.8 for direct S&P 500 investments. This demonstrates quantitatively why IUL serves as a non-correlated asset rather than direct market exposure. ___________________ Ready to optimize your IUL strategy or have questions about indexed universal life insurance? Was Kohberger Planning Another Attack? Christmas Day Search History Analyzed Christmas Day, 2022 — just weeks after the Idaho murders — Bryan Kohberger sat down and researched more than 20 notorious serial killers. One name stood out: Danny Rolling, the Gainesville Ripper, whose crimes eerily mirrored Kohberger's alleged actions. Rolling used a KA-BAR knife, targeted college students, and entered through sliding doors — chilling parallels to the Idaho case. In this episode, former FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke analyzes what this research spree means. Was Kohberger simply feeding a morbid curiosity, or was he conducting a tactical “after-action” review to identify mistakes and improve his methods? Did he believe he'd gotten away with it and could refine his approach for a “next time”? And how do Rolling's own post-crime behaviors — hiding weapons, evading capture — fit into Kohberger's apparent fixation? We also examine the broader context: Kohberger had been stopped twice on the way to Pennsylvania, was wearing gloves and bagging his trash, and knew police were looking for his car. Was this research paranoia-fueled damage control, or a compulsive dive into the crimes of people he hoped to emulate? #BryanKohberger #DannyRolling #Idaho4 #TrueCrime #HiddenKillers #RobinDreeke #SerialKillerResearch #IdahoMurders #BehavioralAnalysis #CriminalMindset Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
