There are many financial resources for families that they may not know about. And Emily, I'm very interested in you touched on it earlier, but I would say probably 80% of people that have aging parents have no idea about what's called Aid and Attendance benefits or VA benefits. Their loved one may qualify for a benefit from the military based on certain criteria. Emily Schwarz, VP of Sales for ElderLife Financial, is also the President of AidInAttendance.com. Emily joins Suzanne to tell us a little bit about Aid and Attendance benefits and how to qualify for them, courtesy of MorningStar Senior Living. Emily talks about the four criteria to qualify, and for spouses to qualify, and also provides ways to find out when your senior loved one served in the military if you aren't sure of the dates. "There are actually more spouses on this benefit than veterans, because more spouses are living into their 90s. A spouse is eligible based on her wartime husband's service. She always applies on the most recent husband, so if she was married to a wartime veteran who passes, and she remarries a non wartime veteran, then she is likely no longer eligible. You're not going to be eligible if divorced from a veteran — you need to be married to that wartime veteran at the time of death. Maybe you've never gotten a benefit from the VA before, but your husband's service left you this wonderful benefit." Listen to hear all about qualifying. Dannelle speaks with Olia Davis, a Certified Senior Advisor. In this episode, Olia shares what we need to know about the difficult decision-making process of finding the right senior care facility for your loved one and the resources available to help make these decisions. Olia and Dannelle also talk about how to empower our seniors to take part in seeking out the right care community for them. “When she moved her to a residential care home, now when she comes, she is spending time with her grandmother. She doesn't have to worry about all those other things... it's a completely different interaction. It's no longer task oriented. It's more emotional because all that stress and all those other things you have to worry about are gone.” - Olia Davis Timestamps02:26 - Olia's three core values and how they connect to working with older adults and caregiving 04:06 - Signs that a senior may need more help with care and possibly a community care living situation 07:05 - Having conversations with loved ones about moving to a senior living facility 10:19 - Finding the right community for your loved one 17:41 - Support for caregivers of seniors 20:36 - Options for affording care for seniors 24:21 - The benefits of long-term care facilities 26:48- What Olia is passionate about outside of her work with older adults and families Takeaway Learnings1) A hard decision, like moving a loved one to a care facility, begins with a conversation involving everyone concerned. Moving is known to be one of the most stressful life transitions. So, even when we make care decisions for someone who isn't independently capable, including them in the process whenever, and to the extent, possible helps make better choices and lessens the stress of transition. 2) Take time to understand the different options to make a more informed decision with your loved one, when possible, about what kind of community makes sense based on current and future level of care needs, cost, location, staff, and community policies, and other factors that may be important to your loved one's quality of life. 3) Consulting a senior care advisor can help narrow the field of best options that work for your situation with less stress. Actionable Tips1) We can't always check in in person, so it's important to be aware of potential signs that a loved one needs more help if they live alone or have infrequent visitors. Some of those warning signs may include: weight loss, a change in hygiene habits, memory loss, unpaid bills, or unopened mail, and increased isolation. 2) The considerable cost of care is a key variable for most of us when choosing a senior community. It's important to fully review, as best we can, what financial resources and benefits may be available to help cover the cost of both in-home and community care, such as Veterans Aid and Attendance, long term care insurance, personal savings, or other resources. A good place to learn about financial options for long term care is paying for SeniorCare.com. [00:46:00] 3) Navigating eligibility and applying for potential care benefits can be complicated. So, it's wise to seek guidance from a professional, like a financial advisor specializing in long-term care, a VA pensions manager, a benefits counselor at your local Area on Aging, or other long-term care professional. In the fourth installment of his podcast, Elder Law Today, Yale Hauptman, a practicing New Jersey elder law attorney, discusses how long term care planning actually decreases the likelihood of ever needing nursing home care. Learn how the long term care system actually works to push people towards nursing homes when they have no more money. Medicaid home based benefits often pay only a part of the cost of aides needed on a 24 hour 7 day a week basis, but will pay the entire cost of care if provided in a nursing home setting. It is, therefore, important to plan ahead to have the funds available to be able to stay at home. Yale also reviews for listeners an unknown Veterans Administration benefit for eligible Veterans that can provide as much as $1800 per month in additional income to cover the cost of home aides and assisted living care. The Veterans Aid and Attendance program can help qualified seniors preserve their much needed assets. But Yale cautions that one must keep an eye on the next level of care so as not to jeopardize eligibility for other benefit programs down the road. This requires the coordination of a long term care plan to meet all levels of care, not just the current one. In the second segment Yale interviews Angie Hicks of Angie’s List, a website offering reviews by consumers of local home improvement contractors. Yale and Angie talk about how Angie’s List is seeing more inquiries in recent years by children who need help finding services for their parents who live long distances away. Seeing the aging of America, Angie tells Yale that Angie’s List now offers ratings of various elder care services to assist families who are faced with the task of caring for the elderly members of the family unit from a distance.
