The Scuttlebutt: Understanding Military Culture
The Untold Story of US Marines at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan, 2012

We welcome journalist Jeanne McKinney to shine a light on a little-known episode of the war in Afghanistan that illuminates the larger political, social, and military landscape of our longest war. Jeanne's book, Triumph Over the Taliban: The Untold Story of US Marines' Courageous Fight to Save Camp Bastion, tells the story of September 12, 2012, in Helmand Province, Afghanistan when an attack on Camp Bastion, a critical forward operating base, showcased the resilience, bravery, and strategic acumen of the US Marines. Camp Bastion was a massive military base established by the British and later expanded to include US Marines and Afghan forces. Spanning 40 square miles with a 25-mile fence line, the base was situated in one of the most volatile regions of Afghanistan. The base's sheer size and strategic importance made it a prime target for the Taliban, who were deeply entrenched in the surrounding poppy fields, a key source of their funding. The Taliban meticulously planned their assault on Camp Bastion for over a year. Originally scheduled for July 2012, the attack was postponed due to an accidental explosion during training. The final assault was executed on a particularly dark night, leveraging the element of surprise. Fifteen Taliban fighters infiltrated the base, aiming to destroy aircraft and kill as many Marines as possible. What made this attack unique was the Taliban's approach. Unlike their usual tactics of using suicide bombers and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), this was a ground assault. The fighters carried rifles and RPGs, prepared for direct combat—a rare and bold move for the Taliban. The Marines stationed at Camp Bastion demonstrated exceptional valor and quick thinking. Upon hearing the initial explosions, they initially assumed it was a controlled detonation. However, they quickly realized the gravity of the situation and sprang into action. Despite the chaos and darkness, the Marines mobilized, formed defensive positions, and protected civilians on the base. One of the most remarkable aspects of their response was the transition of Aviation Marines into infantry roles. Trained to handle crises, they put down their wrenches and picked up rifles, showcasing the versatility and preparedness ingrained in Marine training. Their swift and coordinated actions prevented what could have been a catastrophic loss of life and equipment. The attack on Camp Bastion occurred three days after the Benghazi attack, which dominated the news cycle. As a result, this significant event did not receive the attention it deserved. Media reports often focused on the blame game, targeting two Marine generals for security lapses. This narrative overshadowed the heroism displayed by the Marines on the ground. At the time, there was a push to downsize the military presence in Afghanistan, leading to reduced security measures at bases like Camp Bastion. The generals on the ground, aware of the vulnerabilities, requested additional resources and security enhancements, but these were denied due to political considerations. This incident underscores the broader issue of how military decisions are often influenced by political agendas, sometimes at the expense of on-ground safety and effectiveness. The attack on Camp Bastion serves as a stark reminder of the need for robust security measures and the importance of listening to military leaders who understand the complexities of the battlefield. The attack on Camp Bastion is a powerful example of military courage and the complexities of modern warfare. It highlights the importance of readiness, the impact of political decisions on military operations, and the need to honor and recognize the sacrifices of those who serve. As we reflect on this event, it serves as a reminder of the bravery of the US Marines and the enduring spirit of those who stand on the front lines to protect our freedoms. This shared episode of Big Blend Radio's WAY BACK WHEN History Podcast features award-winning military journalist, author, and documentary filmmaker Jeanne McKinney, who discusses her new book, "Triumph Over the Taliban: The Untold Story of US Marines' Courageous Fight to Save Camp Bastion." Award-winning military history author and historian Mike Guardia joins in on the discussion. Three days after the September 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, another attack occurred on a massive forward operating base called Camp Bastion in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, home to U.S. and U.K. expeditionary forces.  With keen investigative prowess, McKinney reveals the true story of what happened at Camp Bastion on that fateful night. After 10 years of research about this battle, McKinney paints a vivid picture of this gripping saga, sharing intimate life and death moments of fighting the Taliban on the Marines' home turf — showcasing how Marines saved civilian contractors, each other, and over $5 billion in aircraft and equipment. The British Army can trace its origins back to the Acts of Union of 1707 and its rich history involves conflicts both large and small in all corners of the globe. But as the twenty-first century dawned, the organisation found itself in a transitional phase and with something of an identity crisis. What exactly was its culture? What, with its resources, could it really be expected to achieve? What was its relevance to modern Britain? Today's guest, Simon Akam, sought to confront questions like these in his book Changing the Guard: The British Army Since 9/11. Grounded in his own first-hand experience and supported by hundreds of interviews, in this episode Akam explains the conclusions that he reached and the incredible resistance he experienced as he sought to bring his book to publication. On today's Zero Limit Podcast we chat to Dave Coleman former Royal Marin Commando of almost 8 years. Had a stutter/stammer his entire life, did a lot of speech therapy which didn't work, could barely say his name  at one point or say ‘yes miss' in the register at school without it taking about 6 years. Dave was subsequently given the nickname ‘Mumbles' in the Marines which he is still known by to this day. The confidence he gained in the Marines has helped him get over it more or less. Dave joined the Marines aged 16 and passed basic training as an original member of the troop. 60+ people started on day 1 week 1 and around 12 of them finished. The Marines do the longest/hardest military training in the world lasting 32 weeks and finishing with the 4 Commando tests in 4 days, the last one being a 30 miler in full kit within 8 hours. Dave deployed to Nad-E-Ali in the Afghanistan Green Zone on Op Herrick 14 with 45 Commando. After being there only a week and on his first company op, a grenade landed a couple of feet away from him and was fragged in the blast.  The medic said the only reason he  wasn't dead was because it rolled off the hard track and into soft mud at the last second. Dave had 4 surgeries at Camp Bastion to remove grenade fragmentation and suffered 28 stitches to his throat, arms, legs, and ass. One month later he returned to the front line a to re-join the boys. Let's GO!

"You join the military because you want to serve your country and you become an aviator particularly in the Marine Corps, to support the Marines on the ground. That's what our entire structure of the Marine Corps is about." Cook was the only female pilot on the aircraft. She tells the story of one mission in particular where they came to the support of a group of Marines being fired upon. She could hear on the radio the explosions. They shot two Hellfire missiles to take out the enemy. Six months later, in a chance encounter in Europe, she met one of the Marines she helped save. "He said, 'you guys saved our life,'" Cook said. "I have a face with the name and so it's super rewarding." Cook described what that mission was like. "We're taught to compartmentalize. At that moment, I was like, 'I can't fail. These people need the support,'" Cook said. "But in the back of your head, you're like, 'I'm about to shoot a missile at people; at a live person who's probably not going to be alive after I do this.' That's kind of a heavy burden. They were shooting at Americans, so it was completely justified but it's still a heavy burden that a lot of people don't ever have to deal with." She also talks in this episode about applying and then being selected to join the Blue Angels on its Fat Albert aircraft, as well as her interactions with women of all ages and especially young girls that look up to her as an inspiring role model.

Over 20 years ago I spend 2 years carrying out an ethnographic study of a psychiatric hospital in London. This was for my PhD in Social Anthropology. To gain ethical approval for my research, I became a member of staff and worked as a nursing assistant. By working the shifts I was able to get a feel of the daily rhythm of the hospital and how the often laten aspects of everyday culture shaped behaviour and perceptions around team work, care, policy and power. I was also able to experience and understand some of the key elements that made nursing and medical teams form in different environments; from when the wards were calm to when teams had to work as units when there were challenging periods on the wards.   Understanding how teams can work in challenging environments can help us learn more about the culture of teams in general; what are the driving forces that make a team connect and become high performing and what elements of team work challenge unity?   To help me unpack this further I spoke to Professor Mark de Rond, who is Professor of Organisational Ethnography at Cambridge Judge Business School, Cambridge University. Mark shares with me his experience of carrying out ethnographic research in Camp Bastion, which was a British Army base in Afghanistan. Mark's area of focus was on the military medical team. He shares fascinating insights around how teams manage periods that demand focus, compared to periods which are less busy. He also describes the subtle cultural elements of teams that shape their identity.   We also discuss the growing influence of ethnography in business schools.    This episode is the first of two with Mark. Episode 6 will focus on work place conflict; what causes it, how can we understand it and how can we manage it, especially when many of us are either working from home and/or having to work through the pandemic. Mark and I are both trained in work place mediation, so this, with our ethnographic and culture hats on provides some interesting listening. In the second episode you will also hear where Mark will take is anthropologist's notebook. People often say, in an off-the-cuff way, that something they organised was ‘like a military operation’.  Well, this week’s guest, Harry Lomas, really does know what it’s like to run a kitchen as a huge, well-oiled military machine.   Harry’s strategic skills have been honed by the 34 years he spent with the British Army.  His amazing career included a stint with The Royal Household; the position of Master Chef with the Parachute Regiment in Cyprus and, to round off, being responsible for feeding troops around the world, including Afghanistan. There he was involved in rebuilding the kitchen at Camp Bastion, which had to serve 25,000 troops at each sitting.   The statistics become more eye-watering with Harry’s next role, overseeing the catering for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games. As you’ll hear, the prospect of serving 147,000 people a day, never seemed to daunt Harry.  That’s probably why he’s the perfect fit for the title he holds now: Head of Culinary at Wembley Stadium.   At which point, I’ll hand over to the great strategist himself.  Only Harry can explain the complexities of cooking different meals for thousands of football fans  – and making sure they’re back in their seats before kick-off.

They call them 'The Unexpected Survivors'. The casualties from the war in Afghanistan whose injuries were so severe that they were not expected to survive, but who survived nevertheless. In October, after 13 years Britain and the United States officially brought their combat operations in Helmand Afghanistan to an end. Camp Bastion, the coalition stronghold – once one of the largest military bases in the world – has been dismantled leaving a handful of buildings that will now be handed over to the Afghan National Army. First established eight years ago in 2006, Camp Bastion came to host to one of the most extraordinary and successful trauma medical systems ever seen. Amongst the medics that went to and served in Afghanistan were doctors who trained with me in civilian hospitals. With the mission nearly at an end I had to see them and their system for myself, to try and understand just how it came to be and why it worked so well. Photo courtesy of Ministry of Defence

Cambridge Judge Business School Discussions on Organisational Behaviour

One of the greatest risks to team stability, explains Dr Mark de Rond, recently returned from fieldwork with the high-performance surgical teams at Britain's Camp Bastion military hospital in Afghanistan, is boredom. Under pressure, teams of high performers function exceptionally well. But when bored, the qualities that produce exceptional performance under pressure risk destabilising the team. How do you deal with a sense of futility and boredom?
