A struggle more and more of us are dealing with as we get older is caring for our elderly parents. Whether it's with part-time or full-time care, many women our age face the added responsibility of physically (and sometimes financially) aiding our parents as their physical and/or mental health declines. As an online coach and mentor to (more) women put in this situation, I realize the toll it takes on you. So I've become more informed about that impact, and as a result, I've customized our MRS coaching (even) to help clients navigate this emotional space. In today's episode, I share some of the challenges of caring for aging (and ill) parents, and I explain the negative impact it can have on your physical and mental health, as well as its affect on your weight loss journey. I also share some of the strategies I use in coaching women facing these struggles, and I give you practical tips that you can use if you are dealing with this challenge. My hope is that I can help you better navigate this time in life, so you feel more equipped to handle the varied emotions that come with caregiving and so you also continue to care for yourself during this difficult stage. On today's show, we discuss a topic that many of us will deal with from multiple angles: caring for elderly family members. Many baby boomers who are transitioning into retirement have also become caregivers for their parents or older relatives. At the same time, these retirees may be beginning to talk to their children or grandchildren about some estate planning basics and how they want to be cared for if they start to experience a decline later in life. These are some of the most challenging decisions to make and some of the hardest conversations to have. But making a plan while you and the people you're caring for are still healthy and opening up about your wishes with loved ones can make the tough times we all experience in life a little bit easier down the road. Here's a quick overview of the checklist-driven process we use at Keen Wealth to help folks at every stage of these transitions care for elderly family members.

The day after Labor Day, 2022, Jodie Lapchick rented a car and drove from Maine to Hilton Head, South Carolina to "rescue" her elderly parents. Over recent years, their mental and physical health had declined, and although Jodie and her two siblings did not live nearby, they tried to help manage things as best they could. Jodie says her dad had a plan for everything but not what to do when he and her mother could no longer care for themselves or each other. They relied on a team of home care providers for much of their day-to-day needs, which worked fine for a while. Things came to a head when it became clear they needed a higher level of care and the three siblings scrambled to figure out the best next step. That's when Jodie decided to bring her parents to Maine. Once they arrived, though, their problems didn't go away. In fact, it's been one challenge after another and as is too often the case for caregivers, it began to put Jodie's own health at risk. This is Jodie's story.

Kurtis in Texas has 5 kids and has brought his widowed elderly dad into the household to live with them. In the difficult transition, he's discovered new patterns of life with his dad, including daily morning prayer and Bible study, that have blossomed into unexpected moments of grace and a more peaceful relationship. We wonder aloud how ancient/medieval type multigenerational living arrangements in the same household, which used to be the norm for thousands of years, might still be appropriate today.

Wondering when it's time to get your loved one OT or PT? There are some major signs that you want to be looking out for as you care for your loved one. You might even want to take notes or journal a few changes that you notice because this can help the physician to get a better idea of what is happening and when it started. Here are a few things to watch for: falling: either frequency increasing or the very first time. You don't need to request therapy right away but you should let the physician know so that it can be in the record and over time, they can track back the start of signs and symptoms of something more sinister. Shortness of breath : during familiar activities or with new attempts of activity. New levels of shortness of breath or increased fatigue with sudden onsetgeneral decline in mobility or engagement in activity due to weakness, increasing pain patternsincreasing dependency on you or others for assistance with routine tasksYou need a referral from the physician for physical therapy or occupational therapy. Home based vs outpatient therapy will need to be considered. Following an assessment, a plan will be developed and this can help you as a caregiver with your role too. Don't be shy in asking for suggestions on your challenges in providing care. The difference between OT and PT? This is a common question. In a really generalized nut shell, this is how I explain it to patients when they ask me. PT is focused on restoring and improving muscle activity for walking and other functional movements. They focus on balance and ambulation quality and safety as well as pain management through the development of strengthening and/or stretching exercises. OT uses a holistic approach to focus on maximizing one's independence in daily life routine with consideration of whatever challenge their body is presenting with the use of modifications, exercises and environmental changes. Again, this is very basic. However, the need for both OT and PT is often needed and we work well together to make the patient as successful as possible in the shortest amount of time. Tips for dog owners whose dogs are entering elderly status in order to keep them alert, active and healthy.
This week, I’m talking about navigating life’s important transitions before and during retirement. Today, I’m talking about navigating caring for your elderly parents. This is an important transition that usually happens in your early to mid 60s. But it can happen much earlier or later depending on the age and health of your parents or your spouse’s parents. Caretaking of elderly parents often falls on family members, with 65% of older Americans who need care today are relying on family and friends exclusively. And of those caregivers, ⅔ of them are female. So for you women listening, it’s likely that at some point, if you aren’t already, you will be providing some type of care for mom or dad...or both. The implications of this are numerous and differ in each situation. The challenge for many women is that you just raised your kids and soon after may be thrust back into a caregiving role, so it’s important to understand and accept the possibility that that may happen so you can better cope with it. Other challenges of caretaking for elderly parents include time & energy commitments. You might need to also provide financial support if your parents don’t have the financial means to independently care for themselves or pay their bills. Another challenge is reduced income for you or your spouse. Because of the time commitments, you may decide to work part-time or stop working altogether to take care of mom or dad. This can be particularly challenging for your finances and retirement plan if you didn’t plan on this change. Not only do you reduce your income, but you also may not be able to contribute to your retirement during this time. Of course it’s different for everyone and every circumstance, but depending on the age, health, and financial resources of your parents, you’ll want to think through this important life transition that can blindside many people during their peak working and earning years, and either accelerate or delay your own retirement. That’s it for today. Thanks for listening. We are discussing Hanukkah and the Jewish tradition that this holiday brings to the “season's greetings”. We are joined by Carolyn Greenberg, the Salt Lake City Jewish Community Center special events coordinator, to talk about this historical and significant holiday. Caring for Elderly Relatives (0:16:08) Who's going over the river and through the woods to their grandmother's house for the holidays? While this is fun and exciting, it can sometimes be incredibly stressful on our elderly loved ones. How can we make the holidays as enjoyable for them as they are for us? These support groups can be really insightful and helpful. We are joined by two lactation consultants Anne Tullis and Sherri Gunn, who are founders of their own business “Success with Breastfeeding”. So what can you do to navigate that complicated time of balancing work and a new baby? Here to share some tips with us about making the most out of parental leave is Daisy Dowling, founder and CEO of Workparent, a training and consulting firm that supports working parents and the organizations that employ them. Just like so many other parts of our lives, setting boundaries during the holidays may be just the thing to let us enjoy this time. Ganel-Lyn Condie has some suggestions on how we can do this. Ganel-Lyn is a friend of the show and motivational speaker and we're happy to have her on the show to discuss this important topic. Are you in need of some holiday baking inspiration? James Schend is with us to give some great ideas for some shareable holiday baked goods! James is the deputy editor for Taste of Home.

In this episode of Inter Vitam et Mortem, Catholic bioethicist Mary Anne Urlakis interviews a woman concerning Care for Elderly Parents. The woman has a Master's Degree in Business and is currently pursuing a second Master's Degree in Theology. In 2007, the woman's mother suffered a debilitating stroke. From then on, the woman - with the help of her siblings and other caregivers- has continued to provide loving daily care for her mother. She has lived the Corporal Acts of Mercy, and provided a profound witness to the meaning of sacrificial love. According to a 2016 report [https://www.bls.gov/news.release/elcare.nr0.htm] 41.3 Million adults in the U.S. provide unpaid care for an elder. Other studies demonstrate that approximately 29% of the US population is providing at least some substantial care for a chronically ill, disabled, or aged family member. A recent study of 80,000 participants published by the Boston College Center for Retirement Research demonstrated that 17% of adult children provide substantial care for a parent. In this interview, the woman and Mary Anne discuss caring for an aged parent and focus on the bioethical and theological relevance of seeing the Image of God reflected in the parent for whom we are caring. (June 3, 2019)
Ungentle Goodnights uses the records of the United States Naval Asylum (later the United States Naval Home), a residence for disabled and elderly sailors and Marines established by the U.S. government, to recover the lives of the 541 men who were admitted there as lifetime residents between 1831 and 1866. Ungentle Goodnights seeks to discover the life experiences of real Marines and naval sailors, not a few of whom were misbehaving, crafty, and engaging individuals who feature prominently in the book. Christopher McKee discusses the rough lives of these men with host Jim Fausone. The research reveals charming stories and reflects the times when life was rough and expectations were limited.
The average lifespan of an American male is about 79 years while an American woman has a lifespan of about 81 years. And that’s average. Many people will live until they’re 90 years of age or more. While some of the elderly will be in good health during those years; some will not. Regardless, there likely will come a time when their adult children, if they are alive, will confront the issue of taking care of their parents. That can be a difficult assignment, so it is a good idea for adult children and their parents to talk about such things as power of attorney and funeral wishes as early as possible. A lot is written about seeing our parents through dementia, but not much is available to discuss what it takes to deal with parents who might need our assistance, but who still have all their faculties. How do we finesse a parent who wants to maintain their independence into moving nearer to us; into giving us Power of Attorney to take care of their healthcare and financial needs; to accept daily help? How do we do this while allowing them to maintain their dignity? With honesty and insight borne of experience, through Elderly Parents With All Their Marbles: A Survival Guide for the Kids, author Pam Carey shares her personal journey as well as the (humorously serious) "Rules of the Road" she developed while caring for her parents. Anyone who has ever had to care for elderly parents will see their own situations reflected in this witty yet practical guide to surviving the ordeal. You will feel like you're right by Pam's side as she outlines 49 essential points for navigating the trials of elderly living, the medical issues and the inevitable loss that eventually comes. She illustrates each point with her own sometimes hilarious and often poignant experiences. This book is a must-read as a resource for anyone dealing with assisting an aging loved one. Please consider purchasing a copy as a gift for a friend, care facility or YOUR children. Pam wrote the book as a resource for others facing similar journeys. She is also the author of Minor League Mom, A Mother's Journey Through the Red Sox Farm Teams (2009). The mother of Red Sox farm team veterans Tim and Todd Carey, Pamela holds a B.A. from Colby College and an M.A. from Columbia University Teachers College. www.parentswithmarbles.com
