Send us a textSam Wright is a Senior Community Midwife and WRN Derbyshire & Staffordshire member. She is a powerful advocate for women as they go through their pregnancy and birthing journey.Sam begins with the history of midwives and takes us through the ages. She explains the meaning of the word "midwife" as being "with women" throughout their pregnancy. How midwives have been historically persecuted as witches, and in more modern times are marginalised and erased with the increasing medicalisation of pregnancy. She discusses how because of this women are losing trust in the medical profession and midwives. How the gender neutral language and the erasure of female specific words like "woman", "mother", "breastfeeding", have all impacted on women, including women whose first language is not English, who have no understanding of terms such as "birthing person". She goes on to discuss how midwives are impacted by the rise in commercial surrogacy in the UK and beyond, and what is really going on in the murky world of commissioning parents and baby manufacturing using women as the factory unit.If you enjoyed listening to this podcast and would like to hear more, go to womensrights.network/wrn-podcast to listen, download and subscribe to more of our episodes. In this episode of Design Vault, Doug speaks with Eric Pros, Director of Design for DS Architecture in Cleveland, Ohio.Visit glengery.com/design-vault to see photos and additional information as you listen along. The new City of Westlake Senior Community Center was designed for senior citizens. The building is quite large at 28,000 square feet, and the building typology is more and more familiar across the United States. With that said, the design team used design restrictions as an opportunity. The city of Westlake, Ohio, adopted a distinctive Western reserve traditional style of architecture. All public buildings throughout Westlake are comprised of a traditional sandstone water table, a blended red brick veneer and a pitched roof with reverse gables over their entries. At the outset, it was strongly suggested by the city that all buildings in Westlake incorporate the same old Detroit red brown blend of brick in a standard modular size. With these stipulations in mind, the finished building reimagines the standard running bond pattern of brick through the lens of an ancient Roman ruin. The team created a unique quarter coffer brick detail to make both the construction process repeatable and the facades uniquely textured. The resulting esthetic is innovative and quite elegant.

In this episode, our long-term guest, Barbara, has been traveling around the United States in her RV since September. She is currently in an RV resort in Mesa, Arizona, and has been participating in activities such as painting and watercolor classes, Pickleball, golf, and lapidary. However, she has also encountered challenges, such as expensive diesel prices, limited space, finding mail and prescriptions, and navigating health care options. She has also learned about Canadian RVers' struggles due to the restrictions on how long they can stay and the expensive insurance they need. Barbara shares her experience of alternating between hosting her extended family at her house for Thanksgiving and Christmas and taking a trip this year instead. She was given permission to do this by her daughter and daughter-in-law. However, due to the travel nightmares that were happening, she decided not to fly anywhere during the holidays. Instead, they spent Christmas with her 87-year-old father, who lives nearby. Kathe and Barbara also discussed the possibility of downsizing and living in a motorhome full-time. Kathe brought up house-sitting as an inexpensive way to travel, and you can find out more (and get a discount on the program) by going to https://RockYourRetirement.com/THS Finally, they briefly discussed a book called The Blue Zones that looked at seven different communities around the world with a high percentage of people over 100 years old, all of which had strong communities. Dannelle speaks with Olia Davis, a Certified Senior Advisor. In this episode, Olia shares what we need to know about the difficult decision-making process of finding the right senior care facility for your loved one and the resources available to help make these decisions. Olia and Dannelle also talk about how to empower our seniors to take part in seeking out the right care community for them. “When she moved her to a residential care home, now when she comes, she is spending time with her grandmother. She doesn't have to worry about all those other things... it's a completely different interaction. It's no longer task oriented. It's more emotional because all that stress and all those other things you have to worry about are gone.” - Olia Davis Timestamps02:26 - Olia's three core values and how they connect to working with older adults and caregiving 04:06 - Signs that a senior may need more help with care and possibly a community care living situation 07:05 - Having conversations with loved ones about moving to a senior living facility 10:19 - Finding the right community for your loved one 17:41 - Support for caregivers of seniors 20:36 - Options for affording care for seniors 24:21 - The benefits of long-term care facilities 26:48- What Olia is passionate about outside of her work with older adults and families Takeaway Learnings1) A hard decision, like moving a loved one to a care facility, begins with a conversation involving everyone concerned. Moving is known to be one of the most stressful life transitions. So, even when we make care decisions for someone who isn't independently capable, including them in the process whenever, and to the extent, possible helps make better choices and lessens the stress of transition. 2) Take time to understand the different options to make a more informed decision with your loved one, when possible, about what kind of community makes sense based on current and future level of care needs, cost, location, staff, and community policies, and other factors that may be important to your loved one's quality of life. 3) Consulting a senior care advisor can help narrow the field of best options that work for your situation with less stress. Actionable Tips1) We can't always check in in person, so it's important to be aware of potential signs that a loved one needs more help if they live alone or have infrequent visitors. Some of those warning signs may include: weight loss, a change in hygiene habits, memory loss, unpaid bills, or unopened mail, and increased isolation. 2) The considerable cost of care is a key variable for most of us when choosing a senior community. It's important to fully review, as best we can, what financial resources and benefits may be available to help cover the cost of both in-home and community care, such as Veterans Aid and Attendance, long term care insurance, personal savings, or other resources. A good place to learn about financial options for long term care is paying for SeniorCare.com. [00:46:00] 3) Navigating eligibility and applying for potential care benefits can be complicated. So, it's wise to seek guidance from a professional, like a financial advisor specializing in long-term care, a VA pensions manager, a benefits counselor at your local Area on Aging, or other long-term care professional. About Olia DavisOlia Davis is a Certified Senior Advisor with Oasis Senior Advisors based in McKinney, TX. Prior to working in senior advising, she had a career in telecommunications. The difference between regular people and above average people is a combination of a few things: grit, determination, consistency, tenacity, and the foolish belief that everything is possible. But one thing validates entrepreneurs is when they combine those elements with hard work and genius. Today, you'll get a chance to meet one fo these people. Ryan Horn is Founder of Extraordinary Man, a program that teaches men how to build their businesses and become the people they were intended to be. He's host of the Extraordinary Man Podcast and operates Masterminds to help men become better in all areas of their lives. Today's episode is powerful on a few different levels. Ryan dives in and talks about how he comes from an entrepreneurial family and a time when he was younger and decided to put together calendars for himself and started selling. He went to college for Exercise Science and closer to his senior year, learned it was tough to get a job as a strength and conditioning coach. He decided that starting a business would be a better option and moved from his hometown of 300 people to the bustling metropolis in the Twin Cities and started a personal training business. Ryan candidly shares how he hit a rough patch in his life when his business wasn't developing as he preferred. This landed him living on his Aunt's couch in a Senior Community where he had to sneak in and out to work at a temporary job at a manufacturing company. Pedro and Ryan discuss how you know you're living below your potential and one book that broke open the doors to running full steam ahead into being a high-performing entrepreneur, mentor and coach to thousands of men. What You'll Learn: How long it took Ryan to get off his Aunt's couch after his breakthrough Why choosing college is not always the best option if it leads to drowning in student debt What “The Education of Millionaires” is and how it impacted Ryan's life One course that helped Ryan break away from his factory job where he worked 9p-9a for $9.00 an hour The importance of Bedros Keuilian in Ryan's life How many conferences Ryan attended before he reached master level and the work he had to implement to get there The power of planning and the length of time you should set goals for in life and business How to get plugged into Ryan's Extraordinary Man group on Facebook Why core values are so important in your personal life and business A powerful exercise Ryan uses to help men break through The difference between passive and active coaching and how to choose the right one to get results A great quote that sums up coaching from Tom Landry How to make a million dollars a year And much more! Favorite Quote: “Your education doesn't determine whether or not you're going to be a successful entrepreneur.” Ryan Horn Connect With Ryan: Coach Ryan Horn Podcast How To Get Involved: From rock bottom and $500 to his name, Pedro Meneses moved to the US, left everything behind seeking answers to turning his life around, becoming an entrepreneur, and thriving in business. Every entrepreneur has a similar story and it usually involves sleeping on a friend's couch, eating Ramen Noodles, working shitty jobs, for shitty people, making shitty money with limited options. Most people who know them today did not see the 20 + years of hard work they put in trying to build something from nothing. Steve, Jason, and Ryan discuss how you know you're living below your potential and one book that broke open the doors to running full steam ahead into being a high-performing entrepreneur, mentor and coach to thousands of men. What You'll Learn: How long it took Ryan to get off his Aunt's couch after his breakthrough Why choosing college is not always the best option if it leads to drowning in student debt What “The Education of Millionaires” is and how it impacted Ryan's life One course that helped Ryan break away from his factory job where he worked 9p-9a for $9.00 an hour The importance of Bedros Keuilian in Ryan's life How many conferences Ryan attended before he reached master level and the work he had to implement to get there The power of planning and the length of time you should set goals for in life and business How to get plugged into Ryan's Extraordinary Man group on Facebook Why core values are so important in your personal life and business A powerful exercise Ryan uses to help men break through The difference between passive and active coaching and how to choose the right one to get results A great quote that sums up coaching from Tom Landry How to make a million dollars a year How to get one free hour of coaching with Ryan. And much more! Favorite Quote: “Your education doesn't determine whether or not you're going to be a successful entrepreneur.” Ryan Horn Connect With Ryan: Coach Ryan Horn Extraordinary Man Extraordinary Man Podcast A How To Get Involved: Find Jason on Instagram & Facebook.
