Studies show that employee well-being, job satisfaction, retention and productivity all increase with a compressed schedule. In a recent six-month trial in the UK, nearly 90% of companies that gave a four-day workweek a try kept with it over a year later. But is it as good as it sounds? And how exactly does it work across different industries? Today, we're talking with a researcher and veteran HR leader about the rising popularity of compressed schedules. We'll also hear from one employer about how she transitioned her family business to a four-day workweek and what it's like to work there now from one of the company's team members. Join us! This episode was produced by Katherine Ceicys. Guests: Timothy Munyon, associate professor of management at Haslam College of Business, University of Tennessee Knoxville Tracey Power, chief people officer at Vaco, a global talent solutions company based in Nashville Erin Richardson, third generation owner of family business, All-American Pest Control Adrian Zavala, operator, All-American Pest Control Further Reading and Listening A study in the UK followed 60 companies that implemented a four-day workweek. Learn more about the results from this NPR story, These companies tried a 4-day workweek. More than a year in, they still love it To learn more about the results of several studies on four-day workweeks, read this story from CNN, 4-day workweeks may be around the corner. A third of America's companies are exploring them. Academic researcher and guest Tim Munyon shared some insight about a recent study published out of Iceland in this WATE-TV story, Is a 4-day workweek worth it? What a UT business expert says. Many restaurants are embracing the four-day workweek by only staying open for four days per week. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. Kathryn will sing the title role in Marble City Opera's production of Susannah on June 8, 9, and 10, 2023.  Frank thinks he smells cigarettes from the work crew across the street because the whole-house fan is drawing in air through the open windows.  A work crew has been building a swimming pool across the street since March. Frank's neighbor rented a port-a-potty for the workers. The neighbor's children have been playing with their pool toys in the front yard while they wait for the pool to be finished.  Frank was in his pajamas working on his 104.9 LakeFM radio show when he got an email asking him to appear on Living East Tennessee on WATE-TV that afternoon. He got himself camera-ready and made it to WATE by 3:15. When he walked in, he blew an air kiss to Tala Shatara but new co-host Kerjan Donovan saw it and was surprised. Right before they began Frank's interview, Kerjan noticed that Tala was still wearing earrings from an earlier segment with Kendra Scott jewelry.  This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Buy books and other merchandise autographed by Body Farm founder Dr. Bill Bass at https://bonezones.com/ including Body Farm t-shirts. You can also get several of Sam Venable's books, signed by the author and the new book by former UT counsel Ron Leadbetter.  Frank has already started editing new current events questions for the 2024 season of Tennessee Scholars' Bowl. One of the producers at East Tennessee PBS has asked Frank to find funny segments from the 2023 season so they can use them in social media posts over the summer.  CBS Mornings recently had a segment about high school quiz shows. The reporter had been a quiz show contestant when he was in high school. The report featured some academic quiz shows that air on CBS affiliates in their markets. You can watch the report here: https://youtu.be/PRdCxMkTXyg  Kathryn attended the Opera America conference and spoke up about singers who want to work in management but still continue singing. It's common among conductors but rare among singers. The industry mistakenly assumes singers going into management will give up singing.  Frank and his wife Jere went out to dinner for her birthday. The restaurant would not seat them without a reservation. Frank asked if he could make a reservation and got a reservation for twenty minutes later.  Kathryn will sing in a concert called Stalactites, Sopranos, & Stilettos at Cherokee Caverns on August 19, 2023. Frank's friend Tala Shatara is filling in for Kathryn Frady. Tala is the host of “Living East Tennessee” on WATE-TV and the author of the book Finding Plan B. Frank will be on “Living East Tennessee” on Friday.  Frank is mentioned in chapter 8 of the new Missy Barrett book, The Case of the Thoughtful Thief by Elyse Bruce. He will read the chapter aloud on Thursday, April 28 at 3pm in the King Family Library, 408 High Street, Sevierville, TN.  Frank was in the FBI Citizens Academy with Tala's father. He once asked if he could bring Tala for a tour of Frank's radio studio. Tala wonders if her parents were too pushy. Frank points out that broadcasters love it when young people are interested in their careers.  Frank has three of his fig cuttings on display in the background. One is Brown Turkey, one is Celeste, but he doesn't know the third variety. Frank got mad at a squirrel that was digging in one of the fig pots. Some critter took a bite out of a fig leaf.  Frank and his wife Jere watched some Biblical shows for Easter. Someone posted a link to every time Anne Baxter says “Moses” in The Ten Commandments. They were watching Jesus of Nazareth on The Roku Channel and saw a commercial for a bikini trimming tool.  Tala hits the “skip ads” button on YouTube videos. Frank looked into buying a YouTube ad. He would only be charged when a viewer watches more than half of the ad.  Tala notices digital ads for products she's been thinking about. Frank wonders if both the human and the AI are picking up on the same clues to think about a product.  Tala says Instagram speaks her love language. She watches pranks on TikTok but hasn't made a TikTok video. Frank got caught up watching reels of products being manufactured, such as wire hangers, which reminded him of the movie Mommie Dearest.  Frank ate his “emergency Peeps” that had a use-by date in 2017. They were a little stale but otherwise edible. He had been saving them to toast over a fire. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Our next guest is David Crocker! Most people believe serving others is a nice thing to do, but it doesn't really make any difference. David knows serving others is an overlooked but powerful change agent to make our communities better places to live. He knows there is no area of life that a serving mindset cannot improve. Having worked with thousands of people over 15 years motivating and equipping them to serve others, David is considered an expert in this field. His work spans 25 states and 4 countries and continues to spread. He has appeared on WRAL-TV, WBIRTV, WATE-TV, WRJZ-Radio, and published numerous articles. He's the author of the book “Compassionaries: Unleash the Power of Serving”. In episode 238 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out how David equipped over 2,300 congregations in 25 states and four countries with the Inasmuch model of compassion ministry, why students need to be thinking about what they are doing and the transformational power of serving, whether this trend of service to others will continue to grow with Gen Z, the benefits of serving to the students and the organizations who serve, the characteristics of those who serve, the challenges of serving, how student organizations can determine which organization in the community is the best one in the community to serve, and how students can use their service opportunities to attract more like-minded students into their organizations. In-person tickets are sold out but streaming tickets are still available at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets  Kathryn has done several television, radio, and print interviews this past week. People who don't know Kathryn's schedule are asking her to go places and to answer questions about events that are months away.  Frank and his wife Jere will be in a Front Page Follies style tribute to Matt Hinkin on Thursday, February 24, 2022. The event is a fundraiser for PJ Parkinson's Support Group. David Haley Lauver wrote six parody songs that honor Matt. Lori Tucker found a giant picture of Matt's face in the basement at WATE-TV.  Frank went to a business lunch at Twin Peaks on Valentine's Day. All of the customers in the restaurant were men. The waitresses were dressed in red lingerie for the holiday.  In the Fall, Frank got some apple seeds and peach pits from two of his neighbors. He planted the seeds and pits in buckets with garden soil. He left the buckets outside during most of the winter but brought them inside in the middle of February. One of the buckets has a green sprout. He thinks it might be a peach sapling.  Frank is trying to root some fig cuttings in the basement. He wonders if some of his friends and neighbors will ask for fig cuttings. Kathryn suggests that he try selling his fig cuttings.  This episode is sponsored by The Middleburg Barn at Fox Chase Farm. Jere was surprised to receive a hydrangea plant for Mother's Day. Their kids thought about ordering the gift online but decided instead to send money to Frank via PayPal and have him buy the plant and an Amazon gift card. Frank bought the gifts on Friday but tried to hide the PayPal transfer from Jere until Monday. Jere and Frank were about to do some work in the yard when their neighbor Ted asked them to look at his hydrangea tree, which has weeds and honeysuckle growing in the middle of it. Krisha got a vintage faux-fur hat from her friends. She stayed off social media for a month, returning on February 1 to share posts about the Krisha & Frank Show and the partnership with SeeMoreSmokies.com. Krisha & Frank realize that some content they might have posted on social media is better off being saved for the podcast. Krisha made tea when she arrived at the house. Frank can't understand why he has so much tea in the house. He suspects that the tea Krisha is drinking has been in the house for many years. Krisha noticed that the microwave was still very clean. Frank's wife Jere had scrubbed the microwave two weeks ago in preparation for a visit from a WATE-TV cameraman. Frank has kept in clean by putting a paper plate over his food as he reheats it. He reuses the plate similar to the way his mother-in-law did. Krisha had dinner with a friend but didn't want to wash dishes and risk putting them away wrong. When Frank's kids visit they sometimes put away kitchen utensils in different drawers. Krisha went to Walmart to buy wiper blades. At the same time, Frank was in Sam's Club and his wife was in Walmart. Krisha found Jere in the store to say hi. Frank was surprised that Krisha travels to the West Knoxville Walmart. She says shoppers are more likely to wear masks at that location. Frank says it's because of the proximity to Trader Joe's. Frank was recently interviewed by Neal Michaels and John Ashton on The Approach Shot podcast. Krisha noticed that they mispronounced her name as “Kreeesha.” Frank thinks it's because Amazon Alexa also mispronounces her name that way. Krisha rhymes with Tricia.
