(00:01) Importance of Consistency in Golf Improvement This chapter explores the challenges of maintaining consistency in golf performance, especially when students fail to practice what they learn during lessons. I, John Ashton, along with Golf Magazine Top 100 teacher Jeff Smith, discuss the common issue where students see immediate improvement in lessons but fail to sustain it due to a lack of discipline in practicing outside of class. Jeff shares a story about a student who experienced significant improvement during lessons but regressed because he didn't incorporate the taught techniques into his routine. We emphasize the importance of doing the necessary homework and ask students to engage with their coaches actively to develop effective practice habits. Jeff highlights the need for students to take notes, ask questions, and consistently apply what they learn to avoid repeating the same lessons. Ultimately, the key to consistent improvement lies in integrating the learned skills into a regular practice routine. (08:21) Pre-Shot Routine and Golf Improvement This chapter explores the significance of a pre-shot routine in golf, with insights shared by Jeff Smith, a top 100 golf instructor. We discuss how consistency in preparation, like ensuring correct ball and foot placement, can lead to better results on the course. Through anecdotes, we illustrate how golfers can improve their game by adhering to these routines, comparing it to the repeated efforts required to pass college courses. We also share a light-hearted look at the peculiar mix of businesses along the Tamiami Trail in Florida, reflecting on the unexpected blend of luxury and everyday establishments. Overall, we emphasize the importance of practicing diligently to achieve continuous improvement in golf. (14:35) Improving Golf Swing in Simple Steps This chapter focuses on the fundamentals of golf swing mechanics, emphasizing the importance of alignment, posture, and grip to improve consistency and performance. I share insights from a coaching session with a golfer who initially struggled due to perceived physical limitations. By assessing his natural body movements and setting him up in a way that aligned with his capabilities, we improved his swing effortlessly. This approach highlighted how often golfers create their own obstacles by setting up incorrectly. Through simple adjustments and understanding one's body mechanics, the golfer was able to achieve a more efficient and effective swing, resulting in increased confidence and success on the course. (23:54) Golf Grip and Targeting Systems This chapter covers the nuances of golf grips and how they can impact a player's swing and shot accuracy. We explore a scenario where a right-handed golfer uses a thumb-on-top grip, typically ineffective for hitting a straight shot, likening it to techniques better suited for activities like chopping wood. The conversation highlights the importance of a proper grip and pre-shot routine, emphasizing that many golfers mistakenly blame their swing for errant shots when club face angle and setup play a crucial role. Through humorous anecdotes and insights from working with golfers and military rifle trainers, we illustrate how understanding the relationship between swing direction, club face angle, and targeting systems can transform a player's game, removing doubt and enhancing precision on the course. (30:31) Improving Targeting System in Golf This chapter explores the intricacies of targeting systems in golf, particularly focusing on bunker shots. We discuss the importance of positioning and swing direction to ensure sand is thrown toward the target, thus reducing risk and improving accuracy. By adjusting the body and club face alignment, golfers can better match the swing path to the intended target. Additionally, we highlight how the position of the ball in the swing arc affects the outcome, suggesting that a forward ball position can lead to more successful shots. In a practical illustration, I share a personal experience on a challenging par three, demonstrating how applying these lessons—such as assessing wind direction and selecting the appropriate club—led to a successful shot while others fell short. (35:56) Club Selection and Ego in Golf This chapter takes us through the nuances of golf club selection and the importance of understanding one's own capabilities on the course. We explore a personal experience where I opted for a four hybrid club despite advice to the contrary and achieved a successful shot, emphasizing the value of over-clubbing in certain situations. I discuss an upcoming session with a Korn Ferry Tour player who is grappling with a minor swing issue that has major effects on his performance, particularly on long par threes over water. The conversation highlights the common tendency among golfers to underestimate the importance of club choice and overestimate their own hitting distances, often leading to poor decisions and mistakes. By sharing anecdotes of playing partners and their habits, I underline the impact of ego and habitual thinking on golf performance, suggesting practical ways to manage expectations and avoid costly errors. (41:25) Instructor Advice and Ego in Golf This chapter explores the challenges and nuances of receiving and applying advice in golf, particularly focusing on the impact of ego and pride in learning. We discuss the differences in how men and women handle advice, noting that women often ask more questions and admit when they need help. I emphasize the importance of developing a consistent routine to build confidence, such as checking the club face and taking practice swings, to ensure a balanced and powerful swing. Ultimately, the key takeaway is the importance of working on the specific areas your instructor advises, which will lead to significant improvement in your game.

(00:01) Golf Season Kickoff and Equipment Upgrades This chapter captures a lively conversation between John Ashton and Jeff Smith as they discuss the start of the new golf season. With temperatures rising, John is excited to hit the golf course for the first time this year, despite not having touched his clubs since November. Jeff humorously suggests replacing all golf gear as a fresh start and warns about the unpredictability of the first round back after a layoff. We explore how the lack of expectations can lead to surprisingly good performances and the common cycle of initial success followed by disappointment. Emphasis is placed on setting realistic expectations and committing to practice, especially in areas like putting and chipping, which many golfers overlook. The discussion highlights the balance between enjoyment and the pursuit of improvement, while also sharing anecdotes about golf course experiences and the quirks that come with them. (13:45) Preseason Golf Preparation and Rules This chapter offers practical advice for preparing for the golf season after a winter hiatus. We explore the importance of arriving early for a thorough warm-up session, which includes stretching and practicing swings to prevent injuries. Emphasis is placed on the maintenance of golf equipment, such as cleaning club grips to avoid slippage. The chapter also highlights the significance of being prepared for unpredictable spring weather, suggesting items like hand warmers and stocking caps to keep warm. We touch on the idea of using hand warmers to keep golf balls warm in cold weather, while humorously sharing personal anecdotes about golfing in chilly conditions and the physical impact of mis-hits on cold days. (24:35) Early Season Golf Club Selection Strategy This chapter focuses on strategic golfing tips for early season rounds, emphasizing the importance of over-clubbing due to lack of practice and soft ground conditions. We explore why golfers often aren't in mid-season form at the start of the season and how taking extra club can compensate for slower swings and softer ground that absorbs energy, reducing shot distance. The discussion highlights a case study of a young golfer who learns the value of using a stock swing with a higher club for consistency and reliability, rather than relying on a hard swing with a lower club, which often results in greater shot variability and missed opportunities for pars and birdies. The advice centers on choosing the right club for a smoother, more controlled swing, thus maintaining or improving one's handicap by ensuring shots land closer to the target with less spray and variability. (32:47) Golf Posture This chapter explores the common golfing advice of "staying down on it" and questions its validity. We discuss the misconception that golfers must keep their posture and head low throughout their swing, which can lead to back issues and restrict movement. Highlighting examples like Dustin Johnson, we contrast this approach with golfers who allow for upward extension during their swings, such as Lexi Thompson and Justin Thomas, to achieve a wider arc and faster club speed. We emphasize the importance of extending arms for power and maintaining consistency in hitting the ball's sweet spot, ultimately challenging the traditional "stay down" advice in favor of more effective and health-conscious techniques. (42:40) Improving Golf Swing Extension and Impact This chapter focuses on the dynamics of a golf swing, challenging the notion that golfers should keep their heads completely still. We explore the importance of maintaining a consistent chest height throughout the swing, while acknowledging the necessity of using vertical force to optimize power. Emphasizing the role of arm extension, we discuss how successful golfers excel at striking the ground precisely, ensuring effective ball contact. By examining videos of proficient ball strikers, we highlight the significance of hitting the ground accurately to achieve a great shot. We encourage golfers to apply these insights to improve their game, no matter their experience level.

(00:01) Weekend Golf Guys This chapter explores the lighthearted banter and golfing wisdom shared between John Ashton and Jeff Smith. As the winter thaw begins, we touch on the humorous differences in climate between snow-laden Indiana and sunny Southern California. Jeff recounts a playful exchange with a director of golf about the unexpected presence of clouds in California, highlighting his signature sarcastic humor. Shifting gears, we address the often confusing advice given on how tightly to grip a golf club, critiquing vague analogies like holding a bird or a tube of toothpaste. Jeff shares a practical experiment he conducted with a squeezy ball to illustrate how grip strength is subjective and varies from person to person. Through this exercise, we emphasize the need for individualized understanding of grip strength to improve one's golf game. (12:08) Improved Grip Pressure for Better Control This chapter focuses on the importance of grip control in improving a golfer's game. We emphasize that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to finding the right grip pressure, but achieving the right grip is crucial for consistent performance. I share an exercise where golfers use only their left hand to test their control during a backswing, often revealing a lack of grip stability. By adjusting the placement of the club in the hand, particularly at the base of the pinky finger, golfers experience better control and power. This newfound control not only enhances ball striking but also boosts confidence, leading to improved overall performance. Through this simple adjustment, golfers feel a stronger connection with the club, making it an extension of their arm, without altering their grip orientation in a way that feels uncomfortable. (23:54) Right Hand Force in Golf This chapter explores the transformative process of improving golf skills, starting with the short game to build confidence and control. We begin by focusing on the importance of making solid contact with the ball and understanding the mechanics behind it. By addressing common issues like scuffing and sculling, we help players achieve immediate success and comfort around the greens. As they progress, they gain control over longer shots, seeing straighter and cleaner ball flights. The discussion highlights the significance of using both hands effectively, particularly the often-overlooked role of the right hand, in enhancing performance. Through practical exercises and common-sense comparisons to other sports, we demonstrate the importance of applying pressure to the backside of the shaft for better control and power. The goal is to shift the mindset from simply turning the body to engaging the hands actively, leading to more accurate and powerful swings. (34:40) Generating Power Through Firm Foundations This chapter explores the essential role of stability and a solid base in generating power during athletic movements. We examine how athletes, from golfers to baseball and tennis players, leverage a firm connection to the ground to maximize force and efficiency. By using examples such as the stance of a pitcher or the balance of a tennis player, we illustrate how coiling against a stable base enhances performance. A key takeaway is the transformation seen in a golfer's swing when proper stance adjustments are made, resulting in a significant increase in driving distance. This insight underscores the importance of efficient energy use and the potential for improvement by refining one's foundational technique. (43:43) Weekend Golf Game With Those Guys This chapter focuses on the concept of "powerful effort" versus "effortless power" in the context of improving your golf game. We emphasize the importance of understanding the distinction between making a strong effort and harnessing natural, effortless power to enhance performance on the course. By exploring this idea, we provide listeners with insights and strategies to refine their skills. We encourage listeners to revisit past episodes for further entertainment and valuable information, reminding them of the wealth of content available to help improve their game. We also invite questions and interaction with Jeff for personalized advice, reinforcing the interactive and supportive community we strive to create. (00:01) Golf Instruction and Filtering Information This chapter features a discussion on the overwhelming amount of information available online, particularly in the realm of golf. I, John Ashton, am joined by Jeff Smith, a top 100 golf teacher, as we explore the challenges faced by golfers in navigating the plethora of advice and tips available. We emphasize the importance of filtering this information effectively, suggesting that if advice doesn't consider fundamental aspects like grip, stance, or posture, it might not be useful. We also highlight the need for personalized guidance rather than one-size-fits-all solutions, cautioning against following advice that doesn't align with your unique setup and swing mechanics. (12:16) Customizing Golf Grips for Success This chapter explores the simplicity and effectiveness of customizing a golf grip based on an individual's natural arm hang. By instructing players to let their arms hang naturally and marking where their knuckles align on an imaginary club, I demonstrate how to establish a grip that feels comfortable and intuitive. The method is straightforward: aligning the mark with the top of the shaft, positioning the thumb correctly, and ensuring the club face remains square during the swing. This personalized approach allows golfers to find their unique grip without overcomplicating the process, leading to more accurate shots and faster improvement. The chapter emphasizes the importance of letting the body's natural mechanics guide the grip to enhance performance and enjoyment of the game. (18:51) Simplifying Golf Swing Mechanics This chapter explores the simplicity and natural feel of hitting a golf ball effectively. We discuss how many recreational golfers tend to overcomplicate their swing, making the process seem more difficult than it needs to be. By emphasizing the importance of a natural arm hang and grip, we reveal that the key to a successful swing is minimizing manipulation. This realization often surprises golfers, as they find that an uncomplicated approach leads to straighter and higher shots with greater ease. The conversation highlights the mental shift needed to achieve this, noting how overthinking can disrupt a golfer's natural ability. We also humorously acknowledge how golfers, despite being generally intelligent, can forget basic principles when they step onto the course. The goal is to help golfers understand that achieving a smooth, fluid swing is about maintaining simplicity and letting the body work naturally. (23:16) Grip Variation in Golf Swing This chapter tackles the complexities of golf grip techniques and emphasizes the importance of finding a grip that works for each individual golfer rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach. We discuss the misconception that all professional golfers use the same grip, sharing insights from a study of 25 pros, which revealed significant variations in their grip styles. The conversation underscores that a grip suitable for one pro might not work for another due to differences in their physical attributes and swing objectives. We also highlight the risks of relying too heavily on generalized advice from books or online sources without considering personal suitability. Through a recent golf school experience, I stress the importance of understanding one's unique swing mechanics and maintaining focus on consistent practices that yield positive results, rather than constantly seeking new information. The goal is to encourage golfers to recognize what works for them and caution against the confusion that can arise from information overload. (34:33) Optimizing Stance and Balance for Speed This chapter focuses on the often overlooked fundamentals of improving a golf swing, emphasizing balance and setup over the swing mechanics themselves. We explore how starting positions, stance width, and foot flare can significantly enhance a golfer's ability to swing faster and maintain balance. By allowing golfers to find their personal "red line" or speed limit through experimentation, they can unleash their full potential without sacrificing stability. The conversation also draws parallels to baseball pitching, highlighting the importance of proper foot placement and pressure for generating power. Ultimately, we underscore that mastering these basics can make the game simpler and improve scoring, especially when dealing with uneven lies on the golf course. (42:28) Mastering Timing and Performance in Golf This chapter focuses on the importance of timing and confidence in golf, especially when making contact with the ball. We explore how nerves can lead to poor contact and how missed opportunities to communicate or act can affect performance. I share a story about a nervous new golfer who missed a swing, and demonstrate how to maintain composure and "sell" a miss as a practice swing. By keeping a calm demeanor and not letting mistakes affect you, you can regain your confidence and improve your game. The key takeaway is learning how to control your reaction and approach, ensuring better results in future golf outings.

Forty years ago this December saw the release of the most popular AND influential action comedies of all time.  This was star Eddie Murphy's immediate follow-up to his two breakout hits the previous years, 48 Hrs. in '82 and then Trading Places in '83, only THIS time he was the sole star above the title for the first time.  And Eddie did not disappoint with this fish-out-of-water comedy about a Detroit cop named Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) who travels across the country to Beverly Hills to investigate the murder of his best friend.  Even though that might not SOUND like the set-up for an comedic film, Murphy's gift for improvisation and a game supporting cast (John Ashton, Judge Reinhold playing two local cops whom he teams up with in Beverly Hills) bring a lot of humor to the proceedings regardless, along with a clever Oscar-nominated script from Daniel Petrie Jr and top-flight helming from director Martin Brest whose follow-up would be the even better Midnight Run four years later.  What results are memorable characters, quotable lines, and of course a kicking soundtrack including an iconic synth score from Harold Faultemeyer.  The Heat IS On! RUNDOWN   It's a rough week in Seattle sports, with the Mariners eliminated, the Huskies losing to Rutgers, the Cougars being dominated by a top running back, and the Seahawks falling to the Lions. Jed Fisch's mounting criticism is no big win either [let's read some listener emails]. Mitch and Hotshot also discuss the Seahawks' upcoming game against the New York Giants, labeling it as a crucial win for the Seahawks. They emphasized the importance of securing a victory before facing tougher opponents like the 49ers, Falcons, Bills, and Rams in the following weeks. Mitch and Jacson Bevens from "Cigar Thoughts" discuss the Seattle Seahawks' recent 42-29 loss to the Detroit Lions highlighting some defensive struggles due to missing key players and the dominance of Lions' quarterback Jared Goff. Despite Geno Smith's strong performance, the defense couldn't slow down the Lions' offense. They also highlight Seattle's adjustments in the running game and the impressive impact of Kenneth Walker. Rick Neuheisel on college football; starting with a recap of Rick's successful betting streak, where he achieved a 3-1 record in his recent picks. They focus on the Alabama vs. Georgia game, analyzing Alabama's Jalen Milroe and Georgia's defensive effort. The conversation shifts to standout college football players, including a 17-year-old making waves and the controversial call in the Virginia Tech-Miami game. They discuss officiating challenges and their implications for the College Football Playoff system. It's the end of the Seattle Mariners' 2024 season. Despite sweeping the Athletics and finishing 85-77, the team failed to make the playoffs. Joe Doyle and Brady Farkas express concern about the future, emphasizing the uncertainty of maintaining such a strong rotation, especially given potential injuries.   GUESTS   • Seahawks No-Table | Jacson Bevens (Cigar Thoughts) • Rick Neuheisel | CBS College Analyst • Mariners No-Table | Joe Doyle (Over Slot) & Brady Farkas (Sports Illustrated Now M's Editor)   TABLE OF CONTENTS 1:16 | "Fun with Audio," 4:10 | Jed Fisch, not so great! 13:00 | Mitch announces; BEAT THE BOYS password 17:05 | Yes, yes, Seattle had lots of injuries going into this game. The list goes on. 30:19 | GUEST: Seahawks No-Table: Jacson Bevens (Cigar Thoughts) and Mitch rehash the Hawks' 42-29 loss in Detroit on Monday night. Is there a way to be encouraged with the result considering all the defensive stars the Seahawks were missing? Geno Smith continues to play elite football & Kenneth Walker is a real difference-maker. 41:39 | GUEST: Rick Neuheisel (CBS College Football analyst) is back for his weekly segment presented by Taco Time NW. Huskies fans seem to have really turned on Jedd Fisch. Neuheisel reacts & tells of his friendship with Fisch. Plus Rick's Picks is off to a 3-1 start against the spread. 1:10:24 | GUEST: Mariners No-Table: Brady Farkas (SI Now - Mariners) & Joe Doyle (Over Slot) have lots to say about the M's missing the playoffs in a year where their starting rotation was incredible. MUSIC Foo Fighters are reportedly 'set to take a hiatus' while Dave Grohl works to 'earn back the trust of his family' after his affair scandal. Prince's house from "Purple Rain" is being offered on Airbnb for 25 one-night stays. The house has been transformed into a shrine to both the movie and Prince. His former bandmates Wendy and Lisa helped set it up.   Chappell Roan backed out of a festival gig to, quote, "prioritize my mental health." RIP: Singer, songwriter, award-winning actor and activist Kris Kristofferson died Saturday (September 28th) at his home in Maui, Hawaii at the age of 88. Born June 22,1936 in Brownsville, Texas, Kristofferson was a Rhodes Scholar and entered into the military at the urging of his father who was a Major General in the Air Force. After an honorable discharge he moved to Nashville and worked as a janitor at a recording studio while he pursued a career in songwriting. He got his big break when Johnny Cash recorded his song, “Sunday Morning Coming Down.” Many of the songs he wrote, including “Me and Bobby McGee,” “For the Good Times,” “Lovin' Her Was Easier” and “Help Me Make it Through the Night” became classics. He began a recording career in the 1970s and won four Grammy Awards including two for his work with his then-wife Rita Coolidge. Between 1985 and '95, he recorded three albums as a member of the country supergroup The Highwaymen, with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004. He also had a successful movie career, appearing in more than 90 films, including Blume in Love, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Semi-Tough and A Star is Born with Barbra Streisand, for which he won a Golden Globe for Best Actor. Starting in the first decade of this century, Kristofferson dealt with a number of health issues, including loss of memory. He was diagnosed first with fibromyalgia and later with Alzheimer's disease, but those were later revealed to have actually been Lyme disease. When he received the correct drugs for it, much of his memory returned. Kristofferson is survived by his wife of 41 years, Lisa; eight children, Tracy, Kris Jr., Casey, Jesse, Jody, John, Kelly, and Blake; and seven grandchildren. They offered this statement on his passing:  “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news our husband/father/grandfather, Kris Kristofferson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 28th at home. We're all so blessed for our time with him. Thank you for loving him all these many years, and when you see a rainbow, know he's smiling down at us all.”  RIP: John Ashton, the actor, best known for his role as Detective Sergeant John Taggart in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, died at age 76. I don't think I'm fully recovered from Oktoberfest yet. Either way, we recapped the crazy weekend and looked ahead to the new month with a list of things to look forward to in the month of October! Packers almost beat the Vikings yesterday, and the Brew Crew finished the season with a loss to the Mets. Had three celebrity deaths over the weekend, including Maggie Smith, John Ashton, & Kris Kristofferson. Cool story about a hospice patient who wanted to skydive one final time, and a weatherman who saved someone's life during the recent flooding due to Hurricane Helene. We learned more about the latest TikTok fad, "Sleepmaxxxing" This week's "Monday Morning Throwback" included more highlight clips of Scott Robert Shaw as he gets set to retire in a few weeks. Did you see the Auburn cheerleader who knocked over the Oklahoma football player on Saturday? And during today's "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a guy who tried to get his handyman friend to clean up a murder scene, a zookeeper who was mauled to death by a lion, a 100 year-old woman who's dying wish was to go ziplining, a couple that tried to sell their baby for some beer & $1,000…a poop-volcano, and a guy who was hiding underneath women's cars at a carwash to get closer to their feet. Tonight, we'll read about the history of bread-making in Europe and America, from “The History of Bread”, written by John Ashton and published in 1905. Snoozecast first aired this story back in 2020. The text mentions windmills, which in the past were structures built to harness wind power to perform strenuous tasks, specifically they were well know for milling grain. But one of the earliest working windmill designs was found in Ancient Persia and used to both pump water and grind grain. Windmills were adopted throughout late medieval and early modern European times. At their peak, Europe contained an estimated 200,000 windmills in the year 1850. With the Industrial Revolution, they were eventually replaced by steam mills and internal combustion engines. — read by 'V' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! (00:00) Family Golf Trips This chapter of "The Weekend Golf Guys" is a lively discussion featuring John Ashton, Jeff Smith, and special guest Kelly Stenson. We explore Kelly's recent golf trip to Scotland with her 15-year-old son, emphasizing the joys and challenges of golfing in Edinburgh and surrounding areas. Kelly shares how they managed to play numerous rounds of golf, taking advantage of the extended daylight hours. We reflect on the value of traveling and playing golf with family, reminiscing about our own experiences and encouraging listeners to create similar memories. The conversation underscores the importance of seizing opportunities to bond over golf, whether it's abroad or within the United States. (13:09) Scottish Golf Trips This chapter takes us on a vivid journey through Kelly's recent golf trip to Scotland. We explore her experiences navigating the narrow, left-hand drive roads and balancing her love for golf with some brief, spontaneous sightseeing in Edinburgh and St. Andrews. Anecdotes about driving challenges and amusing moments with backseat drivers add a touch of humor. We also discuss memorable golf courses like Cruden Bay and Brora, each with its unique quirks, such as foggy weather and animals on the course. Additionally, we touch on the charm of local Scottish towns, their distinctive eateries, and the cultural immersion that comes with exploring beyond the greens. Lastly, we ponder the accessibility of golf courses in Scotland, comparing them to the public courses commonly found elsewhere. (25:15) Golf as a Unifier This chapter takes us on a journey through various experiences with golf, highlighting its unique ability to bring people together. From personal anecdotes about exploring the stunning landscapes of Montana and the allure of Banff and Lake Louise, we transition into the world of online golf competitions, where I reached number five in the world and built lasting friendships. The narrative continues with stories of real-life meetups, including an unforgettable event at Covered Bridge in Southern Indiana, and a touching moment when the mayor welcomed our group with open arms. We explore how golf unites people from all walks of life, whether through charity fundraisers or golf schools in South Carolina. The authenticity and vulnerability required in golf create a level playing field, breaking down barriers and fostering genuine connections. Finally, we reflect on the role of instructors in supporting players, especially when they struggle, ensuring everyone feels included and valued on the course. (34:20) Junior Golf Success and Bourbon Trails This chapter celebrates the achievements of young golfers, particularly highlighting Ava Bunker's impressive performance at the World Juniors in Pinehurst. We reflect on the joy and fulfillment that comes from working with junior players compared to the high expectations placed on PGA Tour players. We also discuss the potential for creating golf travel trails similar to the Bourbon Trail in Kentucky, such as the I-64 golf trail, to attract travel golfers and promote collaboration among golf courses. Additionally, we share personal anecdotes about tasting spirits, from bourbon in Louisville to whiskey in Ireland, and the acquired taste required for brown liquors. The conversation wraps up with a teaser about an upcoming golf question and a mention of travels to Scotland. (39:31) Bunker Play Techniques for Success This chapter explores the challenges and techniques of playing out of deep bunkers, specifically referencing experiences at iconic courses like St Andrews and North Berwick. We discuss the importance of using a lofted club, taking plenty of sand, and maintaining good technique to avoid common mistakes such as falling back or trying to lift the ball. Additionally, we share anecdotes about famous bunker struggles, including Bobby Jones' legendary difficulty at St Andrews, and provide tips like the "hinge and thump" method to improve bunker play. Whether you're a skilled bunker player or still learning, these insights aim to help you tackle even the most daunting bunker shots. (43:55) Greenside Sand Play Technique This chapter explores the importance of mastering greenside sand play in golf, emphasizing the key elements of quality sand and speed control. We share a unique analogy comparing bunker shots to removing a spider from a swimming pool—highlighting the technique of hitting behind the ball to let the sand propel it out. Additionally, we express gratitude for Kelly's return and her travel stories, and we encourage listeners to try the bunker tip the next time they find themselves in the sand. Enjoy this insightful and engaging conversation on improving your golf game.

Forty years after the film Beverly Hills Cop (1984), Detroit police detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) returns for the fourth installment in the Beverly Hills Cop film series. After being burned by Eddie's legacy sequel Coming 2 America (2021), we were cautious about Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. We share our love for Eddie in the opening, along with Harold Faltermeyer, who composed the great "Axel F" theme song. This movie was released on Netflix, where it quickly rose to the most-watched film. Many older actors returned for this one, including Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot as Serge. The film also stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kevin Bacon, and Taylour Paige as Axel's daughter. The film is directed by first-time director Mark Molloy. We tried to bring some love and light to this one!

(00:01) Golf Rules and Friendly Matches This segment features a lively discussion on some proposed changes to golf rules that could benefit recreational players. John Ashton and Jeff Smith talk about the controversial idea of not having to play out of a divot in the fairway, suggesting it should be considered ground under repair until the grass grows back. They also humorously propose a rule where losing a ball should only cost a player $5 without an additional stroke penalty, especially in non-competitive games. Jeff brings up an interesting twist on handling out-of-bounds shots with the concept of a "brovisional," allowing players to drop a ball near the out-of-bounds area to speed up play. Throughout, they balance their suggestions with considerations for both friendly and competitive matches, aiming to make the game more enjoyable for weekend golfers. (09:59) Rules and Etiquette in Golf This segment unpacks the controversial USGA rule regarding teeing a ball outside of the tee markers. We explore the implications of the rule, which states that doing so incurs a one-stroke penalty but allows the ball to be teed up anywhere else on the course. We debate whether this could lead to players exploiting the rule by teeing up right next to the hole for easy birdies or eagles, and consider the potential chaos this could cause in professional tournaments like the US Open. Additionally, we touch on how strict adherence to certain golf rules can sometimes make the game less enjoyable for amateurs, and clarify the rule about accidental ball movement during a practice swing. (23:25) Common Rule-Breaking in Golf This segment explores the often informal and flexible nature of golf rules in casual play versus the strict adherence required in tournament settings. We highlight how common practices like mulligans, gimmies, and taking liberties with ball placement are not officially recognized but are frequently used by casual players to speed up the game or ensure a better lie. In contrast, we discuss the importance of strict rule enforcement in competitive play, where players and parents closely monitor ball positions to prevent any unfair advantage. We also touch on the need for players and their support teams to be knowledgeable about the rules to maintain fairness, particularly in junior tournaments, where some may try to exploit the rules. Overall, we examine the cultural differences between casual and competitive golf and the impact of these practices on the game. (34:02) Improving Golf Skills With Training Grips This segment delves into the rules of golf, focusing on those that may need revision or could enhance the game if altered. We explore the benefits of training grips, which help beginners achieve proper hand placement and see immediate success, making the game more enjoyable and less frustrating. By discussing a potential tiered system for training grips, we envision how this could cultivate a generation of skilled golfers who learn to compete effectively. Additionally, we touch on the issues of parents interfering in junior golf tournaments, highlighting the need for fair play and proper rule enforcement to foster genuine skill development. (42:36) Value and Controversy of Golf Rules This segmentexplores the significance of adhering to the rules in golf and life, emphasizing the integrity and character-building that come from facing challenges head-on rather than taking shortcuts. We discuss the value of playing by the official rules, even when they lead to difficult situations, as a metaphor for dealing with life's hardships without resorting to dishonesty. We also touch on the debate between those who strictly follow the rules and those who play more casually, highlighting the importance of a balanced perspective. Ultimately, we agree that while some rules might seem unnecessary, they collectively contribute to a fair and enjoyable game.
