An aviator's journey from a former commercial airline transport pilot, flight instructor, flight examiner, and author. In the news, the SpaceX Starship first-stage booster returns to the launch pad, the NTSB reports on two B737s that were cleared for the same runway at the same time and the incident where an A350 clipped the tail of a CRJ-900. Also, navigating airline dress codes, an airport executive director resigns, and an air museum plans to expand. Guest Lola Reid Allin is the author of Highway to the Sky: An Aviator's Journey. She's a former commercial airline transport pilot, flight instructor, flight examiner, and SCUBA divemaster. Lola's work has appeared in national newspapers and publications, and in juried national and international shows. Her professional aviation affiliations include Women in Aviation International, The 99s: International Organization of Women Pilots, and the Northern Lights Aero Foundation. In her book, and with us, Lola shares personal aspects of her flying experiences and aviation career. She describes things she has learned from her student pilots, her relationships with others, the Cessna 150 she owned, and some particularly interesting flights she has piloted. Lola's story is about how learning to fly gave her wisdom and taught her to live her life. She had to defy the societal norms of the era, such as the notion that “women belong in the kitchen and the bedroom” and "they shouldn't take jobs from men who need to support their families.” An adventurer who lived with the Maya in Mexico and Belize for three years, Lola has explored more than sixty-five countries in depth. When she isn't backpacking Baffin Island, trekking the Andes or the Himalayas, forging deep into the Guatemalan jungle, summiting Kilimanjaro, or guiding a dogsled team in the Yukon, she lives with her husband of twenty-six years in a small community east of Toronto, Canada. She is a professional speaker and co-lead of the First Canadian 99s Education & Outreach Committee and for the Northern Lights Aero Foundation. Find Lola on her website, X, and Facebook. Aviation News Two planes cleared to use same runway in Nashville near-collision, NTSB says In September, Alaska Airlines Flight 369, a Boeing 737 MAX 9, was cleared for takeoff at Nashville International Airport. At the same time, Southwest Airlines Flight 2029 was cleared to cross the same runway. The Alaska Jet aborted the takeoff, which blew out the plane's tires.  The NTSB said one ground controller cleared the Southwest jet, just 23 seconds before another controller cleared the Alaska plane. Pilot of larger plane was looking away from smaller plane in Atlanta airport mishap, report says A Bombardier CRJ-900 operated by Endeavor Air, a Delta regional subsidiary, was waiting on a taxiway. A taxiing Delta Air Lines Airbus 350 clipped the tail of the CRJ with it's wingtip, knocking the tail off the smaller plane. The NTSB preliminary report finds the CRJ stopped 56 feet (17 meters) short of the hold line painted on the taxiway. As the A350's right wing extends 106 feet (32.3 meters) from the center of the jet to tip, that 56-foot distance may have been the margin between a hit and a miss. Do Airlines Really Have Dress Codes? What to Know Every airline has a contract of carriage and these typically include a cause addressing attire. These leave a lot of discretion to the airline staff and each airline is different: Southwest Airlines: Wearing clothes that are lewd, obscene, or patently offensive. American Airlines: Dress appropriately; bare feet or offensive clothing aren't allowed. Delta Air Lines: When the passenger's conduct, attire, hygiene or odor creates an unreasonable risk of offense or annoyance to other passengers. United Airlines: Passengers who are barefoot, not properly clothed, or whose clothing is lewd, obscene or offensive. Spirit Airlines: Barefoot or inadequately clothed,

Kodey Bogart, Retired Army Aviator, Educator, Entrepreneur, & Author: turning adversity into her superpower.   As many of us are familiar, adversity is a universal and inevitable part of life that most of us face through challenges like illness, loss, financial hardship, and the growing pains of life. Adversity is non-discriminatory, affecting all individuals regardless of gender, race, or socioeconomic status. No person is immune from it. While adversity introduces difficulties, it also plays a crucial role in personal growth and grit. Within society, we have witnessed how adversity drives innovation, strengthens community bonds, and enhances empathy. In the face of adversity, the history of women in aviation is a testament to resilience. Since the early days of flight, women like Élisabeth Thible, who flew in a hot air balloon in 1784, and Aida de Acosta, who in 1903 became the first woman to pilot a motorized aircraft, have been relentlessly reaching for the skies. The early 20th century saw women like Emma Lilian Todd designing successful airplanes and Georgia "Tiny" Broadwick performing parachute jumps, pushing the boundaries of what was considered possible for women at the time. Even with these successes, these pioneering women were often not considered serious aviators or contributors to the field. Despite their early involvement, women were also often restricted to working privately or in support roles in the aviation industry before 1970. Nonetheless, they were breaking records and competing in air races against men within the first two decades of powered flight. During World War II, while most female pilots were restricted from military flight, many served in auxiliary services and support roles. As time progressed, women continued to make progress, often in the background contributing greatly to our industry, with limited resources and a lack of community in their workplace.   The modern landscape for women in aviation is certainly improving with several organizations and initiatives dedicated to supporting women in the workforce, however, the data still reflects a significant gender gap. We learned from the FAA Women in Aviation Advisory Board report how women make up less than 20% of the aviation workforce, with even lower representation in pilot and maintenance roles. As of 2022, women account for just 9.57% of all pilots. When we exclude student licenses, the figure drops to 6.34% for non-student female pilots. The five-year trend leading up to 2022 does show growth in the number of female pilots, but the percentage increase is modest, sometimes being referred to a flatline growth.   Reflecting on the importance of gender equality in our industry and thinking about the conversations I have had with women in the industry, I've come to believe that a significant way to better support women is by actively listening to their stories, specifically on adversity. Hearing how they've transformed challenges, failures, and difficult moments into avenues for growth not only fosters equality but also empowers the next generation, who sometimes feel the pressure to be perfect. These storied provides practical guidance and perspective on resilience and perseverance, illustrating how to rise above obstacles and advance with determination. On a personal note, when I talk about adversity during keynote presentations, I find it to be healing as I share these experiences with others.  With this, we invited Kodey Bogart, Retired Army Aviator, Educator, Entrepreneur, and Author, to be our podcast guest this week and asked her to share her story. Kodey Bogart's career journey exemplifies the enduring spirit of women in aviation, demonstrating how resilience can turn adversity into triumph. Raised in Michigan with a love for the outdoors, art, and nature, Kodey faced an unfortunate challenge in her childhood that set her on a path of service rather than setbacks. She enlisted in the military after high school, where she discovered her passion for flight. As an Army Warrant Officer and Aviator, she was recognized with two Air Medals and a Sikorsky Rescue Award for her service during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Post-military, Kodey's aviation career continued as she flew over 2,500 hours of accident-free flight time, serving in air ambulance and aviation law enforcement roles. Her commitment to lifelong learning earned her a Master's in Aviation Safety from the Florida Institute of Technology and a Bachelor's from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, specializing in Helicopter Safety. Currently pursuing her Doctorate in Aviation with an emphasis on Safety and teaching part-time as an Adjunct Professor at FIT, Kodey balances her academic pursuits with motherhood, community engagement and authoring a series of books to educate and inspire the youth.

I finally earned a Bachelor's Degree in International Relations and Political Science online with American Military University when I was 35 years old. The next year, the Coast Guard sent me to Harvard's Kennedy School of Government to earn a Master's in Public Administration. In this episode of the Aviatrix Book Review podcast, I talk about how that experience made me reflect on what I was truly passionate about, my circle of influence, and where I thought I could really effect change, and how all of that led me to the Aviatrix Book Club and ‘Literary Aviatrix'. I also share my vision for the future and express my deep gratitude to everyone who has brought their positive energy, participation, and encouragement to this project. I am so grateful for your support and friendship, and excited to connect with more of you in the future. Shouts out to: all of our Aviatrix Writers and Aviatrix Book Club members; Women in Aviation, International; Aviation for Women Magazine editor, Kelly Murphy; A Chick in the Cockpit's Erika Armstrong; and Shaesta Waiz and Michael Wildes of the Women Soar Group.  Links to everything: https://linktr.ee/literaryaviatrix

In this episode, I sit down with Alicia Hunt, a Commercial Pilot and Flight Instructor. Before becoming a pilot, Alicia had a 13 year career in film, commercial work and theatre in Los Angeles. Alicia found she could never stop looking for her next gig and never turn off her phone and risk missing a call from her agent. She burnt out and planned a trip to Asia with her best friend. But the trip didn't rejuvenate Alicia, it confirmed her life needed to shift. She says, “I thought I would come back refreshed. And instead, I got back and felt a natural point of separation. It was a natural point to change my life. I was ready to find my next step.”Alicia knew she needed something hands on and very “boots on the ground”. Alicia thrives on high intensity situations and those around her offered suggestions such as becoming a surgeon, a 911 operator or a police officer. There was a very consistent theme.Alicia enlisted the help of a career counselor, and she provided some blunt analysis: “Alicia, you are a complex person. There will be no perfect fit for you. Whichever career you choose, you will be leaving large parts of yourself at the door.” During this time, Alicia heard of the pilot shortage— that there weren't enough people to fly planes, let alone women and people of color. Through twists and turns along the way, Alicia got herself into the sky and now teaches others how to fly. Alicia works to recruit women to the field and mentors both women and people of color to secure scholarships for flight school.Alicia, like other pilots, is critical of her landings. Asking herself these questions helps her to remember, perfect is not the goal: “Did you bend any metal? Did anybody get hurt? Did anybody die? No? Then it was a good landing.” For Alicia, being imperfect is part of the job.Highlights from Alicia:"I took a train all the way across China from the eastern edge of it all the way to the edge of Tibet, and made a lot of stops in between. It was incredible. And when I finished the trip, I thought I would come back and feel refreshed, it was the vacation of a lifetime. And instead, I got back and I was at a natural point of separation. It was a natural point of being ready to change my life. I was ready to find my next step.""One of the things I knew I wanted out of a new career is I wanted something high demand. I was really tired of being in a market that was saturated. And where I knew I had so much to give in that field. But so did everyone else. And I was tired of constantly pushing and pushing and pushing to look for work.""One of my favorite things about acting is how you must be present. You can't be anywhere else. You have to be completely immersed in your character in the moment and the scene and the dialogue. And it's the exact same when you're flying a plane. You can not be distracted with anything else. You need to be listening to air traffic control. You need to be ready to deliver your own line which is coming up soon. You know your traffic control talks then you talk and it's a script. Let me tell you, if you can do Shakespeare you can sure as heck can do air traffic control."Don't Miss a Beat. Less than 10 percent of airplane pilots are women. If you discount student pilots, about six percent of pilots are women. The average pilot today is a white man in his early 60s. Boeing's workforce outlook says 612,000 new pilots will be needed in commercial aviation alone over the next 20 years. That's why it's notable that three women pilots graduated last week from Eastern Mennonite University's Lancaster campus with Bachelor of Science degrees in Leadership and Organizational Management with an Aviation Concentration. On Tuesday's show: Gas prices are set to hit record highs this week thanks to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. We learn why they won't be falling any time soon. Also this hour: Today is International Women's Day. So, we meet two pioneering women in Greater Houston. First, we revisit a conversation with Stephanie Hertzog about women in oil and gas leadership. The Pasadena native is CEO of Houston-based Sodexo Energy & Resources North America. Then we revisit a conversation with Lynn Rippelmeyer. The Magnolia resident was the first female pilot to fly a Boeing 747 and the first female to captain a 747 transatlantic flight. Then, we discuss why formerly churchgoing, Southern Republican women who become atheists probably aren't talking about it, according to new research from Rice University and West Virginia University. And they say write what you know. So, that might explain why Houston novelist Jennifer Murphy wrote a new tale about a painter and her daughter on the run from a man...who might not even be real. She knows about painting, having earned an MFA in it. And she knows about being a single mother. She tells us how both factored into the new novel Scarlet in Blue. She has an event at Murder by the Book Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

In this interview with author Kristin L. Gray, she talks about her middle-grade novel THE AMELIA SIX: AN AMELIA EARHART MYSTERY. Set in Amelia Earhart's childhood home, this is a fun read for ages 8-12 that incorporates quirky characters, fun facts about Amelia, and the rich history of the Ninety-Nines. It's also a great book for promoting STEM with young girls and boys (my 9-year-old son loved it.)The blurb: Amelia Earhart's famous aviator goggles go missing and eleven-year-old Millie has to find them before the night is over in this girl-powered middle grade mystery.Eleven-year-old Amelia Ashford—Millie to her friends (if she had any, that is)—doesn't realize just how much adventure awaits her when she's given the opportunity of a lifetime: to spend the night in Amelia Earhart's childhood home with five other girls. Make that five strangers. But Millie's mom is a pilot like the famous Amelia, and Millie would love to have something to write to her about…if only she had her address.Once at Amelia's house in Atchison, Kansas, Millie stumbles upon a display of Amelia's famous flight goggles. She can't believe her good luck, since they're about to be relocated to a fancy museum in Washington, DC. But her luck changes quickly when the goggles disappear, and Millie was the last to see them. Soon, fingers are pointing in all directions, and someone falls strangely ill. Suddenly, a fun night of scavenger hunts and sweets takes a nosedive and the girls aren't sure who to trust. With a blizzard raging outside and a house full of suspects, the girls have no choice but to band together. It's up to the Amelia Six to find the culprit and return the goggles to their rightful place. Or the next body to collapse could be one of theirs. Be sure to check out Kristin's other books: VELONIA BEEBE TAKES CHARGE (middle-grade fiction), KOALA IS NOT A BEAR (picture book), and ROVER THROWS A PARTY (picture book).

From pioneering and outback flights to delivering Spitfires or tackling the jungles of New Guinea, Australian Women Pilots tells of ten Australians with extraordinary stories. Women have been flying since the early days of aviation but, with a few notable exceptions, they have rarely been visible or well known. Kathy Mexted shares the feats of trailblazers like Nancy Bird Walton, Deborah Wardley, who was told by Ansett that women couldn’t be pilots, and Gaby Kennard, the first Australian woman to fly solo around the world. Others are less known but their stories are just as extraordinary – pilots involved with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Britain’s Air Transport Auxiliary, the RAAF, aerial agriculture or long-range ferrying. Kathy Mexted is a writer, photographer and editor of Airsport magazine. Ninety years ago, daring air races across the U.S. routinely attracted crowds that would dwarf attendance at spectacles such as the Super Bowl today. “I’m talking about a half million people – paying customers – during the Great Depression coming out to watch races over the course of a weekend,” Keith O’Brien said during Friday’s St. Louis on the Air. “An additional half million would watch for free from the hoods of their automobiles parked on nearby highways … in this little window of time, air racing was one of the most popular sports in America.” The pilots vying for the prize were usually men, and the few women pilots were often ridiculed – until they combined forces to break down barriers and make aviation history.

"Aviation, this young modern giant, exemplifies the possible relationship of women and the creations of science. Although women have not taken full advantage of its use and benefits, air travel is as available to them as to men." Welcome back to Vanished: Amelia Earhart. Tonight I take a little break from the midwest and travel to Morro Bay, California; one of my very favorite spots in the world. When we started this series there was never a question as to whether or not we'd discuss an organization that Amelia Earhart held very close to her heart. We just had to get the right people to do it, and tonight we have them. While the show thus far has covered all of the ways that Amelia Earhart was different from her fellow colleagues, tonight, I thought we'd try a different approach. After all, during the golden age of aviation, there was one organization that brought all of the pioneering women of aviation together for a greater cause. Well...ninety-nine of them at least.  SHOW NOTES The official website for the Ninety-Nines (https://www.ninety-nines.org/) The official website for the "Museum of Women Pilots" (https://museumofwomenpilots.org/) in Oklahoma City  The official website for the "Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum (https://www.ameliaearhartmuseum.org/) " in Atchison The official website for the "International Forest of Friendship (http://www.ifof.org/) " in Atchison The official website for the WASP (https://waspmuseum.org/) (Women Air Force Service Pilots)  Jackie Cochran @ Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacqueline_Cochran)   The Ninety-Nines @ Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninety-Nines) "Vanished: Amelia Earhart" was recorded in its entirety by the Zoom H1N microphone. Only 0.2% of the U.S. population are certificated pilots… and out of those pilots, only about 6% are female. Since the days of Amelia Earhart, this select group of women pilots have joined together for networking, encouragement, training, and busting through any stereotypes in this male-dominated industry of aviation. Today on the podcast we have the honor of introducing you to three women who live on Maui and are members of The Ninety-Nines, Inc., Int’l Organization of Women Pilots. Elsie MacGill was a woman of unusual capability and resilience. Born in Vancouver on March 27, 1905, she was the first woman to graduate with an electrical engineering degree from the University of Toronto, then the first woman to receive her masters in aeronautical engineering from the University of Michigan. Although she contracted polio the same year, the determined young engineer defied the odds and taught herself to walk with two metal canes. She went on to become the first woman to design and test aircraft. Though her disability prevented her from becoming a pilot, she insisted on being a passenger on all test flights to better understand the planes’ performance. During World War II, MacGill became chief engineer of the Hawker Hurricane, a fighter plane used during the Battle of Britain. In 1943, MacGill married William Soulsby, moved to Toronto and started her own consulting firm. Beyond work, MacGill became an author and actively supported women in business. Among her numerous honours were the Order of Canada, the 1967 centennial medal and the Amelia Earhart medal from the International Association of Women Pilots. She was also inducted into Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame and the Canadian Science and Engineering Hall of Fame. She died in 1980 at the age of 75.
