What if working less could help us live more — with greater energy, purpose, and joy?In this eye-opening conversation, Ashish Kothari sits down with Karen Lowe, South Africa's lead advocate for the 4-Day Workweek movement and founder of 4 Day Week South Africa, to explore how shorter work weeks are transforming productivity, culture, and well-being across the globe.Karen shares how a passion project in Cape Town became the world's fourth major pilot of the 4-Day Workweek — and the results are nothing short of revolutionary: higher revenue, lower burnout, better sleep, deeper engagement, and teams that flourish together. This episode challenges the modern obsession with “more” and makes a powerful case for the 4-day week as both a science-backed productivity strategy and a human sustainability movement.

October 16, 2025: Amazon is cutting 15% of its HR team, signaling a shift from administrative people functions to data-driven, AI-powered HR. Younger workers are turning to TikTok and ChatGPT to understand their benefits instead of relying on HR portals. Facebook is re-entering the job market, bringing hiring into local digital communities. Microsoft says AI could save over 12 billion hours a year—but only if we manage “shadow AI” responsibly. And billionaire CEO Ken Griffin predicts a future where humans work just three days a week. In this episode, Jacob Morgan breaks down what these stories really mean for leaders. What happens when HR becomes more automated than human? Why are employees trusting algorithms and influencers more than their companies? And how do leaders create balance between productivity and purpose in an AI-driven world? Each story reveals a deeper truth: technology may change how we work, but leadership defines why we work.

What if the key to 90% staff retention was radical trust from day one? Marilla Akkermans launched Equality Media and Marketing while raising her first child, after experiencing her own worth drop when she became a mother. She decided to build something different: a business with a four-day work week that actually works, 19 inclusive care policies, and trust given upfront, not earned. In this conversation, Marilla shares how they ran a three-month trial of the four-day work week to prove it could work for everyone involved, why efficiency should be rewarded with time back (not more work), and why tracking mouse movements is lazy leadership. She gets real about the grit required, swimming in doubt, and her vision for true equality in an industry where women make up 51% of the workforce but only 30% of leadership. This one's for anyone who's ever thought: there has to be a better way. ----------------------- Craving inspiration? Send us a textA four-day work week is not a gimmick. Done right, it can reduce burnout, stabilize output, and help you keep great people. Our guest today shares that after two years of doing a 4-day work week model, they saw a 46% increase in staff morale and wellbeing. This is only one of the many amazing benefits Imagine Canada has seen! In this episode of The Small Nonprofit Podcast, Maria Rio sits down with Jodene Baker, Vice President of Research, Advocacy and External Relations at Imagine Canada. Jodene oversees national research and policy efforts supporting Canada's nonprofit sector. Imagine Canada also builds tools like Grant Connect and advocates federally to strengthen the sector. Maria and Jodene discuss the challenges of starting, decent work practices, and how to measure the unmeasurable. 4-Day Work Week for Nonprofits - The Highlights: Why try a four-day week in the first place The sector is stretched: lower average pay, rising demand, and chronic burnout. Imagine Canada saw the same internal pressures and chose to test a four-day week to improve staff wellbeing and retention while holding impact. Their model is 100 percent pay, 80 percent time, 100 percent outcomes Imagine Canada works Monday to Thursday and closes Fridays. There is no pay cut and no compressed schedule. This pilot began in January 2023 and is now extended through 2026. It remains a pilot so they can keep measuring and adjust if needed. Preparation made the shift workable They joined the Four Day Week Global pilot, created a cross-functional staff group, set clear goals, and defined success metrics. They also cleaned up calendars: Audited and shortened meetings Made Monday afternoons meeting-free internally Blocked Fridays well in advance to build the habit Measured results: wellbeing up, sick days down, impact stable They track roughly 50 metrics across wellbeing, productivity, and outputs.  Recruitment and retention improved Candidates now cite the four-day week as a reason to apply. Staff attrition has dropped exponentially.

When the Covid-19 pandemic struck in 2020, hundreds of millions of people worldwide suddenly found themselves working from home for the first time. Since then, calls for more flexible and shorter working hours have continued to gain momentum.Proponents of a four-day week argue that employees, business and society at large would be better off with one less day of work. Those in favour of reducing working hours also say it would help tackle burnout, gender inequality, unemployment and improve general health and wellbeing. However, opponents say reducing working hours could cause economic damage, waken people's work ethic and put a strain on public services. They've also warned that industries like education, medicine and hospitality, which require staff seven days a week, 24 hours a day, cannot simply change their working format. The Netherlands, where the average working week is now 32 hours, is one country where the four-day model is quietly changing people's lives. How did the Dutch embark on this working model, how successful has it been and what downsides are there to cutting back the working week?Financial Times columnist and reporter Sarah O'Connor discusses the shift in the Netherlands to a shorter working week and examines whether the Dutch model could function in other countries.Presented by Sorcha Pollak. Do You Think A Four-Day Work Would Actually Work?Seven in 10 workers feel they could be just as productive in a four-day work week, according to new research. Things That Make Insomnia WorseStaying in bed longer - Experts advise a sleep routine of getting up at the same time every morning and only getting into bed when you're truly tired.Cutting out screens completely - Lying in bed without something to focus on can lead to overthinking, which is terrible for sleep. That's when having something to distract your thoughts can be helpful, but stick with something calm, like a nature documentary or soothing podcast.Swearing off caffeine forever - Caffeine blocks adenosine, which makes you sleepy, so if an afternoon cup of tea keeps you awake at night, skip it. Trying too hard to sleep “right” - Trackers, gadgets and products to enhance sleep make it easy to obsess over snoozing, but that can backfire and give you anxiety. Your body knows how to rest and micromanaging it can add pressure, instead of helping.Expecting consistency - Thanks to things like age, stress, hormones and even the weather, some nights sleep will be easier than others, and that's normal. You won't get a solid eight hours every night, so don't expect it or beat yourself up if the popular advice isn't helping you.⠀House Noises You Shouldn't IgnoreRushing water noises - Do a quick check for pooling water in areas that are prone to leaking, like your sink or bathroom, and checking the water meter is also a good idea. Buzzing from lights - If you hear any sounds coming from your outlets or switches, call a licensed electrician.Whistling or hissing noises near gas-based appliances - This could be a “really serious indicator of a potential danger in your home that could lead to a house fire,” Dripping faucet sounds - It's less of an immediate emergency, but it can cost you more the longer you ignore it.Gurgling toilets - If it gurgles after you flush, that would be indication that you either have a backup and the water can pass but it's struggling. Second Date UpdateAmanda called us about Gabe. They matched on Bumble and met for coffee in Redwood City. Amanda said the conversation was fun, she was smiling the whole time, and she really thought there was chemistry. Recorded during HITEC, #NoVacancyNews had the privilege of chatting with Michael Schubach Shubach from Rosen Hotels & Resorts to explore how #hoteltechnology, people-first thinking, and bold ideas could reshape the hospitality industry. ✨ Key highlights from our conversation: • Why Rosen is exploring a 4-day workweek with 5-day workweek pay as a real benefit of AI-driven productivity • How sharing automation gains with employees—rather than only owners—can build unmatched loyalty • Tackling class divides in hospitality by returning more time (instead of promising remote work that frontline staff can't access) • Using technology to remove workplace monotony and open paths for growth, not just cost-cutting • What it means to truly care for your people beyond the usual perks and policies It's not just about doing things differently—it's about rethinking why we do them at all.

Are we working too much? “Time is a vital resource for us to connect with each other, to connect with the earth and …to come together in solidarity, to try and fix what's wrong.” We have accepted the 5 day work week as the status quo—caught in a cycle of working more so we can spend more, just to keep up with the Jones'. But what if there's a better way to live: For our own happiness, the economy, and our planet?  Economist and Sociologist Juliet Schor, has spent decades researching the way we work, and her new book - The Four Day Week - invites all of us to imagine a future where work is restructured to serve human needs, not the other way around. Show Notes Resources: “Four Days A Week” by Juliet Schor “The Overworked American” by Juliet Schor Similar Episodes: Oliver Burkeman Ben Cohen Jay Jakub Transcript Want more NSE? It makes sense that if you want to cut down on the amount of spam email you get, just unsubscribe from those emails. WAIT! That could make things worse. There is a better way to handle spam emails, and I begin this episode by explaining how. https://www.yahoo.com/news/warning-hitting-unsubscribe-unwanted-emails-115900557.html Predicting the future is a losing game most of the time. Still, a lot of influential people spend a lot of time and money trying to do it. People forecast where the stock market is going, they predict trends in fashion, technology and everything else. It makes you wonder if all that effort and money trying to predict the future actually helps to make it happen. So why is the future so unpredictable? What forces do shape the future? Joining me to discuss this is Glenn Adamson, former director of the Museum of Arts and Design, New York. He has held appointments as Senior Scholar at the Yale Center for British Art and he is the author of the book, A Century of Tomorrows: How Imagining the Future Shapes the Present (https://amzn.to/442HOfb). People have been floating the idea of a 4-day workweek for over 60 years. Yet it is still not the norm. Why hasn't it caught on? Is it a good idea? Will it ever be a real thing? Here with some interesting insight into the 4-day workweek is Juliet Schor. She is an economist, and professor of sociology at Boston College. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, People and 60 Minutes. She is also the author of a book called Four Days a Week: The Life-Changing Solution for Reducing Employee Stress, Improving Well-Being, and Working Smarter (https://amzn.to/4jQSvr0). There are a lot of weight loss programs and strategies available for people. But what if there was one simple, common sense, easy to do tactic that is proven to help people lose weight effectively? There is. It so simple. And I will tell you exactly how to do it. https://www.ornish.com/zine/proven-benefits-keeping-food-journal/ Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
