Experimenting with a 3-day workweek

In this week's episode of Lessons from a Quitter, I share a personal experiment I've started in my own business: taking Mondays and Fridays off to create a three-day workweek. While it sounds dreamy on the surface, the reality has been much messier—and that's exactly why I wanted to bring it to you. We dive into how hustle culture and perfectionism make rest feel uncomfortable, why our brains resist slowing down, and how important it is to give ourselves permission to experiment. This conversation is about challenging old rules, embracing imperfection, and creating more space for what you truly want.

Could You Make A Four-Day Work Week Work?

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 3, 2025 36:42 Transcription Available

Do You Think A Four-Day Work Would Actually Work?Seven in 10 workers feel they could be just as productive in a four-day work week, according to new research. Things That Make Insomnia WorseStaying in bed longer - Experts advise a sleep routine of getting up at the same time every morning and only getting into bed when you're truly tired.Cutting out screens completely - Lying in bed without something to focus on can lead to overthinking, which is terrible for sleep. That's when having something to distract your thoughts can be helpful, but stick with something calm, like a nature documentary or soothing podcast.Swearing off caffeine forever - Caffeine blocks adenosine, which makes you sleepy, so if an afternoon cup of tea keeps you awake at night, skip it. Trying too hard to sleep “right” - Trackers, gadgets and products to enhance sleep make it easy to obsess over snoozing, but that can backfire and give you anxiety. Your body knows how to rest and micromanaging it can add pressure, instead of helping.Expecting consistency - Thanks to things like age, stress, hormones and even the weather, some nights sleep will be easier than others, and that's normal. You won't get a solid eight hours every night, so don't expect it or beat yourself up if the popular advice isn't helping you.⠀House Noises You Shouldn't IgnoreRushing water noises - Do a quick check for pooling water in areas that are prone to leaking, like your sink or bathroom, and checking the water meter is also a good idea. Buzzing from lights - If you hear any sounds coming from your outlets or switches, call a licensed electrician.Whistling or hissing noises near gas-based appliances - This could be a “really serious indicator of a potential danger in your home that could lead to a house fire,” Dripping faucet sounds - It's less of an immediate emergency, but it can cost you more the longer you ignore it.Gurgling toilets - If it gurgles after you flush, that would be indication that you either have a backup and the water can pass but it's struggling. Second Date UpdateAmanda called us about Gabe. They matched on Bumble and met for coffee in Redwood City. Amanda said the conversation was fun, she was smiling the whole time, and she really thought there was chemistry. But Gabe never reached out again.

Are we working too much? “Time is a vital resource for us to connect with each other, to connect with the earth and …to come together in solidarity, to try and fix what's wrong.” We have accepted the 5 day work week as the status quo—caught in a cycle of working more so we can spend more, just to keep up with the Jones'. But what if there's a better way to live: For our own happiness, the economy, and our planet?  Economist and Sociologist Juliet Schor, has spent decades researching the way we work, and her new book - The Four Day Week - invites all of us to imagine a future where work is restructured to serve human needs, not the other way around. Show Notes Resources: “Four Days A Week” by Juliet Schor “The Overworked American” by Juliet Schor Similar Episodes: Oliver Burkeman Ben Cohen Jay Jakub Transcript Want more NSE? It makes sense that if you want to cut down on the amount of spam email you get, just unsubscribe from those emails. WAIT! That could make things worse. There is a better way to handle spam emails, and I begin this episode by explaining how. https://www.yahoo.com/news/warning-hitting-unsubscribe-unwanted-emails-115900557.html Predicting the future is a losing game most of the time. Still, a lot of influential people spend a lot of time and money trying to do it. People forecast where the stock market is going, they predict trends in fashion, technology and everything else. It makes you wonder if all that effort and money trying to predict the future actually helps to make it happen. So why is the future so unpredictable? What forces do shape the future? Joining me to discuss this is Glenn Adamson, former director of the Museum of Arts and Design, New York. He has held appointments as Senior Scholar at the Yale Center for British Art and he is the author of the book, A Century of Tomorrows: How Imagining the Future Shapes the Present (https://amzn.to/442HOfb). People have been floating the idea of a 4-day workweek for over 60 years. Yet it is still not the norm. Why hasn't it caught on? Is it a good idea? Will it ever be a real thing? Here with some interesting insight into the 4-day workweek is Juliet Schor. She is an economist, and professor of sociology at Boston College. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, People and 60 Minutes. She is also the author of a book called Four Days a Week: The Life-Changing Solution for Reducing Employee Stress, Improving Well-Being, and Working Smarter (https://amzn.to/4jQSvr0). What if I told you that working just two and a half days a week could actually be your new normal? More time with your family, more energy for your passions, and more freedom to live—without sacrificing your income or impact. Sounds wild, right? But it's possible—and in this episode of the Happy Hustle Podcast, I'm breaking down exactly how I pulled it off. First things first: I didn't start here. I used to grind nonstop—100+ hour workweeks, chasing big goals in the big city, feeling burned out and unfulfilled. Eventually, I hit a breaking point and knew something had to change. That's when I started to design my life on purpose. I created a weekly structure, tested out new systems, and got clear on what actually mattered. Over time, that led me to working just 2.5 days a week—with more results, more happiness, and more balance. Here's how it works: It's not just about the structure—it's about the systems. I use time-blocking religiously and follow Parkinson's Law: work expands to the time you give it. So I limit tasks on purpose. I use the Pomodoro technique—45 minutes of deep work, 15 minutes of rest. Apps like Sunsama and Notion help me plan my day with intention. I set just three “Most Valuable Tasks” each day and focus only on those. The rest? Either gets scheduled for later or let go.Delegation and automation are non-negotiables. I ask myself, “What would break if I stopped doing this?” If the answer is nothing, I cut it. For what's essential but not in my zone of genius, I delegate using the 10-80-10 rule: 10% to set it up, 80% delegated, 10% to review. I rely on tools like Zapier and an organized team to automate as much as possible. I also create SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for everything so I'm not the bottleneck. Once things are documented and repeatable, it's easy to scale without burning out.One big mindset shift that made this lifestyle possible? Realizing busy doesn't equal productive. I stopped glorifying hustle and started chasing impact. I focus only on the 20% of actions that create 80% of the results—whether that's nurturing partnerships, closing deals, or creating content that builds brand trust. If it doesn't move the needle, I say no.And speaking of “no”—boundaries are everything. I trained my team and clients to respect my schedule. I don't reply to business texts on Sundays. I protect off-grid time and unplug regularly to reset my nervous system. People quickly adapt when you set clear expectations—and you'll find you're actually more respected when you own your time. Was this shift easy? Nope. It took trial and error. I had to hustle hard at first to build the foundation. But now, with recurring income streams, dialed-in systems, and a focused schedule, I get to enjoy a life that's rich in time, not just money. So if you're tired of the grind and want more freedom without giving up your goals—start small. Time-block your ideal week. Identify your needle-moving tasks. Eliminate the noise. And build the life you actually want to live, one intentional move at a time. Buckle up buttercups, we're diving into the panacea or peril of the four-day workweek. As always, we get to use our critical minds and decide for ourselves.   SHOW NOTES The five-day workweek is one of the the results of worker safer reforms in the 1930s.  As a society, we concluded and adopted laws that provided greater compensation for workers when they worked in excess of 40 hours in a week.   This was consistent with what has been a 100 year trend of working less - at least until the 1970s—when we started working more. This working more may explain the growing number of companies and countries (aka Iceland) that have adopted the four day work week,   Let's start with Iceland—the poster child for all kinds of worker and gender rights.  After a wildly successful pilot starting in 2015, 90% of its workforce now enjoys a 36-hour week, full pay, and more time for fjords, knitting, or just plain breathing. The best part? Productivity didn't drop. In some sectors, it rose, as did mental health and happiness. It sounds like employee satisfaction and improved mental health for the win!! Here in the U.S., four-day weeks are gaining ground. In 2024, 22% of workers said their employers offer one (up from 14% in 2022). But not all 4-day weeks are created equal. Some compress 40 hours into four 10-hour marathons, while others reduce hours and pay and, the best for employees, reduced hours without a reduction in pay.  Still, it's not all sunshine and extra Sundays. Critics warn of scheduling chaos, uneven workloads, and—gasp—selection bias in studies. And let's be honest, if the culture still glorifies overwork, slapping on a shorter week won't fix burnout. So what now? Tune in for the full scoop—history, data, debates, and what it takes to truly work less and live more.
