Here we are with Lauren Castro. She is an entertainment journalist, writer and social media specialist for Texas Monthly. She knew that she wanted to be a writer before she got to college. She genuinely enjoys learning from others and what their passions may be, how they got to where they are, what makes them tick, etc. She loves storytelling and everything that goes into it: the vulnerability in sharing your innermost thoughts, pouring your heart into a project that can potentially help others, refining your own words and arranging a piece to better tell a story. Once Lauren got to UT Austin, she was opened up to the world of journalism and how many facets there are to it. Reporting can come to you in so many ways (social media, video, podcasts, and traditionally, articles) and she just happened to land at a job that was in need of a social media editor. At Texas Monthly, she's been given the opportunity to work on my writing and report on topics she is interested in while also doing her main job which includes scheduling posts on all of our platforms, making sure each story is getting the promo it deserves, and keeping a finger on the pulse of the ever-changing media landscape. We will get to hear her favorite interviews and her upcoming professional goals as well as a few more sneak peaks for up and coming interviews.

Connection & military spouse advocacy with Jennifer Barnhill In Jennifer Barnill's research of studying the military spouse community, one theme stands out: the desire to belong. Although she can relate as a military spouse, it has become a sense of responsibility for her to collect data to support, represent and advocate for the military spouse community as a whole. Today's female veteran with Cat Corchado It's been 22 years since Cat Corchado transitioned out of the military as an Air Force veteran that served for 20 years. Although she has enjoyed most of her civilian life as a personal trainer, it's only been in the recent years where she's asked herself, "What's next?" It was during the heart of the pandemic when she realized it was time to start the Sisters in Service podcast. Do you use social media to help promote your professional persona? Well…if you are reading this on Linkedin, chances are the answer to the question is yes. I think we all utilize this platform in similar but also different ways. Some use to gather information that is helpful to their practice. Others use it as a networking and marketing tool. Some of us use it to promote our professional accomplishments or provide discussion of hot issues. But I think it is safe to say that gone are the days that it is simply used as a digital resume. This week on the Defense Never Rests we are joined by Mike Elkins who is a labor and employment attorney but also an avid speaker and content creator who is not afraid to put his name out there on hot issues. And sometimes putting himself out there made other people uncomfortable. But why? Because it was not “traditional”. Well, in my humble opinion, nothing good ever happened from doing something the same way over and over just because that is how it was done in the past. This applies for social media as well as litigation! Might as well mix it up and that is what Mike does! How do you use social media platforms – are they strictly personal or does your professional life bleed in?
