Brian Murphy is based in Raleigh and his title is Sports Investigative Reporter for WRAL TV. Of late there's been a lot to investigate at North Carolina's football program as Bill Belichick operates in a shroud of secrecy so thick that his players didn't have jersey numbers during the Tar Heels' recent spring game. In addition, Belichick's 24-year-old girlfriend has taken on a strange role within the football program as she regularly scrutinizes UNC's communications staff for not doing a better job protecting the image of Belichick and those below him (including Bill's son Steve, the Tar Heels' defensive coordinator). Here is an excerpt from Murphy's coverage of a spring game that was not remotely like most spring games: No numbers on the jerseys for any player throughout spring or in Saturday's final practice. No player interviews throughout spring or after Saturday's final practice. No assistant coach interviews throughout spring or after Saturday's final practice. Belichick spoke to the media near the beginning of spring practice ... and not again. Not even at the end of Saturday's event. Didn't even pick up the microphone to thank everyone for coming out or tell them how important their presence this fall would be. Murphy, a graduate of UNC, is a former newspaper sportswriter who covered Georgia Tech during the Chan Gailey era before moving to Boise and having a front-row seat to the Broncos' incredible rise to football prominence. He was there for Boise State's unforgettable 43-42 triumph over Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. Before moving back to his roots in Raleigh he lived in Washington D.C., where he covered Congress for the News & Observer of Raleigh.
Republicans in the North Carolina General Assembly voted to reduce powers for Democrats who won key races in the Tar Heel state this November. WRAL-TV's Laura Leslie explains what this vote means. Then, this weekend the Geminids meteor shower will be visible, but could be harder to see because of what's known as the Cold Moon, the last full moon of the year. Sky and Telescope's Kelly Beatty joins us. Former Pittsburgh media member Chris Lovingood of WRAL-TV broke a story about a BBQ meal that ended in a call to police.
If you've ever seen the GIF of a NC State football fan with his shirt off and twisting over his head like a helicopter, then you know 'Jake Jams' who was a recent guest on the Pack Therapy Podcast with Joe Giglio. During the show, Giglio played a portion of the interview with Jake about becoming famous for a GIF, why he stood on the wall at Carter-Finley Stadium and took his shirt off when NC State football beat Florida State football, and more. Also, Chris Lea of WRAL-TV joined the show to talk about being on baby watch as he's expecting his second child, and why Giglio was so mad at the press box at Clemson. Plus, Bomani Jones of ESPN stopped by to discuss the terrible play in the NFL, why people don't really like Russell Wilson, and more.
What is Dave Doeren really like? Is he as much of a jerk as Clemson fans like to think? Joe Giglio has covered N.C. State since Doeren's arrival in late 2012 and says the coach hasn't been easy to get to know during his long tenure in Raleigh. Giglio, formerly a longtime newspaper guy who is currently a radio talk-show host and contributor to WRAL TV, joined the podcast on the drive home from Clemson to talk about what Clemson's convincing victory meant for Doeren and the Wolfpack. A passage from the column Giglio wrote from Death Valley late Saturday night: While winning is in Clemson's DNA, NC State's double helix is laced with wasted shots and what-could-have-beens. Much of the '21 State team, which finished 9-3 overall and 6-2 in the ACC, came back for one more crack at the elusive ACC crown. The two main players that didn't — All-American left tackle Ickey Ekwonu and receiver Emeka Emezie — are proving to be a huge void to fill. Clemson's defensive front, even without injured star Bryan Bresee, dominated the Wolfpack blockers on Saturday night. “They won the line of scrimmage,” NC State coach Dave Doeren said. “Their D-line played really good.” The Tigers also got a bounce here and made a break there. That's what good teams do. Dabo Swinney's coaching staff has changed but the concepts remain solid. The basic premise — ride your stars, die with your fastball — remains as true as the ride down Route 76 into town is long and filled with radar guns.

The parent company of WRAL-TV says four Democrats on the North Carolina Supreme tossing out voter-approved constitutional amendments is what democracy looks like. In an anonymous editorial, Capitol Broadcasting Company (which owns WRAL) says the lawmakers never should have been able to ask voters to approve the measure because the legislature was elected under maps that were deemed to be illegal gerrymanders. But the standard laid out by the editorial (as well as the four NC Supreme Court judges) has few limiting principles that would constrain a court from tossing any laws passed by any legislature elected under gerrymandered maps. Plus, the Wake County District Attorney could be bringing a criminal charge against NC Attorney General Josh Stein over a campaign ad against his 2020 opponent. Stein's campaign accused Forsyth District Attorney Jim O'Neill of not testing rape kits. O'Neill's lawyer says DAs don't have control over those kits, the Attorney General knew that, lied in a campaign ad about it, and violated a 90-year old law against defaming political opponents. In his 55 years of life, Ed Piotrowski has never seen a blizzard --- until last week. The chief meteorologist at Myrtle Beach's WPDE-TV left behind the south and traveled to Boston, Massachusetts to experience his first and only blizzard. He traveled with his wife Cindy, and shared adventures with fellow meteorologist Greg Fishel, who was previously the chief meteorologist at Raleigh's WRAL-TV. Ed joins the Carolina Weather Group to tell us about his once-in-a-lifetime experience (which, of course, also came at a time when North Carolina and South Carolina were seeing their third straight weekend of winter weather here at home). The National Weather Service officially considers a winter storm to be a blizzard when for 3 hours or longer there are sustained wind or frequent gusts to 35 miles an hour or greater; and considerable falling and/or blowing snow (i.e., reducing visibility frequently to less than ¼ mile) See more of Ed's adventures on his Twitter account: https://twitter.com/EdPiotrowski/ LEAVE A TIP: https://streamelements.com/carolinawxgroup/tip SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PODCAST: https://anchor.fm/carolinaweather SUPPORT US ON PATREON: https://patreon.com/carolinaweathergroup VISIT OUR WEBSITE: https://carolinaweathergroup.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/carolinaweather/message

In addition to over 30 years of television news experience, this hard working, detail oriented reporter has authored 10 books; four memoirs, three true crime books and two children's books! Yvonne Simons reported on schools at places like WRAL-TV in Raleigh. But before that, she was a school teacher herself. Now she schools Stuart on what it’s like to be a black woman running a mostly white newsroom in a city that exploded last year - Portland, Oregon.
When a pivot during college sent him on a track from studying political science to broadcast journalism, Aaron Thomas already had an idea of where the best place to be a TV reporter might be: at WRAL, the local news station he grew up watching. Having now been a reporter at a few other local new stations outside of North Carolina, Thomas now has an even greater appreciation for the Triangle market he gets to cover. We talked to him about the journey to television, where Raleigh ranks as a place to be a news reporter and what a year of covering protests and pandemic events--all while adapting to safety precautions that kept him out of studio and away from photographers--and what the morale is in the news industry these days. We also asked about the best ways to eat thin mints and where social media fits in his work-life balance. Aaron is such a positive, upbeat spirit--it's hard not to come away from a conversation with him smiling! Please support the businesses who support us: Papa Murphy's Take N Bake Pizza of Raleigh and Steele Residential.Subscribe to Podcast Raleigh on your favorite podcast sites so you never miss an episode, and if you enjoy it we'd love for you to rate or read a comment:Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/podcast-raleigh/id1458907220Google: https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/ps/Inzk5woxrsjwf3zhd5vv3av4yeiStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/podcast-raleighSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6b3dVvLJfO0EqvDGQaFTAP

"What you see is what you get. I feel doing anything more is just too much work." Since he was 3, Brian had dreams of imitating the game show and television talent that he watched any chance he got. Sharing our stories in high school broadcasting class, we switched to sharing stories of a favorite friend of ours who worked in the industry for over 30 years and the legacy he left. Brian discusses the importance and rarity of being able to stay local throughout his career in local news and how his career has shifted to combat different roles he's received over the years at WRAL-TV. Naturally, the conversation takes a turn as we discuss the great game shows of the 70's and 80's as well as the hosts who made it happen. Brian is someone you could talk to for hours and hours, but we condensed this down to just under an hour for you!

F3 MIP / Recovery AOs WHAT IS MIP? • The name of the workout at the Charlotte Rescue Mission is a play on words with the name of the recovery center and the popular Tom Cruise movies: “Mission I’m Possible” • CRM’s “Rebound” is a drug and alcohol addiction recovery program that helps men and women overcome addictions through a Christ-centered 120 days drug/alcohol rehabilitation 12-step program • We are partnering with the Citygate network, a group of over 300 rescue missions nationwide that have programs similar to CRM • The F3 footprint overlaps nicely with CityGate’s footprint i.e. there are rescue missions in every city where F3 operates https://www.citygatenetwork.org/agrm/Locate_a_Mission.asp • Residents of these programs have everything at their disposal to conquer addictions except the first F in F3. They may have gyms or workout equipment, but most 12-step recovery programs are lacking one particularly important component and that is physical fitness • We find that doing an F3 workout may be the first time any of them have worked out since high school (or ever)! Also, an F3 workout replaces the feeling of being drunk or high with natural endorphins, a healthy high only attained by rigorous (F3 type) exercise • Addiction is synonymous with hopelessness and solitude whereas our workout is all about the brotherhood and fellowship and after just one workout the program residents totally get that • F3 seems like an integral ingredient or “secret sauce” to addiction programs and the phenomenally successful 12 step recovery programs that have saved millions of lives since they began back in 1936 • F3 MIP Expansion delivers on the mission of F3 to plant, grow and serve small workout groups for men for the invigoration of male community leadership • Once new members of the PAX graduate from their recovery program, we see them re-entering society with a feeling of empowerment and many go on to establish new AO’s and even come back to Q our workouts • F3 is rescuing sad clowns in recovery from isolation and addiction in Charlotte, Raleigh, Columbia and can do the same in every city in F3 Nation • The time to start planting is NOW so that when COVID-19 passes we will be up and ready to go nationwide* DIFFERENCES • F3 members who attend need to know this workout is NOT for them: it is to help others • MIP Workout Q’s need to Take the intensity of a normal workout to about 60%. Lots of 10 counts and more core than running. We want the new PAX members to COME BACK! • Start/Finish times require more flexibility because of individual rescue missions required meetings. I.e. if the workout starts at 9am but they are in chapel from 8-9am and the service runs over, we accommodate. Again, it is about THEM • Times are when it is convenient to the RM (Rescue Mission). I.e. every Saturday at 9am, every Friday at 3pm, every Tuesday at 5.30pm and so on • The COT is modified (and is the best part) where one F3 Nation member begins with a prayer, then RM PAX members can pray if they feel led, followed by closing prayer led by another F3 Nation member. This has proven to be one of the most powerful parts of any workout, anywhere • I’d like to encourage Nantans and all PAX members of F3 Nation to watch these three 2-3-minute video clips (8 minutes total) The first is about this Charlotte F3 MIP workout, the second is about another weekly workout we do called “Fortitude” at the local homeless shelter and the third is a 2 minute segment WRAL-TV in Raleigh did recently on the MIP-type program they do in that city. https://youtu.be/lBDnRhoZI7w https://youtu.be/-gmaBmW8zRM https://www.wral.com/news/local/video/18045112/

On March 6, 2019, WRAL TechWire held its first TechWire Live event of 2019. Wells Fargo sponsors the event series, and this was the first of four subject matters scheduled for 2019. The content centered around leadership and the itinerary divided the night into two sessions. The first session took a macro look at how effective leaders move the ball forward in their communities. The second session took a micro look at how to make the most significant impact within each person’s own organization. James Amato, the Strategy and Business Development manager of WRAL TechWire, hosted the event to a packed house. The crowd at WRAL-TV’s historic Studio A was comprised of community leaders, CEO’s, serial entrepreneurs, and industry thought leaders. The audience gathered to discuss ways to realize their leadership potential in an increasingly divisive environment fully. This episode of Tech on Tap is an edited recording from the second-panel discussion of the night featuring Katie Gailes, of Wake Tech Community College, as the moderator. Gailes titled her panel discussion: Leadership in the new era, the high tech blessing, and the high tech curse. With that title as the road map, Gailes was joined by Gary Greene and Chris Weatherly, of Greene Resources and WRAL digital solutions respectively. Greene Resources is a high profile recruiting firm that seeks to help companies locate and land high caliber talent. Gary Greene leads Greene Resources as founder and CEO and spoke on his view of leadership and how he engages his employees for long term partnership and mutual benefit. "Leadership is not a position. Leadership is action," Greene said in response to the definition of leadership. WRAL Digital Solutions is an Emmy award-winning subsidiary of Capitol Broadcasting Company and operates to provide effective marketing solutions for local and national brands. Chris Weatherly leads his growing team as the Director of Digital Sales and Operations. Weatherly spoke on how to help leaders get their message across in an ever-evolving technological environment. Both men spoke on how to identify and develop leaders within your organization and took audience questions on how to respond to the changing workforce. Listen to the recording of the first panel, featuring Jesica Averhart (Leadership Triangle), Brenda Berg (Best NC), and Eric Boduch (Pendo). https://www.wraltechwire.com/2019/03/19/tech-on-tap-techwire-live-leadership-in-review/ Listen to Tech on Tap and look out for the announcement of the next TechWire live event, sponsored by TechWire partner, Well Fargo.

The U.S. Senate Part 2 of 3 Parts Part II of Biographical Conversations begins with Helms discussing some of the issues he discussed on his Viewpoints show at WRAL-TV. Host John Bason asks about his views on desegregation, in particular, to which Helms responds that he feels desegregation should have been encouraged and modeled rather than enacted by law. While he disagreed with the terms of our involvement in the Vietnam War, he stood by the soldiers who fought and expresses repulsion against many of the protests.
