Frank Murphy is joined by opera singer David Crawford, who is also teaching and coaching opera students at the University of Tennessee. David says that the music chose him because he has the type of voice that can sing opera and fill a 4,000 seat theater without a microphone.  Frank's parents went to operas and Broadway shows. Frank and his wife saw a notice on the Roku screensaver to click and watch the musical Heathers. He was confused by the character Veronica and was waiting for the mean girls who say “fetch” and sing “Santa Baby.” When the mean Heathers came into the cafeteria, he realized his mistake.  David recommends watching Shrek the Musical starring Sutton Foster. David's daughter has been in several local productions, taking after her parents. David's wife is actress Laura Beth Wells.  Frank was driving behind a school bus on Middlebrook Pike and was surprised when the bus stopped in front of Food City. Two kids got out and walked to cars in the Food City parking lot.  Frank and his wife Jere buy gift cards at the supermarket to get extra gas points. They pass the nozzle to fill both cars on the same discount. They were supposed to meet at the gas station. Frank's GPS said he would get there two minutes before the gas station closed at 10:00 p.m. Shortly after he pulled up alongside Jere's car, the gas station attendant turned out the lights at 9:58 p.m.  David and his daughter Lily went to the library shortly before closing. Lily asked the librarians for recommendations as the staff was starting to turn out the lights.  Frank and his wife used to make back-to-back appointments at the optometrist. When Frank called to make appointments, he was told the doctor had a new policy prohibiting family members from having adjacent appointments. Frank is convinced that he is the cause for the new policy. David thinks that Frank and Jere might need to have their eyes dilated.  Frank accidentally spilled rubbing alcohol on his leg while cleaning Jere's Fitbit. He assumed it would evaporate but he should have washed it off. The next day he had a rash from the chemical burn caused by the alcohol. It was almost as bad as the time he went to the bathroom after chopping jalapeno peppers.  David is wearing a Darth Vader t-shirt. Frank mentions the meme comparing Darth Vader without his helmet to Billy Joel playing a harmonica. Frank often looks for Billy Joel news to mention on 104.9 LakeFM.  This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Frank Murphy is joined by opera singer David Crawford, who is also teaching and coaching opera students at the University of Tennessee.  Frank tells David about Taylor Swift's cover of “September.” She sings “Do you remember the 28th night of September.” Earth, Wind & Fire sing about the 21st of September, which is nine months before Frank's birthday.  Frank enjoyed watching David in the Metropolitan Opera production of Rigoletto, set in Rat-Pack era Las Vegas. David wore a custom-made jacket. HBO's Behind the Candelabra also wanted the fabric.  David played Angelotti in Marble City Opera's production of Tosca. Marble City Opera's upcoming shows are Heartbreak Express, The Infinite Energy of Ada Lovelace, and Susannah.  David has a full-time job as a lecturer and coach in vocal performance at UT. He hints about an appearance in an opera this season.  Frank has a theory that WCBS-FM in New York plays extra Billy Joel songs because he is local to the area. He also thinks that other classic hits stations around the country base their playlists on the Joel-heavy playlist of WCBS.  Frank and his wife Jere went to a late dinner at a restaurant with a popular bar. They thought they heard a terrible karaoke singer but it turned out to be an entertainer playing his keyboard and singing Billy Joel and Elton John songs. David likes to sing “Baby Got Back” when doing karaoke.  David likes watching Emmanuel the Emu on YouTube. The videos originally appeared on TikTok. Frank thinks he gets more than enough emu on YouTube because of Liberty Mutual's commercials.  Frank associates LMU with Lincoln Memorial University. Their team name is the Railsplitters and their mascot is Abe, as in Lincoln. The team name at David's high school was the Fighting Quakers, which was changed to the Hustling Quakers. His college's team was the Battling Bishops. He then went to a university with a team named the Terriers.  Frank's theory is that team mascots should be predators like the Hawks but not the Doves. David suggests a team named the Vultures. David saw a dove with a smaller bird in its talons.  Frank was the emcee for the Sweet Goodness Donut Challenge at the Tennessee Valley Fair. There seemed to be an unusually large number of volunteers eager to help with the doughnuts. He thought he was being recognized by a viewer or listener but it turned out to be his backyard neighbor.  Several teenagers have started cutting through Frank's yard from the neighboring subdivision. A homeowner from the other subdivision came up the hill to ask if they were Frank's kids because they also cut through his yard.  This episode is sponsored by The Middleburg Barn at Fox Chase Farm. Frank Murphy is joined by Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. Frank bought rechargeable batteries at the suggestion of Erik Dobell. He got some no-name batteries that came in a plain wrapper from Amazon.  Frank, his wife Jere, and Dr. Frank Jr. PhD went to the Dexter Cider Mill in Michigan. They bought some McIntosh apples, ginger snap cookie mix, apple cider doughnuts, fresh cider, and hard cider. The doughnuts are made with apple cider syrup. The taste reminded Frank and Jere of Crutchley Crullers, which used to be sold in the Hamptons.  Frank and Dr. Frank Jr. PhD opened two different flavors of hard cider but were surprised how much was in the bottle. Frank brought back two 500ml bottles of hard cider to share with Kathryn. They will drink the traditional hard cider today and save the bourbon barrel cider for another day.  Frank and Jere bought new vitamin organizers for the trip. His friend Kumi urged him to take vitamin C, vitamin D, melatonin, and zinc every day. Frank got concerned because he forgot to take his nightly vitamins and zinc one night. He got a scratchy throat the next day but now thinks it was an allergy to mold.  Frank also takes some immunity boosting gummies each day. Water leaked into the container with his Airborne and elderberry gummies, partly dissolving them. Kathryn accurately guessed that Frank drank the melted gummies.  Speaking of gummies, Jere bought some “Michi-gummies” as a gift for the Rocket Brothers. Kathryn thinks the Michigan-shaped gummies look like slightly misfored animal shapes. Kathryn and her husband James once went apple-picking in Michigan.  There were picnic tables overlooking the Huron River behind the cider mill. There were a lot of wasps trying to get to the cider and doughnuts. Frank ate his doughnut while standing on a picnic table to be near the huge kitchen exhaust fan. The exhaust blew the wasps away from Frank.  Frank arranged to meet his friend Bean at a Cracker Barrel halfway between Crossville and Knoxville. Frank told the hostess that he was there to meet a tall guy. When Bean walked in, she asked if he was there to meet the short guy.  Bean has been doing his podcast from his wife's bathroom. Frank wonders why he didn't use his own bathroom.  Frank has an idea for fake Airpods. They would allow you to ignore people because you're pretending to be listening to something important.  Kathryn and her husband had an encounter with a woman at Jason's Deli who accused James of stealing her free ice cream. Kathryn saw her again a few days later at the church where Opéra Louisiane has its offices.  This episode is sponsored by Audible. Frank Murphy is joined by comedian and author Alex Stokes. Alex is known as “The Beer Comedian.” His Waking Up in a Brewery podcast can be found at https://www.facebook.com/wakingupinabrewery or through his website, https://www.beercomedian.com/  Alex has written several books including Messing with Tourists: Stupid Answers to Stupid Questions. He got much of the material while working in a ticket booth on the Gatlinburg strip. He finished writing a third installment of the book series but his laptop crashed and he had to rewrite the whole book from scratch.  When Alex visited colleges with his son, he stopped at breweries along the way to book future comedy gigs. Frank suggests that Alex check out the breweries near Ann Arbor, Michigan, where Frank Jr. recently completed his PhD.  One of Alex's sponsors is the Tennessee Cider Company, where Frank and Kathryn Frady recorded the See More Smokies Insider Edition episode found here: https://youtu.be/MqC_MeNJno8  Frank, his wife Jere, and Dr. Frank Jr. visited the Dexter Cider Mill in Michigan. They bought a jar of maple syrup as a gift for the neighbor who watched their house. Alex thinks it looks like bourbon. Frank also bought some hard ciders to have when Kathryn Frady visits.  Jere bought a Graeter's Ice Cream gift card to get extra gas points at the supermarket. They had planned to stop at the Graeter's in downtown Cincinnati but decided to avoid traffic by continuing on to the Graeter's in downtown Lexington instead. When they got to Lexington, they got stuck in traffic headed to Rupp Arena for a country music concert.  Alex would go to a brewery to write his books, rather than stay home and get distracted. Alex and Chris Travis have so far recorded Waking Up in a Brewery at 28 of the 32 breweries in Knoxville. Alex and Chris have started their own version of bar trivia called “Waking Up In A Brewery Presents: This Beer Tastes Funny!”  Frank and several others were tagged in a Facebook memory by a former co-worker. When Frank looked at the list of the other former colleagues who were tagged, he discovered that one of them had unfriended him.  On Saturday, October 8, 2022, Waking Up in a Brewery will host the Bruce Street Brewfest in Sevierville. Frank Murphy is joined by opera singer and executive Kathryn Frady. Kathryn says she remembered how to sit up straight on camera and was complimented for it when doing another video interview.  Frank made a YouTube short of Kathryn singing at Moonshine Mountain Coaster. His friend Bean used the audio during the intro of an episode of the podcast A Cup of Tea and a Chat. He also made shorts with video clips of Jeff Detrow and Nate Evans.  Kathryn was mentioned on the podcast Quitters Never Give Up. They played a clip of Kathryn's story about the man who showed up at her office to tell her that he wrote her an angry email but didn't send it.  One of Kathryn's employees at Opéra Louisiane admitted to “stalking” her online before Kathryn was hired. She discovered that Kathryn was “fabulous.”  Kathryn staged an opera performance of Bon Appetit paired with Leonard Bernstein's The Four Recipes in Baton Rouge last week. The libretto comes from an episode of The French Chef, starring Julia Child.  Frank used to watch The French Chef when he was young. His sister once baked a Bacardi Rum Cake that was photographed for magazine ads and a recipe card. Frank met Julia Child when he booked her for an interview on KLOS-FM. Frank and his wife saw Julia Child's kitchen in a museum.  Kathryn Frady, Whitney Wells, and Kayla Beard will sing in a concert called Stalactites, Sopranos, and Stilettos on Sunday, September 18, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. inside Historic Cherokee Caverns. They will sing some opera arias and some musical theater songs. Tickets are $15 and are on sale at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets  Frank points out that Kathryn is half-British and has dual citizenship. King Charles III declared September 19 to be a bank holiday because of Queen Elizabeth's funeral. Since banks are closed and school is canceled in England, Frank thinks Kathryn should be obligated to cancel the Marble City Opera board meeting that day.  Kathryn has an apartment in downtown Baton Rouge. The building has a rooftop pool. Her dog Sasha is becoming a city dog when living in Baton Rouge.  Kathryn enjoys eating gulf fish like yellowtail and redfish. Her new favorite restaurant is Cecelia Creole Bistro, which serves boudin balls. The restaurant also serves Sazerac Rye. Frank texted Kathryn when he had a Sazerac in Michigan last week.  Kathryn has a full schedule of performances and events in Knoxville, Santa Fe, Baton Rouge, and Huntsville.  Sign up for a 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep. Frank Murphy is joined by comedian and author Alex Stokes. Alex is known as “The Beer Comedian.” His “Waking Up in a Brewery” podcast can be found at https://www.facebook.com/wakingupinabrewery or through his website, https://www.beercomedian.com/  Frank got a little sunburned and a little bit of a sugar rush while recording a video at the Tennessee Valley Fair. The video will be on YouTube later this week. It includes “Nana's Gooey Butter Funnel Cake” and an appearance by Fairest of the Fair Katelyn Fedrick.  Alex credits Frank with getting him booked for a clean comedy gig at First Night Knoxville. Alex didn't have clean material at the time and had to write a new act.  Frank read that comedians can make a living by doing a clean act at the “three Cs” - corporate, college, and cruise gigs. Some comedians would rather work blue so they can shock the audience into submission.  Alex Stokes went into comedy full-time around the same time that his wife Jenny went to school to become a veterinarian for zoo animals. Her favorite animals are tigers. Frank went to a photo shoot with two live tigers and radio hosts Mark & Brian.  Frank performed in an improv show with Einstein Simplified at Creepy Con. He went backstage 30 minutes before showtime and felt out of place as the only person not wearing a costume. In the show, Frank had to play an expert on the movie Beetlejuice, which he has only seen once.  Alex found it challenging to improvise when he was pulled onstage for a bit with Einstein Simplified. He is used to preparing his jokes in advance. Alex says some stand-up comics hate improv. Frank knew a Vegas comedian who hated improv and prop comics.  Frank says improvisers prepare for their shows by learning the rules of improv. They avoid denials and questions, for example. They have to listen, accept, and support their scene partner.  Alex tells about the value of having an opening act to warm up and help gauge the crowd. Dive bar gigs are hard when the crowd isn't expecting comedy. One time another comedian got in a fistfight with an audience member right as Alex was about to go on. As Alex started, someone shouted out a reaction to the breaking news on the TV over Alex's head.  Frank asks Alex if he is sad to hear someone famous died. Frank says he isn't said to hear they died, he is sad that they actually died.  This episode is sponsored by The Middleburg Barn at Fox Chase Farm. Frank Murphy is joined by Elyssa Hurley of MEDIC Regional Blood Center as he donates platelets via apheresis. Frank's platelets are more valuable to MEDIC than his unpopular whole blood type.  MEDIC often has incentive gifts for donors, such as Dollywood tickets or Tennessee Valley Fair tickets. Learn more at https://medicblood.org  Frank once saw a blood splatter demonstration at the National Forensic Academy in Oak Ridge. They used expired human blood from MEDIC.  There is a photo of Alex Grappin on the wall at MEDIC. Frank knows the Grappin family. Alex was a Boy of the Year for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Alex's dad Tony is a frequent blood donor.  Elyssa was deferred from donating blood due to low iron. That also happened to Frank once. He was told to go eat a burger and come back the next day. Frank ate a bison burger before coming to MEDIC.  When Frank donates whole blood, he drinks a lot of extra fluids and is often finished in less time than other donors at the blood drive.  While in college, Frank signed up for a blood drive. While waiting for his appointment, he went for a ride in a military helicopter that was visiting the college campus. The helicopter didn't have seats. The riders sat on the floor and strapped themselves to the wall. The back door of the copter stayed open during the flight. Upon landing, Frank was deferred from donating blood because his heart rate and blood pressure were too high.  When Frank worked for radio stations that sponsored blood drives, he would donate while working. He would often donate at the same time as TV news anchors and they would all post about it on social media.  Frank asks Elyssa about the pint of Sea Salt Caramel Blue Bell Ice Cream that he once received as a thank-you gift for donating blood. The flavor is not available in stores but can be found at some ice cream parlors, including D & B's Hot Dogs and Ice Cream in Solway.  Frank was warned that he might get cold during apheresis. He brought along a Frank & Friends Show beach towel to use as a blanket but didn't need it.  Elyssa's parents moved to Tennessee from New York just before she was born. Frank says that makes her a Tennessee native but Elyssa's mom says that she doesn't have Tennessee blood in her veins.  Elyssa likes to visit the desert. She went to New Mexico and was surprised how cold it was when she went night swimming at her hotel. She wants to visit the Pacific northwest. She wants to visit the Grand Canyon. Frank tells her about his trip to Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and Washington.  Elyssa is interested in visiting Mount St. Helens. Frank looks online to see that Mount Rainier is also a volcano. Elyssa mentions the supervolcano under Yellowstone National Park. Frank says the supervolcano is included in the SkyFly: Soar America ride at The Island in Pigeon Forge.  Elyssa is beginning a masters program in historic preservation and museum management. Frank asks if she has heard of the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Silver Spring, Maryland.  Elyssa tells Frank about writing a research paper discussing if Franklin Delano Roosevelt had polio or Guillain-Barré syndrome. Frank talks about the original goal of the March of Dimes was to eradicate polio. That's part of the reason FDR is pictured on the dime. March of Dimes has since pivoted to help premature babies.  Sign up for a 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep. Frank Murphy's friend Jeff Detrow is today's co-host. Jeff says Frank has an “higo problem.” Higo is the Spanish word for fig.  Frank and his wife Jere haven't had time to make jam or preserves with all the figs Frank has harvested. They started freezing figs on a cookie sheet to be processed later. Jeff is reminded of the dog meatballs that he prepares for his pets.  Frank wants to use the frozen figs to make smoothies. Jeff calls it the new açaí. Frank mentions that figs have a laxative effect. Jeff asks about the transitory time.  Jeff learned about transitory time after accidentally swallowing a dental crown. He once lost a crown during a radio interview with a celebrity but found it on the studio floor.  Frank appreciates that Jeff has a big vocabulary. Like Frank, Jeff solves the New York Times crossword puzzle daily. Frank recently solved a Monday puzzle in four minutes and 31 seconds. He and Jeff compare solve times for the weekend puzzles. Frank tends to overdo his hobbies and interests, which has been called “Franking it to eleven.”  Jeff thinks that Frank's improv experience helps him think quickly while solving the crossword and vice versa. Frank credits improv with helping him in many aspects of life.  Come to the Secret City Improv Festival on September 30 and October 1, 2022 at the Historic Grove Theater in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Use the discount code FRANK at checkout for 25% off when purchasing tickets at https://secretcityimprovfest.com/tickets  Frank and his wife Jere went to the Irish Fest on the Hill in mid-August. Frank was the only one in his group who was interested in eating Irish food. They encountered their friend Ida who now lives downtown and could list dozens of restaurant recommendations within walking distance. They walked to the Old City and decided to try a restaurant called Southern Grit, which Jeff has also enjoyed.  The host said there would be a 45 minute wait for a table and that the group should go take a walk until they got a text that their table was ready. Frank ordered medium-hot chicken rather than the full Nashville-hot. The waiter said he could bring Frank some emergency milk if necessary.  The next day Frank, Jere, and their houseguests went to First Watch for brunch. Frank sensed that a lady at the next table was looking at their food so Frank explained to her what he, Jere, and the others had ordered.  Jeff jokes that leftovers should be up for grabs at pizza restaurants. Frank and Jere have driven to Maryville to eat at Jaboni's, which is not far from where Jeff and Kristen live. Frank wanted to support a Facebook friend, Bart Fricks, who bought the Maryville location of Jaboni's from the previous owner.  Frank also wanted to support Dan Goss, who left Downtown Grill & Brewery to open Point b in West Knoxville, near Gettysvue Country Club. Frank, Jere, and Artie Rocket ordered the s'mores board for dessert. Jeff recommends making s'mores with marshmallows that have chocolate filling. Point B had a variety of candy bars to make the s'mores.  Jeff wonders if Frank can expound on any topic. Frank says there is an improv game in which someone delivers an extemporaneous monologue on a word that the audience suggests. Frank once went to an improv festival in Frederick, Maryland and was asked to give a monologue on a word. He then appeared in a scene based on the monologue.  Frank points out that Jeff would improvise and speak extemporaneously on the radio. A late-night talk show has a huge staff to write a ten-minute monologue. Radio hosts have to fill four hours a day without a staff of writers.  Jeff's birthday is October 1. Each year, Jeff told his Jeff & Jer Show listeners to say “Happy birthday Jeff” to get free admission to the San Diego Zoo on October 2 even though it was actually Founders Day and everyone got in free that day.  One time Jeff & Jer announc that their staff member Randy was going to jump a bus in the Jack Murphy Stadium parking lot. People imagined an Evel Knievel style stunt. Instead Randy used jumper cables to jump start the bus.  Support the Frank & Friends Show by purchasing some of our high-quality merchandise at https://frank-friends-show.creator-spring.com  Sign up for a 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep. Frank Murphy interviews Russell Hitchcock of the band Air Supply on today's episode. Air Supply will perform at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center in Greeneville, Tennessee on Sunday, August 28, 2022. Any remaining tickets can be purchased at https://www.npacgreeneville.com/events/airsupply Air Supply's website is https://airsupplymusic.com  Air Supply will soon release a new single called “Be Tough.” They recorded it in a new Los Angeles studio that houses musical instruments and mixing boards used by members of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles.  Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell met on May 12, 1975, which was the first day of rehearsals for a production of Jesus Christ Superstar in Sydney, Australia. Frank asks Russell which tenor roles he portrayed. Russell started in the chorus and became an understudy for Jesus, Judas, and Annas. He played Judas several times but played Jesus only once. The producer thought he had the wrong hair for the role.  Frank has seen Air Supply in concert three times. They had a sold-out show at the Tennessee Valley Fair on September 5, 2014. They performed at the Children's Miracle Network Celebration on April 2, 2007.  In 1995, Frank met with Russell and Graham to ask them to perform at a KROQ Singles Party for “losers” on Valentine's Day at an Elks Lodge in Santa Ana, California. Jimmy Kimmel arranged for a terrible comedian to be their opening act. The audience was also treated to macaroni and cheese, served buffet style.  Russell's favorite Air Supply song is “All Out of Love,” which has become their anthem. “Lost in Love” is his second favorite.  Support the Frank & Friends Show by purchasing some of our high-quality merchandise at https://frank-friends-show.creator-spring.com  Sign up for a 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep. Frank Murphy's friend Kristen Detrow is today's co-host. Frank's friend Bean complimented Kristen's previous appearance on the show.  Subscriber Rena' recently adopted some rescue tortoises. She graciously sent a photo and video. Kristen's daughter wanted a pet tortoise that she could name Mr. Sweatpants. Zoo Knoxville is known for its successful tortoise habitat. “Big Al”' the Aldabra tortoise follows us on Twitter and posts tortoise jokes on Tuesdays.  Kristen smuggled a baby snapping turtle into her college dorm room but eventually had to let it go back into the wild. Frank's family had pet ducklings which they let loose in the Bronx River when they became ducks.  Frank is worried that he came across too strong the last time Kristen and her husband Jeff visited. He gave them a fig plant for their yard. Frank sent Kristen the Facebook invitation for an event called the “Fig Frolic” in Ooltewah on September 17.  Attendees are supposed to bring a fig plant to the Fig Frolic for a white elephant exchange. To reserve free tickets, Frank had to answer a questionnaire about his level of fig expertise. He chose “intermediate.” Frank is hoping to get a Violette de Bordeaux fig tree in the white elephant exchange.  Frank can't figure out why his Brown Turkey fig trees are producing fruits of very different shapes, sizes, and colors. While picking figs this morning, a limb broke off in Frank's hand. When that happens, he buries his mistakes. He cut the limb into about 15 cuttings and planted them in case one or two take root. Frank currently has 28 fig trees growing in his yard.  Kristen and Jeff are about to become empty-nesters when their daughter goes to college. Frank and his wife Jere have been empty-nesters for several years. They like it when Jere's sister and her husband come to visit.  Frank asks if Kristen has any hobbies and is thrilled to learn that both Kristen and Jeff enjoy crossword puzzles. Kristen says she's addicted to TikTok. They like to binge watch Jeopardy! by letting episodes accumulate on their DVR. Kristen has bad luck with plants but wants to do better. She puts googly eyes on her plants.  When Jere's sister and her husband arrived for a visit they needed to fill their gas tank before going out to dinner. Jere suggested they all go to the supermarket to get discounted gas. They took three cars in order to share the discount. Frank realized they were wasting some of their discounted gas when they then took all three cars to Culver's for dinner.  Frank likes the ButterBurgers at Culver's so much that he started buttering his buns at home too. He plans to cook bison burgers with buttered buns when he goes glamping with the twins at Smoky Hollow Outdoor Resort in Sevierville. The twins are his cousins-once-removed Megan & Erin, who are singer-songwriters in Nashville.  When they got to Culver's, a young boy asked Frank to sit with him and his mother. The boy said his name was Gianni and that he was four-years-old. Gianni's mom talked on her phone the entire time. Frank thinks Gianni may have thought that Frank was alone and needed a friend. Jere thinks that Gianni may have thought Frank looked like Santa.  This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Frank Murphy's friend Jody Collins is today's co-host. He is the graphic designer who created the Frank & Friends Show logo. Jody's design company is Feral Giant and can be found online at https://feralgiant.com/  When designing the F&FS logo, picked up on a Vegas in the Smokies theme. Jody enjoys seeing the logo on a beach towel. Frank paid for an extra file of the logo with enough pixels to use on the merchandise.  Frank will soon appear as a guest on Jody's Ramblin' Man podcast. Jody asked if Frank was okay with an open-ended conversation. When they recorded it, Frank stayed for five hours until Jody ushered him out.  Frank asks if Jody is often asked to do his work for free. Similarly, Frank is asked to emcee events for free. Jody has been on thirty non-profit boards. Frank wonders if he can get Jody to replace him on the Marble City Opera board but Kathryn Frady claims to want Frank on the board for life. Board members are expected to make a monetary donation to the charity.  Jody likes to smoke cigars with his guy friends. He says it's forced relaxation with conversation. Frank rarely relaxes and has very few guy friends.  Frank used to think that cleaning the pool was relaxing like a zen garden. Recent rain storms made cleaning the pool more difficult. Frank's wife Jere doesn't want him using the 16½ foot aluminum pole to clean the pool during thunderstorms.  Jody loves sweets. His friends know of his love for Oreos. Frank is known for his love of Marshmallow Peeps. They both receive lots of memes and other links about their favorite treats from their friends.  Jody has tried many novelty flavors of Oreos. Frank asks what Jody thinks of pumpkin spice Oreos. Frank would rather have a pumpkin-pie flavored treat instead of a pumpkin-spice flavored treat.  Jody thinks Pop Rocks Oreos are a bad idea. There was a false rumor about Mikey from the Life cereal commercials dying from eating Pop Rocks. Frank and his classmates knew the rumor was false because the actor who played Mikey went to the same grammar school and they saw him everyday.  Frank wonders how Jody feels about Oreo-flavored things like ice cream and how he feels about deep-fried Oreos. Jody likes deep-fried Oreos but didn't like deep-fried banana pudding.  In 2011, Frank recorded a YouTube video about deep-fried banana pudding at the Tennessee Valley Fair which you can watch here: https://youtu.be/Kw1xI6f52cI  Jody asks if Frank remembers the Oreo Big Stuf. It's not the same as the Oreo cakester which is more like a cream-filled snack cake.  Jody learned about Carvel Ice Cream from listening to a Kevin Smith podcast. Frank's father used to tell him about the original Carvel store on the site where Tom Carvel's ice cream truck broke down. Frank once saw Tom Carvel in person at an ice-cream eating contest in Tuckahoe, New York.  Frank thinks that the molds for Carvel's Fudgie the Whale and Cookie-Puss would be used for different designs by rotating the mold before decorating. Frank likes salted-caramel Blue Bell ice cream.  Jody made Oreo lasagna. The recipe is online. It consists of layers of crushed cookies and cream cheese. Frank tells Jody about the Elvis “hot dog” that is really a banana with peanut butter, marshmallow sauce, and chocolate syrup.  Frank asks if Jody has heard the famous Casey Kasem outtakes. Jody tells Frank about a recording of Paul Anka losing his temper and shouting, “The guys get shirts!” Frank sent the Casey Kasem blooper to a comedian friend whose dog had died.  This episode is sponsored by The Middleburg Barn at Fox Chase Farm. Frank Murphy's friend Kathryn Frady is today's co-host. Kathryn is headed back to Baton Rouge for her duties with Opéra Louisiane. Jody Collins will co-host the next episode of the Frank & Friends Show and Frank will appear as a guest on Jody's Ramblin' Man podcast.  Frank got AirPods for his birthday and is afraid of losing them. One pops out of his ear when he bends over while doing yard work. There is an AirPods case for sale in our merch store.  Frank missed a call from his daughter. He called back at an inopportune time because his two-year-old granddaughter was fussing. When she heard that pop-pa was on the phone, she stopped crying.  Artie Rocket usually visits during June. Next year Frank wants him to visit during August. That way he can be on a swim team in June and July and help Frank harvest figs in August.  Frank is wearing the last of the ten shirts he bought at an estate sale. The shirt belonged to Cecil Edward Mannis, father of Eddie Mannis. Most of the shirts were blue or red. One was yellow. Frank's friend Jeff Detrow made a good joke about one of the red shirts. He said a Bob Evans restaurant was missing its table cloth.  Kathryn asks if Frank ever wears black. He did when they appeared on East Tennessee PBS during pledge breaks in the Brit Floyd: Space & Time - Live in Amsterdam broadcast.  Frank and Kathryn went to a screening of Marble City Opera's production of Tosca at Central Cinema. Kathryn played the title role. Frank and Kathryn introduced each act of the opera. Kathryn took a photo of herself and Frank on the big screen.  Frank gave Kristen and Jeff Detrow a fig plant. They sent him a photo of the plant in their yard. Frank called it his “grand-fig.” Kathryn suggests that Frank set up a stand in his yard to sell fig cuttings and fresh figs.  Frank has been president of two non-profit boards. He recently turned down a request that he volunteer to be on a fund-raising committee. When he had a salaried job, it was easier to donate time to charities. Now that he is in the gig economy, he needs to get paid for his time.  Frank did agree to emcee Marble City Opera's fundraiser for free. He is on the Marble City Opera board. Kathryn jokes she is going to rewrite the by-laws to make Frank a board member for life.  Most of Frank's friends are women. Kathryn was glad that he had some male co-hosts over the past two months including Tim Coleman and Frank Rosamond. Kathryn asks if Frank will have to adjust the camera when Jody Collins is here. Jody's graphic design company is called Feral Giant.  Frank's friend Bean suggested that Frank start a spin-off podcast about figs and Kathryn agrees. You can occasionally buy fresh figs at Publix in Knoxville. Frank says many places in the Hamptons sell fresh figs. Kathryn says Frank's figs are flavorful.  Kathryn likes being able to conduct meetings on Zoom. Frank gets frustrated by people who have too much background noise and those who forget to unmute their microphone on Zoom calls.  Frank and Bean broadcast live from the top floor of the Washington Monument during Hands Across America on May 25, 1986.  Frank ran out of cherry Luden's throat drops. He has some licorice flavored Luden's which could be a bad surprise if he gave one to someone who was coughing in church or at a concert.  This episode is sponsored by The Middleburg Barn at Fox Chase Farm. Frank Murphy's friend Kathryn Frady is today's co-host. Kathryn has been traveling to South Carolina and Louisiana for her opera career.  A man showed up at an opera venue to tell Kathryn he wrote an angry email to her but decided not to send it. Frank got an anonymous complaint on the Titanic video.  After starring in The Copper Queen in Knoxville, Kathryn went to Baton Rouge in time for Opéra Louisiane's production of Tales of Hoffman. She is the new General Director of the company. On opening day, Kathryn was interviewed on live TV at 8:30 a.m. Then she and her husband moved some of her stuff into their apartment.  Frank thinks that Kathryn has a “tell.” He says her foot moves when she is uncomfortable or stressed. He noticed it at a board meeting and when he interviewed her on TV. A compliment from Kathryn's husband gave Frank some extra confidence to accept the offer of the interview show.  After the stressful meeting, Frank gave Kathryn a hug. She was glad he did. Frank explained the situation to a man who didn't seem to understand how the discussion at the meeting had become personal instead of professional.  Kathryn has been experiencing déjà vu. Her husband thinks she may need to get it checked. She directed three performances of Carmen in Myrtle Beach. After one of the shows, she walked around a corner and got déjà vu when she saw the singer playing Micaëla. She also got  déjà vu when she was on a beach vacation with her family. Frank suggests Kathryn should create an opera about déjà vu.  Frank may help one of the participating high school teams prepare for the Secret City Improv Festival on September 30 and October 1, 2022. Frank Murphy's friend Avi McCullah is today's co-host. Avi worked on-air at Jewelry Television and ShopNBC, where she sold high-end men's watches.  Avi bought her shirt at T.J. Maxx on the way to the podcast. Frank saw an article titled “The TJ Maxx where Amber Heard was spotted shopping is actually a celebrity hot spot — and a Hamptons secret gem.”  Avi will visit T.J. Maxx when she is traveling. Frank admits doing the same thing at Kohl's. It's easier to find orange clothing outside of Knoxville. Avi has purchased orange jewelry out of town. Frank says that UT orange (PMS 151) helps you blend in like camouflage in East Tennessee.  Avi left the tags on the shirt in case she decides not to keep it. Frank tried on shirts at a grocery store with a clothing department and started to sweat when his size was too tight. At other stores, the same size might be too loose.  Frank broke a chair onstage by bouncing on it during an Einstein Simplified show. Audience member Heather took a picture at the moment that Frank realized the seat of the chair had cracked.  As a kid Frank disliked posing for photos. A local bank had a promotion offering families a chance to pose for a portrait in the bank's lobby. Frank got upset at how he looked. His discomfort was visible in the photo. He stormed off and walked two miles home rather than ride with his parents and sisters.  Avi was allowed to play outside unsupervised until sundown. In Frank's childhood neighborhood, one of the moms would ring a bell when it was time for her kids to come home. Other moms told their kids to come home when the streetlights came on.  Avi and her mom enjoy visiting museums in Washington, DC. Frank goes to the DC suburbs so often that it doesn't occur to him to go downtown. Avi also likes playing tourist in Knoxville. She has several favorite restaurants.  Avi likes to go to Curious Dog Hotdogs & Sandwiches in downtown Knoxville. Frank thought the spicy mustard and sauerkraut dog at D & B's Hot Dogs and Ice Cream reminded him of New York. Avi says Brazilians put mashed potatoes and potato sticks on their hot dogs. Prior to moving to Knoxville, Frank would not have known to put coleslaw on a barbeque sandwich.  Frank only wants to eat Peruvian chicken when he's in the DC area. He would rather find a local restaurant than a national chain. He likes to eat at Three Li'l Pigs Barbeque in Daleville, Virginia, when traveling along I-81. Avi likes supporting local businesses and their entrepreneurial spirit.  When Frank and his wife Jere went out to dinner before going to see Bright Star in Morristown. They ordered veal parmesan at The Little Dutch Restaurant, which has been there since 1939.  Avi recommends that Frank and Jere make an excursion to Chattanooga. She goes there often to visit the “medieval barber,” the guy she is dating.  Avi suggests Frank take a Myers–Briggs personality test online. Her type is found in only 1.7% of women. Frank gets paralysis by analysis when trying to think up a new password for a website.  This episode is sponsored by The Middleburg Barn at Fox Chase Farm. Frank Murphy's friend Avi McCullah is today's co-host. Avi worked on-air at Jewelry Television and ShopNBC, where she sold high-end men's watches. She would fly from Knoxville to Minnesota to appear on ShopNBC.  Frank's figs are in season. He has been harvesting about 60 figs per day this week. He accidentally broke off a branch of a fig tree and is trying to ripen the figs from that branch by placing it in water.  Avi has lied to her sons about figs. She told them that natural fig bars are called “pop tarts.” When they ask for a pop tart, they get a fig bar.  Figs are inverted flowers. Frank says the taste and texture of his Brown Turkey figs remind him of oatmeal with brown sugar.  Frank brought 24 figs to a meeting of a non-profit organization. As the chairperson was trying to start the meeting, another man started telling Frank about the laxative effects of figs, which is something Frank appreciates.  Avi is dating someone who told her, “Let thy food be thy medicine.” Frank asks if she is dating a medieval barber. Avi asks if you can make fig jam or preserves without sugar.  The fig jam recipe Frank and his wife Jere use calls for 3 cups of mashed figs, 3 cups of sugar, and two small boxes of lemon Jell-O.  Avi asks if you can make fruit leather with figs. Fruit leather is like a natural fruit roll-up. The concept is similar to soft beef jerky. Frank watched an Adam Ragusea video about making beef jerky.  Avi wants to learn old methods of food preservation. Frank says that canning fig preserves is easier than he feared. You can vacuum seal the mason jars by putting them in boiling water for a certain amount of time.  The topic of canning reminds Frank of an episode of Visiting with Huell Howser in which Huell and cameraman Louie Fuerte visit a tuna cannery. Frank recalls Huell being amazed that they cook the tuna in the can. The episode is on YouTube: https://youtu.be/cxuzj-k-XuU  When Avi uses the word schniblet, Frank says it's the secret word and that they should get an extra $100 between them. As a kid, he used to stay up late to watch Groucho Marx on reruns of You Bet Your Life.  Avi says she gets self-conscious on camera. Frank once needed to find a co-host for a project called SMOMOTV and he asked Avi. They recorded a show in an extra room at a brochure printing plant between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Avi taught Frank to buy a cheap bronzer but an expensive makeup brush.  Avi says the medieval barber doesn't have prepared foods in his pantry. Frank mentions that there is a sales tax holiday in Tennessee during August on some food products that could be called staples or ingredients. Prepared food items and candy are not included.  Avi says that snack foods in England have fewer ingredients than the same products in the United States. She is trying to be aware of the ingredients in her food now that she has turned 40.  This episode is sponsored by Audible Premium Plus. Frank Murphy's friend Jeff Detrow is today's co-host. Jeff had a long and successful radio career in San Diego on KFMB, KKLQ, and KYXY. The Jeff & Jer Showgram was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2016. https://www.radiohalloffame.com/the-jeff-jer-showgram  Jeff points out that Frank's red gingham shirt is another one purchased at an estate sale. It's one of ten shirts that belonged to the father of Eddie Mannis. Jeff pretends to use a Frank & Friends Show beach towel as a shirt, prompting Frank to make sure there is a wraparound logo shirt available in the online merch store.  Frank has several boxes of his dad's Kodak slides. He promised his sisters he would digitize the images. Frank finally bought a mid-range slide scanner after a period of indecisiveness known as “paralysis by analysis.” Frank signed up for another Google account in order to store the photos online and use their automatic photo retouching.  Frank watched YouTube reviews to help him decide which scanner to buy. Jeff is amazed by the high number of product reviews on Amazon. Frank says the gold standard of Amazon product reviews used to be those written about the Hutzler Banana Slicer. https://www.amazon.com/Hutzler-571-Banana-Slicer/product-reviews/B0047E0EII  Frank and his wife Jere drove Artie Rocket home to Northern Virginia and then stayed for three nights at a cheap motel nearby. The lobby was closed, causing Frank and Jere to go to the motel next door to check in and get their key. The motel's promotional photos differed from reality. The pool was closed. The free breakfast had been discontinued. There were cigarette burns on the bathroom sink. Frank removed some hair from the shower drain before realizing it wasn't his or Jere's hair.  Jeff thinks the shower drain story was gross. Frank follows up with the story of how “Jere the Brave” got her nickname. Frank and Jere were staying at a different cheap motel directly across the street from their most recent visit. Jere solved a toilet problem by using the straw from a Super Big Gulp.  Jeff reads some reviews of bad hotels on Yelp. One room had no cold water and a clogged sink. Frank Murphy's friend Kristen Detrow is today's co-host. When she lived in California, Kristen called herself Kris. Frank is wearing another shirt he bought at the estate sale at Prestige Tuxedo. The shirts belonged to the late father of Eddie Mannis. Kristen loves to shop at estate sales.  Frank jokes that he should have a yard sale to sell copies of the book he's trying to write. He started writing his memoirs after losing a radio job but stopped when he started a podcast. Tim Coleman urged Frank to finish the book. Kristen says she will be Frank's accountability partner.  Kristen offers to call Frank at 4:00 in the morning. Frank says 4:00 is the worst hour. It's bad for people who stay up late and for people who get up early. Kristen's husband Jeff did morning radio for 35 years. She says he would show up at 6:05 for a show that started at 6:00.  Frank tells how he and his coworkers at KROQ would notice that Rick Dees prerecorded the first 90 minutes of his show on KIIS. They had tapes of Rick reacting to earthquakes of various intensity.  Frank missed a few Southern California earthquakes because he was traveling when they struck. A lucky leprechaun figurine on the fireplace was the only thing in Frank's house that broke during the 1994 Northridge earthquake.  Frank and his wife Jere visited Historic Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary. They saw displays of prisoners' weapons and items smuggled into the prison. Townspeople could get their laundry done at the prison for free.  Kristen and her husband took their daughter Mia to Brushy Mountain. They took a guided tour given by a former prisoner named George who did time for blowing up a country club when attempting to break into the safe. Kristen had to translate George's thick accent for Mia.  Frank likes regional accents. In East Tennessee, people flatten the long I sound. Kristen and Frank compare California accents.  One Sunday, Frank and Jere visited their friend Fr. Michael Woods in Fairfield Glade. After Mass, Frank and Jere went to Buc-ee's in Crossville to get brisket sandwiches. Kristen and her husband Jeff have been to that Buc-ee's and to one near Calhoun, Georgia. Kristen likes to get pecan chicken salad at Buc-ee's.  Frank says Buc-ee's was a convenience store but Kristen says it's more than that. Buc-ee's seems to sell their own version of things like Beaver Nuggets instead of cheese puffs or caramel corn. They had free samples of Beaver Nuggets. They sell many kinds of Buc-ee's merchandise including clothing from head to toe. Frank thought it was silly that they sell no-show socks. Frank Murphy is joined by Eden Carnes, who designed wigs and face paint for an upcoming production of Cats by the Primary Players Children's Theater Group. The performances will be January 13 to 15, 2023 at the Clayton Center for Arts on the campus of Maryville College. Learn more at https://primaryplayers.com/  Eden recently completed high school and beauty school. She devised a method of building wigs with synthetic hair in a fraction of the time it takes to make traditional wigs with yak hair.  Four cast members came along in wigs and make-up.  Eoin Faller as Bill Bailey Zee Carnes as Admetus Tristan Hall as Munkustrap Gianna Lombardo as Etcetera  Eden first met Frank at an improv workshop in Pigeon Forge. Frank thought he went there to take the class but ended up as the assistant instructor. Frank was surprised when Eden was in the cast of The Nutcracker in Oak Ridge and was a contestant on East Tennessee PBS Scholars' Bowl. Frank once interviewed Eden when she received a congressional medal for community service.  Eden plans to attend school for naval architecture and marine engineering on Long Island, New York. Frank surmises that Eden wants to be close to the theaters on Broadway.  Frank urges Eden to avoid watching Love Never Dies, the sequel to Phantom of the Opera. In it, the Phantom has moved to Coney Island and tricks Christine into coming to New York.  Tristan sings an excerpt of “The Old Gumbie Cat.” Frank thinks he resembles Peter Criss of KISS. Frank's friend Kristen Detrow wants to see a photo of Eden putting cat make-up on Frank. Kristen responded, “Rawr.”  Frank was once an honorary Hogette. The Hogettes were super-fans of the offensive line of the Washington Redskins in the 1980s.  Support the Frank & Friends Show by purchasing some of our high-quality merchandise at https://frank-friends-show.creator-spring.com  Sign up for a 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep. Frank Murphy's friend Erik Dobell is co-hosting today's episode. Erik is a mentalist. His show, Impossibilities - Magic, Mind-Reading, and Mayhem! is in the Iris Theater at the Gatlinburg Space Needle. Get tickets at https://www.impossibilitiesshow.com  Erik has a friend who pays to subscribe to pizza-making videos online. Frank prefers to watch Adam Ragusea for free on YouTube. Frank's interview with Adam Ragusea will air on East Tennessee PBS on Tuesday night (actually Wednesday, July 27) at midnight.  Erik has a Carl Sagan pin on his jacket. Many people cannot recognize Sagan. Eric also has a pin for members of the International Brotherhood of Magicians.  Erik is wearing a t-shirt that Frank bought for the movie Fish Bait. Frank was wearing the shirt when his character was eaten by a giant catfish. Members of Einstein Simplified starred in Fish Bait as the fishing buddies who end up at Fear Hollow Marina. They improvised their lines. The movie is available free with ads on Tubi. https://tubitv.com/movies/638830/fish-bait  In an episode of The Office, Michael Scott takes an improv class but does all the things improvisers are trained not to do. In real life, Steve Carell is an excellent improviser. There are some improv games designed to break one of the improv rules such as the game “Questions Only.”  The Secret City Improv Festival has a head-to-head tournament called the Slayden Cup, named after Bill Slayden, a founding member of Einstein Simplified. This year's festival will be September 30 and October 1, 2022.  Erik wonders why he got an empty folder for his high school diploma. Frank says that's normal. Most schools hold back the actual diplomas until after the ceremony to make sure everyone has met all requirements.  Erik wonders if his daughter will be interested in sports. Frank mentions that ballet is as intense as a sport. Frank played the old man in several Oak Ridge Civic Ballet Association performances.  When Frank passed the age at which his father died, his sister texted, “Congratulations. You win at breathing.” Frank's next goals are to outlive his paternal grandfather, his uncle, and his maternal grandfather. Frank likes to say that he wants to be buried so that he is exhumable.  Erik is from Elmira, New York. He met his wife when living in North Carolina. They moved to Gatlinburg because of his show. He is a mentalist. Mentalism is a branch of magic that involves mind-reading. The magicians who do elaborate stage shows are generally called illusionists.  Erik once worked as a mime. Frank agrees that pantomiming is difficult. Improvisers try to do realistic pantomime when holding imaginary objects.  The tv show Police Squad had hilarious ending scenes in which the actors would freeze but something in the scene kept moving. For example Leslie Nielsen was pouring coffee when the scene froze and the coffee cup overflowed. Frank loves the Police Squad theme.  Erik likes ‘80s cartoon themes. Frank used to watch reruns of The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends. Erik jokes that poor Rocky had a sad end.  Frank appeared in parody videos for MoonPie. He played a character named Chandler Skootch who was afraid space aliens would invade Earth to get more MoonPies. Frank Murphy's friend Erik Dobell is co-hosting today's episode. Erik is a mentalist. His show, Impossibilities - Magic, Mind-Reading, and Mayhem! is in the Iris Theater at the Gatlinburg Space Needle. Get tickets at https://www.impossibilitiesshow.com  Frank is wearing another shirt he bought at an estate sale. Erik jokes that Frank might get misidentified by the son of the man whose shirt Frank is wearing. Erik once mistook another woman for his wife. He also approached a stranger's car thinking it was his friend's car. Frank often gets approached by strangers.  Frank took notice of his wife Jere's receipt from Chick-fil-A. It had her full name and the make and color of her car in case she ever uses curbside pickup. Frank wondered what happens when Jere takes Frank's car to Chick-fil-A.  Frank and Jere took their grandson Artie Rocket to see Erik's magic show. Frank taught a mind-reading trick to Artie. Erik does a mind-reading trick in which he tells what wishes audience members wrote on slips of paper and placed in a fishbowl on stage.  Frank and his friend Victoria Henley recorded a See More Smokies episode at the Impossibilities show. Erik took Frank's wedding ring and connected it to another man's ring. Frank isn't 100% positive that he got the right ring back.  Frank upgraded his wedding ring on the day of the O.J. Simpson slow-speed chase, June 17, 1994. Erik's birthday is June 17.  Frank worked at KROQ at the time. They did live broadcasts from outside the courthouse on the first and last days of the O.J. trial. KROQ sent redacted versions of the Kevin & Bean Show to the courthouse as entertainment for the jurors. Some other Los Angeles stations sent redacted tapes of their shows too. Frank received a thank-you letter from Judge Lance Ito.  Frank, Jere, and Artie rode the Moonshine Mountain Coaster both before and after they saw Erik's magic show. When they rode in the afternoon, the manager Klaus urged them to come back for a night ride.  When Tennessee Shine Co. purchased and rebranded Moonshine Mountain Coaster, they hired Klaus away from Rocky Top Mountain Coaster and upgraded all the equipment. Frank and Erik wonder what upgrades may be coming to Ober Gatlinburg now that it has been purchased by some members of the Baker family, who created Ole Smoky Moonshine.  Frank's grandsons are adept at using Amazon Alexa to play specific songs they want to hear. Frank doesn't listen to music recreationally. He can't help but analyze the way radio stations or online streaming services arrange their playlists. He turns up the radio when the deejay starts talking.  Instead of using the Roku box to watch television, Artie used the Xfinity Flex box because the remote has voice-control. The Xfinity box came with free Peacock, which allows Frank and Jere to watch Girls5eva. Artie watched prank videos and science experiment videos on YouTube.  Frank has started using “Hey Siri” because his wife gave him AirPods for his birthday. He uses an Irish Female voice for Siri. He tells it to fast-forward or rewind 30 seconds when listening to podcasts.  As a prank, Erik will go into stores and command their Alexa to play a hardcore rap song. Alexa's “wake word” can be changed to “Computer” like on Star Trek: The Next Generation and some versions of Batman.  Frank's dad bought a red phone for their house in the 1970s. Frank recalls that a former KROQ employee named Ralph Garman bought a replica of the Shakespeare bust from the ‘60s Batman series.  Erik has a Kit-Cat Klock in the lobby of his theater. Erik says the clock is in horror movies. Frank thinks that just the tail of the clock will be visible during the opening and closing segments that he and Victoria Henley recorded for the upcoming See More Smokies episode.  This episode is sponsored by Audible Premium Plus. Frank Murphy's friend Becca James is today's co-host. Frank and Becca emceed the Karns Fairest of the Fair Pageant on Saturday. The pageant winners will appear at the Karns Community Fair this Saturday, July 16. They can also go on to compete at the Tennessee Valley Fair.  Becca is still asked to emcee events even though she is no longer on the radio. Frank points out that there are more emcee gigs than there are local deejays now that so many stations run syndicated shows or use voice-tracked deejays from other cities.  Frank loves the movie Drop Dead Gorgeous, which satirizes beauty pageants. The film is hard to find because of its politically incorrect humor. He thought it would be fun to emcee a pageant.  Frank learned that emceeing a pageant can be challenging because the contestant descriptions are often written in first person and must be transposed to third person. The Karns pageant has gotten better organized each year. It also goes more smoothly with a competent co-host.  Becca complimented the tuxedo Frank wore. He thanked Robin at Prestige Tuxedo for selecting the blue jacket with a black shawl collar that he wore. Robin also put Frank in a black vest to blend with the jacket.  On the day before the pageant, Frank went to pick up his suit at Prestige Tuxedo. They were holding a huge estate sale in the warehouse. The woman running the sale said her father had passed away. Frank later realized that the woman's brother is Eddie Mannis, owner of Prestige Cleaners and Prestige Tuxedo.  Frank bought ten shirts at the estate sale, including the yellow Brooks Brothers shirt he is wearing on today's episode. The shirts he bought ranged in price from $2 to $5. He spent $28 for ten shirts.  At the Karns pageant, Becca wore the same dress she wore when she won Dancing with the Knoxville Stars. Becca got the highest dance score and Kristin Farley won the fundraising competition. They both scored higher than Morgan Wallen and Glenn “Kane” Jacobs who also competed that year.  Frank's grandkids went to a big costume party during the Independence Day parade in Saugerties, New York. They have a deejay and announcers doing unofficial commentary on the parade. Frazier Smith used to do snarky Rose Parade commentary on the radio in Los Angeles while the parade was on television.  Guests at the parade costume party were told to dress as a character with their same first initial. Charlie Rocket wanted to be a Charizard Robot. He wore a gray shirt, gray shorts, and gray socks over his regular clothes.  Becca's twin boys are three and a half. They were playing in the front yard when one pulled down his pants and peed as a car drove by. Becca said to her husband, “Where were you? We were in man-to-man coverage!”  If Frank's grandsons have to go to the bathroom urgently while in the pool, they will jump out and go in the grass behind the fence. When they were at a park in Virginia, Frank had to help one find a secluded spot to pee.  Over the July 4th weekend, Frank's neighbors shot off a lot of fireworks. Frank heard the retorts and got up from the couch to look but missed the display. It was too humid to wait outside for the next round, so he returned to the couch only to jump up again when he heard fireworks. He missed the fireworks again and again two or three more times.  This episode is sponsored by The Middleburg Barn at Fox Chase Farm. Frank Murphy's friend Frank Rosamond is co-hosting today's episode. Frank plays the mayor in Encore Theatrical Company's production of Bright Star. He is the founder of Mondbiz Enterprises. He was previously the president of the Knoxville News Sentinel. He is the current chair of the Knoxville Opera board.  Remaining performances of Bright Star are July 15, and 16 at 7:30 p.m. and July 17 at 2:30 p.m. Call 423-318-8331 or visit https://etcplays.org for tickets.  Frank Rosamond was on Living East Tennessee to do a personality test of the show's hosts. It determines if you are people-oriented or task-oriented among other details.  Frank Rosamond was planning to rotate off the Knoxville Opera board when he was asked not only to stay on but to become the new chair. Frank Murphy compares it to his experience being elected president of the Front Page Foundation board.  Frank Rosamond describes how it was easier to get someone on the phone when he had the title of president of the newspaper. Frank Murphy can relate to the situation.  Frank Murphy has a friend who still uses a flip phone. She asked Frank to come over because her television audio was in Spanish and some other shows had the audio description for the blind.  Frank Murphy meant to offer Frank Rosamond some snacks like a fruit pouch or an Uncrustable. Rosamond isn't familiar with Uncrustables, which are frozen peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. You are supposed to let them thaw before eating them and are warned not to microwave them.  When Artie Rocket was visiting, he asked for some Diet Coke and Mentos. Frank only had some old cans of Diet Coke which did not produce as satisfying an explosion of fizz as a two-liter bottle does.  A friend of Frank's has pitched a show idea. The friend wants to have her daughter demonstrate the wigs and face paint she has designed for an upcoming production of Cats.  This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Frank Murphy's friend Tim Coleman is filling in for Kathryn Frady, who is working at Opéra Louisiane in Baton Rouge. Frank says Kathryn is now vindicated because she kept reminding Frank to invite Tim to fill in.  This episode is double-length and will be the only podcast episode released this week. Tim is here to promote his role as Daddy Murphy in Encore Theatrical Company's production of Bright Star. Performances are July 8, 9, 15, and 16 at 7:30 p.m. and July 10 and 17 at 2:30 p.m. The Friday, July 8 performance comes with the option for a BBQ dinner before the show. Call 423-318-8331 or visit https://etcplays.org for tickets.  Frank's next-door neighbor Nancy kept an eye on the pool while Frank was out of town. Her son enjoyed floating in the pool, which eased a backache. Tim's neighbor gave him a hot tub that Tim would have to move to his own house. They removed the railing from the neighbor's porch to get the tub into their truck.  Tim was on the Oktoberfest episode of the Frank & Friends Show. For years, Tim has worked as a singer at Ober Gatlinburg. Tim doesn't know what will happen this year. He says that Ober Gatlinburg has been sold to the family that owned Ole Smoky Moonshine.  Tim used to work in real estate, getting foreclosed homes ready for sale. He would put items on the lawn for neighbors to take for free. Someone once took his “Help Yourself” sign. He was surprised by the junk that people would take, including some filled soda bottles from the 1982 World's Fair. Frank mentions that Chris Ford of Sweet Pea's BBQ has a huge collection of 1982 World's  Fair memorabilia.  One of Tim's grandparents was a Pittman, as in the Town of Pittman Center and Gatlinburg-Pittman High School. Frank met Tim through the Gatlinburg Improv Fest. Tim says he misses the GIF. Frank suggests that Tim come to the Secret City Improv Festival at the Grove Theatre in Oak Ridge on September 30 and October 1, 2022. Tim remembers being in an improv jam with very experienced improvisers, Tara Ochs and Ian Covell from the Atlanta improv scene.  Frank recruited Tim to be a “ringer” in the Front Page Follies during the summer that Tim had retired from the cast of Sweet Fanny Adams Theatre. Tim unretired after one year away from Sweet Fanny Adams and stayed at the theatre until it went out of business. Tim would hide notes backstage with reminders for his scripted lines.  Frank didn't want to memorize lines for the Oak Ridge Civic Ballet Association's version of Into the Woods. Instead he described the action that he saw. He thought of himself as a play-by-play sportscaster explaining the plot. An audience member seated near Frank's wife Jere thought that Frank was lip-syncing to a recording of the narration. Jere explained that Frank really did sound like that.  Tim tells Frank to take his course on memorization. Tim says it's guaranteed to improve memory by 300%. Tim admits that when he first took the class and was walking out of the building, he couldn't remember where he had parked.  Tim says actors have two nightmares. One is going onstage in your underwear. The other is going on stage without knowing the script. Tim went to see a friend perform in The Odd Couple. The actor playing Murray the Cop had a medical emergency. Tim's friend said Tim could play the part with no preparation. They put a copy of the script on the poker table for Tim to read. He was asked to learn the script and finish the run as Murray.  The theatre company that produced The Odd Couple asked Tim to open a theatre in the Carousel Restaurant in Gatlinburg. across from Sweet Fanny Adams Theatre. Tim responded to an ad for a house to rent and the call was answered by Pat MacPherson, who with her husband Don, owned Sweet Fanny Adams Theatre. He wondered whether to tell her that he was opening a new theatre across the street. Pat eventually asked Tim to audition to be in the cast at Sweet Fanny Adams.  Tim is in the cast of Encore Theatrical Company's production of Bright Star, which was written by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. Another Bright Star cast member, Frank Rosamond, asked about promoting the musical on the Frank & Friends Show. Rosamond asked Tim about co-hosting the podcast. Tim thought the invitation was just a joke. Frank Rosamond is the former president of the Knoxville News Sentinel and is the current chair of the Knoxville Opera board.  Tim is very impressed by the caliber of the Bright Star cast. He gets caught up in the harmonies of the musical numbers during rehearsals. Tim won't reveal the plot twist in Bright Star. Tim likes to have butterflies in his stomach on opening nights. Frank recalls wearing a FitBit that showed his heart rate spiking before an improv performance but dropping to about 58 bpm once the show started. Tim empathizes with Kathryn Frady's sentiment that it's depressing when a show closes.  Frank will have more guest co-hosts in the weeks ahead including mentalist Erik Dobell and former radio deejay Becca James. Frank and Becca will co-host the Karns Fairest of the Fair Pageant on Saturday, July 9, 2022.  Tim emceed a Disney-themed event for the now-closed Creative Theater in Pigeon Forge. Frank knew an emcee who referred to an event going “off the rails.” Frank's theory of emceeing is to not take the train but to use a JetSki to cross the river instead.  Frank was a big fan of Steve Martin and memorized some of his early routines. Frank sat in the last row of a Steve Martin show at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.  Lulu Roman of Hee Haw came to a show at Sweet Fanny Adams Theatre. She was staying at a hotel in Gatlinburg but was being interrupted by fans. Tim invited her to stay in his guest room and she accepted. Lulu took Tim and his parents out to dinner at Huck Finn's Catfish in appreciation for his hospitality.  Here is the cast and production team of Encore Theatrical Company's production of Bright Star: Emma Andrews - Alice  Bo Choate - Jimmy Ray Jack Rosamond - Billy Kassandra Hazard - Margo Frank Rosamond - Mayor Andrew Alder - Daddy Cane Becky Collins - Lucy Danny Hacker - Darryl Kara Van Veghel - Mama Murphy Tim Coleman - Daddy Murphy Candace Moore - Dr. Norquist Jackson Collins - Stanford Brandon Meek - Station Master Raegan Faircloth - Spirit Woman Kayla Fielder - Spirit Woman Delyn Filer - Spirit Woman Hannah Nye - Edna Olivia Smith - Florence Dennis Elkins - Director Melanie Coffey - Stage Manager James Templin - Choreographer Laura Ritter - Music Director Sign up for a 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep. Frank Murphy's friend Mean Jean is filling in for Kathryn Frady, who is working at Opéra Louisiane in Baton Rouge.  Mean Jean's catchphrase on social media is AYYYYEEEE. Frank noticed that Jean added a ™ symbol as a joke. It's pronounced like the letter A stretched out, similar to Fonzie's catchphrase.  Frank and Mean Jean used to work at the same radio cluster. When Frank got a job on 104.9 LakeFM, he told his friend Steve to listen. Steve said the station played too much rap music, which confused Frank. It turns out that Steve was listening to Mean Jean's station, Hot 104.5.  Frank and Jean were chosen as “Leadership Champions” when they worked for The E.W. Scripps Company. Jean asks Frank to remember the five leadership principles from The Leadership Challenge by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner. Frank said they started with the letters MICEE and recited: Model the way  Inspire shared vision  Challenge the process  Enable others to act  Encourage the heart  The leadership class went on retreat to Camp Joy in the woods of Ohio. The camp is normally used for special needs kids. For an after-hours party, Jean brought along a jar of orange Ole Smoky Moonshine. The other people barely took a sip of moonshine but Mean Jean and Frank took a big swig because they knew that the ‘shine was 40 proof or less.  As Mean Jean arrived, Frank's wife Jere was leaving with their grandson Artie Rocket. Artie wanted to go to McDonald's but Jere surprised Artie by taking him to Chuck E. Cheese.  Artie loved the songs from Something Rotten! and memorized some of the lyrics. At least two of the songs mention body parts. Frank and Jere tried to get Artie to replace the bad words with something else before he goes home to his parents.  Mean Jean lives in downtown Knoxville. One Tuesday night, Jean surprised Frank after an Einstein Simplified improv show. He snuck up behind Frank and hugged him. Mean Jean has a new rule for house guests. They are only welcome Thursday night through Monday morning. The air-conditioning at Jean's apartment is broken.  Mean Jean went to a co-worker's wedding. Frank was once that same co-worker's Secret Santa. He ordered a box of Drake's Devil Dogs online as her gift. He also bought a box for himself.  Frank bought a pole saw at ALDI and used it on Father's Day. He cut some branches that were hanging over the fence and dropping seed pods into the pool. Jere was a little worried so Frank joked, “take a picture for the obituary.” Jere started to get her phone to take a picture.  Frank always hated yard work but has been getting it done nevertheless. He has two houseplants that he has kept alive since receiving them in a sympathy floral basket from the radio cluster when his mother died.  Frank had so many fig cuttings in the Spring that he planted some in the area that his wife told him not to use. Most of them died but two have taken root and started growing. He needs to transplant them before his wife notices.  An old man approached Frank in the church parking lot and warned him to never use his key-tag remote to lock the car. The man said that criminals would intercept the radio signal and open the car while the driver is away from the vehicle. Mean Jean says he will use his car remote when he leaves Frank's house.  Jean and his friends played a game on a road trip. Each passenger could pick one CD to play in the car. Only the person who picked the CD was allowed to skip a song.  This episode is sponsored by Audible Premium Plus. Sign up for a 30-day trial and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep. Frank Murphy's friend Laura Beth Wells is filling in for Kathryn Frady, who is out of town working at Opéra Louisiane. Laura Beth and her husband David Crawford like to say “Roadhouse” if someone loses their train of thought.  David is an opera singer. Frank appeared with David in the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra's Clayton Holiday Concerts in December, 2018. David likes to tease Frank whenever he hears a Billy Joel song on the radio.  Frank has a theory that radio stations around the country are influenced by the playlist of WCBS-FM in New York City, which might play extra Billy Joel songs because he is a New Yorker. Laura Beth likes Billy Joel music even though her husband does not.  David and Laura Beth heard several Billy Joel songs on a Queen-themed online station. Frank asks if she's seen the unflattering meme comparing a picture of Billy Joel to a photo of Darth Vader without his helmet.  Frank became an Elvis fan years after Elvis died. He produced a live radio broadcast from Graceland on the tenth anniversary of the death of Elvis. Frank and his wife Jere took their grandson Artie Rocket to D&B Hot Dogs to get a “Loaded Elvis Pocket” which was a banana in a hot dog bun with a layer of peanut butter and topped with marshmallow creme, chocolate syrup, and peanuts.  Laura Beth and David like to order a crispy-crust pizza from Little Nicky's New York Pizza, two doors down from the hot dog restaurant. Frank met the owners of Little Nicky's several years ago at an ex-New Yorkers meet-up where pizza and Drake's Cakes were served.  Laura Beth was in a commercial for Drake's Devil Dogs. Frank likes to buy a box of Devil Dogs when he is close enough to New York to find them. The commercial also featured a guy in a drake costume. A drake is a male duck.  Frank tells Laura Beth about visiting Parrot Mountain for an upcoming See More Smokies Insider Edition episode. Frank and Artie and Kathryn Frady each got to hold three birds. A cockatoo named Tydee wanted to stay on Frank's shoulder and lick the sweat off his forehead.  After recording two episodes in Pigeon Forge, Frank and Jere needed to take Artie someplace for dinner. They found long waits at The Old Mill Restaurant and at Downtown Flavortown. Laura Beth says the longest she will wait at a restaurant is half an hour. She was baffled by the long lines at the Shake Shack when she was performing on Broadway.  Frank remembered that Junction 35 Spirits has a restaurant attached to its distillery. Frank, Jere, and Artie were seated immediately and enjoyed a delicious dinner. The waiter left a serving pitcher of water on their table, which was extremely helpful.  Frank promised Artie they could roast Marshmallow Peeps after Jere cooked chicken on the smoker. Artie wanted to make s'mores but they didn't have any candy bars. Frank suggested he could try using chocolate syrup instead. The roasted Peeps have a caramelized sugar shell on the outside and softened marshmallow inside.  Laura Beth and her daughter Lily did a taste-test of flavored Marshmallow Peeps, including cinnamon flavor, which they liked. Frank has tried Peeps-flavored things including a Peeps-flavored Slurpee, which tasted terrible. Frank mentions that former news anchor Kristin Farley enjoys Peeps and posts photos of her favorites.  Frank saw an online ad for a broadcast of a newer production of Rigoletto set in 1920s Europe. The ad had an incorrect photo, showing a production of Rigoletto set in 1960s Las Vegas from season 40 of Great Performances. Laura Beth's husband David played Ceprano in the Vegas “rat pack” version.  This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Frank Murphy's friend Laura Beth Wells is filling in for Kathryn Frady, who is out of town working at Opéra Louisiane. Laura Beth recently starred in Always Patsy Cline at the Clarence Brown Theatre. Patsy became afraid of car rides after a crash in 1961. She started taking a small plane to gigs and died in a plane crash in 1963. Frank saw a microphone Patsy used at WINC radio in Winchester, Virginia.  Frank chatted with Laura Beth when they were both in the audience for the Tennessee Valley Players production of Something Rotten! at the Ula Love Doughty Carousel Theatre, next door to the Clarence Brown Theatre. The Carousel will soon be torn down and rebuilt.  Frank's cousin Terry Hatton was a legendary FDNY captain. Terry used to visit all the old theatres in Times Square to memorize their floor plans and exits. One time Terry swung from a rope high above Times Square to secure a billboard that was falling. The mayor made a joke about “Captain man-Hatton” being as good as Spider-Man.  Laura Beth played Emily Osborn in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark on Broadway. Laura describes the flying techniques in the show. She says it is still bad luck to whistle in a theatre because in the days before electronic headsets, stagehands would use whistles to signal when to raise or lower curtains and set pieces. If you whistle in a theatre, you could get hit with something from above.  Frank also saw Mary Costa at the production of Something Rotten! Mary is known for providing the voice of Aurora in the animated Sleeping Beauty. Frank and his family sat behind a ten-year-old girl and her family. Frank urged the family to go say hi to Mary Costa before the play started. Mary invited the girl to sit on her lap for a picture.  Frank and Laura Beth knew several people in the Something Rotten! cast, including Jessica Magers-Rankin, who played Bea. Laura Beth was in a cabaret-style show with Jessica. Frank recalls that he attended the show and met Laura Beth for the first time.  Frank once read an article about the short supply of men in community theatre. Laura Beth says the trope extends to high school theatre, with girls auditioning for the lead roles but the theatre teacher pulling a boy out of track & field practice to play the male lead.  Laura Beth liked the minimalist style of the Something Rotten! production. She said that they used simple boxes and chairs as sets in Shakespeare's day. Frank saw a production of Murder on the Orient Express at Theatre Knoxville Downtown that used benches to represent the parts of the train. Laura Beth knows the students who built the benches.  Frank and his wife took their grandson Artie to the Lavender Festival in Oak Ridge on Saturday. Frank had a conversation with someone from the Oak Ridge seed library. You take seeds to grow vegetables and then harvest your seeds to bring back to the library.  Frank says many of the festival attendees reminded him of people about five to ten years older than him and listened to rock music from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Frank missed out on that era of music because his parents listened to opera and classical music. They also listened to talk radio shows like Rambling with Gambling and The Arlene Francis Show on WOR-AM.  Laura Beth points out that her daughter can access music from all eras on Spotify. Frank's grandson is similar. Artie's playlist has classic rock songs, video game songs, and John Williams movie themes.  Laura Beth says the first play that “got hold of her” was Peter Pan. The title role is traditionally played by a woman. Frank and Laura Beth both had the soundtrack of the Peter Pan production starring Mary Martin. Laura Beth used to use the “Stepsisters' Lament” from Cinderella as her audition song.  This episode is sponsored by The Middleburg Barn at Fox Chase Farm. Frank Murphy and Kathryn Frady are joined for a few minutes by Frank's eldest grandson, Artie Rocket. Last summer, Artie appeared on several See More Smokies episodes of the Frank & Friends Show. Artie remembers being scared by a Bigfoot statue in Pigeon Forge. Artie wants to show the scapular he received as a First Communion gift.  Frank had a close call on the wooden deck in his backyard. When he stepped down from one level to the next, his foot broke through a board. Fortunately as he fell, he landed in a sitting position with his leg through the board.  Kathryn's parents have algae in their pool. Frank has been fighting algae with extra chlorine. Last year he tried algaecide but didn't like the suds created by the chemical. Frank switched to liquid chlorine when the price of chlorine tablets skyrocketed. He likes to open the jug underwater so it doesn't splash on his clothes.  When Frank was a kid, he and other kids had to step into a dishpan of liquid chlorine before getting into the kiddie pool at the club. The chemical killed athlete's foot fungus.  Kathryn says it seems like every time she calls her coworker Brandon Gibson, he is washing the dishes. Kathryn suggests listening to podcasts while doing the dishes.  Frank was moved to the afternoon shift on 104.9 Lake FM. He is now on from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Listen online at https://www.lakefm.com/  Frank's mother was in labor for 30 hours on the longest day of the year before giving birth to him. He likes to joke that Judy Garland ruined his birthday by dying.  Frank bought dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets, pool floats, and other treats for the kids at ALDI. As he approached the checkout line, the customer ahead of him asked, “Are you on PBS?” As Frank conversed with the customer, the ALDI cashier left her register to walk around and unload Frank's cart and ring up his purchases.  Later that day, Frank was buying produce at Kroger. A produce clerk asked if Frank was still on the radio and still doing improv on stage. Another customer overheard the conversation and approached Frank. The customer said that he's been told he has a great voice and should be on the radio. Frank agreed and offered to help him contact the local radio stations.  Kathryn is headed out of town to work at Opéra Louisiane and at Coastal Carolina University. She will be back for an August 3 screening of Marble City Opera's production of Tosca at Central Cinema. The video is hosted by Frank and Kathryn. Frank Murphy welcomes Kathryn Frady back from her vacation. Frank is concerned that they have 665 YouTube subscribers and he hopes they will get well past 667 subscribers quickly.  Frank enjoyed Kathryn's performance as Julia Lowell in Marble City Opera's production of The Copper Queen. You can rent a video stream of the opera at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets   Frank surprised Kathryn by giving her a congratulatory hug after opening night of The Copper Queen. Frank sat behind Mary Costa, an opera singer who was the voice of Aurora in Disney's Sleeping Beauty. Reviewer Alan Sherrod of Arts Knoxville called the show “operatic gold.”  Kathryn feels depressed when a show ends, especially when she is involved as both singer and producer. Kathryn just became the General Director of Opéra Louisiane in addition to her job at Marble City Opera. Frank has started lining up guest co-hosts for when Kathryn will be in Baton Rouge.  Frank used to buy 40 pounds of chlorine tablets for about $80. A problem at the factory caused a shortage and a price increase to about $200. Frank switched to liquid chlorine, which he could get for about $6 a gallon at Lowe's.  Frank and Jere took their grandsons Timmy and Charlie to Lowe's to buy chlorine using gift cards Frank bought at Kroger, which gave him bonus gas points. Lowe's could not complete the purchase because they said their gift card reader was down. They drove to another Lowe's but that store's gift card reader was down too. Frank then went to a nearby Home Depot and bought liquid chlorine for only $4.50 a gallon.  Marble City Opera is working on an opera about body-snatching. Grave robbers used to dig up bodies for use in medical research. Dr. Bill Bass started a collection of donated modern skeletons at the Body Farm.  Kathryn and her husband took a vacation to Santa Rosa Beach in Florida. Kathryn's brother and his family went surfing in the Gulf of Mexico. Frank's family used to go to ocean beaches on Long Island. Frank remembers the surf as being rough and uninviting.  Frank had hoped to come to an artist reception after the final performance of The Copper Queen. He had a paid comedy improv gig that night. Einstein Simplified was hired to perform at the reception after a renewal of vows ceremony. The brewery that was supposed to host the event canceled on the bride so they could show a Vols baseball game instead.  The improv gig was moved to the married couple's house in South Knoxville. Frank's maps app went haywire and told him to make a U-turn, which turned out to be incorrect. He drove up as the ceremony was underway on the front lawn.  This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Frank Murphy's wife Jere is filling in for Kathryn Frady. Frank and Jere are celebrating their wedding anniversary. Each year, they both try to be the first to say “Happy Flag Day” to the other.  Frank had a discount code from Amazon for $10 off an order that would be shipped to an Amazon Locker at Whole Foods. He tried to order HVAC filters but was told those were too large for a locker. Instead he bought two packages of bronzer.  Jere was away for three weeks. She brought two of their grandsons to Tennessee with her to stay for a week. When the two boys leave, their eldest grandson, Artie Rocket, will arrive for a two-week stay.  Frank thinks Jere didn't tell him about her plans for them to travel to Northern Virginia together when it's time to bring Artie home. There were several ideas proposed, including taking Artie to North Carolina while his dad was there on a business trip. Frank was happier about traveling when they decided to stay in a cheap hotel rather than with family. While the idea was being discussed, Jere went into the other room and made the hotel reservations.  Frank sent Jere a screenshot from The Deal Guy's latest video about ALDI. Frank thought they should get a fire safe for their documents and passports. Jere bought it as their anniversary gift to each other.  Jere reminisces about their “second honeymoon” on their tenth anniversary. At a silent auction at the National Press Club in DC, Frank's mom had purchased a stay at a condo resort on the island of Molokai. She offered it to Frank & Jere but then decided that she would like to go to Molokai with them. Frank's grandmother also decided to go, as did one of Frank's sisters and her husband and his mother. Frank got cheap airfare by purchasing unused seats on a charter flight.  There were complications with the return flight, resulting in an extended layover in Honolulu. Frank's grandmother said she wanted to see the hand of Fr. Damien De Veuster (now Saint Damien) which was on display in a series of Catholic parishes in Honolulu before it would be buried in Damien's original grave on Molokai. Frank used a payphone and a phone book to call at least five parishes in search of the hand. They ultimately saw the box that contained the hand on display at the cathedral.  This episode is sponsored by The Middleburg Barn at Fox Chase Farm. Frank Murphy offers Kathryn Frady a frozen wine slushie, once it thaws enough to pour. He bought the slushie mix during the first episode he recorded with Kathryn about a year ago. You can watch that episode here: https://youtu.be/qZDy2zWnEBw  It's still hot in the Podcast Ponderosa. The HVAC system will be replaced soon. Frank finds it difficult to use his phone for calls or podcasts while he is doing yard work. Frank's wife Jere will soon return with their grandchildren Timmy and Charlie. After a week, they will leave and Artie Rocket will arrive.  Frank bought a pole saw but hasn't used it yet. He has been digging up weeds and tending to his fig plants. While digging up rocks and roots, he made an unusual discovery. His shovel hit something about a foot deep.  After some effort, he excavated a rectangular bath mat or similar piece of carpet. He wonders why it was buried instead of being washed or thrown into the garbage. Kathryn is suspicious. Frank asked neighbor Nancy if anyone on their street had ever gone missing. Nancy thinks it might have been from a kids' clubhouse in the woods.  Frank threw away the rug. Kathryn thinks it should have been tested for evidence. Frank tells about the divorced couple who sold the house to him. Kathryn wants to turn this show into a murder podcast.  Frank serves the wine slushie in celebration of Kathryn's successful performances in The Copper Queen. If you missed it, you can still buy a streaming video ticket at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets  Kathryn did some drywall repair at her house. Frank didn't know she was so handy. He imagined her doing the work while she was sick at home. Frank tells Kathryn how he got a dirty look from half a block away for coughing on a street downtown.  When the grandchildren are visiting, Frank teaches them how to get out of the pool. Last year, Artie played a Wii dance video game in silence while Frank did his radio show from the kitchen. He wonders if he could ask neighbor Nancy to invite the kids to try out her son's new disc golf game in the yard.  Frank suggests that the kids could shoot baskets in the driveway. Kathryn thinks he will need to keep the door open to watch them in case the basketball rolls away. Frank thinks they will be fine.  Kathryn asks if Frank's kids had curfews when they were teenagers. Frank doesn't recall them ever wanting to stay out late. One time Frank Jr. had high school swim team practice on a Tuesday night at the same time as Frank's improv show and Jere's dress rehearsal with the Knoxville Choral Society. Frank asked another swim team dad to give Frank Jr. a ride after practice to Patrick Sullivan's Saloon in the Old City.  This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Frank Murphy and Kathryn Frady are dressed for the heat. The central air conditioning unit at Frank's house broke down on Memorial Day. His HVAC system is about 24 years old.  At first, Frank thought the house was warm because of the brighter sunlight since several trees were removed. Kathryn is sitting on an ice-pack to stay a little cooler. Frank left some bourbon on her side of the table.  Frank noticed poison ivy around the air conditioning unit. He decided to put on a long-sleeve shirt and remove it before the repairman arrived. After sweating through his clothes, he took a shower using dishwashing liquid to cut through any poison ivy oil.  The repairman needed to reset the emergency cut-off switch but could not find it at first. Eventually he located it under the screened porch. The repairman asked Frank to remove the spiderwebs under the porch.  The repairman said he would not touch the cut-off switch. He said it was a model that was pulled from the market in the 1980s because it was a fire hazard. Rather than only have the switch rewired, Frank decided to replace the HVAC system.  Marble City Opera will produce the stage premiere of The Copper Queen on June 2, 3, and 4. Frank Murphy's friend Azsha White is filling in for Kathryn Frady again today. Kathryn is rehearsing for The Copper Queen, which opens Thursday.  Azsha and her husband like to go camping at Watts Bar Lake. Coincidentally, a blood test said she has uranium in her blood. She recently had treatment for Lyme disease.  Frank's wife Jere received a gift bag from two students at the school where she works. The bag contains several Korean treats. It turns out that Azsha knows the kids who gave Jere the gift. Frank and Azsha go through the bag and sample the seaweed, crackers, and cookies.  Frank and Azsha both have been taking extra vitamins and zinc to boost their immunity. Frank heard on the news that people who received a smallpox vaccine as kids are probably safe from monkeypox. Frank and his sisters had chickenpox at the same time. He got a shingles vaccine a couple of years ago.  Frank was a mobile deejay while in college. Some of his gigs were at a girls school in Middleburg, Virginia and at the British Embassy in Washington, DC. The owner of the deejay firm heard Frank on the radio in 1982 and offered him the mobile deejay job. A few years later comedian Patton Oswalt worked for the same deejay company, which used cassettes instead of vinyl or CDs.  Frank was looking for a bag of salad at the supermarket but the salad had gone bad. He decided to get shredded taco lettuce instead. As Frank was searching for the bag with the latest “sell by” date, a produce clerk started talking to him about the salad that had gone bad. Later the clerk found Frank in the bakery section and showed him the salad bags he was going to throw in the trash.  When Frank got to the parking lot, a young woman started talking to him about his car. She had the same model of car and was parked next to Frank's car. Frank was surprised that she would strike up a conversation. They complimented each other's cars and compared similarities.  Marble City Opera will produce the stage premiere of The Copper Queen on June 2, 3, and 4. Frank Murphy's friend Azsha White is filling in for Kathryn Frady. Kathryn is rehearsing for her performances in The Copper Queen. Azsha is a voice-over actress and event host.  Azsha and her husband bought a house with a pool. She thought about getting rid of the pool but decided to make the needed repairs and improvements. Azsha and her husband live in New Market, which Frank says is a speed-trap town.  Azsha's father was a fan of the song “Aja” by Steely Dan, which inspired her name. Azsha and Frank met through the Knox Asian Festival.  Azsha and her pets are in commercials for PetSafe. She has two dogs and an orange tabby, which reminds Frank of the orange cat that he sees in the woods behind his house. Azsha is too young to have heard of Morris the Cat, the mascot of 9Lives commercials in the 1970s and ‘80s.  Frank wonders why he was too busy in 1982 to think about the World's Fair. He had just started working at a commercial radio station for the first time. Many of the songs that came out that summer still get airplay today. Frank sent Azsha a link to a World's Fair YouTube channel that is run by East Tennessee PBS. The link to the channel is https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVKLUZFuDFZ2sfNHXSmoUbg  Azsha hosted an event with the Knoxville Area Korean American Association at the Muse last week. Azsha wore a traditional Korean dress called a hanbok.  Frank and his friend Bruce went to brunch at Cracker Barrel on Sunday. Frank was told that the wait for a table would be an hour but several people must have left before being seated because the wait wasn't that long.  Two friends from church spotted Frank while he and Bruce were waiting for a table. They were a little bit away from the building to stand in the breeze. The people from church thought Frank's belly looked too big. Frank hoped it was because the wind had puffed out his shirt.  Frank and Azsha both like the hashbrown casserole at Cracker Barrel. Azsha likes their hot chocolate and Frank likes their lattes but not their regular coffee.  Azsha brought her pet axolotl to the Podcast Ponderosa. The axolotl is a type of salamander from Mexico. Azsha named her pet Tofu. He is an albino. She had brought Tofu to an aquarium store on the way to Frank's house. The store's staff told Azsha that Tofu is male.  Marble City Opera will produce the stage premiere of The Copper Queen on June 2, 3, and 4. Frank Murphy tells Kathryn Frady that today would have been his late father's birthday. A family friend arranged for a memorial Mass to be celebrated today. Kathryn suggests that Frank take a selfie while watching the Mass online.  Frank's interview with comedienne Leanne Morgan airs tonight at midnight on East Tennessee PBS. Kathryn may try to stay up and watch it. When Frank's PBS interview with Kathryn aired one year ago this week, she forgot to watch it.  Kathryn's Facebook account was hacked. Someone spent $500 through Facebook Pay. She discovered it when Facebook contacted her and asked if she added a new email address to her account. She had previously used Facebook Pay to make donations to charities. Kathryn's bank will refund the money from the fraudulent purchase.  Frank often gets notified that someone is trying to change his Facebook password. He has two-factor notification turned on. The hacker can't change the password without the code number that was sent to Frank.  Kathryn has been practicing her role in The Copper Queen. Frank is impressed that actors and singers can memorize lines. Kathryn has been singing as she does chores around the house. Her husband saw her and laughed. He thought that as she cleaned and sang opera, she looked like a little old Italian woman.  Frank's neighbor made an Italian Easter dessert called Pastiera Napoletana. It reminded Frank of a cross between a pie and a fruitcake. She brought Frank a slice of the Pastiera Napoletana and asked Frank if he wanted to try an experiment.  Kathryn and her husband often go to the drive-thru lane at a bagel shop. Lately the clerks have been asking if customers want to add a tip to their credit card purchase. Kathryn worries that she said “no” rudely. She also wonders who would get the tip if she had left one.  Frank was surprised to see a box turtle on the deck. He wonders how the turtle climbed up onto the deck. He recorded a video to show Kathryn. Could another animal have dropped the turtle onto the deck?  Frank's neighbor texted to say that she found a bat in her house. Her son used a t-shirt to catch the bat and then release it from an upper balcony. Frank's text response was “Holy batshirt!”  Frank set an alarm for 11:30 p.m. to watch the lunar eclipse last week. Kathryn and her husband watched it from their upper deck. Frank was aggravated that an article on the local newspaper's website gave the wrong time for the eclipse.  This episode is sponsored by The Middleburg Barn at Fox Chase Farm.
