It's Krisha & Frank! Enjoy East Tennessee stories from Krisha Brook and Frank Murphy, both broadcasters and both improvisers. http://www.KrishaAndFrank.com/
Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Becca James, the girl with two first names. They will taste-test the allegedly viral Dr Pepper Eggnog that Frank saw on Instagram. Knoxnews photographer Saul Young took photos at the City of Knoxville Christmas Tree lighting. Jody Collins and Sarah Roberto were among those photographed. One man was wearing a “Saul Young Appreciation Society” sweatshirt. Frank and Becca hosted the livestream of the Karns Christmas Parade on YouTube. A plumber modified a go-cart to look like he was driving a giant toilet. His staff gave away toilet paper, which some British people describe as “loo rolls.” Frank picked up some Milk Duds candy off the road for Becca. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Buy books and other merchandise autographed by Body Farm founder Dr. Bill Bass at https://bonezones.com/ including Body Farm t-shirts. Contact BoneZones to hire Frank to give a presentation about Dr. Bass and the Body Farm. Becca bakes Italian pizzelle cookies for Christmas and potato latkes for Hanukkah. Frank is not allowed to eat any of the cookies that his wife Jere has baked because they are to be used as gifts. However, Frank is allowed to eat the cookies that Jere received as gifts from her coworkers. Logan Murrell co-hosted episodes 0139 and 0146 of the Frank & Friends Show. Using the artist name “LAMB,” she recorded an album titled “Love, Mom” which is a love letter to her two children. Stream the album on Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/album/148Xa3COJwyEC37ePOXGYG?si=RwRuaoXpQbS9Jr_aV3Dl5g or on Apple Music at https://music.apple.com/us/album/love-mom/1773141328 Frank was deeply saddened to learn that Logan's two-and-a-half year old daughter Bobby Grace died of a rare disease last week. Frank went to the cemetery for the graveside service and listened to the “Love, Mom” album while waiting for the funeral procession to arrive. Frank called Jere to help him identify one of the other mourners who had waved at him. He gave Logan a “prayer bear” for her son. Frank saw a 15-second Instagram video titled “Viral Dr Pepper Eggnog” and immediately knew he had to try it. Fill a glass three-fourths of the way with ice cubes and Dr Pepper. Then add eggnog. Frank loves Weigel's eggnog. The drink tastes like an ice-cream float after the ice cream melted. Jere surprised Frank by giving Becca a plate of the cookies that Frank isn't allowed to eat. Frank explains that he likes ice with a hole in the middle because he thinks the impurities have been drained out. Dr. Frank Jr. PhD. says that is plausible because of the colligative properties. Becca got rid of her white car that she named “Blanca.” Frank is able to guess the name she gave her new blue car. Before the parade, they walked among the participants and posed for a photo with a horse. Kathryn directed a production of Hansel and Gretel and sang the role of the Mother for Wichita Grand Opera. The children in the chorus called her Aunt Kathryn. Kathryn and her brother drove from Houston to Dallas in his Tesla. She said the car drives itself better than her brother drives it. Contact BoneZones to hire Frank to give a presentation about Dr. Bass and the Body Farm. Kathryn heard a crashing sound during the night and wondered if there was a ghost in her house. She grabbed the closest items to use as weapons when she went downstairs to investigate. Frank wonders if there could have been an earthquake but Kathryn checked and found there was not one. Frank's friend Bean and his podcast partner Allie were talking about people who were afraid of missing a big earthquake. Frank was out of town and missed the biggest earthquakes that occurred during the time he lived in Burbank. At WAVA, Frank arranged for a staff member to fly to the New Madrid fault when an earthquake had been predicted. At KROQ, he arranged for a staff member to fly to Buffalo to yell through a bullhorn at the Bills' quarterback. Frank will perform six character voices in the Nativity Pageant of Knoxville on December 14, 15, and 16, 2024 at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. Admission is free but parking costs $5. Frank saw the actors who play the Centurion and Herod at the Rocky Hill Christmas Parade. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady, who brought some Marble City Opera hats to display. Use the code HOLIDAY to get 25% off on all types of Marble City Opera merchandise at https://www.marblecityopera.com/store Kathryn directed productions of Hansel and Gretel for Mobile Opera and Wichita Grand Opera. She also sang the role of the Mother in Wichita. Marble City Opera had a show in the Old City Performing Arts Center on the same night as a Vols football game at Neyland Stadium. Kathryn and Frank were relieved to find plenty of parking available in the Old City. Kathryn stayed at someone's condo in Wichita. As she was showering one morning, the shower started filling with water and a neighbor complained that the water was leaking into their condo. Frank Jr. PhD visited for Thanksgiving and wanted to watch “The Game” between Michigan and Ohio State. The audio on Frank Sr.'s over-the-air television box hasn't worked in over a year. Frank Jr. found a way to make it work despite the fact that Frank Sr. had hidden the remote control and couldn't find it. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Kathryn planned to have pork chops for Thanksgiving but she and her husband didn't feel like cooking so they went to Cracker Barrel. A few days later, Kathryn tried cooking the pork chops with poor results. Frank's friend Bean is neighbors with opera singer Lise Davidsen, who sang the role of Tosca at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Her final performance was broadcast live to movie theaters. Bean and his wife Donna watched it in London at the same time Frank and his wife Jere watched it in Knoxville. Frank is friends with a syndicated radio deejay named Jay Fox, “the Fox that Rocks.” They had spoken on the phone but not met in person until recently when Jay and his wife Regina vacationed in Sevierville and stopped by for a visit on their way home to Texas. A student on Scholars' Bowl named James Overall is the son of composer Jason Overall, who wrote the opera The Doctor and the Devils, which was produced by Marble City Opera. During player introductions, James claimed that his favorite podcast is the Frank & Friends Show. The team from Roane County High School made buttons with Frank's picture. A viewer sent a letter to East Tennessee PBS praising the Scholars' Bowl production. Frank and Becca James will host the YouTube livestream of the Karns Christmas Parade at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2024. You can watch at https://www.youtube.com/@karnsnetwork Frank and Heather Waliga will announce the Rocky Hill Christmas Parade at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at the Rocky Hill Center, 7513, S. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Becca James, who proudly wears her blue Frank & Friends Show hoodie. Frank and Becca received Visa gift cards as thank-you gifts after emceeing an event. Frank found that his card had been hacked and the money was spent. He was able to get reimbursed after the card company investigated. They received cards again after another event but Frank could not get it to work at a local retailer when he tried to buy eighteen gallons of chlorine. Eventually his wife Jere was able to spend all but $1 of it. Becca bought some clothes online even though she can't be sure if they will fit. Frank also wears a variety of sizes depending on the brand. Jere organizes the wardrobe that Frank wears on Tennessee Scholars' Bowl. The show's judges sang “You're So Vain” to Frank when he took a “wardrobe selfie.” This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Becca asks if she can bring her kids to trick-or-treat in Frank's subdivision. Frank went to the funeral for the father of a former co-worker named Sam. Another former co-worker named Joey Tack was at the funeral. Frank noticed that Joey was standing in the receiving line next to former television meteorologist Mike Witcher and made a big deal about introducing them to each other. When Becca's grandfather passed away, she spoke at the funeral but was surprised when the priest told her to speak before the Mass started. She introduced herself as Rebecca but the priest misheard her and confused her with another relative named Deborah. A woman asked Frank's daughter if she came from a political family or a media family. She asked because Frank's daughter is well-spoken. Frank Murphy is joined by singer-songwriter Logan Murrell, who has just released a new album titled Love, Mom under the artist name, LAMB. Find the album on Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/album/148Xa3COJwyEC37ePOXGYG?si=RwRuaoXpQbS9Jr_aV3Dl5g or on Apple Music at https://music.apple.com/us/album/love-mom/1773141328 Follow her on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/loganashleymurrellbrakefield/ Logan had wanted to marry someone whose last name started with B so that her full initials would become L.A.M.B. She does not like the taste of lamb meat, which reminds Frank of seeing a sheepdog demonstration in Ireland. She was inspired to write the lullaby “Sweetest Thing” when her toddler wouldn't go to sleep. That song led to the creation of the album. The song “Bobby and the Redbird” was inspired by a statue of a cardinal at a hotel in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Logan's father whistles on the album. Frank is reminded of a story his grandfather told about an old Irishman who told his enemy's widow that the dead man whistled well. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Contact BoneZones to hire Frank to give a presentation about Dr. Bass and the Body Farm. Frank tells Logan about memento mori, a Latin phrase that translates to "remember you must die" and shares some trivia about Abraham Lincoln's funeral procession. Logan likes to spoof a TV news voice. Frank tells her about Kayla Sullivan, a reporter in Indianapolis who creates comedic videos about her toddler in the style of a breaking news report on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/kaylamariesully/ Frank is amazed at how Logan and others seem to talk in song lyrics and how they are able to compose melodies. He tries to compare songwriting to writing a book or blog post. Frank struggles to read the music at church and admits to sometimes just moving his lips, like a background actor in a movie. Frank was a background actor twice, once in the movie It's Pat and another time in an episode of Love & War. He would like to add those credits to his IMDB page if he knew how. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3325558/ On her new album, Logan has a duet with Rob Crosby called “Welcome to the World.” She is using the stage name LAMB for the album Love, Mom, which is made for children to enjoy. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Whitney Wells of Marble City Opera, who flew in from Houston for work. Whitney had to pack light but was able to borrow a friend's clothes while in town, which gives Frank an idea for people to rent furnished rooms with wardrobe included. Frank's grandson Artie joined the drama club at his school and will play one of four Aladdins in their fifth and sixth grade play. When Frank was Artie's age, he wrote a scene for the Thanksgiving play and made himself the narrator. Frank was surprised when one of the students on Scholars' Bowl revealed some personal information about her health. Frank cracked some jokes in an effort to ease the awkwardness but he thinks his jokes will probably get edited out before the broadcast. Frank went to a bank to deposit a check into Marble City Opera's account. The teller was very talkative about her love of Halloween and Christmas candy. Frank noticed that she wore a pendant that looked like candy corn. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). When Frank has to pronounce difficult words on Scholars' Bowl, he looks for the word on Julien Miquel's YouTube channel, which can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/@YouTubeJulien Frank enjoys Julien's accent. Whitney usually gets a chai tea latte at Starbucks. This fall she has gotten it with pumpkin foam on top. Frank got an offer for bonus stars if he bought three Frappuccinos. He brought a roll of Press 'N Seal to the store to seal the drink and then drove to a different Starbucks to buy another of the drinks. Frank received a gift card from a restaurant called STIR. He and his wife Jere spent the whole card on a “Cold Bar Platter” that consists of a dozen oysters, steamed shrimp, and spicy tuna with crostini, cocktail sauce, and horseradish. They also ordered wedge salads, which were served with huge knives. Frank heard a story about a buried rug on his friend Bean's podcast, “A Cup of Tea and a Chat with Allie and Bean.” Frank once dug up a small rug in his yard, which he described on Episode 0056, which you can watch here: https://youtu.be/BG7b7PwJfEg?si=enEEh6N2FTJVAytO On their podcast, Bean and Allie played clips of Frank's stories and added their own hilarious comments. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. They will host the Fair Food Throwdown on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. and the Sweet Goodness Donut Challenge on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. Frank is distracted by the kinesthetic tape on Kathryn's arm. He recalls a time that she was disappointed when her tape was visible in a newspaper photograph. Someone recently asked her if it was a tattoo. Frank put some new items in the Frank & Friends Show merch store after he designed some merch for Marble City Opera, including pet shirts. Shop online at https://www.marblecityopera.com/store Frank took posters for the Cathedral concert to several libraries. He got stuck in traffic near the library in Sequoyah Hills. After sitting still for about half an hour, he realized he was stuck in a school pickup line. Frank buys a Knox County Schools coupon book every year but barely uses it. He did use a coupon to get free Oreo dust for his grandsons' ice cream cones at Cruze Farm. Kathryn says she hadn't previously noticed that Frank can be somewhat OCD. After the Marble City Opera concert at Cherokee Caverns, Frank was particular about giving Kathryn a poster from the middle of the pile. He used to only buy newspapers from the middle of the pile. His sisters once pranked him by cutting holes in his newspaper. Frank saw his neighbor's son at the supermarket but the guy didn't recognize Frank. A few moments later, Frank recognized the Dancing Blue Shirt Guy who was in a viral video recorded last year at a Vols football game. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Frank picked two Brown Turkey figs before they were fully ripe because some nocturnal animals have been taking figs, even if Frank had put the figs in lace drawstring bags. Frank saw a “Charlie Brown” fig plant at Lowe's and asked the cashier for a discount. Kathryn suggests that they take the camera to various locations she is considering for Marble City Opera. She also thinks there should be a reality show about the opera business. Jere's sister and her husband visited Knoxville over Labor Day weekend. They went to several nice restaurants including Lonesome Dove for lunch on Saturday and Aretha Frankenstein's for brunch on Sunday. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Dave Fennell. Frank and Dave used to improvise together as members of Einstein Simplified. The audio of the Frank & Friends Show is available on the website and smartphone app of FUN 105.9, where Frank is a deejay. On Fridays, he pays homage to one of his radio mentors by stretching out the phrase “it's Friday.” One of Dave's ancestors is John Tipton, who was a rival of John Sevier. Tipton was opposed to the State of Franklin. Frank recently wrote a question for Tennessee Scholars' Bowl about the State of Franklin. Dave is wearing a Hawaiian shirt that was a gift from his daughter. Frank buys neckties from the Ladies of Charity Thrift Store at 120 W. Baxter Avenue in Knoxville. Frank made plans to meet someone for coffee but forgot what the person looked like. He found the person's photo online. When the other guy arrived, he didn't eat or drink anything. Frank defends Circus Peanuts, saying they are like the marbits in Lucky Charms. Frank's grandson Artie bought instant oatmeal, which Frank mixes with hot coffee instead of water. Artie also likes older candies like Circus Peanuts and Necco Wafers. Frank and his wife had hotdogs for dinner recently but there was very little spicy brown mustard left. Frank tried a new technique to get the last of the mustard out of the container. During dessert, he spilled some custard on the kitchen counter. Last year, Frank met Ricky the Dragon Steamboat at the Fair Food Throwdown. Frank's television interview with Ricky aired recently on East Tennessee PBS. You can watch the interview online at https://www.pbs.org/video/up-close-with-ricky-the-dragon-steamboat-qiz67j/ Frank recorded an interview with Colleen Cruze of Cruze Farms. She got Frank to drink some buttermilk on the air. When Frank and Jere went to dinner at the Cruze Farm Pizza Barn with their grandchildren, an older gentleman complimented them on saying grace before their meal. Frank likes that he can still answer a call on his iPhone after it has gone to voicemail. He is irritated by police shows when the phone rings for an unusually long time before they answer. A recent survey claimed that iPhone users are more extroverted than Android users. You can watch the interview online at https://www.pbs.org/video/up-close-with-ricky-the-dragon-steamboat-qiz67j/ Marble City Opera had five performances in June. Frank's grandson Artie watched the dress rehearsal of Il Tabarro and both performances. The audience is left to wonder if Kathryn's character lives or dies at the end. She gave Frank a t-shirt with a list of “opera spoilers.” Kathryn and her husband James went to the Festival on the Fourth at World's Fair Park and met up with Frank, Jere, Artie, and Dr. Frank Jr. PhD. James noticed a bad odor but was able to find its source. The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra began their performance with the “The Star-Spangled Banner” and conductor Aram Demirjian invited the audience to sing along. Several people noticed Kathryn's high note. Frank and Jere took two of their grandchildren to the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge for a “Wonderful Wednesday” presentation by the Tri-M Music Honor Society at Oak Ridge High School. Jere informed Frank that she had been Tri-M president at her high school. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Kathryn and Jere bought CDs but neither of them have a CD player. Frank suggests trying to play them in a DVD player. Frank reminisces about playing records, tapes, and CDs at WAVA, where all the songs were sped up slightly to get the listeners hooked on the faster version. Frank and Jere took Artie to Mighty Musical Monday at the Tennessee Theatre. Frank misplaced his prescription sunglasses but eventually found them on top of a book titled Thinking Clearly by John-Mark Miravalle. A Waffle House waiter named Eric asked Frank to try Waffle House Sauce on his egg sandwich. When Frank liked it, Eric gave Frank extra packets to take home. Unfortunately Frank put the packets in his back pocket. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Mitch Moore, who is a freelance writer. Mitch likes to solve the Sunday and Monday crossword puzzles. Both he and Frank try to solve the Monday puzzle as fast as possible. Frank has broken the five-minute barrier but Mitch has yet to go “sub 5.” Mitch and his wife went to Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park. They spent several days at Yellowstone. Frank and his wife would like to go back and spend more than a day at Yellowstone. Frank and Jere visited Tom Kent, one of Frank's radio mentors, in Cleveland on the day after the eclipse in April. Tom died of cancer in June. On Tom's birthday in August, hundreds of his Facebook friends wished him a happy birthday, obviously unaware that he had died. Jere attempted to take two grandsons to McKay's used bookstore but it happened to be the same day as the store's anniversary. The store was overrun with fans trying to win prizes by driving to all five McKay's stores in North Carolina and Tennessee. Mitch points out that the store used to be known as McKay Books and that in the South, people tend to add an S to store names like Kroger, Walmart, and others. Mitch recently finished the first draft of a book. He set the book in rural Arkansas during the same time period that he was growing up there. Frank had a poster printed using the image of an East Tennessee PBS monthly program guide that included him among some actual celebrities. Every time Frank buys a package of 700 coffee filters, he wonders if he will be able to use them all. The Tennessee Valley Fair asked Frank and Becca James to emcee the Fair Food Throwdown on Saturday, September 7 and the Sweet Goodness Doughnut Challenge on Thursday, September 12, 2024. Frank used bonus points to get a free Frappuccino but rather than drink it, he saved it in the freezer. A couple of weeks later he bought a Frappuccino to earn 75 bonus points. He put it in the freezer to save it for another day and then realized the first one was still there. Frank's grandson Artie chastised him for not saying “excuse me” after a gastrointestinal outburst. Frank started saying “Pardon me boys, is that the Chattanooga Choo Choo” every time it happened again. Frank explained the reference, which made Artie want to watch The Glenn Miller Story starring James Stewart. Frank will be checking in the audience members at Marble City Opera's “Tenors, Tuxedos, and Stalactites” concert on Saturday, August 17, 2024. The gate opens at 4:00 p.m. and the one-hour concert starts at 5:00 p.m. Get tickets at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets before they sell out. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Whitney Wells, who is the social media coordinator for Marble City Opera. Find Whitney online at https://www.instagram.com/whitneywellssoprano/ Whitney is from Texas. She is in town to work as the assistant stage manager for Marble City Opera's production of il Tabarro. There will be a concert version of il Tabarro aboard the Star of Knoxville riverboat on Thursday, June 13, 2024. Use the code RIVERCRUISE to get a 30% discount when buying tickets at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets There will be fully staged productions of il Tabarro on Friday, June 21, 2024 at the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum in Vonore and on Sunday, June 23, 2024 at Melton Lake Park in Oak Ridge. The performances will take place alongside the lake at both locations. At the world premiere of The Doctor and the Devils, several opera patrons recognized Frank from the tv show Tennessee Scholars' Bowl, which is currently re-airing the most recent season on East Tennessee PBS. The composer of The Doctor and the Devils said that his son was recently a contestant on Scholars' Bowl. While she is in town, Whitney is staying with her friend who is the manager of Knoxville Princess Parties. Whitney is “best friends” with Cinderella and several other princesses. See photos at https://www.knoxprincessparties.com/ Whitney's husband Ben once played Prince Eric. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Contact BoneZones to hire Frank to give a presentation about Dr. Bass and the Body Farm. Frank asks Whitney if he is supposed to try to follow back private Instagram accounts or not. He decides against it because he already wastes too much time on Instagram looking at various s'mores recipes, including s'mores cookies, s'mores brownies, and s'mores dip. Frank finds thrifting videos on social media to be upsetting. When someone buys an item for pennies at a thrift store but then resells it for much more, Frank feels bad for the person who donated the item to the thrift store. Frank is wearing orange because the baseball Vols are one of eight teams in the College World Series. His favorite flower is an orange day-lily, which would bloom around Frank's birthday in New York but bloom a month earlier in Tennessee. Frank and his wife Jere intended to use a gift card at Arby's. Frank also had a two-dollar off coupon, which caused them to forget to use the gift card they had purchased at Kroger. Whitney likes a Texas grocery store called H-E-B. Whitney's parents grew up in Lake Jackson, Texas, site of the first Buc-ee's convenience store. They knew the owners of Buc-ee's. This week the new world's largest Buc-ee's opens in Luling, Texas. It is slightly larger than the former world's largest Buc-ee's in Sevierville, Tennessee. Frank ate a brisket and egg burrito but wished they sold Buc-ee's dental floss. Whitney met her husband Ben at a summer opera program in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. They put on three operas during the run of the summer festival. In one production of Cendrillon, Ben played Prince Charming and Whitney was one of Cinderella's ugly stepsisters. Frank's friend Bean was stumped by a crossword puzzle clue he saw on X. The clue was “‘90s alt-rock band named after an X-Files monster-of-the-week.” Bean sent the clue to Frank, who had to solve the whole crossword puzzle to figure out that the answer was EVE 6. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Logan Murrell, who is a singer and songwriter. Frank asks why Logan changed her Instagram handle to include the word vibes. Find Logan at https://www.instagram.com/loganmurrellvibes/ Frank went back to the pool supply store to have his pool water tested. He was surprised to learn he needed to add 12 pounds of chlorine that day and 8 pounds each subsequent day for a week. Logan discovers that she and Frank both claim 22 as their favorite number. Logan has a 22 tattoo and Frank's birthday is on June 22. Logan starred in her high school's production of Little Shop of Horrors. She would like to play Audrey again some day. Frank is surprised to learn that Logan had a small role in Salesky's production of La Boheme when she was 9. Frank says Logan has an aura about her that makes strangers approach her. Frank says strangers often approach him. Frank was at a gas station when a man felt compelled to tell him that he was speaking a foreign language on the phone with his nephew. Logan can use the strangers' stories as inspiration for a song. Frank can't figure out how Logan or anyone can write a melody. Logan offers to make a song out of Frank's story about birds in his garage. Frank has made up songs in improv shows, usually to the tune of an opera song. Logan and her husband have two children. She is working on an album of sentimental songs. She plays a sample of her song “Moon and Stars” on her guitar. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Mitch Moore, who is a freelance writer. Frank met someone named Duran who posts reaction videos on YouTube. Mitch suggests that Duran record his reaction to the Frank & Friends Show. Frank is wearing a shirt that he hasn't worn in a couple of years. A news anchor once told Frank that he doesn't tuck in his shirt behind the desk so that he can pull on the shirttails before going on-air. A member of a military honor guard suggested that Frank try using shirt garters. Mitch has an issue with graduation ceremonies for kindergarten or preschool. At the preschool graduation for Frank's grandkids, the students go down the slide in the playground when their name is called. Frank points out that “Dads & Grads” sales make sense in the North where graduations often coincide with Father's Day weekend. In the South we should have “Moms & Grads” but that doesn't rhyme. Find tickets and information at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets Frank's pool is so green that Mitch thinks he's still celebrating St. Patrick's Day. When Frank went to the pool supply store to buy algaecide, the clerk asked for his phone number. Instead of his real number, Frank said, “867-5309.” Mitch recently rewatched the movie Twister and wonders about the villain played by Cary Elwes. Mitch thinks the writers gave him a comeuppance more severe than he deserved. Frank was embarrassed at the Apple Store when his debit card was declined, even though he had put enough money in the account. Frank Murphy is joined by author Thomas D. Taylor, who can be found online at https://thomasdtaylor.wordpress.com/. Thomas and his wife Elyse Bruce adopted some former “hoarder house” cats. Thomas writes horror stories and offers to make Frank a victim in one of his stories. Elyse writes Missy Barrett mysteries. She invited Frank to read a chapter during the book launch for The Case of the Missing Muskets at the King Family Public Library. See photos at https://www.facebook.com/MissyBarrettFanPage Talking about horror stories reminds Frank of the time he and his sisters saw the movie Night of the Living Dead. Frank laughed at the movie but his sisters are still scarred by it. Thomas describes a scene in his book Hemlock in which someone falls victim to an alligator. When Frank was at the King Family Library, an employee named Launa told Frank that she had been a contestant on Tennessee Scholars' Bowl when she was in high school. When Frank asked for the name of Ebenezer Scrooge's dead business partner, Launa rang her buzzer and answered, “Bob Marley.” In 2008, Ken Jennings hosted an episode of Scholars' Bowl while he was visiting Knoxville on a publicity tour. The News Sentinel recorded a short interview with him that can be seen here: https://youtu.be/rpkTAAb6OrU?si=TqFfucpYTw3au3gq One of the kids at the library asked Frank if he was rich. Frank answered that he is not rich but he is happy. In Los Angeles, Frank worked with a highly-paid deejay who wrote a book that revealed how miserable he was while making a million dollars. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. As predicted on a previous episode, they enjoy a cider in their Frank & Friends Show pint glasses. Frank's picture is on page 66 of the April issue of VIP Knoxville magazine as part of its coverage of the Amadeus Chamber Ensemble's program of “French Opera Jewels.” Frank and Heather Waliga were photographed for the next issue of the magazine on Saturday as they emceed “Casino Royale” to benefit InterFaith Health Center. Kathryn was photographed during a luncheon at Ossoli Circle. Kathryn and her husband James and Frank and his wife Jere attended the dedication concert for the new pipe organ at the Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. One of the electromagnetic relays didn't work properly and caused an unexpected intermission in the concert. Frank and Jere visited Frank Jr. in Michigan and then drove to Sandusky, Ohio to view the total eclipse of the sun. Frank's daughter Meaghan and her sons also traveled to Sandusky. Jere and Frank Jr. found a perfect spot to view the eclipse in a park that had no crowds and a new pavilion with clean bathrooms. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the motel where they stayed. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). He also wore it while recording a video interview with the cast of Marble City Opera's production of Suor Angelica in 2019. Brandon Gibson, who was Marble City Opera's managing director, was wearing the same shirt. Two years earlier, Brandon first introduced Frank to Kathryn and to Marble City Opera. Brandon passed away unexpectedly in 2022. Kathryn recently began the process of hiring Brandon's replacement. Frank expressed an interest in the job, applied, and was hired. His first day was April 1 but Kathryn delayed the announcement until April 2 so no one would think it was an April Fool's joke. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Mitch Moore, who is a freelance writer. They are using Frank & Friends Show pint glasses for the first time. Mitch thought Mo the tortoise was ceramic but Frank urges him to watch episode 0019 at https://youtu.be/_LmUlhl7Kdk for the whole story. Frank and Mitch are not offended by meat but Frank's friend Bean does not eat meat from the types of animals he has owned as pets. Mitch makes animal noises to cats and dogs. Frank asks if he talks to all the animals like Doctor Dolittle. Frank and his wife Jere sent a metal detector as a birthday gift to their ten-year-old grandson Artie. It didn't work properly and Frank was asked to send a return code, which he had never done before. Metal detectors are associated with old men who probably wish they had a metal detector when they were ten. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Elyse Bruce, Creative Dynamo. Elyse's newest Missy Barrett mystery, The Case of the Missing Muskets, includes a chapter in which Missy and her mother visit the Frank & Friends Show. Frank and his wife Jere had leg-of-lamb for Easter. They tried to find a jar of mint jelly at a supermarket, which did not have any. The store's app lets you order mint jelly for $47. Jere finally found mint jelly at a competing supermarket for $3. Last Christmas, Elyse had difficulty finding mincemeat in local stores. Mincemeat is actually chopped fruit and nuts soaked in rum or other spirits. The supermarket staff sent her to the meat counter instead. Frank thinks that Easter candy is better than Halloween candy because he believes that Spring is better than Fall. Elyse is an October baby and prefers Fall. Elyse writes books about a fictional nine-year-old detective named Missy Barrett, who lives in Sevier County. Elyse created International Missy Barrett Day: A Day To Do Good Deeds and the Missy Barrett Stamp and Sticker Search in Sevier County. In The Case of the Missing Muskets, Missy visits her Grandpa's farm and falls into a hole that turns out to be a Civil War hiding place. She discovers blankets, coins and ammunition but no muskets. Elyse writes each weekday for four hours or 1500 words, whichever comes first. Her progress can get slowed by the research she needs to do to find the necessary details for the story. Elyse has a blog called Idiomation which can be found at https://idiomation.wordpress.com/ It was cited in Uncle John's Bathroom Reader and several other books. She started the blog to help her son, who is autistic, to understand figures of speech more easily. The idiom “water off a duck's back” makes Frank think of the ducklings his parents gave to him and his sisters for Easter one year. Frank wants to see the total solar eclipse on Monday. He thinks a partial eclipse is not as good as 100%. Knoxville will see only 88% totality. Elyse invited Frank to read his chapter during the book launch for The Case of the Missing Muskets on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at 3:30 p.m. at the King Family Public Library, 408 High Street, Sevierville, TN. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Mitch Moore, who is a freelance writer. Mitch watched his previous episode and wanted to make some adjustments. Mitch thinks that Frank & Friends sounds like Frankenfriends. Mitch asks Frank about the process of writing questions for Tennessee Scholars' Bowl. Frank and his wife have been reorganizing and rewriting many of the questions in the show's database. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). When Frank occasionally gets a song stuck in his head, it's often the Schaefer Beer jingle that he heard on New York Mets broadcasts as a child. His grandmother gave him a Ballantine beer clock for his bedroom. Mitch doesn't like lemons in his water. Frank might use the lemon to clean his fingers at the table. He wishes restaurants offered finger bowls and hot towels. Mitch thinks the cups for water at fast food restaurants are too small especially compared to the huge cups for soda. Frank has learned to let the water run so that it doesn't have the tint of fruit punch or lemonade. Frank thinks restaurants that serve spicy food should also serve milk. Frank is pictured in the March issue of VIP Knoxville. The magazine covered Marble City Opera's fundraiser that Frank emceed. On April 13, Frank and Heather Waliga will emcee the Casino Royale fundraiser for InterFaith Health Center. On April 19, Frank will emcee the East Tennessee Writers Hall of Fame Awards Gala, which is a fundraiser for Friends of Literacy. Frank posts his “selfies for the wardrobe department” on Facebook each day that a new episode of Scholars' Bowl airs. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Sarah Roberto, who arrived early for the recording. Frank came from a family that runs late but his wife Jere came from a family that runs early. Frank's friend Bean is moving back to England this week. They made plans to meet for lunch at a restaurant in Harriman. Frank planned to be early for their meeting but his car wouldn't start and he had to buy a new battery. Instead of being thirty minutes early, he was four minutes late for lunch. Sarah can taste the Dr Pepper flavor more easily than Frank can. Sarah thinks that Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are better than the Reese's holiday shapes but Frank prefers the holiday Reese's even if the eggs, hearts, and pumpkins look very similar. Frank likes to remind his friends that St. Patrick is associated with three-leaf shamrocks not four-leaf clovers. He also points out that the shortened form of Patrick is Paddy. Jere made shepherd's pie and Irish soda bread for St. Patrick's Day. Frank and Jere saw their friend Fr. Michael Woods riding atop a fire engine in the Knox St. Patrick's Parade and yelled "céad míle fáilte" to him. The grand marshal was comedian Josh Mancuso. Sarah made her first trip to Walt Disney World in January. She and her husband stayed for four days and chose the least busy week to visit. During Spring break Sarah and her husband took a short road trip to get a cheeseburger, fries, and a shake at Pal's in Jefferson City. The chain is only found in northeast Tennessee. Sarah says in her marriage, her husband gets the mail. When they were newlyweds, an older relative advised Frank and Jere to never open the other person's mail. Frank is surprised that Sarah and her husband can unlock each other's phones with their faces and that they also use the “share my location” feature to know their spouse's whereabouts. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Mitch Moore, who is a freelance writer. Frank saw Mitch in two plays at Flying Anvil Theatre. Mitch is also in a band called Vinyl Tap. Frank enjoyed Mitch's YouTube series, “State of Franklin,” which can be viewed here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-Tj30IQQQv9XbaT3cLnaMVYSZE6oeQDG&si=Yzx57FAoCzOLpWfT Frank met a doctor who thought it cost money to subscribe to YouTube channels. YouTube uses the word “subscribe” the same way Instagram uses the word “follow.” Please subscribe to the Frank & Friends Show on YouTube for free. Mitch and Frank are equally passionate about emphasizing that there is only one S in “Daylight Saving Time.” Frank's best time change experience happened when he and his friend Bean went on a business trip from Los Angeles to Lake Havasu City on the weekend that Daylight Saving Time started. Frank only had to change the clocks on his oven and microwave. He wonders if his next microwave will know the time and other information by being connected to the “internet of things.” This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Frank enjoyed Mitch's comedy web series “State of Franklin.” In the show, Ben Franklin time-travels to the home of Mitch's character. In addition to acting in the show, Mitch wrote, directed, and edited the episodes. Mitch has done stand-up comedy but finds improv to be daunting. Mitch was the middler on a bill at the Funny Bone in Knoxville when an up-and-coming Drew Carey was the headliner. The club owner fired Drew after three nights and replaced him with Ron White. Frank does improv and finds stand-up to be challenging. Frank did stand-up in a contest called Host with the Most. He prepared by going to several open-mic nights to polish his material. Frank also sold the most tickets to the contest in order to help him win. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Becca James, the girl with two first names. Becca went on a business trip to New Orleans during Mardi Gras. She saw several parades and received lots of beads. Frank points out that Lent appears to last 46 days but that the six Sundays don't count. He saved a bundt cake to eat on a Sunday. Frank's wife Jere hasn't bought any Girl Scout cookies because of Lent, but they plan to get a Thin Mint concrete at Andy's Frozen Custard. Becca's father came to visit. She took him to see WDVX's Blue Plate Special broadcast from Barley's. She wanted to take him to several of the local microbreweries but he gives up alcohol for Lent every year. He lives on a small ranch outside Austin, Texas. He brought some venison for Becca's family. Frank has ringing in his ears. He discovered that the noise goes away for a day or two when he takes a generic acetaminophen with diphenhydramine capsule. Becca urges him to see a doctor. It's the time of year when several of Frank's friends send him photos of Marshmallow Peeps displays in stores. Frank appreciates that the Peeps reminded them of him. He generally is not interested in flavored Peeps but would try S'mores Peeps. His daughter recommends Dr Pepper flavored Peeps. Frank's wife sent a bitmoji of herself with a frog on Leap Day but didn't look closely enough at the image. Kathryn asked Marble City Opera's social media coordinator Whitney Wells to create an Instagram post thanking Frank for emceeing the Pop-Up Opera Party. Frank was notified that he has to contact his domain registrar to update the name servers on his personal website. The software he used for his website is now outdated. He was able to update his bio on the Frank & Friends Show website and the Fun 105.9 website but not his Frank Murphy website. Frank's wife Jere asked the Amazon Echo a question by saying, “Alexa.” Instead her iPhone responded by saying, “I'm Siri, did you mean to ask me?” Jere lost an AirPod. Kathryn's AirPods went through the washing machine and survived. The “Find my AirPod” feature seems to be inaccurate. Kathryn lost her house key while walking the dog at night. She thought she would have to change the locks but was able to find the key the next morning. She might get an AirTag for her keys. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Jere and her coworkers play Wordle every day and share their results. Frank and Jere both have long streaks of solving the daily New York Times crossword puzzle. They also play Connections on the NYT app. A British game show called Only Connect has a round that is the same as Connections. A company in Japan created an AI toy robot and gave it an American-sounding name. The robot is called Frank Murphy, which turned up in Frank's Google News alert for his name. One of Frank's friends said he shouldn't use AI to generate a theme song for the show since he has so many friends who are writers and musicians. Frank wonders if one of them could benefit from writing a theme song for free. Kathryn might ask her husband to write one. She also says that her mother refers to Frank as “Uncle Frank.” Support the Frank & Friends Show by purchasing some of our high-quality merchandise at https://frank-friends-show.creator-spring.com Sign up for a 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady, who has been in Cleveland to direct a production of Glory Denied. Frank recorded a behind-the-scenes video at a rehearsal for the Akima Cabaret, which will take place on March 1 and 2, 2024 at the Mill & Mine. Frank will be the emcee and auctioneer for Marble City Opera's Pop-Up Opera Party on February 24, 2024. Frank tells Kathryn that he's not a real auctioneer and that last year he faked it. Buy tickets at https://www.marblecityopera.com/ Frank's friend Bean sent him a text about a member of Trans-Siberian Orchestra who passed away. Frank and Jere went to a TSO concert at Thompson-Boling Arena and recognized local violinist Julie Bélanger Roy on stage. Frank and Jere went to a Mannheim Steamroller concert at the Tennessee Theatre. They recognized several players from the Knoxville Symphony orchestra including violinist Sean Claire and oboist Claire Chenette. The band had just taken a bow when an announcement was made about a shooting nearby. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). She says there is a TikTok video that challenges people to steal Kia Souls. Frank saw a meme about a Kia Soul that thought it was a Tesla. Frank was parked at St. John's Cathedral while waiting for a Marble City Opera board meeting. He saw a vehicle from WVLT across the street. The employees of the TV station flew a drone over the parking lot, which is the proposed site for a new hotel. Frank and Jere watched a Detroit Lions playoff game but the sound on their over-the-air box doesn't work. Frank recommends watching a game with Jere's commentary. It felt the same as watching TV in a restaurant that you can see but not hear. Frank and Jere went to a movie theater to see three episodes of The Chosen. There was a five-minute intermission between the second and third episodes but Frank wished it was longer. Frank Murphy is on the podcast porch while it is snowing in Knoxville for the first time in 385 days. Frank has always disliked snow but now finds it more bearable because he can work from home instead of driving in it. Frank's big break in radio came when newscaster David Haines asked Frank to read the snow closing announcements on WAVA during the morning show. Frank wonders why most winter songs like “Winter Wonderland” and “A Marshmallow World” get lumped in with Christmas songs and get virtually no airplay after Christmas Day. Some of the students from Science Hill High School commented on Frank's ties during an episode of Tennessee Scholars' Bowl. Before each episode, Frank takes a “selfie for the wardrobe department.” Frank's wife Jere is the “wardrobe department.” Tennessee Scholars' Bowl airs weekdays at 5:30 p.m. on East Tennessee PBS. Frank and Jere went to dinner with Jere's sister and her husband at Ristorante DellaSantina in Sevierville. He saw local actor Mitch Moore at the restaurant and invited him to be on the podcast. Frank enjoyed a s'mores old fashioned before his pasta dinner. Frank and Jere traveled to Northern Virginia to see family members. Frank and his sisters visited his daughter Meaghan's art studio to see some of the paintings and prints she has for sale. See Meaghan's artwork at https://instagram.com/mdecelleart/ One of the other artist's in the same studio complex as Meaghan is a surrealist who includes a lot of skulls in his work. Frank asked if he knew of the Body Farm. The artist said yes and that he would like to walk off into the snow when it's time for him to die. Frank had the idea to pour bacon grease onto a tree stump in the hope that birds and chipmunks would gnaw on the stump to use it like a suet feeder. Frank has twice forgotten to retrieve the frying pan from the stump. He also buries coffee grounds and eggshells in various spots around the yard. When Frank and Jere went to a coffee shop on Sunday, the barista accidentally shut down the register after taking Jere's order but before taking Frank's order. The barista was able to make Frank's latte by the time the register restarted. Frank and Jere ordered tuna salad sandwiches at a restaurant known for its bread. Frank was surprised that a full order consisted of two sandwiches. He and Jere both asked for no onions. Jere's sandwich had onions but no tuna. A technician from the HVAC company told Frank to reorder box-style filters. He also told Frank that he recommends box filters for all his elderly customers. Frank resisted the temptation to correct the spelling and grammar on the report from a plumber who fixed a pipe under the sink. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera, who will be performing as Olha in The Christmas Spider on January 6, 2024 at St. John's Cathedral. Tickets and information at https://www.marblecityopera.com/ Children's tickets are free with the discount code PENNYARTS. Kathryn stopped by the final Einstein Simplified improv show of the year. At the show, someone in the balcony dropped their vape device on Frank's wife Jere. Frank performed in a game in which the other improviser could only read lines from an audience member's text messages. One time when Frank was reading the texts, the girlfriend of the phone's owner stormed out. Frank felt bad about breaking up the couple but Kathryn's perspective is that Frank saved the girl from a bad relationship. Kathryn performed in The Christmas Spider in Baton Rouge in December. There will be two performances in Knoxville on January 6, 2024. Each performance will feature different children in the lead roles. The first show is at 2:30 p.m. and the other is at 5:00 p.m. Kathryn's aunt gave her a gift that was in an empty box of chocolates. It was a small painting of Kathryn's dog. She once bought an empty gift box that was decorated to look like it contained an earwax candle. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). One time she had a flat tire but didn't leave him a voicemail. She kept calling back until he answered. Another time he yelled at Siri to answer. Kathryn suggests that he wear his AirPods all day. Another time when Jere couldn't reach Frank, she asked their next-door neighbor to check on him. Frank has tried using the Google AI program called Bard to help him write a letter of recommendation. He also tried asking it to write a theme song for the Frank & Friends Show. When Frank turned on his work computer, it was open to a Bing browser showing Christmas gift ideas. It appears to have done that by itself. The new season of Tennessee Scholars' Bowl begins airing on January 8, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. on East Tennessee PBS. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Becca James, the girl with two first names. This year had the shortest possible Advent because Christmas fell on a Monday. Becca's parents would celebrate the Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve. Frank's wife put him in charge of ordering matching Christmas pajamas for their grandchildren this year. Becca tried ordering matching pajamas but she described it as her “failed family tradition.” Frank's wife was very busy with rehearsals for the Knoxville Choral Society and for her church choir. They will be able to sleep late and stay home on Christmas Day. Frank's wife wants to make Christmas crackers, which Frank assumed was a confection like cracker candy. Instead, she plans to make British-style Christmas crackers from paper towel rolls and tissue paper for a party later this week. Becca had a good experience buying a crocheted bumblebee from an Etsy seller. Frank and his wife Jere tried to buy a birthday gift for their daughter from Etsy. It immediately charged Jere's Apple Pay and used Jere's shipping address without giving her a chance to change it to their daughter's address. Becca once set up a surprise vacation for her husband to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando. She used Etsy to buy him a wand like those in the movies. Frank's wife does the long-distance driving in their family but Frank handles the city driving in Washington or New York. Frank was pictured in a recent issue of VIP Knoxville magazine. He was shown in a costume jacket when he emceed a pirate-themed fundraiser for GO! Contemporary Dance Works. Frank was asked to emcee an upcoming black-tie fundraiser at a fancy country club. They were surprised he didn't own a tuxedo. Sometimes charities are able to get a tuxedo rental in exchange for an ad in the program. Becca compliments Frank's skills and he is reminded of a positive review he got from a listener in a radio focus group. Frank recalls how a radio general manager would denigrate his major-market morning show as their contract renewal time neared. Frank made a joke about some Pyrex bowls that Jere bought. When he repeated the joke to their son, Jere called Frank a hack for reusing his material. Becca and Frank have a behind-the-scenes conversation about commercial breaks on radio stations and some of the rules they had to follow as deejays. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Becca James, the girl with two first names. Frank has been resisting the urge to buy Weigel's eggnog but has been seeing online ads for Weigel's new delivery service. Frank's friend Houston Vandergriff played a shepherd in the Nativity Pageant of Knoxville. Frank met Houston when he played a toy soldier in the Nutcracker with the Oak Ridge Civic Ballet Association. Becca knows Houston from his volunteer work on the Culinary Arts stage at the Tennessee Valley Fair. Houston is a photographer and advocate for people with Down syndrome. He gave Frank a calendar with beautiful photos from his worldwide travels. Visit https://www.downsandtowns.com/ The Knoxville Ice Bears had to postpone their games for the weekend after the Nativity Pageant because of an equipment malfunction that prevented the ice from freezing. Frank recalls a similar problem from two years ago when Kathryn Frady was scheduled to sing the national anthem and Frank was scheduled to drop the puck but the game had to be rescheduled due to soft ice. Becca lost at Whamageddon when the song “Last Christmas” played at the Christmas party for her company's employees and their children. Frank realized that he lost his own similar game when he heard the song “Mary Did You Know.” The lyrics of the song are contradicted by the Gospel of Luke. Frank's friend Bean says “Last Christmas” is not really a Christmas song and the movie Die Hard is not a Christmas movie. They just happen to take place at Christmas. Becca believes that Die Hard is a Christmas movie. Frank learned that Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho was almost ruined by the Christmas decorations visible in the background of the Phoenix scenes. Hitchcock solved the problem by displaying the words “Friday, December 11” on the screen at the beginning of the film. Frank was listening to ChristmasFM when the song “The Christmas Shoes” came on. Frank is frustrated that the kid in the song left his dying mother's side to go shopping for shoes instead of spending time with her. Frank wonders what the dying woman would do with the shoes. Becca is disappointed with Frank's opinion of kolaches, a pastry that can be filled with sweet or savory fillings. The one that Frank tried seemed like a hot dog in a bun. Becca suggests trying different fillings, perhaps with cheese. Frank and Becca were pleased with how well things went at the Karns Christmas Parade. Frank also announced the Rocky Hill Christmas Parade and watched the stream of the parade in downtown Knoxville. He feels there are too many Grinches in the parades. He also noticed an increase in Grinch decorations around town. Frank noticed some inflatable Buc-ee's Beaver decorations. Becca and her husband dislike inflatables because of how they look when deflated during the day. Frank and Becca both went to see the Christmas decorations on Gray Eagle Lane off Bob Gray Road. Frank saw on the news that the owner of the house with the most decorations became president of the homeowners association. All but two of the houses on the street are decorated. Christmas lights in Knoxville map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Pi5dKsbWhgAmrJkWA Shadrack's Christmas Wonderland has moved from Smokies Stadium to Soaky Mountain Waterpark. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Sarah Roberto, who says she is merry and bright, like the words on her sweatshirt. Frank is wearing a loud Christmas blazer that he bought at Kroger. Sarah notices the antique Christmas ornaments that were once owned by Jere's Aunt Dee. Jere will sing at a Christmas Eve Mass. Frank signed up to read at the Midnight Mass after finally finding his password for the ministry app on his phone. When Frank was a kid, his parents would buy their Christmas tree on Christmas Eve and keep it up into January. Frank wishes radio stations kept playing Christmas music until New Year's Day. Brenda Lee's “Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree” is number one on Billboard's chart this week. Billboard changed the way they do their charts several years ago. Frank's favorite Christmas song is “A Christmas Festival Overture” by the Boston Pops. Sarah's favorite Christmas song is "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" by Gayla Peevey. Hippos are the deadliest large land mammals. Frank and Jere went to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert at Thompson-Boling Arena. He says the audience sits through most of the show and the volume is not too loud. They sat close enough to feel the heat from the fire effects on stage. Sarah asks about raucous concerts. Frank recalls a punk rock show where he slam-danced unenthusiastically. Sarah got injured at a Foo Fighters concert in Atlanta in 2000. Frank is dissatisfied with the over-abundance of secular Christmas songs on American radio. He also dislikes down-tempo songs. Frank listens online to Ireland's ChristmasFM. Sarah's favorite Christmas movies are National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and Elf. She says It's a Wonderful Life is too depressing. She likes The Holiday and Last Holiday. Frank watched a Christmas rom-com last year that starred Lindsey Lohan. Frank and Sarah both watched a Dolly Parton Christmas movie on NBC last year. It wasn't very good but it was fun to see many familiar faces from Sevier County. Frank and Sarah agree that The Polar Express is a creepy-looking movie. Sarah says the twenty-foot skeleton on Frank's street has lost its head. Frank thinks his neighbor is probably removing its pilgrim hat to add a Santa hat. The skeleton is pictured on Google Street View. Frank disliked the noise being made by a holly tree scraping against the house. As he pruned away the problem branches, his neighbor asked if he planned to put Christmas lights on the tree. Frank recalls a time that Frank Jr. told Mark & Brian on KLOS that Grandma snores. She was unhappy when the man who owned the pool supply store said, “Hey Grandma, I heard that you snore!” This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Frank points out that the Nativity Pageant is not affiliated with any particular church or denomination. Members of all Christian denominations participate in the pageant. Mindy was a majorette at the University of Tennessee. She owns a twirling school called TriStar Twirl. Frank often sees Mindy and TriStar Twirl in the Christmas parades he announces. One of Frank's favorite things backstage at the pageant is a spiced hot tea made from iced tea mix, Tang and other spices and flavors. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Becca James, the girl with two first names. Frank and Becca will announce the Karns Christmas Parade live on the Karns Network YouTube channel on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/live/iYgkrOlnE6s?si=DTpkaMxnRNclPy4L Frank has finished recording the 2024 season of Tennessee Scholars' Bowl. which will begin airing weekdays at 5:30 p.m. on January 8, 2024 on East Tennessee PBS. One of the students gave Frank a tie with the Scholars' Bowl logo. While looking for vocabulary words, Frank saw that the word whelm means engulf, submerge, or bury. Frank was talking with a married couple at church and they offered to send him some art history questions for Scholars' Bowl. A few days later, Frank saw the couple at a clothing store and loudly called out, “Where are those art history pictures I was supposed to see?” Becca is surprised to hear that Kohl's has dropped the brands of shirts and jackets that her husband and Frank like to wear. Frank says Kohl's has broken up with him because he has aged out of their demographic. Frank looked online for Chaps and Van Heusen shirts and saw that he could buy them across the street at JCPenney. Becca will participate in Whamageddon during December. To win, you have to avoid hearing Wham's “Last Christmas.” Frank wants to hear the song everyday because it's one of his favorites and he likes playing it on the radio. Frank is on FUN 105.9 weekdays from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Listen online at https://www.fun1059.com/ When Frank worked on the Kevin & Bean Show at KROQ-FM, the show's comedy writer was Jimmy Kimmel. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera, who noticed that Frank put a new dryer sheet in his shirt pocket. Frank admits that the leaves in his backyard were pretty even though he thinks of autumn as dying and winter as death. Frank and his wife Jere were busy preparing questions for Tennessee Scholars' Bowl. He is happy that Jere bought two wireless mice for Frank to use on his two work computers. Some of the students on Scholars' Bowl have memorized the questions from previous years. Frank is gradually rewriting the questions in his “voice” rather than that of previous hosts. Frank got a thank-you card from his friends Kristen and Jeff Detrow. They were busy working on a fundraiser for the Blount County Animal Center and couldn't come over for a podcast. Kathryn wonders if she could hire Frank to do a presentation about the Body Farm in conjunction with her upcoming world premiere of the opera The Doctor & The Devils. Learn about the opera at https://www.marblecityopera.com/doctorandthedevils Frank's sister-in-law and her husband have a book that lists several places to visit in each of the fifty states. The Tennessee chapter mentions a fancy restaurant in Knoxville. Frank was surprised by the attentiveness of the maitre d. Frank enjoyed the ginger beer at the fancy restaurant. Kathryn's husband once tried to serve her crab meat soaked in ginger beer, which tasted terrible. When Frank made a comment about the symbolism on the Tennessee flag, Kathryn calls him Mr. Owl, which prompts Frank to play the Mr. Owl theme song, which was composed and recorded by musician Steve Barden during Frank's time at KLOS-FM. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera, who is helping to coach the cast of the University of Tennessee Opera Theatre production of Suor Angelica, which is on a double bill with The Medium. Kathryn's husband James Marvel is the director of the production, with performances on November 10, 11, and 12, 2023 at the Bijou Theatre. Tickets are available at https://knoxbijou.org/events/ Frank and his wife Jere went to dinner with Kathryn and James at Clancy's Tavern & Whiskey House next to the Tennessee Theatre. Frank thinks Kathryn should have a Pint-Sized Opera at Clancy's after her successful event at Fanatic Brewing. Frank and Jere discovered that they enjoy the house brand of corn chips at Aldi that is also called Clancy's. He thinks it would be funny if there were retro-style commercials for Clancy's. Kathryn realizes that she had some corn chips and candies in her see-through purse. Many theaters now have a clear-bag policy. Frank gave a presentation about the history of the Body Farm to the Friends of the Vonore Library that was scheduled through BoneZones.com. It went well and he might get hired for additional presentations. The audience was surprised to hear some details about the cremation process. Kathryn wonders if she could hire Frank to do a presentation about the Body Farm in conjunction with her upcoming world premiere of the opera The Doctor & The Devils. Learn about the opera at https://www.marblecityopera.com/doctorandthedevils Frank thinks that East Tennessee PBS might repeat his interview with Kathryn on the show Up Close with Frank Murphy on November 29, 2023 at 12:00 a.m. It's also available on demand on the PBS App and at https://www.pbs.org/show/up-close/ Frank knows three people who misplaced their phones. Jere actually had the phone in her pocket. His friend Stacey was talking on the phone when she thought it was misplaced. Neighbor Nancy left hers in a cart at the grocery store. Frank went to the store with her to help her find it. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Sarah Roberto, who brought an assortment of Halloween candy. Some of the candies are on lists of the best or worst candy. Leave a comment about your favorite and least favorite candies. Sarah supported the Frank & Friends Show by purchasing a bucket hat at https://frank-friends-show.creator-spring.com The receptionist at the building where Frank worked would bring a bowl of candy corn and peanuts to the office every October. Sarah thought she hated candy corn but was surprised that she likes the salty-sweet combination. A radio guy named Donnie Andrews posted a list of the “worst” Halloween candies on Facebook. Frank loves most of the candies on Donnie's list, especially Circus Peanuts and Good & Plenty, both of which Sarah hates. Frank is happy that Sarah brought Marshmallow Peeps Pumpkins, which he suggests roasting over a flame. The box of Dots has three rebus puzzles on the back. Someone inquired about hiring Einstein Simplified to create an Addams Family flash mob. Frank realized that the troupe members could play the main characters but that he would have to be Thing. Sarah prefers Halloween over Valentine's Day. Frank explains the Catholic origins of Valentine's Day and Halloween. Sarah says KitKats are the best Halloween candy. Frank would confuse them with Twix. Frank thinks Reese's pumpkins are among the best Halloween candies. Sarah mentions Reese's Pieces and impersonates E.T. Frank dislikes the Neil Diamond song about E.T. but has come to like other Neil Diamond songs. Frank shares some Frankenstein trivia. In the book, the monster's name was Adam. Frank got a text on a Tuesday night from a member of Einstein Simplified asking him to bring water. The members of the troupe forgot Frank was on hiatus. He's planning to return to the improv shows on November 21. Sarah jokes that Frank should see how many Marshmallow Peeps Frank can put in his mouth without realizing that he did that bit on the radio several times. Frank tells about inviting the Peeps Fun Bus to make an appearance at an Einstein Simplified show in 2003. Frank transferred from LakeFM to FUN 105.9 to play ‘70s and ‘80s hits. The new format on 104.9 is ‘90s & 2000s throwbacks. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera, who suggests that we are now in the month of Knoxtober. Kathryn says she would wear a Frank & Friends fascinator if such a product existed. The nice family across the street from Frank's house made scarecrow versions of themselves and put them in the front yard. Frank bought a Knox County School Coupon Book from one of the kids. Kathryn had random solicitors in Baton Rouge selling security systems. Kathryn puts the school coupons she's most likely to use in her wallet right away. Kathryn suggests Frank could use a coupon to get a free kids meal because he's on Richard Jeni's “Joey Falco Diet Plan.” Kathryn's smoke alarm started beeping at 5:30 a.m. She removed the battery but it kept beeping because it was also connected by wires. She was surprised to discover that other people were awake at that time. She felt like a tourist but Frank thought she said Taurus. Frank and his wife Jere sat behind a woman named Ruth at a concert by the Amadeus Chamber Ensemble at the Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. After making small talk about Northern Virginia before the show, Frank noticed Ruth was writing herself a note that recapped their conversation. Frank transferred from LakeFM to FUN 105.9 to play ‘70s and ‘80s hits. The new format on 104.9 is ‘90s & 2000s throwbacks. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Sarah Roberto, who said a word that needed to be bleeped the last time she was here. Sarah posted a video on TikTok about chicken that tastes too chickeny. Frank used to feel that way about salmon. Sarah often posts about weight loss. Frank encouraged his wife Jere to buy an apple walnut cake, which they sliced, wrapped individually, and froze for later. The apple cider doughnuts went bad because they didn't eat them soon enough. Frank is glad that he lost a little weight and can wear the shirts and jackets he wore in 2021 while recording Tennessee Scholars' Bowl. He practiced trimming his beard this morning. The Children's Museum of Oak Ridge asked Frank which photo of him to include with their press release about their annual gala which he will emcee on Friday, November 17, 2023. Get tickets and information here: https://childrensmuseumofoakridge.org/ Several years ago Sarah persuaded Frank to enter the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Man and Woman of the Year fundraising competition. Frank won the contest to be Man of the Year in 2017. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). She thinks October is the best month of the year. Frank prefers June. Frank thinks of Fall as a coming attraction for Winter. Frank went to his first country concert recently. He was given a press pass to Emily Ann Roberts' concert on the day her album “Can't Hide Country” was released. If you zoom in on a photo of the theater, you can see Frank in the audience. Emily Ann was on The Voice. Her opening act was Alex Miller, who was on American Idol. Frank enjoyed both performances. He also enjoyed hearing Emily Ann talk about her songwriting process. Sarah booked Morgan Wallen to be an opening act at the Tennessee Valley Fair in 2014 and 2015. One of the shows sold poorly and Sarah apologized to Morgan. When she booked him as a headliner a few years later, the tickets sold out. Emily Ann was supposed to open for .38 Special at the Secret City Festival but the concert was canceled due to weather. The night before, Frank had the assignment of walking on stage to cut short the Loverboy concert. Fortunately Mike Reno saw Frank coming and launched into “Working for the Weekend.” Frank transferred from 104.9 LakeFM to FUN 105.9. A few times Frank saw Chef Walter returning that day's floral centerpiece to Food City in Bearden. Stacy's grandmothers would write down Chef Walter's recipes in their personal cookbooks. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Sarah Roberto, who brought her trendy Stanley Quencher tumbler. She says some people hide a can of hard seltzer on ice in the tumbler. Sarah enjoys visiting Washington, D.C. She and her husband felt lucky to get tickets to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum because the tickets are often sold out. Frank's neighbor across the street asked Frank to keep an eye on his pool. When Frank texted his contact card to the neighbor, the man was surprised to see the photo of “professional Frank” instead of “neighborhood Frank.” Sarah used artificial intelligence to create images of herself in different situations. She created a headshot and an image with the U.S. Capitol in the background. Sarah likes Frank's neighborhood because the neighbors know each other. When Frank's home alarm went off, six different neighbors checked on things to make sure it was just a false alarm. Sarah promises to bring iced pumpkin spice coffee the next time she visits. Kathryn's upstairs air conditioning unit isn't working properly. She thinks the repairman has not been up to the attic, where he would see the creepy painting of a child that has been there since before Kathryn and her husband moved in. She discussed it a year and a half ago in podcast episode 0025, “Attic Painting Ghost Girl” which can be seen at https://youtu.be/uP019i2sjNY Kathryn asked Frank to record a video of Marble City Opera's “Stalactites, Sopranos, and Stilettos" concert in order to make fifteen-second clips for social media. Frank recorded the entire one-hour concert rather than be responsible for choosing which fifteen seconds to record. Frank enjoyed the performance of Rossini's "Duetto buffo di due gatti” (The Cat Duet), which Kathryn rearranged as a trio to sing with Jacquie Brecheen and April Hill. A brief video clip is included. Frank tried to AirDrop the one-hour video to Kathryn but there wasn't enough memory on her iPhone. He offered to show her how to go to Settings, General, iPhone Storage, Messages, Review Large Attachments and then delete a few files but she wanted no part of it. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. Frank is mildly surprised that Kathryn isn't in Baton Rouge at the moment. Frank wonders if Louisiana has a state income tax (it does). Frank considers yard work and gardening to be his exercise program. He bought a tray of wilting marigolds from the clearance shelf but they are now thriving in his garden. Frank wants to grow more perennials like day lilies instead of annuals like the marigolds. This time last year, Frank was spending hours per day harvesting figs. No figs have ripened yet this year because the trees are behind schedule due to the winter freeze and the extreme pruning that was necessary. Dr. Frank Jr. PhD arrived for a visit shortly after a strong thunderstorm that knocked down several fig branches. They cut away the damaged branches but since then Frank has been bothered by a rash on his legs that could be from the irritating fig sap. Frank planted parts of the damaged branches on his property and on his neighbor's property. Frank's wife Jere is concerned that there is no more room in the yard for more fig trees. Another neighbor has a new pool and asked Frank to clean it for a week. The neighbor also invited Frank to pick some apples from his tree. Frank put his grandsons on his shoulders to reach the higher fruit. When Frank's daughter arrived, she made applesauce and apple butter from the fruit the boys picked. Frank and both boys rode the Dragonflier roller coaster. Frank and Artie then rode Big Bear Mountain. Frank wished the wait time had been longer because he felt unwell after Big Bear Mountain. He skipped lunch but later Jere bought him a soft pretzel that was the best thing he ate all day. He ate the pretzel while enjoying the Dreamland Drive-In show, which Frank's friend Mike Howard is stage managing. Kathryn took her husband James to Andy's Frozen Custard in Baton Rouge. It was his first visit and he asked for a cone with cookie-dough ice cream, which is not on the menu. Kathryn improvised by ordering a cup of vanilla custard with cookie-dough mixed in and then requested an empty cone and a spoon. Frank went to two wedding receptions that had cookie bars, meaning a buffet assortment of cookies, many of which reminded Frank of Christmas baking. At one reception, the cookies were uncovered after dinner. At the other reception, the cookie bar was set up near the bar before the dining room was opened. At the fancy reception, Frank was excited to meet a radio sports announcer who was assigned to the same table. Frank and Jere were the only people at the table because the sports announcer didn't show up. The guests at another table invited Frank and Jere to squeeze into their table rather than sit alone. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Becca James. Strong thunderstorms on August 7, 2023 knocked out the power at Becca's house. At the time of this recording, she had been without electricity for over 17 hours and the utility company predicted that it would be another 13 hours before power is restored. Becca got a new smartwatch, which is waterproof. Frank asks if it makes a noise after being immersed in water like his daughter's Apple watch does. Frank and Becca used to work for a company that asked them to wear Fitbits to lower their insurance premiums. Frank sprained his ankle while jogging in place in an effort to increase his step count. Becca was up early to buy ice to keep her perishable food cold while the power is out. Frank saw many photos on Facebook of huge trees that fell in several Knoxville neighborhoods. After the storm, Becca picked up her kids from daycare and brought them to the YMCA, which had power. Her husband picked up pizza for dinner and they finally used some of the camping supplies they've had for years. Frank was worried Becca would cancel today's recording session but she was happy to come over and put on her makeup in Frank's air-conditioned house. It was difficult for Becca's kids to fall asleep without their customary white noise generator. Frank's grandson Artie listens to thunderstorm noises to fall asleep. One night while Artie and Timmy were visiting, they listened to a real thunderstorm on the Amazon Echo instead. Artie uses the Echo to call his parents by telling the device their ten-digit phone numbers. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Frank couldn't find Mo this morning until he opened the container with the BoneZones merchandise. Becca had not heard the story of Mo's preservation by Al Holmes Taxidermy. Frank put Mo next to a hydrangea flower that he picked this morning. His wife brought home some houseplants from her office for Frank to nurse back to life. Frank and Becca are both trying to lose a few pounds. Frank said it was especially difficult while his grandchildren visited. They are accustomed to eating “lunch dessert.” One day they made popsicles with orange soda. Another day they went to a hot dog restaurant that also serves Blue Bell ice cream. Adam Ragusea posted a recipe for making ice cream with dry ice. Frank called several businesses in search of dry ice. He told a regular ice company that he was a fan of their ice with a hole in the middle. The dry ice cream tasted like a soda float due to the carbonic acid from the dry ice. Frank used fig syrup to make some fig flavored ice cream. Frank and Jere made imitation orange chicken with dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets. The sauce contains orange marmalade, barbeque sauce and soy sauce. Sign up for a 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep.
