The year is 2025. In this dystopian future, all stats tracking has broken down and the meta has descended in to an unpredictable chaos where a cabal of space wizards rules over unlikely contenders. With the threat of More Dakka eradicated and the Devoted of Ynnead nowhere to be seen (in the 55% and above winrate) three bold heroes band together to bring you the stats.... the old fashioned way. Alien Romulus is proof that anything with a Xenomorph in it should only allow Ridley Scott on set as a Producer. It's a much needed return to the Xenomorph-verse that gives the audience nonstop nerve-wrecking action, just enough sci to fi, nostalgic easter eggs, and fun elements adapted directly from the more recent Aliens videos game like Alien: Isolation. This film does an amazing job if amping up the anticipation for the upcoming FX TV Series, Alien: Earth. Cailee Spaeny fills the shoes of Ripley very well and David Jonsson deserves all the praise for his performance as Andy, an android who gets an upgrade in autonomy. Streaming now on Youtube, Apple TV, FandangoAtHome, Amazon Video, etc ♦♦ Director: Fede Alvarez Writers: Fede Alvarez, Rado Sayagues Starring: Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Aileen Wu, Archie Renaux Runtime: 1 Hour 59 Minutes Synopsis: Rain and her android Andy join a group of young workers and attempt to escape their indefinite indentured servitude by boarding an abandoned Weyland-Yutani space station only to discover the station is the home of a Xenomorph with some new toys to impregnate. “I'm fond of the Loch Ness Monster but not enough to jizz” The panel of peril stand before boardroom, magic marker in hand, and write “PANEL OF PERILS” on the whiteboard. They then turn the S into a $, and the rest is history. To celebrate a successful bit o' business, they watch this week's film Aliens (James Cameron, 1986). Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) wakes up from a decades-long cryo-sleep only to find herself pushed back into conflict with the xenomorph$ she encountered aboard the Nostromo. Accompanied by Weyland-Yutani rep Carter Burke (Paul Reiser) and a band of Colonial Marines headed up by sexy boy Hicks (Michael Biehn), Ripley heads back to LV-426 to mop up what remains of the penis-headed not-so-sexy boys. Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSeQQlaCZgU ********PLOT SPOILER ALERT******** Naturally Burke sees Ripley, young orphan Newt (Carrie Henn) and the team of Marines as expendable. The only thing that matters is capturing that sweet sexy xenomorph for the nefarious Company. Will he succeed by facehuggering Ripley and Newt, or will the ragtag group of roughnecks shoot their way out of a very, very bad $ituation? What did the heck panel think of this week's movie? How in all that is holy can they improve upon the Burke's scheme? And which evil schemer will be christened this week's most diabolical? This is rumour control - here are the facts. Peter and Phil discuss the third film in the Alien franchise that has polarised audiences since 1992. See what we think - do we enjoy the nihilistic, dour, dark story of convict monks on a prison planet? We also talk through the very interesting fraught behind the scenes stories featuring a first time director (who would go on to become very famous) versus a studio that at times seems to be acting like Weyland-Yutani. The ALIEN franchise is one of the most successful horror franchises of all time. ALIEN (1979) and the sequel ALIENS (1986) are two of the best films of all time. Others in the franchise have received fine reviews and have interesting premises. Now, the new movie in the franchise, ALIEN: ROMULUS, has arrived.Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and her synthetic brother Andy (David Jonsson) work for the company Weyland-Yutani as essentially indentured servants. When Rain's ex-boyfriend suggests a chance to flee to a different planet, Rain and the group head to an abandoned space station in orbit to get the fuel needed. Unfortunately there is a secret onboard that may be the death of them all.The film is directed by Fede Alvarez and co-written with his film partner Rodo Sayagues. The film takes place between the first two films in the franchise. Receiving decent enough reviews, the movie is the first from Disney and has been a financial success. Your co-hosts take a look at the film and give their thoughts.
You've heard of Alien VS Predator, but with Alien: Romulus and Terminator Zero having just come out, we debate Alien VS Terminator! Mucci advocates for the iconic xenomorph design and the stamp directors such as David Fincher, James Cameron, and of course Ridley Scott put on the franchise. Speaking of James Cameron, Lando details perhaps his most iconic franchise, with Arnold Schwarzenegger's most iconic role and the classic story of John Connor, future war hero. Will Judge Huy be impressed by the corporate law discussion of Skynet and Weyland-Yutani? And in our Recess segment, it's the return of Interrogatories -- Lando and Huy quiz each other on their respective properties! OTR Theme by Lando and Mucci. Fede Álvarez's ALIEN: ROMULUS is at its core an act of homage to the larger franchise, but is that a feature, a bug, or both? That's a question we attempt to reconcile in our discussion of Álvarez's acid-blood-soaked film, before comparing how this late-stage sequel compares with the franchise's original sequel, James Cameron's ALIENS, in iterating on the corporate meddling of Weyland-Yutani, the evolving nature of artificial humans, and comedy as characterization. And for Your Next Picture Show, we pivot hard away from this franchise-driven pairing for a recommendation of Spanish filmmaker Víctor Erice's first feature in over three decades, CLOSE YOUR EYES. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about ALIENS, ALIEN: ROMULUS, and anything else in the world of film and/or xenomorphs, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. GAME OVER, MAN! Alien August continues with Kelsi and Trey's exploration of the iconic sequel to Ridley Scott's 'Alien.' We discuss the action spectacle of 'Aliens,' and Cameron's legacy as an escapist blockbuster filmmaker, as well as how he struggles to totally realize his commentaries of a marine-Vietnam satire, the motherhood ideas, and the power dynamics of Weyland-Yutani via Burke. Regardless of the movie's contradiction, the film's action set pieces make this Sigourney Weaver-led film a memorable one, especially when Ellen Ripley leads an iconic ensemble into battle next to legendary character actors like Bill Paxton. Franchises were a mistake... it's time to admit it. No matter how great the original film is, eventually the rights will be purchased by Disney and they will make slop. Will we eat the slop? Yes... because we are pigs. But will we like it? Disney and Weyland-Yutani are not concerned with the answer to that question. We're back with the latest and (as of this publishing) last entry in the Alien series ALIEN: ROMULUS. Ben and Alex are joined by Generative AI CGI Jordan to help them along their journey. All our chips were on this movie... did it pay off? Or were the boys fooled by the marketing department again? Listen and find out!We also talk about Alex and Ben's Wacky Movie Weekend where went to the theatre together to a bunch of films. On Episode 121 of The Film ‘89 Podcast, Skye is joined by returning guest host, filmmaker Martin Kessler, to give you their in-depth and spoiler-filled review of director Fede Alvarez's new film, Alien: Romulus, the seventh film in the saga that began 45 years ago with Ridley Scott's seminal Alien. Following Scott's two most recent films in the franchise, pseudo-prequel Prometheus (2012) and it's follow up, Alien: Covenant (2017), Alvarez's film is set 20 years after Alien but 37 years before James Cameron's Aliens to tell an isolated story of a crew of young Weyland Yutani mining colony workers who end up going head to head with the deadly creatures on an abandoned space station. Will Alvarez's film breathe new life into a franchise that some feel was choked by Scott's previous two films' over-intellectualisation of the series, or will it just give fans a force-fed meal of Alien related best-of moments?
Hey there, Watchers! In this special quick-review episode, Whitey dives into the much-anticipated Alien: Romulus with his Alien Romulus Quick Review. This is Whitey's first solo movie breakdown, so let's see how he handles the acid-blooded pressure of reviewing one of the year's most anticipated sci-fi horror films!Alien: Romulus delivers the pulse-pounding tension and gritty horror that fans have been waiting for. Director Fede Álvarez knocks it out of the park by dialling the franchise back to its roots. The story is simple and effective: a group of space colonists finds themselves trapped on a derelict station, fighting for survival as the Xenomorphs hunt them. It's a setup we know well, but here it works because Álvarez knows how to make the familiar feel fresh. The setting itself, the Romulus space station, feels alive with danger. It's dark, decaying, and claustrophobic—a perfect playground for the terrifying, acid-blooded creatures we've come to fear. The practical effects are superb, with the Xenomorphs looking slimy, grotesque, and scarier than in years. Álvarez balances this with moments of eerie silence, making you dread what's lurking in the shadows. It's the kind of movie that keeps you gripping your seat.Cailee Spaeny leads the charge as Rain Carradine, and she's fantastic. She's got the same no-nonsense survival instinct that made Ripley iconic, but with her spin. Spaeny is intense without overdoing it, and her character feels real—vulnerable but tough. David Jonsson also adds a solid performance as her synthetic brother Andy, offering a unique emotional layer amidst the chaos.Overall, Alien: Romulus is a thrilling ride that pays homage to the original while carving its path. It's tense, atmospheric, and packed with scares. Fans of the franchise are going to love this one."When it comes to the Alien franchise, few film series have left such a lasting impact on both science fiction and horror. Ridley Scott's 1979 Alien introduced a new kind of space terror, blending atmospheric tension with groundbreaking creature design, courtesy of H.R. Giger. The film set the template for a claustrophobic, survival-based narrative. At the same time, James Cameron's 1986 sequel Aliens ramped up the action, turning the franchise into a blend of horror and military sci-fi.Subsequent entries like Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection had their own take on the mythology, though with mixed receptions, often criticised for straying too far from what made the originals great. The prequels, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, attempted to expand the universe's lore, diving into the origins of the Xenomorphs and broader existential themes, but often polarised the fanbase with their more cerebral approach.Alien: Romulus sits somewhere between the original films and the newer prequels. It strips away the complex world-building seen in Prometheus and Covenant, opting for a more straightforward survival horror, much like Alien and Aliens. It feels like a love letter to the franchise's gritty roots while still exploring fresh ideas. It's a return to form, focusing on what the series does best—intense, claustrophobic horror, with a few new twists that keep it relevant for today's audience. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcasthttps://www.borntowatch.com.au/
