Maybe the real monster in the Alien franchise isn't actually the killer alien. Because behind the acid blood and jump scares is an even more insidious horror: a single employer with unchecked power. That employer is named Weyland-Yutani, a mega-corporation that dominates workers across the galaxy.Weyland-Yutani is a sort of extreme example of what economists call a monopsony — when one employer dominates a labor market and gains power to underpay and mistreat workers. Sure, it's science fiction. But a growing number of economists argue that monopsony power is a much bigger deal in the real world than previously thought.We watch scenes from the movie Alien with labor economist Arin Dube, whose new book, The Wage Standard, shines a spotlight on the problem of monopsony power in the modern economy. Last week we took on the landmark Ridley Scott movie, Alien, a movie that closed out the 1970's with a bang. This week we're taking on James Cameron and his follow-up to the explosive 1985 smash hit, The Terminator, Aliens. Cameron knew he wanted to make an Alien sequel the moment he first saw the original movie and when the opportunity arose he had to fight tooth and nail, struggling against 20th Century Fox's bad business and legal woes, against apathetic executive who had no interest whatsoever in making another Alien movie, against a production crew that couldn't stand him or his producer Gale Anne Hurd. When all was said and done and the movie hit theaters, Cameron proved to everyone what absolute losers they all were with his clear vision of an explosive action movie that set the pace for the second half of the 80's and set an extremely high bar for action movies to come. Hollywood would never be the same and with the inclusion of the Colonial Marines, Cameron set the entire Alien legacy on a new path. Following the tragedy of the Nostromo disaster Ellen Ripley finds herself waking up 57 years in the future. Her bosses are pissed that she blew up one of their space ships and ban her from flying another mission. An opportunity to get back on a starship comes around when an executive from Weyland Yutani hires her to return to LV-426 to advise a unit of Colonial Marines on a rescue mission of missing colonists who may have come into contact with the same crashed alien ship that doomed her own crew so many years ago. It's time to take the podcast back to the Yautja's in the latest film in the Predator universe! This time though, the Predator's aren't on earth, nor are they hunting any humans, and there isn't a meaningful human to even speak of in this film!  " Predator: Badlands (2025) is a science fiction action film directed by Dan Trachtenberg that shifts the franchise focus by making a young, exiled Yautja (Predator) named Deck the main character. Set on a dangerous, hostile planet, Deck must prove his worth by surviving and hunting, eventually forming an unlikely alliance with a Weyland-Yutani android named Thia" It was always going to be a little tough to follow up the success of Prey which was the AMAZING Predator film that came before this one! BUT, while probably not as good as that movie, this still is not a film that you should sleep on! With Rotten Tomatoes scoring it in the high 80's, I promise that it's at least worth a first watch. While Prey was a fantastic movie, I will say that this film does a better job at opening up the universe to different worlds and to different species. It does well what the latest Alien show did well, which means that these movies don't always necessarily have to be Alien or Predator heavy, they can rely on some other cool monsters too!! The story follows Dek, a "runt" of the Yautja species who is considered weak by his clan's standards. After his older brother, Kwei, is killed by their own father (the clan leader Njohrr) for refusing to execute Dek, Dek is exiled to the "death planet" Genna. To prove his worth and regain his honor, Dek sets out to hunt the Kalisk, a legendary apex predator with near-instant regenerative abilities. Along the way, he forms an unlikely alliance with Thia (Elle Fanning), a damaged Weyland-Yutani android whose team was slaughtered by the Kalisk. Eric-Small             Jordan-Small

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 334: Jeff Cutter Cinematographer Jeff Cutter first collaborated with director Dan Trachtenberg on 10 Cloverfield Lane. Their successful partnership continued on the Predator prequel, Prey, which became Hulu's most-watched streaming premiere. Jeff and Trachtenberg found they had a strong bond over their mutual interests, such as films like Die Hard with “muscular” camerawork. As gamers, the two often use cinematic moments and cutscenes from both videogames and movies as visual references during pre-production meetings. For Predator: Badlands, Tractenberg created a previsualization (previs) of the major sequences. He and Jeff then discussed the overall visual tone and the right approach for the camerawork. A key thought exercise they use is determining how each scene could be shot as a oner, even if the final plan doesn't involve a single-take sequence. Jeff explains, “The exercise just lets us, it really lets you figure out who is the scene about? What is the context and what is the subtext?” He finds that it's a creative way to focus and narrow down the visual choices to make each scene distinct. Jeff built upon the visual foundation he established for Prey. For that film, he and Trachtenberg wanted to subvert audience expectations of a Predator movie, focusing on a naturalistic approach that relied as much as possible on natural daylight, firelight, and moonlight as the primary sources. Defining the Predator: Badlands look by color palette: -The Yautja Planet (Predator Home World): Jeff chose a distinct brown and blue palette accented with warm tones. The look is designed to evoke a sense of harsh but beautiful reality, defined by sandy deserts and stark rock formations. -The Planet Gena: Shot partly on location in New Zealand, this environment called for a greener, more naturalistic look, with a bluer color for nighttime scenes. -The Weyland-Yutani Base: This section connects Predator: Badlands to the larger Alien universe, notably through the Weyland-Yutani corporation and its synthetic main character, Thia (played by Elle Fanning). Inspired by the industrial, ominous atmosphere and moody lighting of films like Aliens and Prometheus, Cutter aimed for an industrial look dominated by cyan, blue, and green tones.
