This week we're in hygge mode, uncovering traumas in our generational home with the host of This Had Oscar Buzz, Joe Reid! One of the breakout Oscar films of the year is Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value, a warm, realist Norwegian film about a difficult but brilliant director (Stellan Skarsgard), his two daughters (Renate Reinsve and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas), and an American actress cast in the auteur's new film (Elle Fanning). All four performances earned Oscar nominations, along with nominations for Best Picture, Best International Feature, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Screenplay. Sentimental Value also highlights a recurring phenomenon in Hollywood, wherein the Academy will pass over a director's breakout film but shower the follow-up with nominations. In Trier's case, his previous film The Worst Person in the World received nominations for Best International Film and Original Screenplay but, in our opinion, deserved many more. We try to break down how and why this happens, whether films about filmmaking have an innate appeal to Oscar voters, how Fanning's star power helps bridge the international gap for voters, and the film itself, including its deft intermingling of artistic expression and sublimated generational trauma. With Joe's guidance, we also check in on some of the Oscar-buzziest films of the year that didn't pan out, check in on the state of the acting category race and some potential upsets, and celebrate The Secret Agent's breakout star Tânia Maria and her new role as Burger King spokeswoman. This week we journey back to 1986 and celebrate the revolutionary release of The Legend of Zelda, created by Shigeru Miyamoto. Inspired by childhood exploration, fantasy literature, and a desire to let players discover secrets on their own, Zelda dropped players into Hyrule with no hand-holding and no instructions beyond a wooden sword and courage. We relive dungeon bosses, secret bombable walls, cryptic old men, and the unforgettable music composed by Koji Kondo. From Aquamentus to Ganon, from Second Quest surprises to Silver Arrow victories, we explore why this game still resonates four decades later, and why sometimes the best adventures are the ones where nobody tells you what to do. Harry Styles deu início à era "Kiss All The Time.
Elle Fanning (A Complete Unknown, The Neon Demon) is an A-list actor who calls herself a "nepo sibling.” When she was just two years old, she played a younger version of her sister Dakota Fanning's character in I Am Sam. But for someone who's been famous for nearly her entire life, there's a bit of mystery surrounding Elle — and that's intentional. During the Toronto International Film Festival last September, she sat down with Tom Power to talk about her latest film, Sentimental Value, which broke applause records when it premiered in Cannes earlier this year.
The nominees were announced on Thursday, on Friday we went to the Broadway theater to see a couple of the films, and today we gave our initial thoughts about what we've seen and what we plan on seeing.Today's root beer is Fieldwork Brewing.Intro and Outro music by Stockmusic331 on Pond5Send us a text
Do you love alien films? We love ‘em. We LOVE ‘EM. Super 8 is a pre-Stranger Things, Spielberg-inspired, 80s-set monster movie hearkening back to an era where kids rode bikes everywhere without fear of death. Directed by J.J. Abram's between his first and second Star Trek films, this movie is a lot of fun but doesn't make a lot of sense? We had a great time discussing several of the child actor performances, particularly a young Elle Fanning. Tune in for more!!

Predator: Badlands Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, & Spoiler Review! Greg Alba & Aaron Alexander dive into Predator: Badlands (2025) — the newest entry in the Predator franchise, following Prey, Predators, The Predator, and the original 1987 classic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. This film returns the series to brutal survival-horror roots with new lore, new Yautja tech, and some of the wildest kills in the franchise. We break down the story, cinematography, creature design, character arcs, and how this fits into the evolving Predator timeline. We discuss the new Badlands setting, the human characters, the Yautja hierarchy, the updated mask/armor tech, callbacks to Naru (Prey), Dutch (Predator 1987), Royce (Predators 2010), Quinn (The Predator 2018), and where Disney/Hulu might be taking this franchise next. We talk about the best scenes, tense standoffs, survival sequences, Predator POV shots, trophy rituals, plasma caster upgrades, cloaking variations, and everything that makes this creature one of cinema's most iconic hunters. Plus — speculation on future Predator movies, crossovers, timeline placement, and how Predator: Badlands affects theories about the Yautja code of honor, interspecies hunts, and the growing expanded universe. After scoring a BAFTA nomination and winning Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for The Worst Person in the World, Renate Reinsve is rightfully zeroing in on her first Academy Award nomination for Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value.Reinsve leads the film, which is one of the year's best, as stage actress Nora, the estranged daughter of acclaimed filmmaker Gustav Borg played by Stellan Skarsgård. When Gustav attempts to reconnect with Nora by offering her the lead role in his new film, she adamantly refuses, so Gustav turns to a Hollywood star instead, Elle Fanning as Rachel Kemp. Now Nora and her sister Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) must navigate their complex family dynamic while their father focuses on what could be his comeback film after a 15-year hiatus.Yes, Reinsve delivers yet another staggeringly impressive performance that's bound to pave the way to a significant awards season run, but as Reinsve explained while at the Collider Ladies Night studio, she didn't always feel so widely embraced. In fact, much of her earlier years involved getting kicked out of places. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Steffan and Gavia share their enthusiastic review of Predator: Badlands, a standalone adventure story that casts a young Predator as the protagonist, teaming up with a perky android (Elle Fanning) to explore an alien planet. Among other topics, this episode covers the excellent casting of breakout star Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, the film's imaginative sci-fi worldbuilding, and director Dan Trachtenberg's genre-savvy approach to action.
In this episode, we place Predator: Badlands within the Predator universe, examining what Dan Trachtenberg and Patrick Aison bring to the table and how Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi anchor the story. We compare the film's approach to the original and newer installments, discuss its tonal shifts, and debate whether it signals a new direction for the franchise. We also discuss the setup, the mood, and the film's bold visual language, plus what to watch for in the action and scares. If you're curious about the tone and teaser moments, this is the episode for you.
Send us a textWelcome back to DMRThe newest installment in the Predator franchise, Predator: Badlands, breaks new ground by placing a Predator, or Yautja, as its central protagonist. The story follows Dek, a young, outcast Yautja on a quest to prove his worth to his warrior clan by hunting the seemingly unkillable apex predator of the treacherous, alien world of Genna, often called "The Death Planet." His perilous journey leads to an unlikely alliance with an advanced Weyland-Yutani Corporation android named Thia, whose own mission on the hostile planet went sideways. Together, the mismatched pair must navigate the lethal environment, evade Weyland-Yutani forces, and confront a terrifying creature that challenges everything Dek has been taught about the honor of the hunt, making for a thrilling sci-fi survival adventure. The film is directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who also helmed the critically acclaimed Prey. The main cast features Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi as the Predator protagonist, Dek, and Elle Fanning in the dual role of the androids Thia and Tessa. As of the latest reports, Predator: Badlands has earned over $162 million at the global box office. Critics have embraced the fresh take, awarding it a Certified Fresh 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences have given it an even higher score of 96%.Reminder to grab your 30 day free Audible trial, link in the show; you'll be helping support DMR
The new movie Sentimental Value is one of the great films about absentee dads who reappear in their kids' lives. Stellan Skarsgård plays a renowned filmmaker preparing his next feature and attempting to reconnect with his estranged daughters (played by Renate Reinsve and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas). And it proves that at the very least, the tension between art and parenthood is complicated. The film is directed by Joachim Trier (The Worst Person in the World) and also stars Elle Fanning. Predator: Badlands is the latest film about an alien race that hunts things using all sorts of space-gadgets. It's told from the Predator's perspective. He's an outcast sent to a hostile planet to hunt down a deadly monster to prove his worth to his people – with Elle Fanning joining as an unlikely ally. It's from the same team that made Prey. And both Predator movies are much better than they had any right to be.Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopcultureTo access bonus episodes and sponsor-free listening for Pop Culture Happy Hour, subscribe to Pop Culture Happy Hour+ at plus.npr.org/happy.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Sean is joined by Chris Ryan to avenge their Yautja brethren on planet Genna and cover Dan Trachtenberg's ‘Predator: Badlands,' starring Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. Before diving in though, they briefly cover a handful of movie news headlines, including the reporting that Ryan Reynolds is remaking the 1970s crime film ‘Thunderbolt and Lightfoot' for Amazon MGM (2:35). Next, they unpack the new 'Predator' legacy sequel and make the case for why it wouldn't work without Fanning's performance, explain why Trachtenberg has a clear eye for titillating action set piece filmmaking, and discuss its big box office success and wonder what it represents at large (7:39). Then, they rank every film in the 'Predator' franchise (43:38). Host: Sean Fennessey Guest: Chris Ryan Producers: Jack Sanders and Bex Donnelly Learn more about your ad choices.
