“Predator: Badlands” is one of those rare movies. You already expect something good after “Prey,” but then you watch this and it turns out to be one of the most satisfying action films of the year. Disney clearly believed in it too, bumping the budget to about 105 million, which is a big jump from “Prey's” 65 million.Dan Trachtenberg is officially three for three. “Prey,” “Killer of Killers,” (also released in2025, on Hulu and awesome) and now “Badlands.” He delivers a confident, fast, beautifully paced movie that never wastes a moment. It also works as a complete standalone. No homework required. You don't need to be a Predator fan or even a sci-fi fan. The movie just pulls you in as a flat-out fun, kickass action experience. The details are great. The runtime is a perfect one hour and forty-seven minutes. The movie lightly introduces Yautja culture without slowing anything down, and the world-building is clear, exciting, and leaves the door open for the future. There's even a subtle crossover nod that never pulls focus.Elle Fanning is incredible. Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi brings a whole new life to the Predator character, making it both terrifying and surprisingly sympathetic. The Kalisk creature is a very fun addition. The invented language is a cool touch. And the villain is genuinely strong without giving anything away. The sound design is excellent, the VFX are top tier, and New Zealand looks unbelievable on screen. Trachtenberg blends real landscapes with massive effects in a way that makes the world feel alive. If there's one small con: you just hope the crossover tease doesn't jinx the success the movie has earned so far.“Badlands” is in theaters now and will likely hit digital platforms in December and stream on Hulu or Disney+ in early 2026.

The 2025 Predator: Badlands movie takes the Predator and Yautja mythology into a new, unforeseen realm. Dek, who's ridiculed, persecuted, and then banished from his family, winds up on a strange planet where he befriends a synthetic organism played by Elle Fanning, known as Thia. She has a punk look with a new wave, futuristic charm. Thia and Dek team up to battle monsters and the greedy, evil Weyland-Yutani Corporation, with Elle playing a second synthetic organism known as Tessa. Susie Glass, makeup designer on Badlands, talks about the concepts behind the characters, early mornings on set, the importance of teamwork, and why caring for the actors is of the utmost importance.-Susie Glass is a New Zealand-born hair and makeup designer based in Auckland who's become known for her versatility and leadership with a portfolio that includes feature films, streaming series, and high-end television. With over 30 years of experience, she's dedicated herself to high-quality storytelling and strong craft skills, meeting a variety of demands across a range of genres and screens. As makeup designer on Predator: Badlands, Susie and her team brought a variety of characters to life, from rough ideas to proof of concept to production, including but not limited to synths Thia and Tessa, portrayed by Elle Fanning. Susie is a three-time New Zealand Film and Television Award winner, and her art, craft, and design reflect a dedication to collaboration and storytelling, and most importantly, an understanding of the unique demands of screen work at the highest levels. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0322007/https://www.instagram.com/susiesparkle67/-Predator: Badlands (2025)https://www.imdb.com/title/tt31227572/-Predator: Killer of Killers (2025)https://www.imdb.com/title/tt36463894/-Prey (2022)https://www.emmys.com/shows/prey-Other movies and shows discussed:Alien: EarthA Rainy Day in New York (2019)

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 334: Jeff Cutter Cinematographer Jeff Cutter first collaborated with director Dan Trachtenberg on 10 Cloverfield Lane. Their successful partnership continued on the Predator prequel, Prey, which became Hulu's most-watched streaming premiere. Jeff and Trachtenberg found they had a strong bond over their mutual interests, such as films like Die Hard with “muscular” camerawork. As gamers, the two often use cinematic moments and cutscenes from both videogames and movies as visual references during pre-production meetings. For Predator: Badlands, Tractenberg created a previsualization (previs) of the major sequences. He and Jeff then discussed the overall visual tone and the right approach for the camerawork. A key thought exercise they use is determining how each scene could be shot as a oner, even if the final plan doesn't involve a single-take sequence. Jeff explains, “The exercise just lets us, it really lets you figure out who is the scene about? What is the context and what is the subtext?” He finds that it's a creative way to focus and narrow down the visual choices to make each scene distinct. Jeff built upon the visual foundation he established for Prey. For that film, he and Trachtenberg wanted to subvert audience expectations of a Predator movie, focusing on a naturalistic approach that relied as much as possible on natural daylight, firelight, and moonlight as the primary sources. Defining the Predator: Badlands look by color palette: -The Yautja Planet (Predator Home World): Jeff chose a distinct brown and blue palette accented with warm tones. The look is designed to evoke a sense of harsh but beautiful reality, defined by sandy deserts and stark rock formations. -The Planet Gena: Shot partly on location in New Zealand, this environment called for a greener, more naturalistic look, with a bluer color for nighttime scenes. -The Weyland-Yutani Base: This section connects Predator: Badlands to the larger Alien universe, notably through the Weyland-Yutani corporation and its synthetic main character, Thia (played by Elle Fanning). Inspired by the industrial, ominous atmosphere and moody lighting of films like Aliens and Prometheus, Cutter aimed for an industrial look dominated by cyan, blue, and green tones. Okay, Ozians. The wait is finally over. The second and final part of the big screen adaptation of the Broadway musical "Wicked" is finally here. In "Wicked: For Good," Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba and Ariana Grande's Glinda use their vocal powers for good, providing a long but fitting climax. Both films combined have a running time of over 5 hours and, yes, it's padded. But thanks to spectacular production values and soaring vocals “Wicked: For Good” provides enough magic to satisfy all the Munchkins out there. In the sweet, low key comic drama "Rental Family," Brendan Fraser plays a struggling American actor in Japan who takes a job pretending to be the dad of a lonely young Japanese girl. While it works on a sentimental level, the whole setup glosses over some troubling ethical lapses. It's well-intentioned but tries a bit too hard to be heartwarming. Speaking of sentimental, the Norwegian comic drama "Sentimental Value" is about a famous filmmaker who tries to reconnect with his estranged daughters by making a comeback film about his family. Stellan Skarsgard, Renate Reinsva and Elle Fanning give terrific performances in an involving tale that will keep you guessing. It manages to live up to its 'sentimental' title without getting sappy. In the mood for a laid-back cinematic tone poem? "Train Dreams" is a beautifully shot Netflix period drama starring Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones about an ongoing series of tragedies that beset a railroad worker and his family in the early 20th Century Pacific Northwest. Tragic and austere, “Train Dreams" is a film to appreciate if not necessarily enjoy.

Predator: Badlands shouldn't be this good. MonteCristo and DoA went in expecting another forgettable franchise sequel and came out calling it the best Predator film since 1987. In this episode of Nerd Legion, the hosts break down how Dan Trachtenberg turned a dormant IP into a bold, emotional, and surprisingly funny sci-fi blockbuster. They discuss the film's unexpected focus on the Predator's culture and honor code, Elle Fanning's dual performance, and how the movie manages to feel both classic and completely new. From the inventive world-building to the subtitled alien language and practical effects, Predator: Badlands proves that simple stories told well still hit the hardest. The conversation also detours into Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, the curse of bloated superhero films, and why Hollywood keeps forgetting how to make tight, self-contained action movies. Elle Fanning is an A-list actor who calls herself a "nepo sister.” When she was just two years old, she appeared in her sister Dakota Fanning's movie “I Am Sam,” playing a younger version of her character, Lucy. But for someone who's been famous for nearly her entire life, there's a bit of mystery surrounding Elle — and that's intentional. During the Toronto International Film Festival in September, she sat down with Tom Power to talk about her latest film, “Sentimental Value,” which broke applause records when it premiered in Cannes earlier this year. She discusses the movie, her start in acting and why she wants to maintain some mystery around who she is.

In a new Forgotten Cinema: Now Showing, the Mikes head out into "Predator: Badlands", the newest entry in the Yautja franchise. Both Mike Butler and Mike Field had a fun time with this one; the action works, the world is engaging, and making a Yautja the protagonist is a bold swing that mostly pays off. Elle Fanning delivers strong performances as both Thia and Tessa, grounding the story even when the movie leans heavily into its video-game vibe. But that's also where the film hits its ceiling. As Butler points out, Badlands often feels like a really well-made video game you'd rather be playing than watching. It's fun, fast, and entertaining in the moment…but pretty forgettable once you leave the theater. And as much as we appreciate the franchise trying new things, the Mikes can't help but wonder if it's finally time to bring back the classic Predator design in full glory.Another solid entry, but not one that will stay in your head—or spine—too long.

Director Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane, Prey) returns to the Universe of the the Predator with an interesting new take.....what if we embarked on a hunting adventure with the Predator itself as the main protagonist?  Actually the Predators are officially know as "Yautja" species and this particular Yautja is the runt of his clan named Dek played by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatan.  After some unexpected family turmoil on his home planet, he is inadvertently whisked away to a very dangerous planet named Genna where he has decided to embark on his first hunt for a very rare creature.  Along the way, he aligns with a synthetic human named Thia (Elle Fanning) whom is more of an expert on this paritcular creature.  And much creature-on-creature violence ensues....though rated PG-13?Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

The first “Predator” movie in 1987 with Arnold Schwarzenegger was a hit, and gave us all our fav Arnold impersonation line, “GET TO THE CHOPPA!” Now we get a new Predator movie, 38 years after that original, called “Predator Badlands.” Is it good enough to “GET TO THE THEATER?!!!” That remains to be seen. The Predator franchise was a Fox product, but now Disney owns Fox and Disney will put its fingerprints on any new Predator entry, including this one. “Predator Badlands” stars Elle Fanning as Thia, who is a synthetic or robot, who is found by Dek, the main predator, played by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. Dek is seen as the weakest by his predator clan, especially his father, and is ferociously driven to take down a big trophy and return with it to show he is a hunter, a killer worthy of the clan. He ends up on a planet to take down that trophy and Thia ends up helping him on his journey. Is it worth a trip to the theater to find out what happens? Check out this episode to find out! “Predator Badlands” also stars Reuben De Jong, Cameron Brown, Ross Duffer, Matt Duffer, Michael Homik, Stefan Grube and Rohinal Nayaran. Support the showFeel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook
