Send us a textCouple of heavy topics the last few weeks, huh? Well, as promised, Saint and Jim keep things a little bit lighter this week by playing one of the internet's favorite games. And it's a two-parter: 1.) Keep one human actor, and recast the rest of the movie with Muppets, or...2.) Replace one human actor with a muppet, and keep the rest of the cast. One of the reasons the Muppets are so beloved is because there's one for every role. And not just in the Muppet-verse, but EVERY role. So if you've ever thought Kermit would make a great Superman, or Miss Piggy would make a fantastic Ellen Ripley, you're not alone. So join the boys as they fall down the rabbit hole of speculating on which Muppets (or entire casts of them) could reliably step in for John Wick, Captain Kirk, The Wizard of Oz, and countless others. Waka-waka-waka!
How to Survive is now on Patreon! Support us at Patreon.com/HowtoSurvivePod to get every episode one week early, plus monthly bonus episodes and more. It's episode 299…My mommy always said there were no monsters. No real ones. But there are. Alien Resurrection (1997) is the concluding chapter in the Alien Quadrilogy, and introduces Ripley 8, a supercharged Xeno-human hybrid of Ellen Ripley, cloned in a lab to act as a genetic vessel to recover the Xenomorphs from the annals of history 200 years after both they and Ripley were obliterated in molten lava at the end of Alien 3. It really is as simple as that. We settle some unfinished business with the lesser-loved film in one of our favourite franchises, talk about the pros and cons of 90s cool girl action, query the logic of bringing a ticking time bomb along as a passenger, and indeed the logic of firing a continent-sized bomb at Earth to save lives, and marvel at the biggest and best shoulder hair ever captured on film. All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: Ellen Ripley died trying to wipe this species out. For all intents and purposes, she succeeded! Next time on the Patreon, we're covering Jacob's Ladder, ahead of our big episode 300 triple bill on the Fear Street trilogy.
This week we are covering a huge sci-fi movie; as we discuss the 1980s classic Aliens! What will we think of Sigourney Weaver return as Ellen Ripley? Tune in to find out as we SHOOT THE FLICK!!!!
The Alien franchise began when sequels were rare and often disappointing. After Alien and Aliens succeeded, a third movie was inevitable. While Alien 3 divided fans, it concluded Ellen Ripley's story—yet it was just the beginning. From Alien 3 to Romulus and the Alien Earth series, the journey has been full of twists and unanswered questions. Why was the Alien 3 director sabotaged? What role did Newt almost play in Alien Resurrection? And what's next for the franchise under Disney? This is the definitive history of Alien like you've never heard it before!Part 1: https://youtu.be/klBk92KsMw4Part 2: https://youtu.be/YkK7E6KFKyc
Video Version: https://youtu.be/klBk92KsMw4 In space no one can hear you scream—but on May 25, 1979, the world heard it loud and clear when Alien burst onto the scene. Shattering the peaceful sci-fi tone of Star Wars and Close Encounters, Ridley Scott's terrifying vision introduced a xenomorph that redefined horror in space. Audiences were stunned, children fled theaters, and a new era of fear began. Ellen Ripley emerged as a groundbreaking female action hero, and the film's staggering success propelled the Alien Franchise into 45 years of shocking sequels, prequels, crossovers with Predator, and now a streaming series—earning nearly $2 billion to date. Over four decades, this legendary saga evolved from chilling creature-feature to deep philosophical study, questioning the nature of androids, artificial intelligence, and creator-creation relationships. From the controversial Alien/Human hybrid to an origin story reshaping its rich lore, the series continues to surprise, inspire, and provoke thought.

Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 1986 cyberpunk sci-fi action masterpiece, Aliens – written & directed by James Cameron; story by James Cameron, Walter Hill, & David Giler; starring Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, Jenette Goldstein, and Carrie Henn.Decades after surviving the Nostromo incident, Ellen Ripley is sent out to re-establish contact with a terraforming colony but finds herself battling the Alien Queen and her offspring.Aliens transformed my childhood and became a sci-fi action landmark that, in my opinion, has never been topped. This film is galvanizing, terrifying, heart-pounding, pulse-pounding, funny, legendarily quotable, and a certifiable stone-cold classic. It's the ultimate litmus test – if you don't like Aliens, than we can't be friends. Period. I have probably seen this film near 100 times and it only gets better with each viewing. I cannot fucking wait to go over this star beast! So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. A freak accident on her lifepod sends xenomorph survivor Ellen Ripley off-course. Plunging to the surface of a long-abandoned prison planet inhabited by the inmates so institutionalised that they refused to leave, Ripley finds herself haunted by the possibility that the monster that has taken so much from her is still with her, and that she is trapped inside of a prison of the creature's making. Some say this might be the scariest game ever made, and I agree, but not for the right reasons. I love the Alien franchise, but I HATE this game. The concept is cool. You play as Ellen Ripley's daughter, and you have to escape a ship full of Aliens, killer robots, and hostile staff. It's a great idea, and the first-person concept works perfectly. But it's also a stealth game, and I fucking HATE stealth games. You spend this whole game hiding in lockers or under desks and after about 6 hours of snoozing and losing, I rage quit as hard as I've ever rage quit a game. Tyler returns to the show this week, and he may not hate this game QUITE as much as I do, but he's not a fan either. We don't think it's a "lazy" game, but we don't think it's fun. Fucking game... And before we talk about that stupid Alien, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if I think we'll ever get another Mega Man game? Would I recommend the Steam Deck to someone that just lost their Switch? And if I could be a fly on the wall and oversee a game's development, what would I pick? After the hellacious shoot that was Alien 3, not to mention disappointing box office returns, it would seem that Brandywine and 20th Century Fox were done with the Alien franchise, and were willing to call it dead in space. But by 1997, Fox still thought it could get more acid blood from the Alien stone. And in order to help with this feat, they would pull from the one region where Alien 3 was successful, Europe, to get director Jean Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen). Fox also had someone who created their show Buffy The Vampire Slayer by the name of Joss Whedon to pen a script that would somehow bring back Ellen Ripley from the dead in order to once again fight the xenomorphs. With Sigourney Weaver once again coming aboard, it would seem the pieces were all in place to make 1997's Alien Resurrection a return to form. But can admitted non Alien fan Jeunet and a pre Avengers Whedon bring the Alien franchise back to glory? Listen in as Garrett is once again joined by Matt and Adam to answer that question. And come back next week, as the boys take a break from the Alien franchise to start a special Halloween themed series. What can it be?

We continue our spooky season franchise run (#Halloweyalnd-utani) with the next stop in the Alien franchise: ALIENS. Writer/Director James Cameron took inspiration from Ridley Scott's horror/sci-fi landmark and expanded both the scope and the possibilities with his own vision of a more action-packed, brisker paced thrill ride. Sigourney Weaver returns as Ellen Ripley, accompanied by a host of gun-stacked space marines, a corporate shill, and an android she cannot bring herself to trust. Cameron's vision opened the storytelling possibilities for this franchise and arguably made it possible to continue with any further sequels at all.Joining us to unpack all of the thematic, aesthetic, and narrative layers of Aliens is Sarah Welch-Larson, author of the excellent book, Becoming Alien (which we highly recommend you check out). Roger Corman takes a swing at an Aliens ripoff only this time it's DINOSAURS! However without a team of bad ass Space Marines and Ellen Ripley, the cast drunkenly stumbles through their lines (literally in one case) and fails in spectacular fashion. One fantastic gory scene, a few dummy falls and off-camera grips throwing body parts at on-camera actors makes the film tolerable. Barely. We also drug Josh from The Evil Deaths back out to help cover this birthday pick for Nate's triumphant return!!!
We've got a new Alien movie in theaters, and as usual... the NHC has opinions! We are both big fans of the Alien franchise, so how does this newest chapter stand up against the other entries in this classic sci-fi horror series? Is it as badass as Ellen Ripley or should it be sucked out of the airlock and doomed to the vacuum of space? We discuss while AJ builds a Lego-style xenomorph! (Sorry, audio viewers.)
GAME OVER, MAN! Alien August continues with Kelsi and Trey's exploration of the iconic sequel to Ridley Scott's 'Alien.' We discuss the action spectacle of 'Aliens,' and Cameron's legacy as an escapist blockbuster filmmaker, as well as how he struggles to totally realize his commentaries of a marine-Vietnam satire, the motherhood ideas, and the power dynamics of Weyland-Yutani via Burke. Regardless of the movie's contradiction, the film's action set pieces make this Sigourney Weaver-led film a memorable one, especially when Ellen Ripley leads an iconic ensemble into battle next to legendary character actors like Bill Paxton. On this week's episode, Sonny Bunch (The Bulwark), Alyssa Rosenberg (The Washington Post), and Peter Suderman (Reason) discussed a strange casting choice in the cons and nons segment before reviewing Alien: Romulus. We also teased this week's bonus episode about the Alien franchise and its shift from a series about Ellen Ripley's efforts to survive to a series more explicitly about the Weyland-Yutani corporation; if you aren't a member, and would like to hear it when it drops on Friday, you can sign up here for 20 percent off the annual price. Yeah, yeah: you'll get all the political newsletters and podcasts! But you really want that hot Weyland-Yutani content, don't you?

For much of August, we will be taking a break to get our proverbial batteries recharged - we'll be back to releasing new episodes before the end of the month. Forty-five years ago, one of The Greatest and Most Influential Science Fiction and Horror films was first released. And now to celebrate the release of the latest entry in the long-running Alien saga - Alien: Romulus - here is a newly remastered review of the original with a few extra features. This was only the second feature to be directed by Sir Ridley Scott near the beginning of what would eventually become an illustrious career including Gladiator, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, and The Martian. The story follows the crew of the Nostromo, a mining ship in outer space in the future which is called to answer a distress call on a nearby planet (LV-426) and once on that planet, they of course get more than they bargained for….eventually meeting the eponymous Alien. :o It stars Tom Skerritt as Dallas, the Captain of this crew along with Sigourney Weaver in her first major role and the one which made her a star…..as Lieutenant Ellen Ripley. Opinions of Alien 3 are certainly divided. Off the back of the terrific first two entries expectations were high for the return of Ellen Ripley, Hicks and Newt but things didn't exactly turn out well for 66% of those characters. Taking things back to the single monster scare of Alien 1979 David Fincher does his best to elevate the story whilst constantly wrestling with the studio with what resulted in a movie he still very much hates to this day. But Alien 3 is certainly not without it's redeeming qualities. Ben and Rob smash the vat of ‘Alien Resurrection' as they birth the latest episode of their series covering every ‘Alien' movie ever! Released in 1997, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, written by Joss Whedon, and starring Sigourney Weaver and Winona Ryder, ‘Alien Resurrection' was a critical and commercial failure, but still represents a significant part of the franchise's history and canon. Ripley 8, a human-alien hybrid clone, is reborn 200 years after the events of Alien 3 aboard the spaceship Auriga, along with space pirates and biology nerds. But what on earth were Fox thinking by hiring a famed French arthouse director and pairing him up with the writer of Buffy The Vampire Slayer? How on earth did they convince Sigourney Weaver to play the sci-fi icon Ellen Ripley for one more film? And will Fede Alvarez save us all when he releases the upcoming Alien ‘Romulus'? Ben and Rob leap into the fire of controversy with ‘Alien 3', the debut feature film of legendary director David Fincher and widely considered a staggeringly disappointing film both critically and commercially. Starring Sigourney Weaver, Charles Dance and Lance Henriksen, ‘Alien 3' follows Ellen Ripley after her Sulaco escape pod crashes on a planet populated by violent male inmates; and violently undoes huge amounts of story work established by James Cameron in his eighties megahit ‘Aliens'. Widely considered a terrible end to Ripley's story, this film is nonetheless Rob's absolute favourite entry in the franchise; MUCH to Ben's utter horror and disgust. So what exactly does this botched sequel offer that can't be found in its superior prequels? How did the most astounding of sci-fi franchises fall so low? Has there ever been quite such an unlikely string of stupid, repeated, wilful, stupid, greedy and above all STUPID mistakes made in the production of a movie?PLUS! On this week's show, we watched 1992's Alien 3 starring Sigourney Weaver, Charles Dance, Charles S. Dutton, Paul McGann, and Lance Henriksen. From director David Fincher, this third installment of the Alien franchise starts immediately following the events of Aliens (1986), where the survivors of LV-426 were headed back to Earth via the Colonial Marine spaceship, The USS Sulaco. Somehow, the Xenomorph queen made it onboard and laid 3 eggs before meeting her doom at the end of the previous film. Following a facehugger attack, our heroes (who are still in hypersleep) are jettisoned to a nearby planetoid; former maximum-security prison facility, Fury-161. After the escape pod crashes and its survivors are recovered, calamity ensues and it's once again up to Ellen Ripley to save everyone; even though it may cost her everything. This is one of those movies with a production hellish enough that it might be more entertaining than the film itself. Be sure to let us know what you think of the movie, and the podcast. Thanks and enjoy!
