It's time to take the podcast back to the Yautja's in the latest film in the Predator universe! This time though, the Predator's aren't on earth, nor are they hunting any humans, and there isn't a meaningful human to even speak of in this film!  " Predator: Badlands (2025) is a science fiction action film directed by Dan Trachtenberg that shifts the franchise focus by making a young, exiled Yautja (Predator) named Deck the main character. Set on a dangerous, hostile planet, Deck must prove his worth by surviving and hunting, eventually forming an unlikely alliance with a Weyland-Yutani android named Thia" It was always going to be a little tough to follow up the success of Prey which was the AMAZING Predator film that came before this one! BUT, while probably not as good as that movie, this still is not a film that you should sleep on! With Rotten Tomatoes scoring it in the high 80's, I promise that it's at least worth a first watch. While Prey was a fantastic movie, I will say that this film does a better job at opening up the universe to different worlds and to different species. It does well what the latest Alien show did well, which means that these movies don't always necessarily have to be Alien or Predator heavy, they can rely on some other cool monsters too!! The story follows Dek, a "runt" of the Yautja species who is considered weak by his clan's standards. After his older brother, Kwei, is killed by their own father (the clan leader Njohrr) for refusing to execute Dek, Dek is exiled to the "death planet" Genna. To prove his worth and regain his honor, Dek sets out to hunt the Kalisk, a legendary apex predator with near-instant regenerative abilities. Predator: Badlands has hit the theater world hard and all the critics love it. What's the catch? Well, there's not a lot going on other than cool gadgets and some jokes. Even though the action packed flick promised a good time, I felt like it was blah ride into a by-the-books Disney-bought IP. “Predator: Badlands” is one of those rare movies. You already expect something good after “Prey,” but then you watch this and it turns out to be one of the most satisfying action films of the year. Disney clearly believed in it too, bumping the budget to about 105 million, which is a big jump from “Prey's” 65 million.Dan Trachtenberg is officially three for three. “Prey,” “Killer of Killers,” (also released in2025, on Hulu and awesome) and now “Badlands.” He delivers a confident, fast, beautifully paced movie that never wastes a moment. It also works as a complete standalone. No homework required. You don't need to be a Predator fan or even a sci-fi fan. The movie just pulls you in as a flat-out fun, kickass action experience.The details are great. The runtime is a perfect one hour and forty-seven minutes. The movie lightly introduces Yautja culture without slowing anything down, and the world-building is clear, exciting, and leaves the door open for the future. There's even a subtle crossover nod that never pulls focus.Elle Fanning is incredible. Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi brings a whole new life to the Predator character, making it both terrifying and surprisingly sympathetic. The Kalisk creature is a very fun addition. The invented language is a cool touch. And the villain is genuinely strong without giving anything away.The sound design is excellent, the VFX are top tier, and New Zealand looks unbelievable on screen. Trachtenberg blends real landscapes with massive effects in a way that makes the world feel alive.If there's one small con: you just hope the crossover tease doesn't jinx the success the movie has earned so far.“Badlands” is in theaters now and will likely hit digital platforms in December and stream on Hulu or Disney+ in early 2026.
