There aren't any numbers here because that would imply a ranking. (Or at the very least, can draw the question about ranking.) Here are this movies that at least one of dug this year: SINNERS Directed by Ryan Coogler Written by Ryan Coogler From IMDB: Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back. When this was announced, I wasn't sure of what to make of it. Surely, a dip into the From Dusk Til Dawn pond wasn't a thing that crossed my mind, but we got a wee bit of that here. Currently on HBO Max WEAPONS Directed by Zach Cregger Written by Zach Cregger From IMDB: When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance. What a great follow-up to Gregger's Barbarian. Not quite as What-The-Fuck-y as Barbarian, but it's not in short supply of nuttiness. Currently on HBO Max PREDATOR: BADLANDS Directed by Dan Trachtenberg Written by Patrick Aison and Dan Trachtenberg From IMDB: A young Predator outcast from his clan finds an unlikely ally on his journey in search of the ultimate adversary. Dan Trachtenberg returns to the Predator franchise for the third time in his career and the second time in 2025. (See below,) This time, telling the story through a young Predator out to prove to his father and his clan he is worthy of his armor. Currently in theaters with Cinema AT Home rentals coming soon. PREDATOR: KILLER of KILLERS Directed by Dan Trachtenberg Written by Micho Robert Rutare From IMDB: Three of the fiercest warriors in human history become prey to the ultimate killer of killers. With only his third feature film of his career, Trachtenberg tells his latest stories from Man versus Predator saga in animation form this time. Great storytelling all around, with a TON of Easter Eggs to be had. Currently on Hulu FRANKENSTEIN Directed by Guillermo del Toro Written by Guillermo del Toro From IMDB: Dr. Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist, brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation. Del Toro makes his way back into the class monster stories with his own take on Mary Shelley's well-worn story of the same name. But he does it only in a way that GDT can. Currently on Netflix SORRY, BABY Directed by Eva Victor Written by Eva Victor From IMDB: After a tragic event, a woman finds herself alone while everyone else continues with their lives as if nothing had happened. *THUNDERBOLTS Directed by Jake Schreier Written by Eric Pearson, Joanna Calo, and Kurt Busiek From IMDB: After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes must go on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts. Currently on Disney + COMPANION Directed by Drew Hancock Written by Drew Hancock From IMDB: A weekend getaway with friends at a remote cabin turns into chaos after it's revealed that one of the guests is not what they seem. Currently on Prime Video and HBO Max Superman Directed by James Gunn Written by James Gunn From IMDB: Superman must reconcile his alien Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as reporter Clark Kent. As the embodiment of truth, justice and the human way he soon finds himself in a world that views these as old-fashioned. Wake Up, Dead Man Directed by Rian Johnson From IMDB: Detective Benoit Blanc teams up with an earnest young priest to investigate a perfectly impossible crime at a small-town church with a dark history. BLACK BAG Directed by Steven Soderbergh Written by David Koepp From IMDB: When intelligence agent Kathryn Woodhouse is suspected of betraying the nation, her husband - also a legendary agent - faces the ultimate test of whether to be loyal to his marriage, or his country. Currently on Prime Video, and Available to Rent on All Rental Platforms, as well as 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. CHAINSAW MAN THE MOVIE - REZE ARC Directed by Tatsuya YoshiharaWritten by Tatsuki Fujimoto and Hiroshi Seko From IMDB: Denji encounters a new romantic interest, Reze, who works at a coffee café. 2025 had a really nice mixed bag of movies we dug, and very little we didn't. “Predator: Badlands” is one of those rare movies. You already expect something good after “Prey,” but then you watch this and it turns out to be one of the most satisfying action films of the year. Disney clearly believed in it too, bumping the budget to about 105 million, which is a big jump from “Prey's” 65 million.Dan Trachtenberg is officially three for three. “Prey,” “Killer of Killers,” (also released in2025, on Hulu and awesome) and now “Badlands.” He delivers a confident, fast, beautifully paced movie that never wastes a moment. It also works as a complete standalone. No homework required. You don't need to be a Predator fan or even a sci-fi fan. The movie just pulls you in as a flat-out fun, kickass action experience. The details are great. The runtime is a perfect one hour and forty-seven minutes. The movie lightly introduces Yautja culture without slowing anything down, and the world-building is clear, exciting, and leaves the door open for the future. There's even a subtle crossover nod that never pulls focus.Elle Fanning is incredible. Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi brings a whole new life to the Predator character, making it both terrifying and surprisingly sympathetic. The Kalisk creature is a very fun addition. The invented language is a cool touch. And the villain is genuinely strong without giving anything away. The sound design is excellent, the VFX are top tier, and New Zealand looks unbelievable on screen. Trachtenberg blends real landscapes with massive effects in a way that makes the world feel alive. If there's one small con: you just hope the crossover tease doesn't jinx the success the movie has earned so far.“Badlands” is in theaters now and will likely hit digital platforms in December and stream on Hulu or Disney+ in early 2026.

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 334: Jeff Cutter Cinematographer Jeff Cutter first collaborated with director Dan Trachtenberg on 10 Cloverfield Lane. Their successful partnership continued on the Predator prequel, Prey, which became Hulu's most-watched streaming premiere. Jeff and Trachtenberg found they had a strong bond over their mutual interests, such as films like Die Hard with “muscular” camerawork. As gamers, the two often use cinematic moments and cutscenes from both videogames and movies as visual references during pre-production meetings. For Predator: Badlands, Tractenberg created a previsualization (previs) of the major sequences. He and Jeff then discussed the overall visual tone and the right approach for the camerawork. A key thought exercise they use is determining how each scene could be shot as a oner, even if the final plan doesn't involve a single-take sequence. Jeff explains, “The exercise just lets us, it really lets you figure out who is the scene about? What is the context and what is the subtext?” He finds that it's a creative way to focus and narrow down the visual choices to make each scene distinct. Jeff built upon the visual foundation he established for Prey. For that film, he and Trachtenberg wanted to subvert audience expectations of a Predator movie, focusing on a naturalistic approach that relied as much as possible on natural daylight, firelight, and moonlight as the primary sources. Defining the Predator: Badlands look by color palette: -The Yautja Planet (Predator Home World): Jeff chose a distinct brown and blue palette accented with warm tones. The look is designed to evoke a sense of harsh but beautiful reality, defined by sandy deserts and stark rock formations. -The Planet Gena: Shot partly on location in New Zealand, this environment called for a greener, more naturalistic look, with a bluer color for nighttime scenes. -The Weyland-Yutani Base: This section connects Predator: Badlands to the larger Alien universe, notably through the Weyland-Yutani corporation and its synthetic main character, Thia (played by Elle Fanning). Inspired by the industrial, ominous atmosphere and moody lighting of films like Aliens and Prometheus, Cutter aimed for an industrial look dominated by cyan, blue, and green tones. To quote Donato's Predator: Badlands review: "It's official: Dan Trachtenberg is the Yautja whisperer." Between Monagle's love of the Alien universe and Donato's incessant quoting of Predator, the Matts dedicated this week's Uncertified episode to gushing about Trachtenberg's latest Yautja adventure. Does the heavy use of digital animation hold up? Can the inclusion of Weyland-Yutani stay in the background enough not to dominate a Predator film? All those questions and more are answered by the Matts, who once again find common ground on a new release.
Dan Trachtenberg has emerged as the guy flying the ship the last few years for the Predator franchise, after knocking it out of the park earlier this year with Killer of Killers, can Trachtenberg chart an even better course with the first theatrical adventure in 7 years? | Predator Badlands | A young, outcast Predator named Dek who, to prove his worth to his clan, travels to a dangerous planet to hunt a legendary creature. Along the way, he teams up with an unlikely ally, a synthetic humanoid named Thia (played by Elle Fanning), and together they navigate a treacherous world and confront their own personal family dramas.

Prey proves that the Predator concept doesn't need constant escalation or lore expansion to be effective—it just needs focus, craft, and the courage to tell a story from a new point of view. It's the best the franchise has been since the original 1987 film, and a thrilling reminder that even well-worn monsters can still surprise us.
On February 26, 2025, Michelle Trachtenberg – the beloved actress whose memorable roles in Harriet the Spy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Gossip Girl made her a standout talent of her generation – passed away from complications related to diabetes at the age of 39. Trachtenberg's passing was a heartbreaking loss to those who knew and admired her, following years of struggle with mental illness and the pressures of growing up in the spotlight, but her legacy remains as a gifted performer who left a lasting impact on both television and film. With his amazing new book The Twilight of Bohemia: Westbeth and the Last Artists in New York (Black Sparrow Press), Peter Trachtenberg explores the 50+ years of history for Westbeth Artists Housing in the far West Village, the role of the arts in New York City, and the ways we build & sustain community. We get into his long-term history with Westbeth, how this book's was born from an essay about the suicide of his friend and Westbeth resident Gay Milius, how Westbeth managed to survive a series of financial crises over the decades before finding a sustainable model, and how architect Richard Meier repurposed the Bell Labs complex into affordable artists' housing in the 1960s. We talk about Westbeth's requirement that residents be professional artists and what that came to mean over the years (esp. when some residents' productivity diminished), what it's like to raise families in Westbeth, and how the community handled generational change. We also discuss how Westbeth reflects New York back on itself, how Vin Diesel's vandalism as a kid growing up in Westbeth led to his acting career, how the Village's Halloween parade originated there, how I stumbled across Westbeth in 2017 during — what else? — a podcast, how we build artistic communities when we don't have geographic proximity, whether there's a secret radioactive room left over from the Bell Labs years (!), and more. Episode 143: Recovery in the News In this episode of Recovery in the Middle Ages, we run down the latest news from the world of recovery, giving our take on the headlines that matter to those on the sober path. We discuss the tragic passing of Melissa Trachtenberg, which may have been related to alcoholic liver disease. Then, we discuss The New York Times' long-overdue admission that red wine is not, in fact, the health elixir it was once hyped up to be—turns out, the “glass of wine a day” myth doesn't hold up under scrutiny. Finally, we highlight a success story worth celebrating: Blac Chyna marks two years of sobriety, proving that transformation is possible and that the journey to recovery is as much about growth and self-discovery as it is about abstaining from booze. If you would like to give us feedback on how were doing follow us at: https://discord.gg/cd6sNqvnav https://beacons.ai/senornerdpodcast Prey is a 2022 American science fiction film in the Predator franchise. It serves as a prequel to previous films, being set in the Northern Great Plains in 1719. The film is directed by Dan Trachtenberg and written by Patrick Aison. It stars Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Dane DiLiegro, Michelle Thrush, Stormee Kipp, Julian Black Antelope, and Bennett Taylor. The story revolves around a young Comanche woman, Naru, who is striving to prove herself as a hunter. She finds herself having to protect her people from a vicious, humanoid alien that hunts humans for sport, as well as from French fur traders who are destroying the buffalo they rely on for survival. Development of the film began during the production of The Predator (2018), when producer John Davis was approached by Trachtenberg and Aison, with a concept that they had been developing since 2016. In late 2020, the film's title was revealed to be the codename for the fifth installment in the franchise. Filming took place around Calgary during the summer of 2021, with most of the film being filmed in English, with some sequences being shot in Comanche and French as well. A full Comanche language dub was provided for the film, with the cast reprising their roles, thus making it the first feature film to do so. Prey premiered at San Diego Comic-Con on July 21, 2022, and was released by 20th Century Studios as a Hulu original film in the United States and on Disney+ and Star internationally on August 5. The film received positive reviews from critics. In 1719 in the Great Plains, Naru, a young Comanche woman trained as a healer, dreams of becoming a great hunter like her brother Taabe. While tracking deer she witnesses strange lights in the sky, which she believes to be a Thunderbird and a sign she is ready to become a hunter, but is actually the dropship for an alien hunter. Later Puhi, a warrior of the tribe, is taken by a cougar. Naru accompanies the search party, which tracks and finds Puhi near death. She tends Puhi's wounds and gives him an herb called orange totsiyaa, which lowers his body temperature to slow his bleeding. Naru returns with the search party and Puhi while Taabe stays behind to hunt the cougar. Finding large, unusual tracks and a skinned rattlesnake, Naru circles back with Paake and reunites with Taabe. The three set a trap for the cougar but it kills Paake. Plot[edit]

Send us a textIn the first of a new series called "What Is Zionism?" Professor Barry Trachtenberg talks to Margot Patterson about the origins of Zionism in the late 1800s. By the turn of the 20th century, Jews living in Eastern Europe had experienced two decades of rising anti-Semitism. Some sought to change the conditions of the societies they lived in; others responded to emerging nationalism in Europe by developing ideologies of Jewish nationalism. Unlike other European peoples, however, Jews lacked territory. Those seeking a place where Jews could gather and establish a state eventually fixed on Palestine, where their quest for land and sovreignty almost immediately brought them into conflict with the people living there. Trachtenberg holds the Rubin Presidential Chair in Jewish History at Wake Forest University, where he teaches courses on the history of Zionism
Do you prefer multistory episodes, single story episodes, or a mix? Let us know! In this episode of Discover Daily, host Sienna explores the fascinating world of the Trachtenberg system, a unique method of rapid mental calculation developed by Russian engineer Jakow Trachtenberg during his imprisonment in Nazi concentration camps. This innovative approach to arithmetic eliminates the need for multiplication tables, relying instead on a set of readily memorized operations that allow users to perform lightning-fast computations by "reading" numbers and applying logical rules.Sienna delves into the remarkable impacts of the Trachtenberg system, particularly in education, where children who had struggled with traditional math have shown significant improvements in both skills and confidence. She also examines the cognitive benefits of the system, including enhanced memory capacity, visual memory, and concentration. The episode features a step-by-step walkthrough of a complex example using the Trachtenberg technique for multiplying two-digit numbers by 11, making early entry into the method accessible.Join Sienna as she uncovers the inspiring story behind the Trachtenberg system and explores how this innovative approach to mental math can unlock our mental potential and open up new possibilities. In this episode, HousingWire president Diego Sanchez interviews Marc Trachtenberg, CEO of Silk Title Co. They explore the dominance of the "Big Four" in the title market and how Silk Title's model complements rather than competes with them. Marc also shares insights from the recent RealEdge conference and discusses adapting to new technologies, fostering collaboration, and educating consumers about the title process. Don't miss Marc at the upcoming IMB Summit on October 1 in Dallas, where he'll delve into Silk Title's vision for the future of the title industry. Here's what you'll learn: Collaboration, rather than competition within the industry can lead to better outcomes for everyone. Diverse perspectives and consumer education are crucial for the industry's success. There is a significant lack of consumer education regarding the title process and its costs, and that needs to change. The title industry needs to redefine its approach to remain relevant in a changing market. Understanding risk and title alternatives is essential for both consumers and industry professionals.
