For the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's history, the studio and the comic publishing arm of the company are collaborating to create a tie-in comic for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. While there have been official tie-in comics to the films before, it was a case of the comics working within the confines of what was already planned and established for the films, not a true collaboration from the ground up. To that end, Marvel has pulled out all the stops by bringing talent the likes of writer Matt Fraction, who was allowed to visit the films set along with other creators working on the comic. The comic, a one-shot that releases July 2, ahead of the film's July 25 release, is said to be designed to act as media that exists within the film's continuity.20th Century Studios released the teaser trailer for Predator: Badlands, the highly anticipated sequel to Dan Trachtenberg's Prey. The trailer, while brief at just over a minute, is jampacked with footage that includes vistas, locales, creatures and technology never seen within the franchise, including two mysterious characters: one being what seems to a Predator protagonist and Elle Fanning in an enigmatic, humanoid role who begs more questions than answers.A couple weeks ago we discussed the casting of several key figures in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series, including John Lithgow as Hogwarts Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. Now, while speaking the London Times last week, the actor revealed that he was not prepared for the resulting public outcries and backlash in response to his participation - given series creator J.K. Rowling's involvement; as Rowling's public transphobic stance and comments in recent years have been the subject of controversy. Elsewhere, David Tennant, who played Barty Crouch in the films, offered his appropriately timed insights on the author while receiving an allyship award at the British LGBT Awards, saying, “We shouldn't live in a world where that is worth remarking on — I don't wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up.” The lines between the worlds of make believe and our real one are often blurry and the decision to separate art from a problematic artist is a complicated and personal one. The review embargo has lifted on Thunderbolts* and from 107 total reviews, the film currently has a certified fresh rating of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. The upcoming prequel Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping has cast Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy and Whitney Peak as his girlfriend, Lenore Dove Baird. Mckenna Grace will play District 12 tribute Maysilee Donner, Jesse Plemons will portray a young Plutarch Heavensbee, and the film is set for release on November 20, 2026.Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Jenna Ortega-led series Wednesday. The series will follow a split release schedule with part 1 dropping on August 6, and part 2 to follow on September 3.Sydney Sweeney is set to star in a film adaptation of hit video game “Split Fiction” with Jon M. Chu directing, Variety has learned. The script for the movie is being written by “Deadpool & Wolverine” screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.Emma Mackey has been cast as the White Witch in Narnia, Greta Gerwig's adaptation of C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia fantasy novels.Over the weekend, “Minecraft” collected $37.8 million overseas and $60.5 million worldwide in its fourth weekend of release. Meanwhile, “Sinners” added $13.5 million internationally and $58.5 million globally in its second week. For the second consecutive weekend, Warner has nabbed the No. 1 and 2 spots on international, domestic and global box office charts.

Predator: Badlands debuts its first Teaser Trailer for the upcoming sci-fi action film directed by Dan Trachtenberg (Prey, 10 Cloverfield Lane) that flips the traditional Predator tale by making the alien hunter its own hero. Set on a hostile, remote world, the story follows a young Predator—exiled from his clan for unknown transgressions—who must survive both against the environment and a far more dangerous creature. Stranded and desperate, he forms an uneasy alliance with Thia (Elle Fanning), a human whose resourcefulness proves vital to their mutual survival. Together, they embark on a perilous journey across unforgiving landscapes in search of the ultimate adversary that will restore the Predator's honor—or doom them both in the process... sounds pretty badass if you ask us!! Hollywood cinema has often featured Native American men in Westerns as brutal, hypermasculine barbarian warriors, and Native American women as hyper-sexualised or a quiet subservient. They'd also often be portrayed by white actors in brownface. How remarkable that a Predator prequel aimed to set this injustice right?Despite not being of Native American descent, director Dan Trachtenberg and writer Patrick Aison knew that they needed to make this movie as authentic as possible to the 1700s in the Great Plains, and not only did they get the advice of the Native communities, they involved them in every aspect of making Prey, and this started with producer Jhane Myers - the VIP of this movie.Myers was instrumental on the authenticity and representation of the Comanche in Prey, as well as ensuring that a variety of roles, both in front and behind the camera, were First Nations people, with Native interns in the crew at all levels, as well as first time Native actors, led by an impeccable lead performance by Amber Midthunder. But the greatest contributions came from community and tribal elders, who advised not only on language and specific tribal culture, including weapons, customs, face painting and regalia. Comanche is classified as a severely endangered world language, which makes it even more incredible that we got a Comanche dub of this movie. It's more important than ever to preserve this language.Prey is as authentic to Comanche tradition as it can be, and it's the best Predator movie by far. Yeah, I said what I said. I would love to hear your thoughts on Prey (2022) !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! I won the Best Movie Podcast in the inaugural Ear Worthy Independent Podcast Awards recently. Deadline broke the news that Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy is being courted as Marvel Studios' first choice to direct the franchise's next Avengers movie. Though so much isn't known about the future of the Avengers due to Marvel's internal shake-up reordering their release schedule of shows and movies as well as the Jonathan Majors legal issues and consequential firing, Deadline did say Levy was given a script from writer Michael Waldron. It is also rumored that more than 60 Marvel characters could appear. Captain America: Brave New World began reshoots in Atlanta last week, with new cast member Giancarlo Esposito joining the call sheet for the 22 days of additional photography. Unofficial, leaked set photos confirmed the actor's involvement after he heavily hinted at an unexpected role within the MCU. While we still have no word on which character Esposito portrays, all signs point to the role being, quote, ‘villainous' in nature. This week treated us to a batch of brand-spanking new, high-profile trailers, Let's break down our thoughts: Venom 3 Moana 2 Alien: Romulus J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Middle Earth works have seen their fair share of adaptations, but one character that has long been absent from the proceedings to the chagrin of many readers is The Fellowship of the Ring's Tom Bombadil. That all changes as Amazon's Rings of Power Season 2 is set to feature the character, with English actor Rory Kinnear portraying the enigmatic forest dweller. This was revealed in a Vanity Fair exclusive. Tolkien himself was often hazy on the character, who has been described as older than old, and more of an observer than active participant in the many conflicts of Middle Earth. We couldn't have expected to carve out a collectable popcorn bucket niche when we started this show, but here we are: Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds unveiled a cheeky ad teasing a somewhat risqué popcorn bucket for Marvel's upcoming superhero team-up. The bucket, shaped like a Wolverine head with a comically wide-open mouth, aligns with Kevin Feige's promise of a “crude and rude” design. Two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali is in talks to join Scarlett Johansson in the upcoming Jurassic movie. Chris Hemsworth is in talks to lead a Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover sequel to Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, with no release date yet. Jeremy Renner joins the cast of Rian Johnson's Knives Out 3, his first role since his early 2023 snowplow accident, alongside Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, Mila Kunis, Josh O'Connor, and Cailee Spaeny. (Kaylee Spain-ee) In addition to producing the It prequel series for Max currently titled Welcome to Derry, Bill Skarsgard will also return to reprise his role as Pennywise the Clown from It and It Chapter 2. In a Variety Actors on Actors interview with Jodie Foster, Robert Downey, Jr. said the following when asked if he would return to Tony Stark: “It's the character that is most like me and I've become surprisingly open minded to the idea.” Warner Bros. Television is in the early stages of developing a 300 TV series prequel, with Zack Snyder in talks to direct and produce. Elle Fanning is in talks to star in Badlands, a new Predator universe movie directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who revamped the franchise with Prey. New Star Wars show The Acolyte is premiering right now, and Marvel Comics announced the wookiee Jedi character, Kelnacca, will be getting a one-shot comic book written by Cavan Scott. Netflix is currently developing an animated series based on the popular video game Minecraft alongside Mojang Studios, the Swedish developer of the game. MCU and Lost star Evangeline Lilly announced on her Instagram that she is retiring from acting. Peaky Blinders fans can get excited as a film starring Cillian Murphy is in the pipeline. Plot details and more casting isn't known, but Murphy will also co-produce the film, which will land on Netflix.

Alec Gillis grew up in Orange County, California within sight of the Disneyland fireworks show. As a kid he roamed the mean streets of Main Street Disneyland, It was here he gained a lifelong appreciation of animatronics, but it was in the local movie theatres that he fell in love with genre films. At age 20 Gillis began working for Roger Corman on a film called BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, along with James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd. After working for various Makeup Effects luminaries such as Tom Savini and Greg Cannom, Gillis was recommended by James Cameron to Stan Winston, where Gillis worked on effects for classic films such as ALIENS and PREDATOR. In 1988 he co-founded Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. (ADI) with Tom Woodruff, Jr. TREMORS was the company's first feature, and the film's giant subterranean worms gained Gillis notoriety. The duo's work garnered Oscar nominations for STARSHIP TROOPERS, ALIEN 3 and won for DEATH BECOMES HER. Gillis has won numerous other awards such as BAFTAs and SATURNs. His work has been seen in BRIGHT, IT 1 and 2, and currently the Disney/Fox Predator feature PREY, directed by Dan Trachtenberg. Earlier this month, “Prey,” the latest film in the Predator franchise, premiered on Hulu. The film centers on characters who are part of the Comanche Nation as they fight off threats from both the Predator as well as a group of French settlers. According to the film's producer, 20th Century Studios, “Prey” had the biggest ever debut of any movie or TV show on Hulu when it premiered earlier this month. Although the movie was directed and co-written by Dan Trachtenberg, who is white, Trachtenberg brought in co-producer Jhane Myers, who is Blackfeet and Comanche, to make sure that Native people were represented behind the scenes as well as in front of the camera. Joey Clift, comedian, staff writer and supervising producer for Netflix's “Spirit Rangers,” and member of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe, has been an outspoken advocate for Native representation in Hollywood for years. He joined The Takeaway to discuss the significance of "Prey" and how it fits into the current movement around Native representation in the entertainment industry.

Prey takes the Predator franchise back to it's roots by focusing on a mano a mano fight to the death. However, what this film does even better than the original is create a compelling protagonist with a clear character arc. Synopsis Prey is set in 1719 in the Comanche nation. Our protagonist, Naru is a young woman that wants to prove herself as a capable hunter by going through kühtaamia, a coming of age hunt between a Comanche and an animal Predator. As she struggles to prove herself, she discovers through her tracking skills that mountain lions and bears (oh my) aren't the only big game in the land. An alien Predator has been dropped off to complete a similar hunt and inevitably clashes with Naru (and her little dog too). https://youtu.be/wZ7LytagKlc Review of Prey Prey is the fifth in the franchise of standalone Predator movies. 7th if you include the AVP movies, but let's not talk about those. So it's taken 3 movies and 35 years to get back to the basic premise of a primarily mano a mano fight between an outmatched human protagonist and the Predator in the wilderness. It's almost like someone identified what worked in the original movie, and… used that information to make a good movie. Although very similar in plot, this isn't a direct remake. Writers Patrick Aison and Dan Trachtenberg made some very interesting changes in the setup that further accentuate what works in the original. Instead of a roided up Arnold, we get a diminutive, yet ferocious Naru. Instead of a modern setting with giant guns and explosives, Naru only has use of primitive weapons. Everything works with this film. Mostly it comes down to the writers and director keeping it simple. They use the tried and true hero's journey template and add enough set piece action sequences at the right times in the story to maintain interest. The story never strays far from the perspective of the protagonist, so it feels intimate and gives the audience one person to really root for. The writing, directing, and acting is all great. There is very little to distract from the enjoying the film. If you are a fan of the original Predator, you will really enjoy this film, but not feel pandered to. We've got Predator on our minds this week on the Empire Podcast. Which makes a change. Not only do we review Dan Trachtenberg's Prey, his prequel to John McTiernan's 1987 action classic, but Chris Hewitt sits down with that film's star, Amber Midthunder, for a fun interview in which they discuss how Amber, whose parents are an actor and a casting director, wasn't necessarily fated to become an actor, about Prey's commitment to Comanche traditions, going to craft services with a Predator, and using Brazilian jiu jitsu to take out a bunch of feral children. Chris also has a sit-down with the legendary John McTiernan, who came into London last week for The London Action Fest, and while they only talk about Predator a bit, there's plenty of Die Hard and The Hunt For Red October chat to keep you action aficionados happy. Back in the pod booth, Helen O'Hara hosts this week, due to Chris being locked in mortal combat with an alien hunter (or in LA for a set visit; one of the two), and she's joined by James Dyer and Ben Travis to discuss movies which would benefit from gender-flipping their lead from a man to a woman (in the wake of the England Women's team's triumph at the Euros), review Prey, Bullet Train and Luck, and dive deep into the week's movie news, including the Batgirl debacle. Enjoy.

The topic is The Raft, with a focus on both the short story and its adaptation in Creepshow 2. It's a fun little ditty about some horny college friends who take a swim where they're not supposed to and are picked off by a malevolent and very hungry oil slick in the water.

The 13th Warrior. A Muslim ambassador exiled from his homeland, Ahmad ibn Fadlan (Antonio Banderas) finds himself in the company of Vikings. While the behavior of the Norsemen initially offends ibn Fadlan, the more cultured outsider grows to respect the tough, if uncouth, warriors. During their travels together, ibn Fadlan and the Vikings get word of an evil presence closing in, and they must fight the frightening and formidable force, which was previously thought to exist only in legend. The Arab poet was real. The movie is based on his writings and part of the Beowulf myth. The Viking prayer is real too.
