This Predator prequel has nothing to do with previous films outside a couple nods and a Predator showing up, but it's a fresh take on the format that is overcoming the stink of its previous entry. Taking the film back to the 18th century and giving the film a female lead are a great start, while director Dan Trachtenberg gets to show off his action chops outside of a bunker. Join the AMPM VIDEO crew as they talk about Prey a 2022 American science fiction action horror film based on the Predator franchise. It is the fifth installment and is a prequel to the first four films, being set in the Northern Great Plains in North America in 1719. The film is directed by Dan Trachtenberg and written by Patrick Aison. It stars Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Michelle Thrush, Stormee Kipp, Julian Black Antelope, Bennett Taylor, and Dane DiLiegro. The story revolves around Naru, a skilled Comanche warrior, who is striving to prove herself as a hunter. She finds herself having to protect her people from a vicious, humanoid alien that hunts humans for sport, as well as from French fur traders who are attacking her people and destroying the Buffalo they rely on for survival. Development of the film began during the production of The Predator (2018), when producer John Davis was approached by Trachtenberg and Aison, with a concept that they had been developing since 2016. In late-2020, the film's title was revealed to be the codename for the fifth installment in the franchise. Filming took place around Calgary during summer 2021, with the entire film shot in English and some sequences shot in Comanche as well. The remaining sequences were dubbed into Comanche by the cast, reprising their roles. In this GIANT-SIZE episode we discuss two movies released in July that we've been wanting to talk about on our show since we watched them both. SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't watched Nope, or Prey as of yet - you might want to wait before pressing PLAY on this 2HR+ episode, because we dive deep. This week you'll hear us talk about Jordan Peele, his previous movies "Get Out", "Us" and whether we think he's a cinematic genius - or a flash in the pan. (Spoiler alert: genius) We go over the acting chops, chemistry, and incredible character development of Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Brandon Perea, Michael Wincott, and Steven Yeun. Plus - what's up with that strange/eerie monkey sub-plot? And of course...we discuss...the ship. But wait - there's more! After re-watching the original Predator and Predator II, Woody feels like an expert on where the newest in the franchise, Dan Trachtenberg's Prey, stacks up. We talk about the incredible Amber Midthunder (coolest name in Hollywood), Dakota Beavers, and the amazing #girlpower trope that felt incredibly authentic. We dive into the amazing Thunderbird Native American lore, briefly mentioned in the beginning of the movie, and our theories. As well as all the easter eggs and tributes sprinkled throughout the movie as a nod to the ones that came before it. We recorded this episode several weeks ago and tucked it away, along with a few others that we have saved, to be exclusive for our Patreon subscribers. But, we thought releasing this GIANT-SIZE episode as a way to announce the upcoming launch of our Patreon would be the perfect kick off! So, PRESS PLAY and hear what we rank these movies, and all the big announcements we have for the exciting things coming up for That Would Be Rad. The Predator has returned!  Well an earlier version of the fierce hunter from another planet…..and THIS time, he has visited America's Great Plains more than 300 years ago.  So is this a prequel to the 1987 sci-fi action thriller starring Arnold Schwarzenegger?  Well sort of....This time, the story focuses on Naru (Amber Midthunder), a young member of the Comanche Nation who fancies herself a hunter even though she is expected to work more as a gatherer or healer.  So she's off on the hunt to prove herself….and guess who she runs into??  Eventually, more of her fellow tribesman get involved along with a group of French fur trappers.....and bloodshed ensues.  Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) directed this “Hulu Original” and let's see how it compares to the original. Host: Geoff Gershon  Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

What "Prey" Gets Right About Native Representation

Earlier this month, “Prey,” the latest film in the Predator franchise, premiered on Hulu. The film centers on characters who are part of the Comanche Nation as they fight off threats from both the Predator as well as a group of French settlers. According to the film's producer, 20th Century Studios, “Prey” had the biggest ever debut of any movie or TV show on Hulu when it premiered earlier this month. Although the movie was directed and co-written by Dan Trachtenberg, who is white, Trachtenberg brought in co-producer Jhane Myers, who is Blackfeet and Comanche, to make sure that Native people were represented behind the scenes as well as in front of the camera. Joey Clift, comedian, staff writer and supervising producer for Netflix's “Spirit Rangers,” and member of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe, has been an outspoken advocate for Native representation in Hollywood for years. He joined The Takeaway to discuss the significance of "Prey" and how it fits into the current movement around Native representation in the entertainment industry.
