4th Step – On Obedience The Ladder of Divine Ascent was written primarily for monks. However, the words of Saint John Climacus at the beginning of the first chapter indicate that his intention is to address every person who longs for salvation. He says: “The gates of eternal life are open to all. The goal of our life is to follow Christ and to become like Him in His divine love.”

Facial trauma is common in emergency medicine, but the biggest pitfalls are often not the fractures themselves—they're the threatened airway, vision-threatening ocular injuries, missed septal hematomas, and subtle soft tissue injuries hiding beneath the skin. Which facial fracture is most likely to cause delayed airway obstruction? Why does the physical examination often matter more than the CT scan? Which injuries require urgent consultation or transfer, and which can safely go home? In this episode of EM Cases, Anton is joined by Dr. Jeff Fialkov and Dr. Andrew Petrosoniak for a practical, top-down approach to facial trauma covering airway, bleeding, vision-threatening injuries, fracture assessment, soft tissue injuries, and disposition. This is Part 12 in a series celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Harvard University Press' 1985 publication of Richard A. Epstein's "Takings: Private Property and the Power of Eminent Domain." We continue our celebration of this anniversary with a fair use and transformative reading, taking a close look at ch. 7 continuing in the same section which Richard calls ""Takings Prima Facia," which takes a look at selling Eagle feathers when mere possession is a crime, as well as rights to disposition in leasehold renewals. He titles chapter 7, "Rights of Disposition and Contract" because he's taking a look at what the judiciary often misses in the panoply of takings reached by the Eminent Domain Clause and the American constitutional order, how these things interact and hang together, ensconced as it is in the purpose of the Constitution. That moral purpose is the protection of individual liberty against claims by a simple majority in a democracy, or judicial or executive fiat, or by the government in any other way in a taking of private property. It's also a good reflection on nature of property per se, whether public or private. For governments are owners as well as takers of property. Today we discuss his chapter 7 from pp. 74 to the top of p. 80. At the end, this episode concludes with a Chaplain's corner, with a reading of Psalm 142 in the KJV and January 31st in Streams in the Desert (Cowman Publications, Lost Feliz Station Lost Angeles, Calif. 1925 original non-woke edition). Excellent stuff here. Excellent. Every college student should read this book. It's a superb introduction to the political philosophy of the American regime. Praise the Lord. We'd like to thank Harvard University Press for making this material available and Richard Epstein for writing it. Make sure you buy the book and follow along. It's very important for you to have your own copy on your own bookshelf, and to begin to master this material. Support your local book dealer. See if they have a copy of it, or if they'd mind keeping an eye out for you. I always encourage buying physical books, objects you can have, hold, cherish, learn from, display on your bookshelf as a topic of conversation, things you can pass on to the next generation with your notes in them, things that do not depend upon electricity. Toward that end: Go to Harvard University Press for more selections available for purchase. Please support the publisher and your local booksellers. Vik and I sat down to talk through 11th now that we've got most of the rules, even if points are still the missing piece. Dave is about 35 games in, while Vik is coming at it from the “read the rules, built lists, haven't played yet” angle.Short version: we're pretty positive. Not in a “GW nailed everything” way, but this is a much stronger launch state than we expected. It feels like there's already a real game here.1. Scoring feels very differentThe old 10th edition plan of “hold my expansion, deny yours, win on primary” doesn't really work the same way anymore.Because missions are asymmetric, throwing a unit away to deny points can also give your opponent points somewhere else. Games seem higher scoring overall, and pushing big differential feels harder unless you properly run someone over.2. Dispositions are a big win gameplay wiseThe disposition system feels like one of the best parts of the edition. It gives list building more texture again.Purge pushes you toward killing and aggression. Recon feels the most like normal 40k. Priority Assets seems solid for singles. Disruption is the one we're least sold on right now, because it often asks you to kill something and do actions, which can get awkward. That said, we don't think you should pick a bad detachment just because it has a better disposition. The detachment is still the main thing, but disposition definitely changes how you build the last part of your list.3. Hidden is better than expected (now that is 12" - go to ground)At first, 15" hidden didn't sound that impactful. But with Go to Ground bringing it to 12", it matters a lot more.It changes how units stage, how objectives are held, and how you force your opponent to come closer before they can interact. That's good.It doesn't solve everything though. Slow six-inch melee infantry still looks rough unless it has real delivery, advance and charge, miracle dice, ingress, transports, or some other trick.Move blocking has changed shapeOld-style move blocking is much weaker. You can't just put five models an inch in front of a tank and expect it to be stuck forever. Vehicles and monsters moving through infantry is a good change overall. But move blocking isn't gone. It's now more about:using 2" engagement range properlyblocking where models can enddenying access to terraintagging things awkwardlyusing the fight phase and pivot wellTwo-inch engagement range feels huge, and good players are going to get a lot out of it.Vehicles and transportsVehicles are better, but we don't think the edition is just “fast gun wins.” Cover matters, minus one to hit is strong, hidden matters, and shooting without ignore cover can feel rough.Transports are one of the areas we're less positive on. Base-to-base disembarking is a massive change (when destroyed), and losing a transport in the wrong place can expose the unit inside immediately. Drukhari especially feel like they need to relearn a lot of old staging patterns.OverallWe're genuinely impressed. There are still worries around slow melee, map balance, transports, and whatever points end up doing, but the foundation feels strong. Most factions seem to have something playable, games feel less deterministic, list building is more interesting, and universal terrain is a huge win.For a launch state, this is probably the best 40k has felt in a long time.
Playing some games of 11th has us very excited but it hasn’t come without some learning. The way we build lists is changing a little bit. It’s not just about … Read More

Host: Steve Macchia, Guest: Matt Scott, Fyfe Blair "What are the 'pillows' that allow your soul to finally rest in God?" – Steve Macchia In this episode of the Discerning Leader Podcast, Steve Machia is joined by Matt Scott and Fyfe Blair for a rich and reflective conversation on silence and solitude. Together, they explore why these ancient practices feel so difficult in a distracted, fast-paced world—and why they remain essential for the health of our souls. Drawing from Scripture, lived experience, and the wisdom of the Desert Fathers, this episode invites you to move beyond surface-level quiet into a deeper stillness of heart. You'll discover how silence and solitude are not ends in themselves, but pathways into a life rooted in God's presence—a life marked by what Fife calls a "cadence of grace." If your soul feels hurried, noisy, or stretched thin, this conversation offers a gentle but honest invitation: slow down, make space, and learn again how to be with God. We've provided a 3 page Soul Care Audit that will offer you a handful of questions to consider how well you're caring for your soul. You can download the PDF here and spend some time prayerfully reflecting on your current rhythms and practices. Ash Patel interviews Paul Frank, a rare combination of longtime developer, broker, and mentor, about what it really takes to survive and succeed in commercial real estate over multiple decades. Paul shares how being thrown into large QSR development projects in the 1980s shaped his risk discipline, why entitlement and municipal processes have become significantly harder in recent years, and how siloed brokerage models limit brokers' real understanding of the full real estate lifecycle. He also breaks down common development and financing mistakes, including DSCR traps, prepayment penalties, and why many “developers” lack the operational depth to underwrite and execute deals properly. The conversation closes with lessons on relationship-driven dealmaking, mentorship, and why discipline—not deal volume or door count—is the real long-term advantage in CRE. The video "Set Apart: A Reflection on the Readings for the 2nd Week in Ordinary Time" by Deacon Dave & Layperson Lisa Show reflects on the readings for the second Sunday in ordinary time, focusing on Jesus's baptism and the call to holiness.Key takeaways from the reflection include:Sanctifying Grace (0:24-0:36): The Holy Spirit descends upon us at baptism, granting us sanctifying grace, which calls us to a life of holiness and makes us more like God.Called to be Set Apart (0:50-1:08): Similar to how Jesus is the Son of God, we are called to be set apart from the world, living in it but not being "of this world," but rather "of the supernatural world of God."Vessels of Light and Hope (1:23-1:37): In difficult times, we are reminded to be vessels of light, hope, and God's love to others.Holiness as Disposition and Obedience (1:42-2:09): Drawing from St. Thérèse of Lisieux, holiness is described as a disposition where our hearts, souls, and wills align with God, and it involves obedience to His will.Humility and Dependence on God (2:33-3:28): Holiness also means acknowledging our smallness and weakness, allowing God to carry us, as our strength comes through Christ. This calls for a great dependency on God and openness to growth in virtues.Growth in Prudence (3:37-4:38): The speaker shares a personal experience of growing in prudence, a virtue that helps us discern and act on what is good, particularly in communication like texts and emails.Strengthening Sanctifying Grace (4:42-5:00): Sanctifying grace is strengthened through prayer, acts of sacrifice, and acts of charity or love.Embracing God's Will (5:38-5:57): Being holy involves making an act of will towards what God desires, even when it means sacrificing our own desires. This practice makes it easier over time and helps us grow in virtue, allowing us to joyfully and easily do what is good.Call to Love (6:26-6:35): Ultimately, we are called to a life of holiness and love to all we encounter, striving to be like Jesus.
AMDG. Today, following this Jubilee Year of Hope, we welcome Joan Watson back to the Kolbecast. We've talked about pilgrimages in the past, but with the release of her new book Making a Pilgrimage, a Companion for Catholics, we're able to focus a bit more on approaching life as a pilgrim. We also take the opportunity to live vicariously through Joan's experiences on pilgrimages throughout the years. Holy Mother Church gives us an entire season to prepare for the reception of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. It is easy for us to reproach ourselves that we did not spend this season preparing ourselves adequately for such a wonderful gift. However, when we look to the Blessed Virgin, we are given an exquisite model of the proper disposition we ought to take. She demonstrates the humility, openness, and abandonment to Divine Providence that we are all called to accept.
