You can also support the show by stocking up for Pride at bit.ly/lezmerch & picking up Lez-ssentials songs on Bandcamp. Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that's, “leaving on a midnight train”. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Devon Matthews, the Head of Programs for Rainbow Railroad (@rainbowrailroad), a global nonprofit that helps LGBTQ+ people get to safety worldwide. We talk with Devon about how Rainbow Railroad got started (spoiler alert: it took a LOT of gay audacity), what types of requests for help they receive, and how they organize with other nonprofit organizations and even government leaders to make the seemingly impossible, possible. We also discuss the challenges for Devon and the rest of the Rainbow Railroad's staff of tireless advocates in providing trauma-informed care as people who mostly come from trauma-backgrounds themselves. Content warning for discussions of trauma related to queer and trans identity, situations involving domestic and state-sponsored violence, and the distressing realities of forced displacement. Through the support of partner organizations on the ground in countries all across the globe, Rainbow Railroad has the extraordinary task of connecting queer and trans people who are in great need with critical resources and a pathway to safety. When a request for help comes in, the case managers work to meet individuals where they are and devise a plan specific to their unique circumstances. The realities of assisting a queer youth who is trying to escape from domestic violence at home in a country where being gay is all-out illegal to assisting a trans adult in Europe get to safety are vastly different and require different approaches. Devon explains that the more visible the organization becomes, the more requests from LGBTQ+ people in serious crises come in– a sad fact of Rainbow Railroad's growth is that it is needed at all (and at an almost unimaginable scale!). With over 120 million displaced people worldwide, there is an immense need for Rainbow Railroad and their partner organizations. But they can't do it alone. The time is always now. There have never been a larger amount of requests for help from Rainbow Railroad than after the recent election results right here in the United States. If you are feeling fired up and ready to join the fight, consider donating to Rainbow Railroad, signing up to volunteer, or reaching out via email with ways that your access can help. There is always something we can do as individuals to fight for queer liberation– Whether you have a rich aunt ready to donate on your behalf, a property (or literally just a bedroom) you'd like to offer up as a “safe-house”, or are really good at community-building on the ground– YOU can make a difference. Remember, you can give us your own answers to our Q & Gay on Instagram and follow along on Facebook, TikTok, and BlueSky @lezhangoutpod. Requests for asylum in Canada from 2SLGBTQIA+ refugees are popping up from every corner of the globe, driven by hostile environments and laws targeting the community. The Canadian government has partnered with civil society organizations to welcome those facing persecution in their own countries, but are we and other states doing enough to protect this vulnerable minority? For insight, we welcome: Aleks Selim Dughman Manzur (they/them), co-executive director at Rainbow Refugee Society; Adrienne Smith (she/her), principal lawyer at Smith Immigration Law; Bali Ali (they/them), queer human rights defender; Devon Matthews (she/they), head of programs at Rainbow Railroad.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How would you feel if you had the ability to express your deepest emotions in a safe and supportive space? Is it possible that the secret to growth and self-realization is hidden in our vulnerability? Award-winning actor and activist, Yuval David, joins us on the show today to explore these questions and more. We kick off our conversation delving into the powerful realm of storytelling, and how it shapes our perception of ourselves and others. Yuval shares his insights on the transformative power of stories, how they've influenced his work in film, television, theatre, and the digital space, and his ongoing advocacy for civil rights, social justice, and representation. Ever stopped to truly appreciate the 'now', the present moment you're in? The Hebrew concept of "Hineni", meaning 'I am', serves as our guide as we embark on a journey to discover mindfulness. Yuval delves into this concept, emphasizing the importance of gratitude, not for our successes, but for the mere fact of our existence. We then navigate the often-underestimated importance of expressing our emotions, in particular, through crying, and how establishing a secure space for these expressions can be therapeutic, bringing about a sense of equilibrium and peace. To wrap it up, we delve into the world of the LGBTQIA+ community, examining the power of vulnerability and the critical aspect of setting boundaries. Yuval and I bring to light the importance of standing up as an ally and using our voices for tangible positive influence. We then explore Yuval's groundbreaking art project, Wonderfully Made, which portrays Jesus as a member or ally of the LGBTQ community. So tune in, and join us on this enlightening journey through storytelling, mindfulness, and advocacy in the realm of LGBTQIA+.About our Guest:Yuval DavidEmmy Award winning actor, host, filmmaker, and advocate with a creative mantra to entertain, uplift, and inspire. [Recording date: September 15, 2022] The Eager Beaver Pod asks its guests if they're willing to provide an extended interview, so that we may better get to know them/what makes them tick. When they agree, we package it together and present it to you as part of this series. This week's guest, is noted human rights activist Murray Billett. Join us for a fascinating chat about the evolution of 2SLGBTQ+ rights over the decades, policing, mental health, and the story of the Delwin Vriend court case which enshrined into law an end to legal discrimination on the basis sexual orientation in Canada, as we approach its 25th anniversary, from the perspective of someone who was involved in the 7-year-long struggle. This is episode 24 of the TNEB Interview Project. ________________ Not everyone can do everything. But everyone can do something. Because we believe that Democracy Is Something You Do... Equality for 2SLGBTQ+ people has not come at an equally rapid pace for everyone around the world, so if you wish to act globally as well as locally, please consider making a donation to the Rainbow Railroad, a Canadian organization that helps bring persecuted members of the global Rainbow Commumity to safety, here in Canada. ________________ Of course, retweets, shares, gentle corrections, constructive criticism, compliments, tips, requests, bribes to be on the show, and positive reviews (if you think we deserve some stars, please rate us) are always welcome. [Recording Date: September 6, 2022] It's back to school and being the keeners that we are, we showed up early to get a seat in the front row. Our latest Bites has a bit of international sabor we take a trip around the world on Air Beaver -- with our good friend Percival guiding the tour -- to check in on major political developments in the United Kingdom, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Chile and Argentina, among others. We talk a bit more about the verbal attack on Deputy Prime Minister of Canada and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and the general scope of toxic behaviour, the federal Liberals' micro-shuffle, that Roamin' Trailer Lady's sudden seemingly too-good-to-be-true (it is) legion of international bad boy fans, and some totally sketch behaviour with leadership ballots (CPC one's, of course). And The Eager Beaver announces that he's getting himself a slice of that 'call yourself a queen, get yourself some green' action, by ascending to his rightful seat on the throne as the actual 'queen'' of Canada. P.S. Send money. We're back, and sillier than ever. A bit more scripted this week as we want to be facts first and get them right, but no less your favourite frolicking furries. This episode is also available as a podcast at [https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/beaver-bites-back-to-school-special/id1564803781?i=1000578750108]. Because we believe that Democracy Is Something You Do... Please think of a donation to the Rainbow Railroad, a Canadian charitable organization created to rescue LGBTQ people who are in imminent danger from anti-gay terror. Or how about picking up Mayor of Peterborough Diane Therrien's infamous quote on a t-shirt at [https://deanblundell.square.site/] and help raise funds for PARN, a community AIDS Resource network that provides support and health promotion for people living with, affected by, or at-risk for HIV in Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland, and Haliburton, Ontario Or become a "Friend of Rosie", and join us in our effort to provide a basic income to a very industrious woman in Kenya who is caring for two children and two ailing parents. ________________ Of course, retweets, shares, gentle corrections, constructive criticism, compliments, tips, requests, bribes to be on the show, and positive reviews (if you think we deserve some stars, please rate us) are always welcome. SCARED TO DEATH IS EXPLICIT IN EVERY WAY. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHILE LISTENING. Episode Notes: Dan will have his usual two stories this week The first story follows a young man who decides to take a trip on LSD and ultimately, it costs his friend his life. But not how you think. The second story is set in Wisconsin - the ghosts of Jay Road. A couple of possible deaths where the killers were never held responsible for their crimes seems to have led to some intense paranormal energy that still lingers in the area powerfully to this day. Lynze has a tale about a hat man who is not the usual kind of hat man. Perhaps he morphed into something else to wreak havoc on this young boy. Then, a teenage boy gives into his girlfriend and agrees to play with a spirit board. When that goes sideways, he regrets it. New Merch: Awesome new "Gravedigger" Tee and Wall Art now in the bad magic store this week. A creepy skeleton in a disturbed shallow grave, a really cool and interesting, realistic graphic tee. Also available in JUMBO 30x40" framed canvas. In 1972, the 45 passengers and crew of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 faced extreme weather, avalanches, a variety of injuries, sickness, sun blindness, thirst, and starvation so severe, they were forced to eat the bodies of their friends and family who lay in the snow next to them for over two months in this harrowing tale of survival. Their story is so unbelievable, the first police officers that two members of this group finally contacted took hours of convincing to believe it. No one should have survived a plane crashing at an altitude of over 11,000 feet in the Andes, even in the Spring. The plane crashed far up above the tree line in a snow covered landscape, with no plants or animals for anyone to eat. The plane - because the intended flight was only two hours long - had almost no food on board. It was cannibalism or die. Even with cannibalism, the sixteen men who would make it alive still should have died. Find out why their story is often referred to as the Miracle of the Andes, today on Timesuck. Episode NotesSCARED TO DEATH IS EXPLICIT IN EVERY WAY. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHILE LISTENING. Episode Notes: Dan has his normal two tales. First we head to London to familiarize ourselves with the story of the Battersea Poltergeist. This case of one family's reports of ongoing paranormal activity got a lot of press back in the late 1950s. Recently, it's garnered interest again! Next, we'll head to Sao Paulo's, Dream Beach. A mix of horror lore and a modern encounter tale that is very creepy and entertaining. Lynze shares the bizarre, sad and spooky tale of a nun who becomes pregnant and is forced to give up her baby, despite not wanting to. St. Ann's Retreat proves to be anything but a retreat. Then for her second tale, picking up where Dan left off on a previous story, Lynze also shares a tale of an awful curse!New Merch: This week is an Annabelle exclusive merch drop! In October of 2002, the DC Snipers terrorized residents of Washington DC, Virginia, and Maryland for three weeks. During that time, people lived in constant fear that they'd be killed - shot down - while in the midst of doing normally safe and benign daily activities like pumping gas, waiting for the bus, or even just walking across a parking lot to do some shopping. In total, ten people would be murdered, three people were critically injured, and others would be randomly shot at. Hundreds of FBI agents and local police officers would work this case before it was over. They were desperate to catch the man who was dubbed the DC Sniper or Beltway Sniper by the media. Except it wasn't one man. Investigators were looking for a lone, white, male gunman. They had no idea how wrong their profile was. When it was all over, 41-year-old John Muhammad and 17-year-old Lee Boyd Malvo - both black - would be arrested. And now the authorities had to unravel the strange father-son relationship between the two, and uncover their motive for their shootings. And that is a lot of what we look into today. Their relationship, more akin to cult leader and cult follower than it was to the normal killing duo dynamic. Hope you find this story as interesting as I do! SCARED TO DEATH IS EXPLICIT IN EVERY WAY. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHILE LISTENING.Episode Notes: The first story this week is from some dark, strange corner of the web , an undocumented claim of paranormal horror at a setting we've never explored before. An escape room. It plays out like a sequence from a horror film we'd like to watch. And the second tale is a another creepy little lingerer, much like last week's curse tale. This week, Dan will share the tale of a mysterious disappearance and then reappearance. The details shared by the person who reappeared almost make you wish they would've stayed disappeared so we wouldn't have to hear what they say happened to them. Lynze has two great stories to tell. The first one is both creepy and confirming. A young child with a more than an active imagination shares some premonitions with her family. Then in her final tale, she explores the mistake a father makes when he tries to contact his deceased mother, using an ouija board. LSD is a powerful, mind-bending drug. Only a crazy person would try and tell a coherent and compelling two-hour-plus historical narrative while frying their brain on the equivalent of four hits of acid. And well... I am that crazy person. Today, to celebrate the 300th episode of Timesuck, I try and pull this story off immediately after dropping two double-hits of LSD. And things get.... weird. Also, what an amazing story! Bass Reeves' name and story are finally getting more exposure and it's about damn time! There's a good reason some people think Bass is the real-life inspiration for the Lone Ranger. This guy was a borderline superhero. Quick on the draw, fearless, and possession a relentless sense of justice, if you were and outlaw and Bass had ahold of your warrant.... you were as good as caught. Or as good as dead. The man was like a Wild West Boba Fett. He was the best at one of the hardest jobs in the Wild West - a Deputy Marshal tracking down wanted men - and the occasional wanted woman - in Indian Territory, an especially lawless land that sat where present day Oklahoma now stands. Adventure awaits in today's yip, yip, yaw episode of Timesuck. Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation: The Bad Magic Charity for June is The Rainbow Railroad. We're donating a TBD amount. TRIGGER WARNING: This case includes graphic details and rape. Mary Vincent was a 15 year old girl who had ran away from problems she faced at home. In 1978, hitchhiking was common and in order for Mary to get from Nevada to her grandfather's home in California- that's what she chose to do. However, unbeknownst to Mary, the wrong roadside passerby had different plans. What followed was that of pure evil, terror, and also of superhuman strength. Tune in this week to listen to Mary's story. SCARED TO DEATH IS EXPLICIT IN EVERY WAY. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHILE LISTENING. Special Announcement:We here at Bad Magic Productions would like to take a moment to express our sincerest sympathies to all of those whose lives are forever changed by the senseless shootings in Buffalo, Uvalde and Tulsa. Our hearts are with you. Episode Notes:Dan has one giant story, and one little baby story. The first is an alien abduction claim, the second the claim of a curse. They both got a fair amount of press and you can find info on them from numerous sources. The first story is the basis of the 1993 sci-fi mystery film, Fire in the Sky. Was Travis Walton really abducted by and experimented on by aliens? His story went on to be one of the most heavily documented alien abduction claim in US history. The second story involves claims of a curse. Did an actual witch curse a 35 year-old man in 1991? And did he die as a direct result? It sounds crazy - but the documented details of his haunting story are incredibly disturbing. Was Christopher literally scared to death? Lynze has just one, big, fat story this week. She explores the possibility of a young man being caught up in something bizarre and disturbing. Could it be mental illness? Could it be far more sinister? New Merch: New “Nightmare Man” tee and coffee mug in the store at badmagicmerch.com. It's disturbing. We wouldn't want to see this face in the mirror. Brace yourself for this one. If you can't handle graphic depictions of sexual abuse directed in the most obscene and ridiculous ways towards breasts, this isn't gonna be one you're gonna enjoy. This story truly plays out like a horror film. Some type of Rob Zombie slasher flick. On acid. Robin Gecht is a man with a VERY specific sexual obsession. And that obsession, when he wasnt behind bars, combined with Satanic worship straight out of some 1980s Satanic Panic PSA, led Robin to embark on a spree of sexual violence and murder that left at least eighteen women dead. And helping him were Ed Spreitzer and brothers, Tommy and Andrew Kokoraleis. These four men, dubbed The Ripper Crew, had a murder van, a hidden Satanic chapel, and a lot of really dark desires they took out on a lot of unsuspecting women in and around Chicago in 1981 and 1982. The truth is stranger than fiction sometimes, and this is one of those times. Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation: The Bad Magic Charity for June is The Rainbow Railroad. Hello all you ed-heads and Timbos. We are here this week to wrap up our celebration of queer voices in the horror community. Some members of the queer horror community were not comfortable calling in, and appearing on the show, so they sent in letters/messages that they wanted shared. So you get to hear me stumble through them as best as I can. Sorry ahead of time everyone, I'm doing my best. I want to thank everyone who donated to the Rainbow Railroad under the Bloodybits banner. The podcast patreon contributions once processed at the end of the month will be $200. It's no where near what is needed, so if you can help, please do. https://www.rainbowrailroad.org/donate
Hello all you Ed-Heads, and Timbos. Welcome to week 4 of our celibration of Pride month. Like I told you all before, Please go donate to The Rainbow Railroad. This week we are joined by new friend of the show, and Twitch Streamer Potato. As we discuss the 1985 cult hit Return of the living dead. If you ever held your arms out like a Frankenstein, and moaned "Brains...." unknowingly it was because of this film. If you ever talked about getting off on death, stripped butt naked in a cemetery, and danced to "Tonight (We'll Make Love Until We Die)" by SSQ, then you should listen Because Linnea Quigley was dancing to the beat of a different drummer on set. Listen in to find out who is a secret Nazi, What 9/10 eye charts say, and what wild shit Tim Yobo will think up next. Check out Sentient Potato's twitch stream! Hit up our patreon https://www.patreon.com/bloodybits Our store https://shop.bloodybits.com and if you can't I understand. Leave us a 5 star review on the iTunes..
https://www.rainbowrailroad.org/take-action#donate Hell-O all you Ed-Heads.... or should I say Fred-Heads! (And Timbos) Welcome to our first week of Pride month. A month celebrating LGBTQIA+ voices in the horror community, and representation for better or worse in horror. We are kicking things off with a literal BANG from a pop gun as we are joined by none other than long time friend of the show Bobby Trippett from the Grindbin podcast. And you know we are talking A Nightmare on Elm Street 2. The thirstiest of thirst in the series. The dancing, the bar, the weird ass dogs with human faces for no reason. we have it all. The only link I will be posting this month is to The Rainbow Railroad. Rainbow Railroad is global not-for-profit organization that helps LGTBQIA+ people facing persecution based on their sexual orientation, gender identity and sex characteristics. They have helped over 1,600 LGBTQIA+ individuals find safety through emergency relocation and other forms of assistance. 100% of our patreon funds this month will be donated to them, and if you want to contribute, please do at https://www.rainbowrailroad.org/take-action#donate
