Episode 281: Beyond Carnism with Dr. Melanie Joy Today's conversation is about an aspect of relational literacy confronting us every day: a relational paradox that begs an answer to these two questions. “What enables caring people to participate in, or otherwise support, practices that harm others, be they human or nonhuman beings? And what, then, could help shift this psychological orientation?” Questions Dr. Melanie Joy found answers to by researching the psychosociology of eating animals, a phenomenon she named carnism. What Dr. Joy concluded is this. “Eating (certain) animals results from extensive social and psychological conditioning that causes naturally empathic and rational people to distort their perceptions and block their empathy so that they act against their values of compassion and justice without fully realizing what they're doing. In other words, carnism teaches us to violate the Golden Rule without knowing or caring that we're doing so.” By deconstructing the carnistic system, she learned how violent or oppressive ideologies are structured. (Powerarchy, 2019) When Melanie was twenty-three years old, she ate a contaminated hamburger (campylobacter) and became severely sick, needing hospitalization. Surviving this incident—and questioning other aspects of how she and most of the rest of us were raised—took her on a journey from meat-eater, vegetarian to vegan and activist, theorist, author, social entrepreneur, and the eighth recipient of the Ahimsa Award for her work on global nonviolence. The Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela received this same award.  Today, our purpose is not to transform you into eating a plant-based diet. However, the evidence is compelling if you do not want to die from heart disease, lung disease, digestive cancers, infections, diabetes, high blood pressure, liver disease, blood cancers, kidney disease, breast cancer, suicidal depression, prostate cancer, Parkinson's disease, or Iatrogenic causes (dying from Doctors who know how to treat acute diseases, broken bones, and chronic infectious diseases but, do not know how to prevent disease)¹. So instead, we are here to create an awareness of Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows. Dr. Joy's book was first published in 2010, and a tenth-anniversary edition was released in 2020. We discuss the global plant-based movement 10 years later and her work in over 50 countries. You can get beyond carnism by bridging the gap between our professed values and those values we practice and by understanding the many ways carnism conditions us to be nonrelational. We discuss: The tenants of carnism and how these tenants are woven into our systems. Being trained to psychologically distance from our empathy. Classifying animals as edible and nonedible. How the dominant culture oppresses and what it teaches us about moral superiority. What does eating meat have to do with nonrelational relating? Do we think eating meat is normal or abnormal? Becoming an Ally and being as vegan as possible. An affirmative conversation you can lean into to get beyond carnism. Check it out on Itunes | StitcherIn this all new episode of Get to the Contest Small Business Podcast, we have Melanie Raimundo. She is a relationship coach and generously gives us a bit of her knowledge on how to build better relationships and, therefore, better business.1. Knowing yourselfUnderstanding yourself is critical to relationships. Know your triggers & know what makes you tick. Understanding yourself and how you like to communicate will give clarity that will allow help you to better build your relationships with others. If you don’t understand yourself, then how can others be expected to. 2. Relationships and culture is important in Business. Dysfunctional relationships and poor culture in business will have a cost. Poor team relationships can lead to sub-par performance, team turnover, retraining costs and missed sales opportunities. When relationships are good, the impact will be felt not only in the progress of the business but most importantly, it will be felt by your customers. Customers can sense when a culture isn’t quite right and will be less inclined to deal with you. I highly recommend the book Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion and Purpose by Tony Hsieh which takes a deep dive into why this is so important.3. Write down your version of success and the KPIs of your successAnswer this question: What is your version of success? This doesn’t always mean money or financial growth—success varies for different people. Success could mean being able to go home for dinner every night or being able to walk your kids to school every day. Once you are aware of your definition of success, make sure to document it so that you can work out a plan to make sure it’s successful. Getting clear on what success looks like & documenting this is the key. You can then measure your success and adjust you’re your business accordingly.4. It all comes down to leadershipAs a leader, you will have a team looking for you to set standards. If you can help your team to achieve their version of success, then it is likely that your business will reap the benefits that come from having motivated, appreciated team members. Welcome book lovers back to our first episode of Season 3. I was away on vacation so Carrie teamed up with former guest and Ohio friend Giselle Spurgeon, to co-host this week to interview a fellow Ohioan Melanie Moore, owner of the Cincy Book Bus. When you see an old rusty truck, the first thing that pops into your head is probably not “book store”. Melanie though had other ideas. Her dream of opening her own bookstore after retiring from 25 years of teaching was hampered somewhat by the heavy burden of all the things that go along with having a brick and mortar shop. That is, until she read a book written in 1917 called Parnassus On Wheels about a horse-drawn wagon filled with books driven around the countryside of England by a woman looking for adventure. When Melanie looked out her kitchen window and saw her husband's old mint green VW truck, she knew the path her bookstore future would take would have fenders and chrome. Pre-Covid, book lovers could find Melanie and her Cincy Book Bus popping up all over the greater Cincinnati area including Northern Kentucky at coffee shops, festivals, and small boutiques. Now with pandemic, she has made her presence count online as she has all kinds of ways customers can buy books, many of them hard to find European editions, both with her online store as well as with a bookclub. Oh, and I can't forget to mention that 100% of her proceeds go to buying books for low-income youth. Melanie talks to Carrie and Giselle about why she sees her bookstore on wheels as part of a much larger book community, how her love of the 1930s and 40s fueled the vintage feel of her logo and truck, and how she doubled the number of books she donates to worthwhile children's organizations. Books Discussed in This Episode: 1 - Parnassus on Wheels by Christopher Morley 2- All Creatures Great and Small series by James Herriott 3- Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan 4- The Invincible Summer of Juniper Jones by Daven McQueen 5- Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson 6- The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin 7- Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier 8- Books by D.E. On this week's episode of Barksins, season 1 episode 7, LJ states that we are all selfish, doing things to serve our own purpose. As the rest of the episode unwinds, we see Layton building up the rebellion by going to speed to Miss Audrey in third class. Miles has been promoted to engineer, and Bennett goes to grab him from his class. Miles is given an orange as a gift, and this causes him to throw up. In the sick bay, Dr. Peyton helps Josie talk to Miles, and Josie lets Miles know that the revolution is still happening. Melanie pays Zara a visit, and tells Zara that she knows she's pregnant. After threatening her baby, Zara ends up ratting out Josie. Melanie takes Josie to holding... where she ends up interrogating her and freezing one of her fingers before taking a hammer to it. Though Til tries to help, Josie recognizes there is only so much that can be done. When Melanie returns, Josie has frozen off her entire hand (with presumably the help of Til), and Melanie and Josie face off in a fight. Unfortunately for Josie, Melanie ends up getting the upper hand and locks her in the interrogation room-- where the freeze is spraying in and ends up most likely killing Josie. At the end of the episode, Melanie shows Miles to the engineer room-- and she answers the question posed in the beginning of the episode (about people being selfish) by stating that she does things for the good of the train, and not for her own happiness. “Mistakes are going to happen along the way. That's where you learn the most and where you have the most growth in your business. Mistakes are learning opportunities.” Melanie (35:11-35:25) Time and focus are two of the main areas I help women with as a coach. Many women want to learn how to take control of their time and have the focus to create a life that aligns with their core values.  When Melanie came to me looking for guidance on making her own life transition, she was juggling seven jobs and struggling to have the time with her family that she wanted. Melanie's story shows how it's possible to build a bridge to entrepreneurship without the hustle or the grind and create real growth in all areas of her life, including her relationships and career.  “Building a bridge comes down to having the right resources and understanding the path so that you put down the planks and not have to take a leap.” - Blake Schofield (32:05-32:24) The journey towards a new career or business is different for every person.  Melanie had quit her 19-year nursing career. But she still had to support her family, forcing her to take on multiple jobs only to end up stressed and burned out. So she got to a point where starting a business seemed like the right solution for her. That's when she came to me for help. But like so many other women, Melanie wasn't sure how to create a business or what it would even look like. Many people make the mistake of thinking they can figure it out on their own. But they end up getting stuck and never actually get started.  The work we did together started with discovering her passions and figuring out how she could maximize her talents. We had to prioritize so that she wouldn't get overwhelmed with too much to do. We worked on allocating her time appropriately so she could get more done in less time. Melanie wanted flexibility and control. She wanted her schedule to be on her terms so she could take time off to care for her kids when they needed her. She knew she was missing out on a lot, and she just wasn't willing to compromise anymore.  What differentiates the work I do is that I help clients take a holistic view. Before we can make any real change in our careers, we have to change parts of ourselves. We have to look at the mental and emotional impacts that our current situation is having on us. Only then can we start to transform who we are and how we experience life. Too many women convince themselves that they don't have time to make a career change or build a business. They don't understand that it really is possible for them.  “You don't have to settle on jobs that you don't like. There are so many opportunities available if you want them. You just have to look for them and know they're out there.” - Melanie  (22:15-22:27) Melanie's coaching journey helped her learn the value of her time. She learned the importance of establishing boundaries and priorities. Melanie can now manage her work so that she has the capacity and energy for all the things in her life. She identified who the right people are that she can help, knowing that she's heading in the right direction. More importantly, she learned that it's okay to not have all the answers because she knows where she can always find them.  Coaching helped Melanie recognize the importance of developing a strong psychological and emotional foundation when building a business. This lets her adapt to different situations and be more confident when facing uncertainty.  The only way to fail is to quit. When you have passion behind your work and you have the resources you need, you know you don't have to have all the answers. That's when you know that nothing's going to stop you. Success is only a matter of time. That's part of the journey and the process.  How to Get Involved If you would like some help to get clarity & a roadmap for your path ahead, schedule a free strategy call today.  You can also visit my website for more information and valuable resources. You are capable of far more than you can imagine. Life doesn't have to be an  either/or. You can have it all and do it without taking a leap or risking what you've worked so hard to build!

How to Use Data to Win Leadership Support and Get Promoted

Rock Your Trade Show

Sometimes it can be hard to know how to go past cost per lead to demonstrate value you’re your face-to-face marketing program.  If you struggle with showing leadership value for your program-this episode will help you focus on key metrics and help you become a trade show shero or hero! In a recent interview with Melanie Neal, she said something that has stuck with me.  When Melanie receives a request for a new initiative she will ask the requester “What does the data tell us?”.  Melanie, who is a Vice President at a large healthcare is on to something, and so often we shy away from data and rely on other factors like competitive advantages or FOMO (fear of missing out) which in face-to-face marketing is more like fear of what competitors and clients will think. So how can we embrace data and start using it to our advantage? Here is a story to show why data is so important.  Our results division provides analysis and ROI modeling for trade shows.  In a recent project, Lynn Reves, our Marketing and Results Division Director shared that we are able to justify the spend for large trade show exhibit using ROI modeling that proves out the spend is paid for before leads are generated.  Sound good? Imagine, if you could go to leadership and say “we need to be at this show-here is the data to show why, and by the way we have metrics that demonstrate how this show pays for itself”!  It is easy to overlook, or under-value key metrics that help deliver this message.  Here are five things to consider for your program and how data evaluation will help you move the ROI justification needle.  5 Ways to Demonstrate Value with Data Define show goals and objectives to go beyond cost per lead. What does your company need to do to achieve sales results?  If you have a long sales cycle-it easy to rely on that timeline as a reason why it is hard to show ROI.  But don’t fall into that trap!  There are ways to move your sales and marketing initiatives forward even if it is a 6-18 month selling cycle. Establish milestones that demonstrate your face-to-face program helped sway the customer to “Yes”. Close the loop on post show follow up. Even if your company has the best CRM system in the world, if leads aren’t followed up on-and no action is taken, the value of the long-term solution for that customer is diminished to a faded memory.  This is one of the biggest challenges for trade show marketers and also one of the keys to success.  Align Sales and Marketing so that there is a common objective. Our free program assessment shows time and again that when sales and marketing making adjustments can be the key difference in achieving targeted goals.  When marketing and sales take the survey they can see visually on the results what they can do to improve together instead of in a silo. Focus on four key areas of measurement at your next show: new business, customer retention, value of promotion and communications, and cost avoidance. Each area has strategies that require actions to be made onsite exhibit staff. The first one-new business is obvious and the reason most companies attend a trade show.  Customer retention is often overlooked and it can lead to missed opportunities to grow the business you already have.  Add a value to your promotion (this can be sponsorship and advertising outreach for a show) and it will help bolster the data to show the exposure you are winning by attending.  Lastly-the cost avoidance is the one area that when truly implemented can in some cases pay for the entire conference.  If for example, you have a global company and senior leaders will be at the show-creating internal meetings instead of traveling separately to meet at a different time can really add up and the efficiency adds to the overall bottom line for the company. Go Beyond Cost Per lead. Measure these areas to really show results: Executive Participation Thought Leadership Press and PR impact Business development and competitive surveillance Return on Objectives Tech/Product Showcase Cost-cost index to measure cost savings Return on Investment-payback ratio   The last one on this list is the most valuable as it gives you the data you need to really measure the overall effectiveness of your program.    Now that you have gathered the data you need a strategy to share this information you are ready to share it with your boss and leadership.  Hopefully as you embarked on the data journey you discovered what is the most important measurement for your company.  For some organizations, it could be as simple of staying ahead of the competition.   Other companies have deeper strategic goals like increasing market share or increasing the sales prospect by expanding cross selling between products.  Whatever they are-they should be the cornerstone of your messaging. In preparation for your presentation to leadership, keep it simple.  Don’t rely a huge slide deck-but rather have one page that summarizes your findings.  Often your time with leadership is very short and the more concise you are, the increased chances of achieving your results.  Remember these three tips-prepare, share and end with a call to action.  Just like your sales reps on the show floor, ask for what it is you need to help you continue to be successful.  One of my guests, Christine DiDomenico shared that when she met with leadership she had three columns, must do, nice to do and out of the box initiatives.  If you prepare your call to action with this in mind it will help shape the conversation and you will achieve your results. How valued do you feel your trade show program is within your organization?  Do you feel like there is a disconnect between sales, marketing and leadership?  Check out our free online assessment and discover gaps and how you can align all stakeholders together. I hope you have found this information helpful, if I can be of any help to you as you demonstrate and validate your program, reach out to me at rockyourtradeshow.com/lets talk I love hearing from you! In episode fourteen of Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Watts sits down with Melanie Gleeson, the founder and CEO of Endota Spa.When Melanie opened the first Endota Spa in 2000, spas did not exist- in fact there were so few day spas in Australia that upon applying for a business permit, the local government thought Melanie was applying to open a brothel. Today, however, it is safe to say the holistic wellness movement has well and truly made it to the mainstream. Having been instilled with the ethos that we should respect ourselves, others, and the environment from an early age, Melanie has sat at the helm of Endota as it expanded 102 spas nationally and seen it become the largest spa network in Australia. Internet Marketing and Entrepreneurship with Miles

Getting visitors to click on your affiliate links is tricky... But the best super affiliates know this #1 trick to getting clicks when they present their offers in this way. First of all, have you seen the full 'How To Make Money With Affiliate Marketing' course? It is a free live class I held here on YouTube that you can watch here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tD97-K5TeE That free affiliate marketing course will teach you the bigger picture behind what makes for a successful affiliate marketing business. This video goes deeper into the dirt looking at the specific tactics of how to present an affiliate link. There are only five ways that you can present affiliate links… Through a paid advertisement, through a social media post, through a piece of content like a presell page, review, advertorial or blog post, through a bridge page or in an email. You can mix and match these if you'd like… For example, if you give a free item away in exchange for the opt-in, you can present the affiliate offer in the bridge page and then you can also present offers via email. If the concept of an affiliate marketing funnel is new to you, or you need help setting up your own affiliate marketing funnel… Watch these two videos, below: What is an affiliate marketing funnel: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QV-lq5Popvo How to create an affiliate marketing funnel in under 30 minutes: www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IsMN8igQdU In that second video I physically show you, step-by-step, how to set up an affiliate marketing funnel including creating a bridge page video! Another example how you can mix and match these five techniques for presenting affiliate marketing offers… You can promote an advertorial from a social media post… If you have a Facebook retargeting pixel on that page, when they leave you can present a Facebook ad that links them to your opt in page in your affiliate funnel, ultimately driving them back to the bridge page and then on your list for your email offers. I share this longer series of interactions with a visitor to get them to the affiliate product because I want you to understand that successful affiliate marketers maximize the number of opportunities they have to present affiliate offers to their audience! This is why I'm so big on growing an email list and email marketing! With an email list of interested subscribers, you can give value and present affiliate offers for years to come… And it eliminates the need for you to "make a sale" today because you know that if you offer enough value and continue to promote unique and helpful products… Eventually you will make plenty of sales! for all of my courses and tutorials on email marketing, watch this playlist here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxaX0bsbvho&list=PL0sOKzn__yK0VnVMgrmpZKAqAAAp0ynBm Then, you learn about the number one trick to actually getting people to take action on your affiliate links when you present them. The trick here is storytelling! There is an old saying in sales: "Facts tell, stories sell!" When Melanie and I invested in learning how to tell stories the way that Hollywood professionals do… Our business exploded! Our messages were received better, people could envision themselves getting the desired result they want, and ultimately more people started taking action because we told better stories. We also learned the secret behind the Hollywood story framework... Just about every Hollywood blockbuster ever made has followed this same exact framework and if you'd like to learn it from the best in the industries, check out this course: www.youtube.com/redirect?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.milesbeckler.com%2Fstory&redir_token=Q3QyJ4yQutu51fZbjZ62ZJxSMl58MTUzMDk0Mzk0NEAxNTMwODU3NTQ0&v=kCHC49i0W9s&event=video_description Once you know the framework to storytelling, you must practice the art of telling stories… But, you already understand you need to be making daily content anyways. So this allows you to just begin mixing in stories to the content you're already creating! Do a 90 day challenge and get as many stories out as you can, and you will be a pro level storyteller in no time! This really is the big trick to affiliate marketing success.
